Tremec T56 - 6 spd Trans Rebuild Homemade Trans Jack & New Project

  • I'll show you what makes them difficult to shift into 1 & 2nd gear plus the tricks to repair and re-assemble them. If you need a trans jack check out the homemade setup. Also included some extra car info and what I've been up to in general! I like buying things that need some work - then when one goes thru everything you know what you have. Hope you don't mind the longer video instead of the 2 part thing. Leave a comment or ask a question! Thank you all for watching, Jeff

    Great video man, T56 is one of my all time favorite Trans to work on. Getting ready to pull mine out of my 97 Comp T/A Build #154 and rebuild it. Only 55k miles but I'm starting to get the infamous problem of it jumping out of 2nd Gear. Never accrued to me to mark for the guide pins, I've been lucky and haven't had that much trouble with them in the past. But its something I'm going to do from now on.

    Best video I've seen yet on the T56! I'm about to do what amounts to a FULL rebuild of the transmission, minus only shafts and gears, in my 2002 Z06 Corvette. It's a track car with almost 100k mi on it. The diff is giving out on it, and while the transmission feels pretty decent right now, I may as well just deal with both while I'm dropping the entire driveline! Unfortunately, I can't really service the Getrag diff without a bunch of really expensive, proprietary tools. I'm going to have to outsource that job. However, I can't wait to break open my T56 this weekend and scope it out!
    Thanks!

    I had a 99 Firebird with a 5 speed. I always wanted a T56-6 Speed for it, but alas my wife made me sell it because it did not have back doors. Grinn.... I have never owned an automatic car, and I would have loved a T56. BTW, When I sold it last year the transmission was like new. I have never blown up a manual transmission yet, and my synchros were good in all gears. I rev match all up and down shifts, and when it is cold I double clutch into 2nd gear for the first couple of minutes. Most guys just jamb it and pay the price. Many years ago (I'm dating myself) I factory ordered a 76 Pontiac Ventura with a V8 and a 5 speed. That year there were five of them ordered in my city and all got destroyed in the first year. They said those Borg Warner 5 speeds were a weak transmission. I sold mine 19 years later because it was totally rusted out, but that Borg Warner "weak transmission" was still perfect. Four years ago I bought a new 2014 Chev Cruz with a 6 speed of course. I don't know how long that little 1.8 four banger will last, but I expect the 6 speed will last the life of the car, because nobody, but nobody drives my manual transmission car. Shifting a stick today is a lost art.

    Really excellent video Jeff. You have a great way of explaining everything with the correct terms, and lots of skill obviously. Neat tricks too.
    I've got a C5 ZO-6 and it shifts very well, but in a week I'll be test driving an '07 CTS-V and the owner has made some mention of the trans being sticky into first. Car only has 30k on it - any advice as to how to determine if the Tremec in that V is in trouble? I know how to check for clutch drag, but I don't want to buy a problem!
    Thanks for posting the video!

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  Před 7 lety

      Up shifting the trans still worked pretty good. When coming to a stop getting into first gear was the big problem. When coming up on a 4 way stop and its your turn to go and your not able to get into first that is quite aggravating! (as you noted there was no clutch drag either) On an older 4 speed trans one could always work the clutch just right and easily get into gear no matter how tired the trans was. Anyway that would be a sign of upcoming repairs. Hope that helps ya out.

    • @briggsquantum
      @briggsquantum Před 7 lety

      I've driven the CTS-V and have purchased it. First and second are very smooth and easy to engage. It pops out of reverse gently, mostly I think because the stock shifter is so sloppy. Reminds me of the old "Cornbinder Wobblestick" of the past! I'm hoping a short shifter will make the difference on the reverse engagement - I don't think it's getting fully into gear.
      Thanks for the reply and the advice Jeff. Take care!

    In your experience on the GTO T56 Tremecs... If grinding while shifting into 2nd, can you get away with just replacing the center friction cone? Or should inner and outer also be replaced. (These do not have the kevlar/carbon pads on them like the double-sided center ring, but do they get really get worn down much?) Also would it be worth trying to just swap out my fluid to GM Synchromesh? Not sure what is in there now... Bought it in this condition.

    Hi Jeff! after watching your video I am quite excited to take my T56 apart. It has the same problem like you had in 1st and 2nd. it sometimes does it in 3rd aswell. and almost never engages into reverse anymore. I've only done about 2000 miles on it since I bought it of craigslist. I'm wondering if this failure might have been caused by running the wrong transmission fluid or perhaps the B&M short shifter. At first I had Penzoil dexron 3 ATF in it and only recently changed it to GM synchromesh after the problems started shifting. what Oil do you recomend? and what do you think might have happened to 3rd gear and reverse? Your advice will be greatly appreciated sir! Thank you.

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  Před 7 lety +1

      Don't seem right/not good where you just bought it and having problems already. First I am running the regular Dex 3. (Did do some research on that again some time ago.) Actually in the 70's I was putting that in manual transmissions and transfer cases before the manufactures were doing that. I enjoy experimental as you might gather. Things shifted great when below zero and never any related failures. I have tried the Dex 6 and gear oil in a bad working T56 to experiment to see if it helped at all. Actually think that made things a little worse. Wanted to include that cause I know someone was probably pondering doing that to save them the effort!! For the 3rd and reverse check the rings, syncro blocks, and forks over carefully after disassemble for wear and engagement teeth nose tips/ends. A little FYI - When I engage to reverse I do that while slightly moving and that seems to make it go in better than at a full stop. After all it has a syncro ring! You are probably aware of that reverse lock out. The factory setting from the computer keeps reverse gate blocked until under 2 mph. I did change my computer to 10 mph with that tuners program. I like being able to easily get into that gate in advance even tho not ready for rev yet - especially backing in a driveway on a busy road. That B&M short shifter - not familiar with that so sorry can't help. Just take your time and inspect the concern areas & assemble and you should end up being a happy camper, Jeff

    Would you happen to have a spare exciter ring for a T56 Magnum? if not do you know where I may be able to get one? I need to make one with half as many teeth for a special application on a Mazda Rx-7. Speedo reads twice the speed and I would rather modify the trans than the gauge cluster. +Craig Blanchard Hello Crag. Many years back I built a kart with a narrowed car car rear end. I did buy the rear end which was crudely shortened by a guy. (was cheap & worked good) Then I bought 2 - 3 speed transmissions from the junk yard that the shifter came directly out of the top. (don't remember what they were from) Hooked them inline together with no driveshafts only the yokes & u joints. Had 9 gears forward and 3 speeds in reverse. Then put a 10 HP Briggs in front with a duel belt clutch. The frame and steering was all homemade. With both trans-es in 1 st gear top speed was 3 mph but the power was awesome. With both in 3rd gears app 45 mph was possible. That thing was great for all around uses. I do have 8mm footage of this thing but it's pretty grainy. Still might post it some day where folks like you would probably enjoy it. If there was a way for you to link a 3 or 4 speed trans with your setup you should have a similar setup, speed & power. Hope this helps you out with some thoughts, Jeff.

    Jeff can you recommend a rebuild kit for a 97 Camaro with an LT1 with T56?

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  Před 7 lety

      Hi there! The kit I bought was kinda an overkill where the bearings probably would of been fine but I can't tie up the shop for my stuff, wanted to make sure all went good. Seems you can buy a more basic kit, syncro rings without the bearings and might want to consider several of the updated parts as shown on the video too. That rebuild kit I showed came from zbag.com/

    great video. very interesting. I know nothing about transmissions, but i have heard that skipping gears can wear out syncros. any truth to that? I myself skip gears all he time.

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  Před 8 lety

      +Tiit Saul I believe that is correct. When I do that I'll allow a bit of time before engaging the skipped gear or gears so the clutch disc has time to slow first to match the engine speed. Perhaps you caught how long I delayed the 6th engagement when the other gears were skipped - second to sixth. There is a different feel in the shifter when speeds are matched with the engine. Under those conditions the rings should last for the life of the trans one would think.

    • @tiitsaul9036
      @tiitsaul9036 Před 8 lety

      Thank you for the explanation. When I skip gears from third to fifth I still shift into fourth for a moment ( clutch still engaged). I think it helps a little bit.

    Do you think a T5 transmission would be sufficient for a 327? I have a 72 Buick Skylark and a 327/quadrajet carb with a 2.93 rear end. My goal is to shoot for 25 mpg. Some say I would need a shorter rear end like a 3.55 so as not to be revving to the moon in city driving. What would be your take on this scenario Jeff?

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  Před 6 lety

      I think that would be a good choice. They hold up great and with a lower rear gear you would have the best of all worlds. City and highway driving.

    2jeffs1 Great video ! I am having the same exact issues with gears 1 and 2 but I’m not so sure I trust my skill level to fix myself. What should I expect to pay a mechanic for this job? Thanks

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  Před 5 lety

      Hard to answer that. Depends on what they all end up replacing, etc.... I would try to find a friend who is happy with a certain place and they thought they seemed honest and offer to show you the replaced parts on pickup with a reason why they were replaced. Beware - I have seen people bid low to get you in the door and when taken apart they.... Also the cheapest bid usually ends up with a return visit for a re-do so beware.

    I have a 2004 cobra. My T56 keeps popping out of 4th gear. It does it maybe 3-4 times while I’m driving normally. But it goes right back in gear when I push the clutch in. What do u think that is? My car is pushing out 630 hp to the tire. Do I need to upgrade the gears or something? Thanks for any help u give.

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  Před 6 lety

      The detents must be crisp which assist in gear retention but I more so suspect the teeth in the 3/4 syncro block slide collar or 4th gear where the collar - slide/contact area are worn.

    Going back together with mine I get stuck in 4th. It seems the throw of the ring is too long (more than halfway past the synchro keys) and then it's too difficult to go back to center. I'm seating on my tapered bearing and in the key ways on my synchro ring... What limits the throw of the ring? Hitting the gear or the H pattern? Yours goes in and out of 4th effortlessly when putting the case on so I think something is wrong. I did have to use a puller to get the 3-4 hub off and I had to press it back on. It's flush with the snap ring so I don't get it. The distances from 3rd to center and 4th to center is pretty much the same (within .050"). I'm lost at the moment...

    • @lancealderman2755
      @lancealderman2755 Před 4 lety

      Anyone having the same problem, mine was from using a slider sleeve that wasn't tight enough on the hub causing it to be able to flop around in there (it was an aftermarket slider). I was also popping out of 3rd gear under decel. New matched hub and slider and no more problems.

    • @SHADOWBLACKs650
      @SHADOWBLACKs650 Před 7 lety

      I have a feeling these are disposable transmissions you need a press in all kinds of things to rebuild them I don't think a Tremec is like that it's a Chinese transmission I have a feeling it's disposable and not rebuildable.

    How's it going Jeff, I have two T56 transmissions. I have an F-Body LT1 T56 and a C6 ZO6 transmission, My question being what parts would be necessary to take off of the early f-body one to make the ZO6 transmission work. From what I understand I'll need the GTO mainshaft and the LS1 front plate aswell. I think the ZO6 has triple cone synchros and as far as i know I would need those for a higher revving engine since I plan on wrapping out to 8k in the future. Also what parts would be best to upgrade?

    • @downonit22
      @downonit22 Před 7 lety

      And what do you recommend for transmission fluid? I'm considering Nippon ENEOS GL-5 ECO-ATF, i am just not sure if it will cause the synchro blockers to balloon seeing that it's a synthetic ATF fluid but it complies with DEXRON III.

    Wondering what it would cost to have you do all the work you did on this car, parts and labor. Be real; be sober.
    Thumbs up.

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  Před 8 lety

      +WSmart1 Gotta admit I love this question. You are spot on for your thoughts! They call that - value of repairs exceeds value of vehicle. Many things I buy were rough or junk when they arrived here. I call it 2 ways to look at things. Ok - here's my take. Say you would want to go buy that car in good cond for 10k. After one pays the monthly bills and daily necessities to survive in general how long and how much extra money does one need to make/clear to have that 10 k to spend? And what about interest if one had a loan. Now that car you bought 5 years ago starts leaking oil and starting to need some of this maintenance that I done gets more expensive yet. I guess I look at things in a different way, right or wrong but fun trying! Some of those things I probably could of left alone for a while. I must admit that things do get over killed here. Friends say that too. I do get rough on things periodically and like when there is no worry of breakage or popping the engine. After all the work is done the dependable factor is a good thing too! Thank you for your comment. Neat how you wrote that up!

      +2jeffs1 when l do my searching on craigslist l put in needs work, and pick from that list, because most of those have gotten quotes from a shop that were more then the car is worth, but if l do the wrenching l can get double my labor rate , great vid thanks for taking the time,

    • @2jeffs1
      @2jeffs1  Před 8 lety

      +mustie1 That is very interesting and helpful. I will be using that. Thank you! On the labor rate here I rarely can charge for actual time invested do to rust/corrosion and surround areas like for an intake (and the inside of them) prep takes more time than the actual work. You only get paid for the job once so no return problems is a good thing. Keeps folks coming back!
      Give you a grin - I've never advertised and the shop is not in the phone book. Under my name only. All word of mouth and the nicest people ever to work for. I have a funny feeling that things at your place are quite similar. Thank you for helping out & glad you enjoyed the vid!
