I recommend grinding the surface of the battery a little bit, as the coating seems to be problematic when soldering (as this is a safety issue, you should triple check the connection).

This mod is very questionable because of the unknown outcome. There is no proof of the drone flying with the 18650 battery. The author did not demonstrate the drone in action after performing this modification. I gave this a try to find out that the drone becomes unbalanced and drifting backwards after a take-off. But the main problem is that most 18650 batteries are rated from 1C to 10C which makes the voltage dropping to the non-fly level in a couple of seconds. The original Li-Po battery is rated 25C. My verdict: do not bother.

I agree, it's one thing to show that something is possible but another to prove that it is useful at all. Hopefully someone can show that is works before a small fleet of drones are downed by overweight and undervolting batteries.

Tobechukwu Njoku the 900mah battery lasts 10 minutes (allegedly), that’s 4.6A draw at 85% usage. You could use a NCR18650GA 3450mah, it can provide continuous close to 10A, about 3C. If you’re lucky maybe you could even run 2S.

Hello Nerdville, thanks for the great video!! One suggestion, it would be nice to see a mod like this but with replaceable 18650 instead of soldered in the new case. This way, you would need only one 3D printed case and no need to include the charging circuitry in it. At least that would be perfect for me, as I have lots of 18650 and chargers. Thank you!

Your videos helped me pull the trigger on this particular unit (with the intent of adding an 18650).
Given what you saw as you were poking around its guts, do you figure a guy could hot glue a single 18650 holder on and solder the pigtail to the power input ?
For those of us without access to a printer, it would provide a detachable, high capacity battery and would be charged externally so you're not carrying the weight of the charger board.

  • @book1302
    @book1302 Před 6 lety +1

excellent video, I suggest to make it dustproof in the socket you made to see the red LED I'd suggest to add glue and push it in so it'll give a looking of a diming red LED and it'll seal it up avoiding dust gets into the case.
I really love the design you made, its so cool.
I have a yi camera and I want to replace the default battery adding something smaller size than 18650 battery, I saw a external battery that replaces the original battery and cover using 2400mh but I was thinking to get mine and add it idk of is it possible to do it, btw thank you so much for doing this video. could you add another 18650 battery to your design would you affect to circuit board? or would you add something else to make it safer if you have 2 x 18650? thank you so much

To save having to make the battery case and cut the Visuo, what do you think about mounting an 18650 in a simple battery ‘clip’ style holder on the bottom of the fuselage. Then wire thee battery terminals to the back of the terminal block inside the Visuo (on the internal side of the pins). My concern is the lack of a T connection. Is it needed? If so is there a small board out there that could be used to avoid destroying one of the batteries that came with the Visuo.
The advantage would be ease of battery removal and charging - no need to fabricate battery packs. The 18650 batteries and a charger are very cheap on eBay.
Also, adjustment of the battery holder to maintain the same centre of gravity should be possible.
    What do you think?
    Best wishes.

  • @danielwilliambr
    @danielwilliambr Před 6 lety +1

[English] I made the necessary modifications on mine, but instead of putting the battery internally I took the contact wires from the battery plate out.
First I tested just by attaching the tips with electrical tape, but the drone turns on the engines normally, but when it takes off it accelerates the motors and cuts them then, not accepting to take off again.
I refixed using some object in the tips of the wires to improve the contact, even result. I solved the wires in the battery, nothing new. My last test was to solder the original battery at the ends of the wires and secure it outside and then the drone worked normally.
Could it be the battery? In the multimeter it accuses to be with 4.14 V, also the original battery.

Wow, great mod and super video. I just printed it on my MK2S but I did not get such a nice bridge for the led charging status of the TP4056 there was a loose strand :-( I obviously have a little tuning to do. Please could you let us know what 18650 battery you are using. I await my drone and charger parts :-) I was watching a review by Tigger's RC Reviews where he was working out which could fly an action cam (I liked the Firefly Q6 which is 4k) and the XS809HW was one of the better ones for carrying extra weight. I would was interested in a comment that I think you made about the 18650 having more power for it's weight compared to the standard battery, it would be interesting to know why. Also please could you let us know how long it flys for on the 18650 vs the standard battery?

All you have to do is wire 3 of the drones regular batteries together and cut open the battery slot.slide your modded battery in, POKE HOLES in the piece you cut off and attach it back onto the drone battery slot with zip ties make it nice and tight on the battery so it cant slide out during flight and then cut off the ends of the zip ties.

great mod, However very costly if you don't own a 3D Printer. If you sold the battery enclosure that would be great.

It gets more unstable with a heavier load and could strain the motor further

I'm not having such luck, could be the old 18650's I used where a bit bad, never really tested them.
drone only flies for a few seconds before the lights starts blinking and then shuts down it's engines shortly after.
(time greatly depends on the throttle it's using)
but will fly again after turning it (and the controller) off and on again.
I was thinking maybe internal resistance of the battery maybe, or something else making it drop voltage under load.
the voltage is around 4.1->4.2 when I start and is still somewhere above 4.0 when I take out the battery after it's shut down, but is slowly climbing back, so I guess the voltage drops off to much while in use or something? internal resistance?)
Looking at a data sheet for Samsung ICR18650
seem the max discharge rate for these are 4400mA, while the recommended LG HG2's have 20 000mA.
so I guess I should find and use some batteries with a higher C rating.
(BTW, used a transparent filament for the battery holders, pretty neat as the light for charging is very easy to see)

My batteries was the problem, they had a pretty good 2000 mAh capacity but a very low C rating since they where meant for laptops that didn't draw to much power at once.
to test capasity of 18650s I bought a OPUS BT-C3100 - since it's a pretty neat charger and tester for capacity. www.aliexpress.com/item/Original-OPUS-BT-C3100-V2-2-Smart-Digital-Intelligent-4-LCD-Slots-Universal-Battery-Charger-for/32847522702.html
then since I've been working on a bigger drone and need some good batteries I've bought quite a few LG HG2 as they have a pretty high C rating and a very good 3000mAh capacity. www.aliexpress.com/item/4pcs-lot-LiitoKala-HG2-18650-18650-3000mah-electronic-cigarette-Rechargeable-batteries-power-high-discharge-30A-large/32809175063.html
they're not that cheap but they're very good, at least the ones I've received and tested.

ye my batteries had a low C rating so I've bought some 3000mAh LG HG2 batteries, so now it seems to work perfectly in terms of power delivery.

Hello I just did the battery mod without the extra charging module. I just connected the battery on the same points where the old battery was connected. First it didn't work, so I bypassed the box between the mini usb an the battery soldering points and finally it works BUT only for a few seconds something like 10s, and the LEDs are flashing like when the battery is getting low, but the voltmeter shows 4.1V, has anyone any idea what happens?

Same issue, connected directly to fc, lights flash, binds, then props spin a quarter turn. Used the module, soldering to the correct + -, lights flash, binds, and get a quarter turn on props. Tried 5 batteries 4.1v to 4.15v. No go.

Just a thought. I know little about this but it may help.
If you bypassed the card electronics could it be the unconnected 3rd pin T (temp) that’s causing the problem? Leading the drone to believe there’s a battery problem and shutting down?
