  • I had the opportunity to take apart a Corvette C5 Z06 transmission (the T56 transmission). I thought people would like to see what it looks like, how the gears work and how the synchros (gear selection) works.

    One of the best demonstrations of a manual transmission I've seen. Thanks.

    As an engineering who knows nothing about cars this video was excellent as it actually shows a real world gear box. Assisted me greatly with assignment

    The shaft that you are calling "gear for your shifting", is called the counter shaft assembly. I once tore that front gear on the counter and the gear of the input shaft, from a 1970 442, W-30. Great explanation, thanks for the video.

    excellent explanation! I thought I knew how it all worked, since I rebuilt two T56s. I never made the connection, that there really isn't a 4th gear..lol! I always called 4th the input shaft, were I guess the best description of it would be 4th dogs, and input shaft!
    Your dogs look a lot better the mine did! I sharped some of mine up, seems to work ok, everyone and a while they are notchy. And reverse is always notchy, but I couldn't get my angle grinder in to sharpen the teeth on reverse.
    BTW carbon fibre is the Friction material on the blocker rings.

    The only time you stop a gear is when the car is not moving and you are putting it into first or revers..
    I can shift a car with out using the clutch while I am going down the road.. You ease off on the gas pedal until it's easy to put the transmission into neutral .. Then you rev match the engine rpms to get the gears on the engine side to match the speed the gears on the drive shaft side are spinning in the next gear that you want to engage.. You have to increase engine rpms to go to a lower gear and decrease engine rpms to get the transmission engaged into a higher gear..
    How do I know this ? I have done it for over 40,000 hours in heavy class 8 trucks that don't normally have synchronized transmissions .. Many Eaton Transmissions have three shafts two of them are Counter shafts.. Thus it's called a twin countershaft transmission .. Eaton uses an air shifter to change ranges and the range shifter is synchronized.. As is the air shifter r to spit the gears between direct and overdrive on some models ..

    Doubt anybody will respond, but, my c5 makes a loud rattle like whirling marbles In a metal can sound. Goes away when I put my foot on the clutch but comes back as soon as I let my foot off. Already replaced TOB. Could it be I out shaft bearing? Clutch pedal feels perfect and no problem shifting into gears. Makes whirling sound when in any gear. Thansk

      Angel X. Santana Might be one of the drive shaft bearings...

    I was just wondering if the shift forks are brass or are they cheap plastic? Gertrag uses plastic on the tips of the shift forks. ... And I think that's just asking for trouble.

    • @vsvenson
      @vsvenson  Před 7 lety

      The tips of the forks are plastic.

  • @brunic11
    @brunic11 Před 3 lety

    So when the car is in neutral, what happens in the gear box? What is spinning and what is not? Curious because my C5 whines when in gear but stops completely when in neutral.

    • @vsvenson
      @vsvenson  Před 3 lety

      In neutral, the input shaft is spinning and all of the gear clusters are spinning on a stationary output shaft. When you shift - slide a selector ring to lock a gear to the output shaft - the output shaft (pinion) turns with that specific gear cluster.

    • @brunic11
      @brunic11 Před 3 lety

      @@vsvenson Thanks, just as I thought. So basically all the gears are always moving if the if the clutch is engaged and car is coasting. What do you think would be the cause in my case? Whine when going into and while in gear and no noise when in neutral?

  • @yinnemedina5194
    @yinnemedina5194 Před 4 lety

    My reverse and 4th gears are gone 😭😭

  • @mikeskidmore6754
    @mikeskidmore6754 Před 5 lety

    The gears are all turning all the time .. The Synchro's do not stop the gears.. They Synchronize the drive and driven gears so they are spinning at the same RPM so that the dogs can be engaged .. so that they are positively locked together .. I wish I could get a T-56 with straight cut gears it would be much stronger and more efficiently but oh no straight cuts gears are noisy ..
    Your explanations are rather bad really but I guess you know how to take a transmission apart and put it back together ..
    Gear Box Video makes by and far the best videos on Manual car transmissions I have ever seen.

      My intent was to imply they stop relative to the shaft/drive dogs they're engaging with.
