I bought this 1989 BMW 635csi which had been stored in a barn for around 20 years and left to rust away. Im hoping to restore the BMW and upgrade it as i go along. But first we need to deal with the rust situation!

Come on, get back on this!!! Of all your videos this is by far the one i want to watch most!! Come on Matt get on it.
Agreed.
search for Yorkshire Car Restoration, then e24. the bodywork went to them now. they have more clips on it.
@fenty180680 @christopherruizchiu9730
5 months later and still waiting for a part 3 😢. I hope you haven’t given up man
Was just asking myself the same question bro😂
Itching for the next instalment on the E24 Mat. Any progress? Do love that car!
@@brucster66 we all are!
yeah and what about the m5 part 4 ?
@@rafaelmartinmeuldijk6030 he’s just started that project and i think he’s focused onit right now. Expect it soon 🤷🏻♂️
As a BMW Technician of the 80's and 90's, I relived every nut an bolt you removed from this car! Looking forward to watching how this one pans out! PS I was shouting "Undo the torque converter bolts otherwise you will have an ATF shower!". We've all done it! 😁
Resto mod all the way matt. It wouldn’t be your channel if you kept all you cars standard! Making this the ultimate sleeper with a b58 engine would be sick. Standard ish outside, m3 killer under the hood!
And I say this more because you have the cheek to doubt yourself! As if you wouldn’t be able to!
Do what you want to it! The content will be forever entertaining!!
This bloke has a genuine, brilliant and positive vibe hence why the channel is becoming so popular.
Do a full engine rebuild, putting a turbo would change the way the car feels and drives massively. Would recommend keeping it standard
Ebay turbo all day long
You don't perhaps watch Mighty Car Mods? Cause that's something they would do 🤣
yeah I agree, I'd have kept it as stock as possible, and would've kept the automatic transmission too, because that's not a sporty car, it's a luxury coupé made to slide on the road
If any of you are expecting Mr Armstrong to keep the car standard then you obviously have not been paying attention to any of his previous videos lol.
@@marcocartalli7503 what about the M6 Manual gearbox 3.5 24valve 255+ bhp is that not Sporty ?
Good morning Matt, Great to see that you are doing so well and now have another unit to work in.
Mat, I've been watching your BMW being brought back to life at Yorkshire car restoration. The guy has done an awesome job sorting the rust out. Well, I hope you finish it because it will look nice with your upgrades.
1 year later and still waiting for Part 3😬 Hopefully this will not be cancelled project as it is Amazing Barn find. For balance would be great to have some old classics.☺
I always been saying that the best things are found by accident... I found Mat channel yesterday or day before while searching for something else. Watched a few videos and moved to do my stuff. I get back to it this morning and - you believe or not - it’s almost 4 o’clock and I keep watching next videos (BMW E24 at the moment) 😉
I could say a lot about the content and the creator but I’ll keep it short: I haven’t seen someone so passionate and dedicated in awhile! And I haven’t watched one CZcams channel videos constantly for over 6 hours for many years. Well done Mat, you’ve got my respect buddy ✊
Man your channel just shows how much alot of drive can change your life. We all love watching these videos. But the amount of work it takes to make this channel this much fun is a crazy amount. Just knowing you started this journey 3 years ago is so inspiring.
Be good to see how this goes, had a 1980 635csi as my first car when i was 17 in 1989. Mine was gold to (regd LCW466W). Ran it until 1995 when i finished uni and took it up from 80k to 160k miles. What an experience, it was in lovely condition when i got it but soon rusted, i fitted 2 new front wings in 1992 (£500 each then!). Trx michelin tyres were a fortune about £150 each in 1990, so i used to get part worns from a shop in Blackburn. Auto gearbox went in about 1990 and i fitted a used one for £500, cylinder head gasket went on the way to uni in leeds in 1991, so i stripped the top of the engine had the head skimmed and did all the gaskets, it was the best sound in the world when i fired it up again two weeks later. Welded new sills on in 1994. Exhaust back boxes were a fortune back in the day and seemed to last about 2 years before blowing baffles out. As for mods to the engine id be wary about fitting a turbo, they were quiet tail happy and it might make it a bit of a handful. It taught me how to opposite lock oversteer. So really enjoying your vids on this and ive subscribed, good luck with this lovely old motor. I remember looking at the high lines when they were brand new in the bm dealers back in 1989 and they were 38 grand! That was a fortune at the time and about the price of a decent detatched house around Lancashire. 👍
Would love to see if he tries some ALPINA touches on this project that would be really awesome and final product might be even more valuable..
Otherwise this will be a very good series to watch indeed.. ! ;0)
Fuck man that was an awesome read
Wow, what an experience at such a young age. You must be tempted to buy a Highline now surely?
"automatic gearbox went in" 🤨
thank you Mat for sharing your successes with us! Been watching since the S5 being built in the driveway, to borrowing spaces at MP then to your own unit and now another additional unit. Looking forward to see you having an entire garage of builds one day!
The way you keep progressing this channel is incredible 👏
Great to get a full on laugh Mat, absolutely brilliant! Your enthusiasm is infectious and always makes me smile. I was 25 in 1989 and I’m so looking forward to seeing this car being restored. It was the dogs back then. ✌️
Thank you for helping me get through Covid. I believe I have watched all of your videos. You and your crew are doing a lot more than rebuild vehicles. Thank you!!!
My dad used to have a BMW 3.0CI when I was a kid. (VAK 529K)
You never forget the time you first hear the classic BMW roar.
Loving this series, can’t wait to see the end result!!
Congrats Mat 👏
My vote, keep this one standard, it's a classic.
Mat I’m so happy for you! You’ve truly come a long way, in my opinion you’re the best CZcamsr and you deserve this the most 💪🏻 Keep on growing because we love to see you succeed!!
crazy. I bought a 1979 series 1 early this year, and the shape is being blown up by big car you tubers! Great to see the oldies and not just the typical new G M3s and M5s that everyone is talking about
Full rebuild being as honest to the original as possible. You have enough beasts. Need a classic beauty!
Nearly 200k views within 24hr. Matt you really are insanely brave and inspiring to so many people. Incredible to have been watching for around 2yr and the journey is unbelievably impressive. Keep going 💪🏼🙌🏼💯
As a Mechanical Engineering student its an absolute treat to see this full build! Keep it up.
I would love 1 episode where you just sand blast all the rusted stuff. I mean alllllll of it. Every frame, underbody, parts etc etc
I ran a 635csi for 6 years - on a budget - I was a clerical assistant in a local authority! You won't believe the power of that motor when it's hooked to a manual box! I had the close-ratio dog leg box and never got beat, in 6 years! You're going to love it! :)
Mat, this channel is the nuts! I'm going to thoroughly enjoy this restoration and all the new challenges you will face 👍
Mat Armstrong is taking over the world, and I'm here for it!!! 💪🏼 Well done Mat, absolutely love the channel 💜
Loving the 80s background music for this series lol
*The levels this man has gotten to with what he is doing on cars is inspiring I remember watching him when he was just doing smaller bits now he is taking out engines and changing gearboxes remember watching what he did with the slip diff on the bmw smashing it mate* 👏
my first time commenting bro, i really enjoy watchingyour videos and u do inspire me to work on bigger projects. good job man
Can't wait to see where you go with this BMW Mat 😊👍🏼
Shame it ain’t a ford though😌
Hey Adam 👋😁
@@jacobbedford566 Why did the chicken cross the road?
@@jacobbedford566 Barum Engines Matt!
You know what I love, Matt is so honest and normal and like just like the rest of us. Open about never done it before but watched videos (I was the same with half my mechanics on my motorbikes). Takes a lot to go give something like that a go with no prior experience. Fortune favours the brave. Good on ya mate. (Viewer since the E350 days) 👍
Been waiting for a part 3, this is my fav car and ur one of the few people that do a restoration on one.
When this guy posts a new video it makes my day
Keep up the good work mat 👏 👍 👌
I'd love to see this car stay standard, but I can't wait to see you do an engine swap some day.
I'm usually a keep it as standard guy too, but Mat has such an imagination for this kind of thing, I wouldn't complain if he deviates and puts his own twist on it.
I am loving this restoration or modification of the 635 it makes a change from the more modern cars I’m 63 and theses bmw were around when I was a young lad great to watch well done again
I'm in awe of people like yourself Matt who push themselves beyond what they believe is achieveable. Enjoy watching your videos especially this one as its a 635 BMW. All the best for the future & keep those videos rolling.
Steve.
Hi Matt, I would look at dropping the later 3.8 E34 M5 Engine into this. It will fit the gearbox and engine mounts and has been done before. E34 M5 brakes are also straight swop.
Jes jou ken but it is rare engine
Is good idea
Would love to see you do a camper van conversion. Keep up the good work, loving the content
Nice to see the lads at Yorkshire working on this. Years ago, a friends father bought and restored one of these after his son, a friend of mine, died of a brain aneurysm. Working on his one gave him time to heal. I drove it after and loved it. Wouldn’t mind buying my own one day. Perhaps in red, which looks amazing on these.
Just a tip for old rusty cars especially...try to get everything you can with an impact gun at first. This can save you so many headaches with snapped bolts by shocking the bolt loose.
I just love that you’re turning your talent to some of the old stuff. No better boy to get her straight. Onwards and upwards Mat. Continued success to you.
I am enjoying the series. Would love more old BMW restorations :)
Agree 👍
Agreed!
If he gets this done, I am not sure Mat will agree!
Crash dameg'd Bmw M8
Love the 80’s soundtrack 👍
Just in the process of watching the body repair videos. Christ I wouldn't want that bill through my door. That guy truly is a great metal worker..
Really enjoying this BMW restoration so far.
Congratulations on the second unit Mat, and definitely need to see more of “Shellsuit Armstrong” 😂😂
These are the ones I've been waiting for ... having a bunch of old BMW's on my channel this is so motivating Mat!!! Not to mention this series has got me close to buying one of these again haha. About to open a beer and watch lol. Love the fact that you really ,mix up the cars and push the content ... as always it is really inspiring ... so much that there is a Bentley Continental on my channel at the minute which is in no small part down to inspiration from you! Lets go!!
Definitely Subbing
… me too
nice
My good sir, I’m going to subscribe to your channel.
Now then Dan, get one bought and on the channel..!
Well done matt , commitment positivity self belief, and blood sweat and tears pays off.
This channel is about giving cars the Armstrong treatment! Plenty of channels doing restorations already... I'd like to see a engine swap like a Honda K series and some awesome styling or body kit.
Awesome episode. Looking forward to how this series turns out. Keep up the good work.
Been well over a year 2024 now where’s an update
This might be the best set of videos to watch .. cant wait to see this at the end.. will be great in a deep dark green colour
Nothing like a classic, a classic BMW!!! Enjoying this and on to the next video
Well done Matt , great to see success. Hope you’ve learned to take the torque converter out with the box , saves the mess …., keep up the good work.
Loving the series, can’t wait to see this one of a beast in action.😁
Honestly probably the only content creator I currently enjoy watching on CZcams, all the best to you Mat thanks for the entertainment as well as the knowledge you pass along will be here when you hit 1 Million subs and ill be here when you hit 10 Mil aswell. keep up the great work
Im impressed you pulled the trans successfully without unbolting the torque converter, props!
Been waiting for this episode! Always love watching bmws get the love that they deserve.
Excellent work dude.. work hard play hard. All the best, keep up the great vids
It's amazing to see how well you're doing. Seeing you grow like this is so inspiring
I'm from Calgary, Alberta, Canada (Or as it's now known....Chinada lol). All kidding aside Matt to take on a car that is as bad as this from rust corrosion and rot is just too much for even most of us up here in Salted roads land. I LOVE this car and build but I fear you may have bitten more off than you wanted. I'm rooting for you all the way though. This is my very favorite build out of them all so far. Thank you!
Awesome work Matt , a turbo on it would be cool🚗💨💨 or m3 or m4 or m5 engine😉🔧👍
1.5 year later and still no part 3
Been waiting a year for part 3 man, hope you haven't gave up on this legend

Since it‘s a classical, iconic car I would love to see it restored as is.
Hey Mat! Just wanted to say I’m loving this new series, definitely the most exciting and an even bigger step up than the E46! I’m sick with Long COVID atm, so keep the content coming to deal with the boredom! Can’t wait to see this when it’s eventually finished aha
@@gerrythecarenthusiast Cheers!
Any one 2024 ? 😂😂❤
Search Yorkshire car restoration. They are busy with the body work.
Man this guy makes my day each time
I always find it easier to drop the engine out from underneath and left the body off it. Saves all the messing around trying to avoid damaging stuff in the bay and lifting it high enough to clear everything to be moved away.
Did you scrap this car? Would love to see what you ended up doing with it.......
Check out Yorkshire car restoration they have been doing the body work on the car.
Mat! Good on you, mate! From what I can see, the growth is well deserved!
Once you get through with this E24, would you be keen on doing a "day in the life of" video, where we see what goes in to your production?
Talk about letting the car repair center’s know of your presence! They are in for a treat! Well done mate couldn’t have been more proud of your hard work and achievements! Now with regards to this build I would say try and stay as original as possible. In the end, it is a classic 🚘 👍🏼
Good on you Mat. Please take care of that BMW. That is an icon....👍👍👍
Option 1: Either restore & turbo the engine.
Option 2: Put a good quality E46 330ci or M3 engine in it!
S54s are stupid money. He would be best with a B58 from an M140i
Or:
Option3: Rebuild it as BMW intended with that engine.
1chish, I don’t understand why you watch matts channel if your a complete purist ? You complained about the Range Rover being wrapped and not staying classic now your on it again about this build and not keeping it standard. Matt clearly highly modifies all his builds in a way that he pushes himself to the next level everytime. Strange that you would think he would keep anything standard and that you feel the need to put your irrelevant point across again…
@@calvinbradford1042 Well well well. So you have nothing of value to offer so you just make random insults? How very CZcams.
1. No of course you don't understand because you cannot accept different opinions. If it doesn't conform to what YOUR opinion then you rubbish it.
2. Not that I have to explain Jack Shit to you Calvin but I watch his channel because I totally admire what the guy does and how he has built a terrific channel. Who are you the gatekeeper?
3. You then start the usual stereotyping but no I am no 'purist'. I have probably built more cars than you have Calvin and first cut my teeth on rally Lotus Cortinas. If you saw the Mini I am building it has a BMW K Series Twin Cam head on a 1098 block. Never been done before. Oh wait you can. Its on my channel! 🤦♂
4. I did not complain about anything. That is totally YOUR misrepresentation. In fact my only comment (other than complimenting Matt on a superb build) was about the wrap which I disliked. Its called opinions and sometimes they differ. Except in your world apparently.
5. either am I 'on it again' Calvin sorry to disappoint you. I felt I should offer some advice given I am probably over 3 times his age (75) and first owned BMWs 50 years ago. Including one of these so I know a bit about them and their values. Unlike you.
6. And then this pile of BS:
"Strange that you would think he would keep anything standard and that you feel the need to put your irrelevant point across again"
No its only 'strange' to a complete Mong like you. Its you making the presumption he would never do a restoration and keep it standard but that is up to Matt not you. Unless you are his spokesman?
And lastly who the F*CK are you to call anything others write as 'irrelevant'? Especially as everything you contributed was totally irrelevant to the video or the Thread.
Jog off and do one ....
What happen to this one then
This is my favourite build out of all of them this is the one I want to see the most 😍
Love the square space advert 😂😂
What happened to the next part ?😅

All these nice cars and we are all wanting the old bmw ,crazy !
I had a slightly surreal experience on Sunday morning. Whilst sitting in traffic just outside Southampton, a red Aston Martin Vantage with the registration 0007 BMX crept past. The colour in person looks less vibrant red than on my screen but it suited the car beautifully.
I admire your hustle. You must be absolutely grinding day in and out to pump this many videos and not only that but you can tell you know the backend well too. Keep it up
You have put in an amazing amount blood sweat and tears over the time you’ve been on CZcams, and you deserve all the success in the world, it’s great to see a young person making things happen, well done Mat
Well done folks! You are now living the dream for thousands of us.
The only channel where i click "like" before i even watch the video.
Make it mental! Its past being a classic! You wont ever go completely mental with your other current builds (they're too valuable). Big engine space...go all MA on it 🔥 Keep modifying and upgrading as you go.
Not long and you'll have a million subs! Keep up the great work 👍
4:01 … i could smell that through my screen. Gearbox oil smells like cat piss at its best yet alone sitting for 20 years. Fair play as always Mat, great content never fails to entertain
Absolute legend Mat! Made up how you are reaping the rewards of hard work!
Inspirational and living proof you are the creator of your own destiny! Love the content, love the enthusiasm.
Best wishes to you, Hannah and of course super Kevin 🙏 long may this amazing journey continue!!!
This is the car I look forward to seeing finished the most .
Glad you bought it.
Well done Matt. So happy for you
Agree. 8 months. We need more E24 content!
Total respect to you Mat for taking on this project!!!!
I know youll of already done it by the time i commented but if it was me i would just clean up and derust all the engine and leave it as it is as further down the line it will increase its value by having it's original engine in. Weve done done all our engine on our 1996 rover 620si and now its all clean and no rust it looks a beauty!!
You have come a long way in a short space of time. Well done to you mat. You are an inspiration keep doing what your done, and long may you continue to grow from strength to strength.
Great job started.
Loving the 80s music on this.
How sad am I? 😂
Couldn't help watch again and forgot to say🤦 Congratulations on the new G Unit ,well deserved, Really cant wait to watch part3
Love watching you progress from an East Mids boy to a full on Jamaican 🇯🇲
Love it! Congrats on the new unit Matt! Can’t believe how quickly things have changed from the drive to double unit!!
My man. Going to love how the BM is going to turn out man and massive congratulations on the new unit man. Remember the days of the drive way and car parks and now 2 units. Unstoppable man. Well done sir 👏🏿👍
An old rusty car- the test of a true mechanic! These videos get better and better!
I hope Ryan gets the credit he deserves for doing all the rust repair in Yorkshire
