- How much fiber should you eat each day? Only 5% of Americans are getting enough, leaving the other 95% at greater risk for developing serious health complications! They may possibly even be feeling cranky since there is a good chance they are backed up!
Dr. Will Bulsiewicz is back to clear up confusion and clean out your system as he joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to reveal how much fiber you should be eating. More importantly, he’ll tell you how easy it is to get it!
Dr. Bulsiewicz is a practicing gastroenterologist and author of the bestselling book Fiber Fueled.
Chuck also opens The Doctor’s Mailbag to have Dr. B answer more questions about gut health:
- Can dehydration cause constipation?
- Can turmeric relieve constipation?
- Why do apples make people poop?
- Does non-organic produce harm gut bacteria?
- Which foods contain natural probiotics?
- And many more!
Have a question? Leave it in the comments or chat and we'll get to as many as we can.

Thanks Dr B. Learned a lot today about the relationship between fiber and constipation.
@Amy Tseng Have you read any books? He has a fiber cook book which came out not that long ago. I tried fiber last year I lost 26 pounds in 28 days. Doing his first fiber book I eat meat but much less then I used to.

Hi As usual very entertaining and very informative. from the uk
Great lessons !
Awesome Info, than you both!
One of my fav doctor! can't get enough of Dr Will and of course our fantastic Chuck!
After watching this video, I took 200 mg of citrate magnesium daily and ate oatmeal porridge with dried nuts, black sesame, and chia seeds for breakfast.
A lot of fiber! Even though I‘m a veggie eater, my fiber intake wasn’t enough to regulate my bowl system.
You know, now my intestine is reborn; I empty my bowl every day after breakfast, no more bloating. No more long time sitting in the toilet feeling miserable!
Thanks! Doctor B
Great interview!

I always say "FIBER IS OUR FRIEND".....SO important! Thanks for this great interview!
Love listening to Dr. B! I always learn something new.
Great video ! Ty
We need a whole interview about bloating please.
Timely video. Fiber, I've found out, is very important. Constipation will bring you to the attention of lack of water and fiber. Need it!!!!
I love that picture behind the Dr.
I LOVE it when Dr. B "nerds out"!
love this channel.
I like the Bubbies sauerkraut, it’s easy to throw some on salads or into the blender when I make my salad dressings.
Love you guys!!’ The Prince of Poop!! Love it!!!😂😂😂😂
So so so knowledgeable- Dr. Will - you have changed my life for the better. Thank you! 😊
Apples contain small amounts of sugar alcohols which can have a laxative effect because they draw out water into the colon. It's not usually a problem unless you eat alot of them or you have bacterial dysbiosis/IBS.
The only non-whole grain I'll eat is white rice (long grain or basmati), occasionally. Mostly because white rice stores forever (it has no fat, which is in the rice bran) and it's much lower in arsenic. If you can get brown rice from California, that's also a decent choice.
I usually soak my beans for a few hours, and it really helps reduce gas and just made the beans softer to eat. This also works with wheat berries and barley.
Gas and bloating maybe fixed by switching to Organic legume. It helps a lot based on personal experience.
omy this is beathful love you guys i was in hositipal for 7 hours still full
Just preordered the book, locally! Just $3.00 difference can help a small business
Good topic!
Very nice health teacher!
@@nellyjulienne9840 Ad is not allowed. But I agree with you. Thank you for your nice comment!
Excellent informative video. Will be following you both from Armagh in Northern Ireland...
Apples are also extremely high in pectin. I wonder if that helps? For me, cucumber and water melon or cooked veggies work everytime
Love the book!
Great information. Have started a plant based diet for my husband and I and are loving it. 2 weeks in and we are still having lots of gassiness. My husband has terrible osteoarthritis and would love to also know more about the healing with turmeric, have tried and has not helped him. Thanks
I think it could take 6 mos or so. My “severe” knee arthritis is basically gone after 5 yrs on WFPB diet. My knee still bothers me a little when weather moves in. My mom is on vegetarian diet and she never complains about hers anymore. I’d vote for patience. My experience is that diet helps the most, outside of joint replacement.
Might want to research something like boron and/or MSM
Just bought the book.
Thanks
Thank you Chuck, your message is clear, great and full of joy! Lena (from Belgium)
I buy unsalted black beans in can at local Winn Dixie, $.99/can!
Love these 2 guys!

Mr.Chuck & Dr.B. The website you gave about Zoe isn’t showing up when you use to look for it. Did I hear it right from you dr. B.?
Zoe about personalized nutrition
I like the apple idea but concerned about the sugar. I don't like consuming much sugar.
What about beans??
Then just eat the peel. 🙂🍎
Dr Bill, I need help. I have life long constipation. Nothing has helped. Changed to healthy eating and I think my colon is in shock. Help!
Great show, gentlemen! Keep it plant based! 👍🏼
Not disputing Dr. B at all...he seems brilliant.... there is just so much confusing information out there. There is Dr Natalie Campbell McBride claiming that some people stay on the carnivore diet for most of their life because of serious illness inflammation psychiatric disorders etc. Then there are vegans who claim to be very healthy with their vegan diet and on and on. It is extremely confusing and I would love to see a podcast addressing this issue with Dr B.
Claims and anecdotes are evidence only for the weak minded. Remember that.
How to reverse psoriasis through diet?
Thank you! 🙌🏻 Thank you! 🙌🏻 Thank you!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I love listening to this Dr. You explain things so us peons can understand, lol
Fiber is what the gut needs to create the right short chained amino acids for us to achieve the correct balance for our systems. It is not just a broom that cleans us out. That is the reason fiber supplements aren’t good. they help clean the system, but do not nourish like obtaining fiber from plant sources.
Plants do not nourish, and fiber is toxic. Meat nourishes.
My question is, how much of the plant food we eat becomes fiber and how much gets absorbed?
How much water do we need to drink daily and is it ok to drink tea and fruit-flavored water as part of your water intake daily?
Most days I don't need to drink any since I eat so much water, and on days that I drink water, almost never more than 1 liter. You should drink however much you feel like.
Getting your water from foods is better. Ripe fruits are best way to hydrate your body.
drink about half your body weight.
26:35 ohhh i gotta try this
Whats the best apple? Granny smith?
Thank you for share this ..I eat simple..Brocoli Sprout..My Homemade.and Fermented veggies my Homemade for healing..love to eat everyday include Turmeric Tea..is true is fight cancer..my husband heal by use Natural..I love this subject Thank you for host him 😊

Are carrots fibers when done as juice
"Pleasurable bowel movements" LOL, I love Dr. B
Do constipation or slow gut motility or idiopathic Gastroparesis cause Diabetes?
I do not eat any fiber and was constipated all my life...no more!
How are you now? Better?
How did you resolve it!!?!
I wonder if the microbes live on just on the skin of fruits and vegetables… will I get those beneficial microbes if I peel the fruits?
I have heard that sauerkraut in jars does not offer the advantages for the gut micro biome that fresh , home-made sauerkraut does . Is that correct? Thank you
If it's in a glass jar, and only cabbage and salt, it's perfectly good! 🙂🌱
@User yes, 4 months later, didn't expect anything scientifically credible against vegetables and fruits in our diet. it is uncomfortable that many are espousing the carnivore or vegan diet as an elixir . perhaps it is a benefit for some. l am certain balance is key for majority. our closest relatives monkeys, apes, eat vegetation as main diet. we are omnivores eating vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts, some meats and getting the benefits for our bodies and microbiome who feed on the fibers from veg and fruit. indeed countries with the longest longevity eat way more veg, fruit, legumes.
Over 100g a day without even trying. When you're eating all whole food plants it happens by default. Mind you I got over 60g a day as an omnivore so may just be my love of beans.
@@nellyjulienne9840 I know you're just an advertising bot but you can't cure herpes.
3:47 info begins..
This is confusing for me. I’ve been following Low Carb Down Under for a few years and they cite studies which show that fibre is not only unnecessary but causes constipation. They also recommended meat big time. Which doctors and diet recommendations are people meant to follow?
I like to shovel coal and shovel coal to get the train to get rolling down the tracks. Today was a real good day for the bowel movement, as is usual for whole food-plant based.
I have constipaiton. I have found solution for a long time but I couldn’t find solution yet. Could you please help?
This talk is very interesting and educational too. I eat lots of vegetables but I still have bowel problem
Maybe a food allergy or sensitive system.
Because fiber causes intestinal problems. See: Paul Mason.
@@aliendroneservices6621 lack of fiber does
@@gusgrizzel8397 False. See: "Dr. Paul Mason - 'From fibre to the microbiome: low carb gut health'"
@@aliendroneservices6621 Most low fiber diets are awful. I think the science is on my side.
Some people do better on more soluble than insoluble fiber

Call Elaine Ingham (Rodale Institute) and sync up on what pesticides and herbicides are doing to the Soil Food Webour food and plant quality; and how destructive it is that soils are tilled every crop cycle and releasing everything that is good from the soil. Virtually turning it into dirt.
I LIKE BROWN RICE AND APPLES
What the heck is fiber? Where do we find it?
I also have a question guys. Is popcorn good for you cooked with minimal healthy oil, no salt.
It is a whole grain, and have heard him say yes, it is is very healthy!
@@cherij7000 Thanks!!!💯
Plain air popped corn is excellent

Profit above health! Commercial farmers could farm organically but yields are far less.
Does jogging/walking help the stomach to "churn" up food and help in digestion. I cant find anything on the internet except "exercise before or after eating" which is not what Im interested in. It seems that nature would make use of gravity and biology to increase digestion ?
Lack of exercise is a known risk factor for constipation, so yes.
@@RiDankulous however, when someone is on a running program, esp. distance, they can develop something called runners trots which is caused by the jostling. it can go away though but a person probably should not eat really high fiber/fat/coffee before the long run. this was my experience.
For me only 40 g of oats cooked in water with one large ground apple . If I stop for 2 or 3 days I have to not miss this ritual. Blueberries or strawberries are not so good for me. Not sure why.
23:16 Dr B. - We DO know that chemical additives in any form (fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides) not only stress out the plants on which they are used, but they also kill all of the microbiology vitally important within a healthy soil food web. Our agricultural ways have managed to make deserts out of vast areas of land. It's all connected. Mono cropping and spraying oil-based fertilizers and other chemicals onto the crops take away from the plants ability to store, let alone supply the nutrients they naturally exude to the soil microbiome - plants feed the microbiota and in exchange gain the nutrients they need to grow. (a symbiotic relationship) Technically we should be leaving piles of biomass on the soil to re-build it. Without the microbiome, soil turns to dirt, devoid of life and susceptible to flooding, erosion, higher temperatures, etc. Suggest checking out these soil food web informational videos: czcams.com/video/uAMniWJm2vo/video.html
I understand that Turmeric is good, i had it about 10 days, after that i started to have so bad kidney pains, so be careful with it people, specially if you have kidney issues.
Does adding salt water to cabbage kill the bacteria in the cabbage?
Nope. It's what you would also do to ferment the cabbage (creating sauerkraut)
@@k.h.6991
I heard that some dangerous living organisms like tape warm is found in raw cabbage. Also will the salt water not harm the microbes because salt is used as presevative / delay the decay.
