I bought this wrecked 2019 Aston Martin Vantage and i believe it to be the cheapest one in the UK! Only thing is ive got to repair it. Buying parts direct from Aston Martin can be very expensive so im doing my best to cross reference parts from other manufactures like Volvo and Mercedes. But today i tackle to dashboard and it turns out its like no other dashboard ive ever removed.

Great job so far Mat! I used to work for Aston and the guy isn’t lying, those dashboards weigh a tonne! The crane assembly we used is the safest way to remove the dash as it will lift it evenly away from the car but also allows you to turn the dash onto its side to fit through the door way. I’m pretty certain when you order a new dash it comes complete with all the metalwork so stripping it may be a risky move, be very careful! The connectors in the knee pads are used for programming modules when the car is on the production line in case anyone was wondering! 😀

Having worked at JLR and Aston, the standard process for fitting/removing the dash is to have the doors removed. The doors are fitted later on in the process line once all of the main cabin is fitted (i.e. dash, seats centre console etc.)
I think you may find two bolts on each side that are in the door "A" pillars. I retired in 2016 so not sure on the process for your car.

Hey Matt, you're inspiring. Fantastic content. I understand your anxiety of stripping down and removing the dash. In the aviation industry we can remove an entire cockpit when it goes into a deep strip hangar check. The main difference of course is that aeroplanes are designed to be taken apart. However we do use the bagging and tagging technique. Everything that is removed is bagged in a small string-tie canvas bag and labelled with a marker. Your remark when you rebuilt the Range Rover dash made me laugh, when you commented on how many bolts you had left over. If you use the bag and tag technique, you will substantially lower that number and you won't have to rely on memory when it comes to reassembly. Good luck!

  • @10triumphs
    @10triumphs Před rokem +9

Mat, I used to work on production lines in Ford the dash is always completed and finished on a jig then slid through a door opening and bolted to the car with a lift. So you shouldn’t have to remove all the clocks etc. Usually the dash is the first part of a car build in the process then everything is added around it. Somewhere there will be around 6 main bolts holding that dash in…..

Hi Matt, as a hardened body shop fitter with some 40 years experience, these days I use my phone to photograph orders of assemblies and as someone else mentioned, put the bolts back in where they came from when you take something out, I would think Aston’s would purposely make it difficult for a DIY repair to stop meddlers, so you have to take it back to a recognised specialist, as Lamborghini did with their cars back in the day, they even removed the part numbers from outsourced parts! Logic and patience are your best friends here, don’t ever get worried about taking something apart, stay cool and do what you have to do and box clever and improvise, the quick way out isn’t necessarily the best way to tackle a job like this! Best of luck! 👍

Fix the dash in-situ sounds like a great possibility, especially if it’s done to make it removable rather than completely covered over again. Stitching the leather edges very carefully around the air bag cover and remaining leather dash.
Make a feature of it, add an AM logo in the leather but change it to MA logo 😁👍🏼 It’s your unique car to do what you want with now. It doesn’t have to be back to factory spec 100%

Mat...top tip to help you remember. screw bolts back into holes once removed and parts taken off.
Also..lay parts out on the floor on a big bit of cardboard and order them from bottom to top of what comes out first, so you know the order of how things are assembled etc and what goes on left/right side, what plugs in where etc. It will safe you a massive head ache and accident repair centres will do this.

I stumbled across you with the Ferrari rebuild and have to say you are an inspiration. So many young men and women (I will come back to this) don't have the belief in themselves to tackle even the smallest of maintenance tasks let alone try basic mechanics. My Father new nothing about mechanics but by sheer luck I was born with an engineers head so when my father needed his brake pads changing on his Austin Montego 1.6HL, I stepped up! I was 13yrs old and was working with a basic socket set and spanner set and of course the grate persuader - The Hammer. By the age of 15 I had replaced 2 clutches and the near side rear suspension for other people on their cars. At 16 I got a 50cc motorbike paid for by myself (very proud). The first thing I did was take the engine out and take it apart to see how it worked (massive learning curve). Obviously putting it back together I was able to upgrade things that would make it go faster and boy did it! Point is if you don't try these thing you will never know and in not knowing you will never be able to pass on the knowledge. So I'm going back to the bit where I said I would come back to this. A friend of my my wife and I is South African and is going back to South Africa, but she's exporting her car from the UK to SA. Part of the regulations on exporting a car is 'it must have a valid MOT that lasts longer than 6 months'. so so asked me to pre MOT it. The only things I could check were emissions and braking force per wheel, but I did say to her that it wold be beneficial to her and the car if all brake pads were replaced. She hovered over me so much that I let her do the next. She is now able to replace a spare tyre and change front and rear brake pads on her car and any car. She now has the confidence to tackle mechanics, be it basic but that is what counts, and what you are posting again is offering inspiration and knowledge to thousands of people who otherwise wouldn't know. handshake and pat on the back sent

Other manufacturers have other models to fall back on, Lamborghini for example can go to VW or Audi for basic fittings and components that don’t need to be special, Aston has no choice but to take from other automakers. I care about the core components such as the suspension, transmission and engine and then the interior, if they were sharing parts there then I would see it as cheapening the brand. For example using the same window controls from a £30,000 car in a 100k plus one isn’t good as there will be expected quality. RR is an example of this as they have used a cheap plastic stalk on the steering wheel, oddly it’s not from BMW so I fail to see why it’s used but if it were, you can see how it can cheapen the brand though part sharing.

The aluminium casting is known as the cross car beam and it acts as the central structure to the instrument panel subassembly. Usually, everything on the instrument panel attaches to that. Typically it’s fixed and located to the lower a pillar BIW on both sides. Unfortunately I don’t think you’ll have much luck at removing and replacing the instrument panel without removing the entire cross car beam subassembly. Good luck!

The Vantage will OF COURSE be significantly different BUT surely there's a simple enough method to get panels out for repair after the airbags go off! Hi Matt. The dash should be mounted to that huge aluminium casting, which will double up as the ‘cross car beam’ (adds torsional strength as well as a frame to mount the dash components to). This entire assembly is normally constructed outside of the car on a jig that can spin in multiple directions. I would suggest removing the centre console completely, then the lower trims in the footwell and glovebox, then you should get to the casting fixings.
I have family and former colleagues that were on the interior engineering design team at AML, (and I did the same job at Bentley) - happy to pass on any queries you might have 👍🏻

Came across your channel perhaps because I actually own a 2019 vantage. This has been an incredible series. Also hugely impressed by your incredible enthusiasm and ability to wing it as you go. HUGE respect - and really excited to see where this goes. Liked and subscribed for more - good luck with it!!! Challenge you to a track day once it’s hopefully all good to go? 🏎🏎

I work at Aston Martin and you’ve got a really nice spec vantage, contrast stitching, dark chrome jewellery pack, carbon trim, sports steering wheel… this will be the dogs nuts once it’s done! We also don’t see any modified cars so I’m excited to see what you do with it 👌🏻

That dash is insane, I work for a company that makes and assembles a whole dash module for a large car manufacturer.
We use screws to secure the dash onto a metal cross car beam, mainly all with screws and the only other being a bolt for the passenger airbag.

Fantastic videos Mat..loving price/ parts comparisons.
Typically on mass production cars the dashboards go in as completed sub assemblies brought to lineside and lifted in using that very 'crane' and bolted to the bulkhead. Granted, Astons are not your average mass production vehicle but would expect to see similar techniques, so all that strip down may not have been necessary.
    Good viewing though!!

Just gonna throw an idea at ya:
Could try use a engine hoist and some carefully placed chains + bolts to secure the aluminum framing. You have the windscreen out so it should give the hoist access.

Only 6 fixings are used to hold the IP to the bulk head panel. 2 either side of the A Pillars and 2 behind the IP Binnacle (you will need to use a 100mm socket extention as they are right down there)
Before you start you need to loosen the steering column from the rack and unclip the steering gator under the IP. Remember the pipes are going into the hvac unit aswell.
    Hope this helps
