There is a great soundbite at the end of this footage! There were wrecks all over the place on and around I-65 & The Bluegrass Park Way in Southern and Central, KY. Traffic was back up for miles in some cases with long waits. Great video of tractor Trailer and Car wrecks all over and traffic back ups with people standing outside their cars. Police, Fire and wrecks.

If you drive a pick up and it's only 2wd and it snows a lot in your area frequently, add weight to the bed, get proper winter tires with studs (if your state allows it) and have chains in case of really bad snow. And as a bonus have a first aid kit, extra clothes and blankets plus non-perishable food items. And perhaps consider a Jerry can with some gas.
If someone has a 2wd pickup in an area that regulaly gets snow, they are either not too bright or can not afford to get all the other stuff they need...
Front wheel drive cars are better than rear w d. Imo. Ive never had 4 w d nor have I ever needed chains or studs. I grew up n live in MI. This is less than our normal by far. There are driving tips everyone should learn for icy roads. Some great tips here btw. Always keep hand warmers, full tank of gas, snacks n water, phone charged, boots, coats, hats, mittens, scarves. Several blankets or below zero sleeping bags. Wool doesnt retain water. Large candles, flashlight, flares, 1 lg can of crisco with a taper candle in the center will burn 4 several days. Put it into non flammable can. Dont sit inside a running car without opening a window at least an inch.
We do and we buy are dirt for next spring for a garden and we use it for the back of the truck 🇺🇸
Bendigo if you know how to drive properly for conditions it doesn't matter if it's 2 wd or 4wd LOL
Posi track some 2wd had other than limited slip 2wd with only one tire traction, the all wheel drive great for the ladies and almost every truck 4x4
If you know the roads are dangerous, STAY HOME!
They never seem to get the memo
Most of these people are enslaved. They're not allowed to make that decision. Their boss says "get your ass in the office or you're fired" and they obey because it's that or be homeless/dead

I have family that moved from Great Lake area N.Y to Kentucky to escape winter. We normally have feet of snow by now and my yard is bare at the moment. If you don't have snow tires , don't bother risking it.
When it’s this bad be wise stay home and be proud of yourself for staying put and riding it out. Even all wheel drive gets stuck behind the Under equipped driver’s 😎
That's all fine and dandy until the boss fires their employee .
Here in WV glad I got a 4x4, got about 8 inches in Beckley WV today.
It took my brother 3 hours to get home from work. 2 of the major highways were shut down due to massive car wrecks. I know there was 30 cars involved in one including several semi's
Yea', stay home', unless you like sitting and waiting for hours ....... in the freezing cold' 😉

1:40 Welcome to Bucksnort, Ky! Now know as Sonora!! Whoop Whoop!!!
Drive safe! There seems to the same amount of snow in Kentucky as it is in southeastern Norway or even slightly more.
Kentuckians don't get snow very often. It's a circus when they do.
@@andyharman3022 it’s a circus whenever Oslo gets snow despite the average annual snowfall there being like 170+ inches or 300+ cm
Last winter when we had the snow and freeze here in San Antonio, my Chevy suburban was sliding all over the place it was so scary I was literally crying
I hear you...
You just need to go a lot slower. Never use your brakes n steer into what ever way your rear end slides. I posted a few driving tips above, from a Michigan native. Also, dont spin your tires, you'll only go in circles n off the road. Slow n steady is key. We actually do that for fun here in MI. Where theres no traffic, spinning circles intentionally is fun if you know how to stop. Lol we call that doing ditties.
I can handle any vehicle in the snow and ice. Never an accident. I taught all 4 of my children to drive in it. My oldest son drives a semi and has for 30 years now. Never an accident. I taught mine when they were young. Don’t ever panic. Have someone take you out and teach you. It’s not really that hard.I’ve been driving in it for 50 years now. I took my children out with beginners license and made them put it in to a spin. Then I told them, now get it out. They did.
And never slam on the brakes. It is never a good idea in icy conditions
@@pennylaur7687 it was a 135 year subarctic ice storm that covered the entire state down into Mexico. I doubt it'll happen like that again even for their great great grandchildren. In all fairness, you guys can't drive in a hurricane either.
Why do drivers go out knowing they may run into trouble and take that chance?
Some have to, for their job.
Others just like the thrill of driving in bad weather and being able to say "I drove in bad weather and made it to my destination." "It was a challenge to me to drive on icy roads and I accepted it."
Those people are beyond nuts.
The bulk of it hit midmorning when people were already at work.
Drivers feel like “there’s not much so I can drive like normal.” This kind of thinking put other peoples lives in danger & their own!!! Slow down & stop rushing to your own grave!!!
Driving on snow is like skiing, driving on ice is like skiing on ice, except with dull edges.
I like it, good one.
Please stay home 🏡 if it’s not an emergency 🚨
Yikes! Treacherous weather!!!
Can’t wait to broadcast this
Winter Storm is welcome
people that end up in the ditch are the ones who say: I don't need snow tires"
Some people even if they had everything they need, 4X drive, studded tires, snow knowledge, and the best of luck, would get stuck behind an unexperienced driver, that slides all over the road, puts their brakes on at the slightest waver, and creates most of the minor wrecks, slideoffs, and slow motion actions.

Mueve to Miami
Would love to know what percentage of those wrecked cars are members of the summer tire club.
I have a Subaru with all-weather tires. When trucks are sliding off the interstate, I get off the interstate. Then I find a place to hole up until salt trucks have been out and about, or I take surface roads that the trucks largely avoid.
Deep snow tends to be safer for driving than ice is.
Big trucks need chains on small trucks need weight in the back is the back simple
Yes, weight on the tires that drive your car/truck. I like front wheel drive because the motor weight is on the front tires.
Yes, very bad in Kentucky yesterday. Had a 51 car pileup in central Kentucky.
what's ironic is all the congestion is dramatically dropping highway fatalities
No, not ironic at all. Are you serious? Higher speeds directly relate to fatal accidents. If congestion means lower speeds... it's natural that there would be less fatalities. So.... not ironic. Not even close to even sniffing irony. But nice try at trying to make a pithy comment. I guess.
At what price? Reminds me of the gun 'control' movement.

first the tornadoes, flooding, snow, freezing temps, and people still don't have food, clothing and shelter, PRAYING for y'all
watching southerners drive in snow is like watching northerners deal with a heat wave....
or a hurricane.
Is there any laws regarding winter tires or depth of the tread in America?
No, and in places like this (southern Kentucky), they haven't historically had to worry about it, which is why nobody has snow tires.
For passenger cars legal tread depth minimum is 3/32”. Trucks is 5/32”. Snow like this doesn’t happen often in Kentucky so we don’t normally have snow tires mounted and ready like in northern climes. It would still behoove one to have “M+S” rated tires -especially on the drive tires. I had a Nissan Maxima with great tires on the front and it would negotiate ice and snow effortlessly.
Do people in Kentucky have a weather segment on their local news?
Just asking for a friend.
Snow weather is a pop up there....it's not predictable like it is where you live, bud.
Yes they do like the rest of the country.
That's what we call a legitimate snowstorm
Is this for broadcast?
"So, 'Me R,' how long did it take you to come up with that quip, that lame quip?"
Drive safely -- on no less than half a tank of gas -- and 'good luck' to all maneuvering and stranded on the Bluegrass State's roadways. So BEAUTIFUL in springtime, remember. With these driving conditions resulting in driving disasters, the old saying 'misery loves company' certainly applies.

The weather in the US is not been normal. I am in Northeast Ohio which is on the shores of Lake Erie and in the snowmelt but we've hardly had any snow so far this year. We are getting some now, about an inch so far this morning, but prior to this we have had only one or two small snowfalls in the past two months!
Yo that Nicktoons jacket is pretty fire though! @1:10
So why was traffic all backed up? I couldn't see anything... 🤷♀️
Good question...hmm
Probably somebody going up a hill got stuck and couldn't go any further. Then traffic got stuck behind them.
Ask the lady who got out of the car. She was looking at something… by the way the guy in the orange sweatshirt wouldn’t be able to answer your question- he doesn’t know why they are backed up. 🙃
Man I feel bad for the people of KY right now
How can I add weight to my car just to keep it from sliding
Take your mother in law with you. That's what I do.
Use sand bags. You hit some one and the concrete block will kill you.
@@joemama9098 Sand bags are always a good idea. If you happen to get stuck you can throw the sand under the tires for traction.

Everybody on here giving their "expertise"...I'm from this area of Kentucky, and a dispatcher for police. We don't normally get this much snow, especially during the daytime peak traffic hours. And for a first snow of the season, this was way more than the 2-4 inches max we anticipated and the dusting we figured we'd get. Also, there's shortstaffing on state highway crews, so roads weren't salted or plowed as much as they should have been; to top that off, the temp dropped too low for salting to be effective so highway crews basically said F it and quit working at 1800. And in our area at least, a lot of the people that were slide offs or wrecks were not from this area, they were driving through on the interstate going too fast. Two of our troopers were rear-ended from people driving too fast for conditions and not paying attention to their surroundings.
surreal
Welcome to snow in the South🤷♂️
Same thing happens in Flagstaff when the tourists arrive after the first snow on The Peaks. They can't seem to understand that the Grand Canyon gets some snow too. Without chains, fuggedaboutit if you decide to brave that madness.
Sorry for everyone in these accidents but. Im in Michigan n promise you everyone here is watching this saying, here hold my beer and watch this!!!
Michigan is much flatter and has better equipment to clear the roads Same here in Indiana. Kentucky hills and less experience equals stay home. I know I don't want to share the roads down there when it snows and I like to slide sideways as far as I can for fun in Indiana.
Tired of all the folks from Michigan yammering on about how they handle snow. No shit. This is a rare snow in the south...happens about every 10 years, MAYBE. You can't handle a hurricane. My wife is from Flint Michigan and lives in Texas now for 30 years and still drives into a hurricane like a complete idiot. Had to save her arse twice.
@@KB-ke3fi exactly why I wont move to a hurricane prone state. Or one that floods. I also wont live in CA because I dont want to deal with fires n earthquakes. Im well aware, I cant fly, swim, rock climb, windsurf, and I am not fire safe. I can always put warmer clothes on or stay inside n hibernate for a week if need be. Drive slow n be safe in the snowy weather. Best wishes.

Probably because 4 wheel drives are expensive!
Got a text from Bob Broadcast. He's from the area. Says he's never seen anything like this.
When it's freezing and no snow or ice people stay home, but once it's starts to ice/snow let's hit the roads.
>what are snow chains
Oh my, you must be young. Look it up. Not every state is it legal. We used to use them then went with the studded tires. They have outlawed them. We just drive on it. I’m not afraid so I have never panicked. That’s the key to it. Good luck.
@@misshazel271 Why would they outlaw something that worked? That's stupid.
The city said that it was tearing the streets up. My dad always had the studded tires in winter only. We don't get much snow now but we used to and blizzards. Look up the blizzard of 1978 in Indiana. We had another one in 79.
** NOT FOR BROADCAST **
Snow tires are ALWAYS such a waste of money !! Above all with invincible 4W/AWD.
Love how the person filming this is driving way too fast
I can tell him why its so messed up....another state with bare bone road crews
Snow and American drivers, two things never match.
So you have a lot of experience with that or are you just talking shit?
Be smart and go slow. It sure beats paying for a tow out of a ditch.

I had some idiot pull in front of my semi and cut me off, causing a chain reaction accident in this storm. Was literally 1 exit away from the place I was getting off to get out of the snow.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy, Save and Preserve the peoples of the USA! Amen.
One of the problems; some pickup drivers, who think thy can blow through everything.............NOT. And don't get out of your cars to check damage, your car is your fortress in these situations.
They get an inch or two down south and everything grinds to halt.. lol .. people suck at bad weather driving.

Its just winter. I grew up n live in Michigan, this is nothing. If people just slow down, do not slam on the brakes n learn to turn Into a slide, ( steer in the direction your tail tries to go) this wouldnt be happening.
👍
Exactly. I’ve been driving in it for over 50 years now. I taught all 4 of my children to drive in it. I took them to a big lot that was mostly empty. Told them to get it in to a spin and then I told them to get it out. They did.
It hardly ever snows in Kentucky or most parts of the south...but you folks in Michigan can't drive in a hurricane either. It's funny how you yanks laugh at the south when it snows and people are on the roads, then I watch the videos up in New Jersey and Michigan and New Jersey and Chicago, and they're piling up 150 plus cars all over the highways for the same reason, and nobody calls them out on driving like idiots at 75 MPH on ice.
@@KB-ke3fi no one is laughing at anyone, stop the butthurt. We try to give ppl some insight on how to handle it a little better because we have the experience. There are dumbasses everywhere. Folks in southern Kentucky aren't used to driving in winter weather.
People, purchase a pick up with 4wd if living in a all 4 season state. Also, if not snow tires, make sure you get tires that are great in all weather conditions! If you’re paying $250 for all 4 brand new tires, they’re no good.
Don't buy all-season tires and expect to drive in the snow. Get real snow tires. And 4wd is not as good as people think. You can accelerate better than 2wd vehicles, but can't stop or turn any better. Therefore you just get in trouble more quickly. Be humble when you're driving in winter conditions. There's an ice patch out there with your name on it.
Labor shortage is a lot of cause of this in ky cannot find school bus drivers either.

traction is better when using the engines lower range
I think you lose traction in low range. Am l wrong. On ice if I'm going down hill I take it out of gear and use the brake to go or stop. That way the engine won't pull me with the idle.

Get rental equipment. Got to remember they are state employees.
They're understaffed so they didn't pass through as many times as they should have on the roads. And when the temp drops too low, salting and sanding isn't ass effective. They called it quits at 1800.

Seriously, do these states have plows? You will see tons of plows in Iowa out during these conditions. It is a state failure for this to happen
Many Southern States don't have plows because they rarely ever get snow!
Um, why? So the plow can sit in a barn unused for the next 20 years? Thank God you're not a city budget manager.
@@KB-ke3fi If you were replying to my comment, I believe you have misunderstood me. I stated that I know that many Southern States DO NOT HAVE SNOW PLOWS - If a state has no plows, how can they leave them sitting in a barn?! My cousin lives in Tennessee and has told me that when they get snow or ice, the region shuts down - the city they live in does not have snow plows or snow removal equipment. I don't appreciate being told that I would be incompetent as a city budget manager! Coming from the snow belt as I do, I realize the need for snow removal equipment especially as the Earth's Poles have shifted and continue to shift, changing weather patterns all over the World! KY State highway crew is understaffed in our area. They have the plows, but no one to drive them. Also when the temp drops as low as it did, salting isn't as effective. They called it quits at 1800, and most of the road crew staff had pulled at least a 24 shift by that point.

The bulk of it hit midmorning when people were already at work. And in our area most of the slide offs and wrecks were out of towners passing through on the interstates and parkways.
Two wheel drive pick up ........just a big pendulum with no grip
The guy at 2:45 knew what he was talking about. Don't they have weather forecasts in this area? Why do people venture out in this? Maybe some got caught up in it by surprise, but basically people should stay off the roads no matter what when this sort of weather hits. I like the ones who abandon their cars with the 4-ways on. They'll come back to a dead battery as well as a hopelessly stuck car.
Usually a surprise, yes. It's unpredictable in the southern states. It just can show up out of nowhere when the last one was 15 years ago, maybe.
