Other cool fact is that NFL used when lighting was poor in 1940's after WWII, an all light tan ball/called the white ball for night games. Before 1940's lighting for NFL or for that matter most outdoor sports, lighting was not there enough to even play, so no night games or at least very few. Only in early 1950's did lighting get better using theater spotlights on a tall pole a few of them, not just one on each pole to not need the night game ball.

The NFL in the beginning did permit stripes on the ball, especially for use in night games televised or not, until 1976. Also, the NFL's football named "The Duke" was named after the Giants co-founder Tim Mara's son Wellington Mara's nickname.

  • @3Dsjk
    @3Dsjk Před 8 měsíci +7

The Canadian ball has the same overall dimensions as the American ball, but it is slightly less pointed, more like a rugby ball.
Regarding the kicking back and forth, you are allowed to drop kick the ball at any time in the CFL, and anyone behind the kicking player is considered onsides and can recover it, including the kicker. This season a player drop kicked the ball a few feet and recovered it himself, giving his team an automatic first down. Several years ago, on the last play of a tie game, one team missed a field goal, but touchbacks (on kicks at least) are worth one point, so the defense needed to get the ball out of their endzone or they would lose the game. They kicked it out, the other team recovered and kicked in back in, there was a scramble for the ball, and eventually the original kicking team recovered the ball for a touchdown. It’s a fun league.

Many years ago Spalding made the CFL football. The league called it the J5V.
Why did the league call it the J5V? Because back in the early days of the CFL they sourced their original ball from rugby 🏉 balls purchased out of the Eaton's catalogue... The rugby ball was located. In Section J, page 5, item V. Aka, later as the league developed its own ball calling it the J5V.
Eventually in the 2000's the CFL contracted Wilson to make CFL footballs.

These balls clearly have MAGNETS in them. There was a game last Sunday - Texans v Broncos - in which 3 FGs were definitely affected by something strange inside the ball. The Broncos kicker looked genuinely amazed that his 1st kick that looked like it was going a mile wide actually was good. There was no wind (indoors) so how did the ball swing left to right by 20 yards? Answer: MAGNETS. I love the NFL but its really just WWE with a (dodgy) ball....

Btw, it (the microchip) will also end up being able to replace the idiotic chains on the sidelines, which they have almost done it now…(if you have been paying VERY close attention in recent years, you will have noticed a rather large decline in as many on-field chain measurements for first downs as you once did, even when coaches ask, which is surprising).
Some of this is due to the fields being so much better at all levels, the communication systems on officials keep them from having to travel on field to huddle for discussions & they can also have support “from above,” whether they admit it or not. They are trying to speed games up on every level.
The NC/SC Shrine Bowl was earlier today, one where half the NC Roster barely got to practice (they were in state championship games last week) & it STILL took 4 hours.
The last two TDs were scored w/ less than 4 min in 4th, so it was a VERY boring, VERY low scoring game (10 pts, TOTAL) before that last 4 min, for 4 hours almost.

Do you ever have to wonder where a soccer ball is? Just a suggestion so people like me don't don't pick other sports over football because you simply never see the ball unless it's loose or in the air and then there's hardly 20 minutes of actual live playing time per hour of TV coverage. There is actually stories of recovers getting drafted and have a really hard time in the pros and they use the excuse that the ball dosent have stripes on it so it’s harder to see..

I’m thinking about a premise for a movie in which a long time basement dwelling NFL team is able to insert a remote control guidance circuit into the football that is targeted by a joystick manned by the nerdy inventor in the stadium booth. Every pass could theoretically be complete. Of course there would have to be incompletions to make it realistic and hide the cheating. Perhaps starring Will Ferrell as the HC of the team.

CFL balls also have chips now. So now they're back to collecting balls kicked into the crowd.

I always thought the stripes were to help kickers. I also thought they were to help throwers know where to place their hands.

So the mendela affect hit me hard because i dont watch a lot of NFL football, and I never noticed that the ball doesn't have a stripe, like whenever i picture a football in my head i see a stripe stranger still that its the CFL full ring, i guess it makes a little sense since i watch more NCAA that i see the half stripe and when it's spinning in the air looks like a full ring but still

To add to your history of the football, a white ball with black stripes was used for night games until 1956, since stadium lights were pretty crappy. So the legend goes,as more teams wore white jerseys it was discontinued as it was thought the white ball could be “hidden” against the shirts (which doesn’t explain why the Browns couldn’t hide a brown ball against brown shirts, unless it’s because of the chip or the fact we have games in HD, yeah that must be it , right)

  • @smallwhitegnome

Clearly its because the refs would confuse the ball as one of their own amd eject anyone who dares to touch it
