      Yeah, most people would've sold this stuff to get money back from the robbery the insurance company probably committed.
      Sending this stuff to the next owner simply because they belong to the car is a rare move.

      Correct me if I’m wrong here but if you watch this video there was no green oring under the new fuel pump collar when he installed it. There was clearly a green oring when the old one came off. If you see what I saw let him know before it catches on fire again.

    Tom was sold the old part. New pump failed due to filling up to full on tanks. The car wizard said it in one of his videos about fuel pumps failing due to fueling top off. The parts guy remembered because he knows that he screwed the guy. Fault is still on Ferrrari for having shitty parts.Tom being so meticulous tells me he installed it better than what a dealer would do.

      One thought I had was that the "new" pump was someone else's return that was not properly checked before being added back to the seller's inventory.

      I belong to a motorcycle group on facebook and there's always customized bikes for sale and rarely do they include the factory parts. I tell em all: KEEP YOUR STOCK PARTS because just because YOU love what you did to YOUR bike, the next guy might not. Having the stock parts allows the new buyer to return it to stock and or do his own thing.

      I had the exhaust replaced on a car and the installer said, "Why do you want to keep the old exhaust? Just to take up room in your garage for 20 years, then another 20 for the next owner..?"

    Hi Sam. The mystery fire was more than likely caused by leaking fuel vapor, not the liquified fuel. There's a high probability that the vapor was escaping the newly installed pump/tank housing. Topping off the tank was the beginning of the end. If the tank was filled halfway, the vapor stays inside the tank. However, the heat of the engine combined with a full tank is a recipe for disaster. The thump the driver heard was more than likely the vapor igniting. What's unique about gas vapor, it can ignite with ANY spark or static in the engine bay. I say this from experience as a member of the Fiat 124 Sport Spider Fire Brigade. Take care.

      I would totally agree with the vapor catching and causing a loud whoosh sound. Maybe old fuel soaked wire shielding that just took the engine heating up to ignite. Engine bay heat soaks when you stop the engine to fill up.

      Just what I was thinking the filling up the tanks to maximum capacity is the key part of that letter I think. Poor seal some how for some reason.

      Vapor certainly but look at the electrical connector area. It seems more charred than the surrounding plastic. I have to wonder if there was a ring vapor leak (is there an O-Ring?) and the power connector was flooded and sparked. Really dumb to have the power connector parallel to an area that can be encroached with fluid/vapor.

    Looking at the charred pump and hearing the story I have a suspicion that the fuel line popped off the pump housings output. If you look at the charred pump it looks like there was no fuel line attached during the fire(based on where char and melt is). If a fuel line was fully attached then the connection wouldn't be burned the same way the bowl part is that normally leaks. My theory is that the fuel line popped off spraying fuel everywhere and igniting when coming in contact with the exhaust, my theory comes from the "thud" sound, the misfire right after(not getting fuel from there anymore) and the condition of the pump that burned.

    Speaking from experience, I'm pretty sure I know exactly what happened with the mysterious new / upgraded fuel pump. The pump that was purchased was actually a returned one that had the preexisting issue and someone just polished it up nicely and returned it keeping the new one and also got their money back. Its a scam that happens at all our local parts stores and the kids who "quality check" the returns are making min wage, so we all know how much effort they put into checking an item before restocking...

      I'd bet this is the case. Someone probably purchased a replacement pump installed it and then shortly after they did the revised pump was released. Replaced then again, put the recently replaced pump in new box and returned. Which would explain the double checking part number (on the box)

    1 thing I'd like to say: when you pump the gas into the car's tank, it is coming from the station's storage tank underground which is colder. If the car's tank is filled completely full, it will gain pressure when the fuel heats up & could result in the failure of the top assembly of the Ferrari's fuel pump.

      @@DC-si8xw Damaged vent/vapor recovery system, old brittle plastic and boom - the ring cracks and all the fuel which is now under pressure sprays out.
      From what I've gathered, the entire fuel system in these cars is barely better than a VW Bug. Seriously borderline engineering that's needlessly complex. Note that on most other cars, such a fault would result in an error code and vapor lock/very poor running. But on a Ferrari? Eject fuel pumps, please.

    Tom is a REAL car guy. Not only did he save all the original parts but he sent them on to the new owner; instead of selling them. A real purest. CUDOS.
    As far as the fire goes, my money is on fuel that leaked prior to the repair (He was afraid to drive the car without repair) probably sitting inside the loom of the wiring harneses or somewhere similar then once the car heated up.... Bang and fire. The second fire was obviously a continuation of the first probably from the foam insulation smouldering or reignighting due to the metal still being hot or sparked by a wire that was burned in the original fire.

      This is my bet as well; old fuel from before the repair caused the fire. A bottle of dish soap and the garden hose may have saved the day after a fuel system repair. But it is still terrifying that Ferrari sold a "new" part that looks just like the old part.

    Just a random thought, I’ve had a couple of tanks that have had problems of leaking that started with a large bang before it started leaking, 1 was due to a dodgy “temporary” repair and 3 were due to the tanks pressurising during filling from blocked breathers. But I’m not too sure on how the Ferrari system is but it’s just a thought.

The previous owner of that car should be awarded "Ferrari owner of the Year". That guy is so F-ing great I would really like to meet him. For someone to care so much and do so much for his car is unbelievable. That guy is probably what Ferrari would like every Ferrari owner should be... but its not.... And... really good video.     The giveaway here is the burnt output fitting on the pump top, if it cracked around the fitting, the car side of the fuel hose would be melted on that output fitting, for this output fitting to be melted like this, the car side must have not been seated and popped off, that could have been the thump, the hose popping off under pressure,

    I would be willing to bet that when he installed the old/new fuel pump he actually cracked the plastic with a small fracture and vapor built up and that was the thump he heard when a small amount of fuel spilled on hot exhaust and ignited the vapors. Tom seemed like a very smart guy but mistakes happen. It did not leak when almost empty, but leaked when the talk was full to the top.

      I was going to say similar. Mistakes happen. Perhaps the pump lock ring was not fully seated and a very small amount of gas or vapor was able to escape after the full fill up. The vapors ignited and that was the noise as others have said. Could also be a crack somewhere or a faulty part or a blocked vapor release system as others have suggested.

    Sam and Scott, I think the owner filled the tanks to the brim on his last drive before 'testing' the car. I also think that he hadn't seated the main seal on the fuel pump all the way to the tank (maybe he didn't tighten the plastic collar correctly). When he started to drive fast some fuel seeped out of that sealing area and got onto something hot resulting in a fire. This would explain why with maximum fuel onboard the car didn't quickly become an inferno....just a little seeped out. Just my educated guess (I've worked on chemical tankers and have seen what happens when an overfill gets into a pressure relief valve).

    It is possible the heat discolored the fuel pump whiter. If you look under the burned one it has some color on it. Also, the power wires are blue, original are red (?). I think it is a late model fuel pump. More inclined to think either the fuel hose popped off (was never seated correctly) or maybe the seal around the pump was not secure and vapors leaked out.

    This all made me remember a guy I used to work with, his side hustle was rebuilding old Ferrari alternators, or it might have been starters. Every day he would show up early to make his parts on the lathe before we opened. He was apparently pretty well known in the classic Ferrari community, people from around the world sent him dead Ferrari alternators, and he'd make them new again.

    the "thump" was fuel vapors igniting in an enclosed area. I have had this happen when i had the fuel pump out of a car, the hole was left uncovered for a day while I waited for the new part. I'm not sure exactly how it ignited, most likely static elctricity from me moving around in the garage. but when it did, it made a BIG thump, sounded like someone slamming the trunk lid.
    luckily the interior didn't catch fire, and all I had to do was squirt the fire extinguisher in the general area of the hole and the fire went out. I did have to drop and clean the tank. there was some singed cloth on the seats but otherwise no damage.

    One lesson to take away from this saga: carry a fire extinguisher in your car!!! $60 can save you thousands and thousands of $$ fire damage, not to mention possibly lives.

    Tbf, knowing how well the owner took care of his documents and parts, not to mention the car itself, I would not have hesitated to buy this car in the condition it was in. You really managed to get a good ferrari for a decent price! I bet Tom is happy to see his old baby getting brought back from the dead :)

    My best guess is; yes he was sold a new old syle/stock pump as the shop he got it from probably had it for over a decade and it could have been produced three years after the car was made. New old stock/Deadstock is good but it was still made years ago. The Parts shop should have been updated, and part never sold.

    When Tom was telling the story he said that he filled the tank to the top. From personal experience the issue could have been the Evap system. I had that one in my Ferrari with the Evap system filled up with fuel from topping off too much and had to replace the whole system. If that would have leaked fuel it would have been exactly as described. Normally the Evap system will only have fumes not liquid fuel. If the panels were in the engine compartment it may not have caught on fire as the fuel may have leaked behind the panel and not on the headers, but it would have eventually caused a CEL with a code.

    I would imagine the smallest of all leaks from one of the hoses that was replaced would have leaked heavily under pressure. Another possibility is if the top of the fuel pump was cross, threaded, and it was not an issue at the beginning, but when the fuel tank was full, it caused it to leak.

    I'm retired Navy Aviation and I've been thru Aircraft Fire Fighting training quite a few times, and responded to quite a few aircraft fires; having said that? The 'THUMP' was the initial ignition of the fuel/air mix in a confined space.

    If the issue is endemic to the brand? and it sounds like it is, I think you may wish to look at installing two stand alone systems. 1. A fire detection system that has several thermocouples mounted around the fuel pumps since that is where the fires appear to center. Possibly photo-censors to 'see' fire light. 2. A fire suppression system, with an activation switch located on the dash next to the 'FIRE' annunciator light that both cuts off electricity to the fuel pumps and activates a fire extinguisher that emits suppressant over the fuel pumps (primaries) and the engine bay (secondary).

    What a blessing Tom was to have kept, and then provided, all that insight - he clearly cherished the vehicle. On the fire root cause agree, looks like there was an old style fuel pump against the replacement part number - didn't catch where it was bought from but somewhere in this there's been a screw up, whether it was OEM putting wrong pump in the new box or distributer supplying old pump when revised was ordered. From the fact there's letters into Ferrari I'd guess it was the former and there's been a screwup in parts logisitics. My final guess is could, somehow, someone have ordered the replacement pump, swapped it with their own low faulty one and then returned it for a refund and it's been restocked into the system? This would explain a lack of obvious blame for the problem and could be down to some clown wanting to save $$'s on replacing pumps without considering what the knock on affect to someone else would be 😡

    Maybe the previous owner just screwed the collar back on one thread crooked; I have replaced fuel pumps (not on a Ferrari though) and it is easy to screw the collar on crooked because the plastic just gives a little way. Other possibility I thought about is the tank ventilation is faulty (blocked), so it builds up pressure in the fuel tank, especially when he just filled it up to the top. Just some thoughts, I might be completely off.

    My initial thought is the the fuel feed pipe on top of the new pump assembly did not clip fully in place. It popped off, fuel was being pumped over the hot exhaust manifold area and ignited, hence the boom/whoosh noise. Simultaneously the car starting running poorly as it was being starved of fuel.
    I was the guy, in the main hall, who tapped you on your shoulder at Farnborough Scott !! The guy who's wife immediately said 'who was that'.......then raised her eyes to the ceiling when I told her 'you were my you tube idol......'

    i would guess the fuel line backed off the pump. that's why the car ran bad before he shut it off. fuel pump sprayed fuel directly out of the pump covering the tank. igniting off probably the headers or who knows what. car ran terrible because there was little to no fuel getting to the passenger side bank of the engine as it lost fuel pressure and fuel all together. It's really the only thing that makes sense if you ask me. I don't know if you came up with the same conclusion yet or not I'm only at 21:28 in the video so but yeah just at from the way i see it the only way things could've went down the way they did.

      yep! pressurize system and he must've just not put it all the way on. may have just caught the edge of the retainer or something and then after some time on pressure POP. it explains it all. the pop/bang he heard the engine running like ass and the fire. I kinda feel bad for him he lost something he clearly cared about so much over something so simple. I mean I'd love a 430 too so i get it but when working with fuel systems you gotta double and triple check everything... I'd be pulling hard af on those fuel lines... making damn sure they ain't gonna come back off. its not an old dirtbike or something dealing with gravity fed carbs. there's loads of pressure in those systems. maybe not so much right there at the pump but still enough to blow a line and shoot some fuel.@@captcory

    Makes me wonder if the collar was bad when Tom replaced the pump and when the tank was pressurizing, (tom heard that pop) and the collar popped a thread , de-pressurized it and allowed fuel to leak out from that collar/seal onto the manifold and started the minor fire. Maybe.🤷🏻‍♂️

    Those pumps are made and recalled by the same OEM with the same cap for many cars. My old Maserati did the same thing. Fortunately on a QP5 the leak is nowhere near the exhaust. So a reliable repair was filling the entire “X” with fuel-safe clear epoxy. It held for 133k mikes until I sold the car with the uninstalled updated pump still in the box. So if anyone insists on running legacy design pumps then be sure to seal the “X” as it’s the only place I’ve seen them fail on F cars or other Italian exotics.
    Upon replacement/update I’d still seal that area as a preventative measure. It takes 5 minutes for a lifetime of security.

    That whump / bang that the owner heard was the fuel -warmed and evaporated to a gaseous state and exploding. Remeber that petrol is five times as explosive as dynamite! I had exactly the same experience in a VW beetle when I was a teenager!

    You did an amazing job of restoring this beautiful red car. Tyler Hoover also had a car like this burn from the same issue 3 or 4 years ago. I believe to damage to his car may have been worse. He sold it to a young man. I don't know if the car was ever repaired

    Great video follow up to the 12 day repair video. On the note of "what might have happened" you said to replace the fuel pump you need undo the tank mounts and angle it to access the pump. I scrolled back in the video and the Car Diary says the refuel just prior to the fire was 22.74(or .79) galleon. This suggest the tanks were drained prior to fitting the new pump, the car fuelled from a can then driven to the filling station and topped off, could the "loud bang" have been the right side tank resettling itself due to the added weight ? If so could that have caused the leak ?

    Interesting conclusion to this series Sam. It would come down to either him getting an old fuel pump that was faulty, or him accidently damaging the ring on install from your description. Both seem plausible and its not everyday a parts guy remembers a fuel pump, so there could be more than face value

    was following a thread on a classic car group recently about fuel coming out the filler. one person commented that fuel in below ground tanks is cooler so once you put it in the car it expands. maybe he filled it too full and the seal on the pump wasn't seated properly so it leaked. it happened after he filled up.

    The picture of burning F355 that was shown in the video was my car. A fuel line in the engine bay was rubbing against one of its clips and wore through. The accident happened in 2010 at Honister Pass in the Lake District in the UK. Italian design, Fiat build quality!

      @@Ratarossa Wow, long time no speak. 😎 I bought a ex driving experience 360 Spider after the 355 went flambé on me. It was a project car that I ran and repaired over several years. It was off the road more than it was in the road. I used to joke that every time I drove it, it cost me a grand (thinking back, maybe it wasn't a joke) 😂😂😂 I've retired in the Philippines so no more Ferraris for me as the import tax makes exotic cars 3 to 4 times more expensive in the Philippines than in the UK. Imagine having to pay £200,000 for a F430. Yeesh. 😜

    The most likely cause of the fire was over-filling the fuel tank. We all like to add more after the pump clicks off, but cars where the engine heat is near the fuel tank will cause expansion of the fuel and pressure. Next, the "pop" is that expansion escaping, and next is a fire. 98% of cars have the tank and engine at opposite ends to prevent heat expansion. What's needed on exotic mid-engine or rear engine cars is an expansion tank like hot water heaters have; or, never over-fill your tank!

    Sounds to me like the pumps high pressure hose popped off at the push lock fitting, likely the plastic retaining piece got broken when the old owner disassembled it without the correct tool ..which may have been the thump, then Loss of fuel pressure caused the engine to die . Hose blew off hit the cabin wall and the car died while catching fire.
    Also you have to note on the burned one there is no fuel line connector melted to the fuel output fitting . And it's evenly melted ie had no hose or connector in place when it burned

    My Mercedes had the same issue. Top of the fuel pump cracked and seeped fuel. I noticed a fuel smell while it was parked in the garage and traced it to the cracked fuel pump. Not sure how this happens other than manufacturing error since the pump is all buttoned up under the rear seats and can't be tinkered with unless you remove the rear seat and steel covers, but it happens.

    The thump sounds like a thump of gas vapor igniting like when you put gas on an unlit fire and when you light it you get that thump. Liquid gas doesn't burn its the vapor that burns. The fact that he recovered the complete full tank of fuel tells me that there was not a liquid fuel leak but a vapor leak. That vapor built up when he was driving it and the thump was it igniting the running rough was due to wiring melting and killing the fuel pump. The reignition of the fire was most likely due to heat and the original fuel vapor leak and the added heat from the fire obviously made the gas evaporate faster. Idk much about Ferraris and have no idea what the setup is for vapor reclamation but my experience with vehicles in general is long and very indepth and i would have to say that its likely that the problem still exists with the car. Theres a fuel vapor leak and likely will not be a big deal unless you have full tanks of fuel maybe a hairline crack in the tank or some flaw in the vapor canister or whatever is used if anything is used kn the vehicle. If no canister is used that maybe the entire flaw and with 25 gallons of gas near a heat source increasing the evaporation rate of the gas with full tanks and no where for the vapor to go forcimg it out of the possible hairline crack or whatever vapor leak exists. I have a bad feeling that the problem is still present and advise that you don't put alot of gas im it

    One theory I had is that the “new old stock” pump was installed at room temp or colder. The ring was over tightened, then when engine started to warm up, no cover to block heat even, the plastics expanded. This caused a crack in the pump somewhere in high pressure line (bang heard). Engine starved of fuel ran poorly, high pressure fuel ignited, but flow stopped when turned off so very little was burned.

    I believe the burned pump was a new version. If you look carefully at the underside of it you see some of the similar yellow/orange that the new ones are, and the heat could have easily faded the coloring to make it look lighter than before. Plastics and chemical pigments react differently to heat, and some will do exactly as I'm describing.
    Which leaves it to installation error more likely. It also points to that with the comments about the pumps taking years to fail even if they are the old version.
    Nice drivable restoration, well done.

    Fair play nice of the previous owner with the fire damaged pump try cuttin a bit of the plastic off with soem wire cutters as the fire wouldn’t discolour the inside of the plastic u can determine if it’s the og one easier then

    My guess is it leaked around to top and when he turned onto the interstate the fuel sloshed.out.
    The next time I work on a fuel pump I am going to make sure it will run an evap monitor on the obdii before filling the tank.
    I have been in the situuation whe I have filled a tank only to have petrol leaking under the car after driving.however most cars do not have hot exhaust parts under their fuel tanks so most fuel leaks under the car do not ignite.

    The fuel line fitting blew off the top of the fuel pump.... Had it still been connected during the fire, it would have become melted together ( with the pump) the same way the fuel pump electrical connector is melted together with the pump.
    Although... had it been connected the fire would never started to begin with.👍

    He collected 25.3 gallons not including what had been used and burned. You explained the rated capacity is 25.1 gallons, so I surmise that he overfilled the tank, once the engine reached temp it caused the fuel to expand, the weakest part will be the plastic on the fuel pump. Would this explain why one caught fire and the other was leaking?

    Sam, great post mortem on the 430, as usual (most times it involves over budget expenditures) Don't have much experience with Italian iron, so this is a moon shot based on experience of product design and supply chain development by others than the name on the vehicle. The king of this is Land Rover and BMW/Ford. To attain entry into the North American market, evaporative emissions capture and processing must be demonstrated. My guess, the Lion pulled a generic vacuum pump design that relies on the fuel cell/tank vent for the make up air. The fuel evaporation vapors are then sent to the intake manifold as additional fuel load to the injection system. If not correctly designed or installed these systems cannot safely be injected into the intake manifold in liquid status. Alas, Tom's fuel measurements of the fuel removed would seem to indicate the tank(s) were overfilled. Check the line/hoses leading away from the vacuum pump(s) and the routing of the left and right fuel cell vents. My guess the vacuum pumps were handling liquid, not vapor. These lines are usually flimsy polyethylene tubing with flimsier elbows and couplings. On a high end vehicle, these should be SS braided PTFE with Aeroqiup fittings. If it is, all that $$$ hanging on less than $20 of plastic.

    I think this was caused by a loose or leaky fuel fitting. Different cars I have seen (GM) the use plastic retainers on the pump and after replacing the pump they are too weak to maintain the proper pressure and after a few miles of driving the fuel lines will just pop back off the pump spraying fuel everywhere in the worst case. I thing this was what caused the fire and it caught fire before a more major fuel leak started.

    Great video, as usual. Perhaps when the petrol tank was filled, then driven, the fuel expanded, became pressurised and it managed to leak out through a gap that was there from the new pump being installed incorrectly? It didn’t leak before because the tank was empty. That’s my hypothesis.

    It’s nice Thomas, they should import to the US. I wouldn’t leave my Audi’s for one since Vdub only does the 4 cylinder, but it’s a nice alternative to small premium SUV’s and perhaps the A4 Allroad and Volvo wagons.

    When I was dating my former fiancee, she lived in Scituate MA, and we drove by a fire at a gas station. Turns out the car on fire was a Ferrari 355 I think, owned by the drumber of the band Aerosmith. I think he got some burns trying to put it out. This was in the mid to late 90's. I forget now. Long time ago.
