      @@Pineapple-co6fe Few games can take advantage of it to be honest, Better to go single cpu socket, faster ram speeds higher bandwidth improved buses across the board with a new CPU socket and chipset. If you said you do occasional rendering or data intensive analytics then the server board would be a good added option to a computing space. These days a Ryzen 5 mid range mainboard 150-200 bucks with a recent GPU last 3 years you'll kill this server setup in game performance by double digits. Support AMD only way to force Intel to get their act together, It's not just about Intels performance it's the business practices that need to evolve.

      Threadripper is still cheaper (for example even like 2 years ago or more you could get TR-1950x with 16c/32t for $499 new, and of course the motherboards weren’t too bad, and mine even with a wimpy 120mm AIO (that I paid $24 for) I was able to get 4.15-4.2 GHz all core on mine).
      I’m not sure what the thrill of getting overpriced obsolete hardware with no upgrade path is, because it’s still overpriced even when it’s this discounted (it’s like a million dollar cookie on sale for $100, it’s still a ripoff...)

Ex: For a mint in sealed box Fire-GL V8650, the most powerful Terra-scale card made as well as the first 2 GB card thanks to 32 chips of GDDR4 coating the front and back, was $40 for me. Excellent price on retro stuff if you wanted to play with it (but not these crappy Xeons, there are other great Xeons for that, I'd probably do quad socket as that seems more fun, just like my quad crossfire on my main machine). I've got older stuff up to my Titan Xp Star Wars edition. I love tech new and old, and benching them to new records is to me more fun than gaming (I got an excellent deal on a phase cooler and I use it a lot! Especially since its way cheaper than LN2, because LN2 prices are extremely over-priced where I'm at, but thankfully Dry Ice is pretty cheap for testing).
      I just don't see these Xeons as any value, too expensive to play with, and its value sucks, and its not retro... It doesn't meet any requirements I can see.

    What will be great is when Amazon, or any other company really, finally goes to Epic new gen and dumps all of the processors and boxes onto the web, maybe even ddr4 if ddr5 is out by then.

      @@mehmeh1999 ARM Alternatives need to rewrite your whole software stack, instead of just validating hardware and making some optimizations. ASICS or FPGAs are pretty limited if you expect to run anything besides one narrow workflow ever, while x86 can run a huge variety of stuff.
      While in the five to ten year timeframe Risc-V and specialized accelerators will take over some workloads and applications, I suspect we'll see more Epyc adoption before those alternatives are able to take their foothold.

      @@daniellewis1789 depends on your stack. We run a lot of Java, a lot of lambda, you can run Redis, mariadb, all sorts of fairly standard software.
      The biggest problem is performance, especially for something like a centralised db host, but that's about to change.

    ~4 years ago I built a workstation system with dual E5-2686v3 18 core chips, also Amazon chips. Did a turbo mod to make it run 3ghz all core. Anyway, bought the CPU's for 350 each. Great content as always Wendell!

    I bought a DL350P off eBay for £120 including delivery. Those suckers can take up to ~768GB and can fit the E5-2670 v2 in dual config for 20 cores and 40 threads :3
    If you're willing to rinse your electricity bill you can go even higher on the platform.

    All else being the same, I would probably be running Threadripper if I built today, but I’m still happily humming along with a pair of E5-2667v2’s and 128GB of dirt cheap ECC DDR3 RAM. All inside a sub-20L case I can fit inside my carry-on!

      Coming in to let you know you can get a 20-core Xeon Gold for about a hundo now on eBay. Motherboards still pricey of course, but the processors are cheap.

      @@TheAnoniemo With these CPUs being fairly undocumented they tend to be priced lower on the used market which means they can be a bargain for a time until word gets out. Motherboard support seems ok as they tend to use the same platforms as their siblings. The E5-2678V3 I mentioned above has a DDR3 controller in addition to the DDR4 controller unlike the on-map E5-2680V3 which is DDR4 only, because Facebook was afraid of DDR4 shortages at the time.

    For any home users, look into engineering samples if you want a nice Intel scalable CPU for cheap. Don't use a Skylake scalable ES, as they're limited to ~1.8Ghz (iirc) and also have virtualization issues. But the Cascade Lake ES chips are still super cheap and have zero virtualization issues. The Skylake ES chips are suitable for a workstation rig though, and you can get a 20 core 40 thread Gold 6138 for only about £120. Or alternatively you can grab a 12 core 6136 for about £60. This means you could grab a 40 core system for

      If you can afford the whole platform, board, RAM etc then yes its a great buy them but if you are in budget Xeons V3 still rock the price/performance. If DDR3 ECC RAM is good enough for your work then you can save a ton of money.

    hmmm... something to consider is you can get a workstation chassis with an 8 core for about $500. now i just need the decoder ring to see if these 1 offs are compatible with e5-2630 v3. i think i can use v4 after a bios update.

    I use my HPE DL380 Gen 9 as a desktop, though it does server tasks with Windows Server. I don’t think its as loud as one might think. When I use it for my regular tasks such as MS Office, Web activity or AutoCAD it is about as noisy as the AC in the window of that room. When I use it for something intense such as gaming(@HD60) it is about as noisy as my vacuum cleaner. I feel like I need to be concerned with hardware compatibility(there are no molex or SATA power dongles), especially physical size. In my opinion it is the heat that I need to be most careful about because it just sits on a shelf, not in a rack with dedicated cooling. That is one of the reasons I installed an Nvidia P4000. That GPU is very cool, and its on the compatibility list of both HPE and AutoDesk.

    Just priced out a system with one of these, ASRock EPC621D8A, SuperMicro CSE-825TQ-563LPB, 32GB Crucial ECC DDR4 and 8 x 1TB WD Blue SSD's and it came out to less than $2500.00...

    Asus have some nice dual 3647 workstation boards that supports normal ATX power supply. Maybe you can benchmark workstation/gaming on those used 3647 Xeon on one of those boards?

    These chips are being sold as QS (aka samples) so I assume there may be a risk with this. Personally I managed to pick up a dual EPYC setup with 64 cores (128 thread) for much much less than this setup, so I find the Intel Platinum hard to justify. Is there a specific reason you went for this over EPYC?

    I might be remembering that wrong, but for that socket, you stick the CPU to the heatsink via bracket first, and then install it into the socket, not the traditional way.

      that is technically correct. however I've done it so many times, this is how I do it. The other way is faster to do once you're used to it but I prefer this way because I can wiggle the cpu in the socket a bit to make sure its sitting in there properly.

    a year later nearly to the day and I'm buying used workstation threadripper parts . got a whole 1900x,cooler ,mobo rig minus ram and storage for 420$CAD. I have 32 gb board on another I can split and 128gb drive on the shelf . who needs a case? who needs to use 4 memory channels ? those are premium features.

    hey if I want to build a machine learning machine, and in the market for high core count and high base-clock speed 1u server to get would be? I would ideally want to be running physics simulations at 1000x realtime and also train a neural network alongside the simulation!

    Well , now, 3 years later , 18 cores dont sound like that much anymore , but old Xenos still have a usecase , i just bought an 2680v4 ( Socket 2011v3 ) 14 Core with 128 GB DDR4 2133 Ecc reg RAM and a china X99 /C612 ATX Mobo for ~ 230 Dollar all together as a Kit on Aliexpress because i wanted the 40 3.0 PCie Lanes and the RAM for my TrueNAS NAS . ECC works , Bifurcation works , i have now a 4 x 4 TB NVME Z1 in my NAS . The 2680v4 had a price of 1900 Dollar in 2016 and is sold for ~ 20 - 25 Dollar now

      a 3950x is limited by the amount of ram you can use, Dual Socket Servers with tons of cores/threads are generally used for Virtual Machines or containers, so that they can perform the tasks of many different machines. Another user made a comment about Threadripper and overclocking it, which is more relevant. I am not saying you could not build a 3950x server because you absolutely could so long as it RAM limit (and PCIe lane limit) will not hinder your plans for the server. The 3950x supports up to 128GB ram, which might sound like a lot but its really not, if you gave each vm only 8GB you would be able to support 16 VMs, and if you gave each vm 16gb then you can support only 8 VMs

      SoloSaga 3950x has pcie 4 and the xeon has pcie 3. So bandwidth of the xeon is half of 3950x. So it dosent matter if xeon has double the lanes, the pcie 4 makes up for it.

      Very True, but there is also the maximum memory to consider, for anyone else trying to make the comparison here is the detailed difference: ryzen 3950x (128gb 4x32gb) 24 PCIe 4.0 lanes, threadripper 1950x/2950x (256gb 8x32gb) 64 PCIe 3.0 lanes, xeon platinum 8124m (768gb 24x32gb) 48 PCIe 3.0 lanes. Also you can technically get 64gb dimms for the xeon platinum, doubling your RAM capacity but it triples the ram cost. The new Threadripper 3970x (256gb 8x32gb) 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes, looks good but still cannot handle anywhere near as much ram as wendels xeon platinum 8124m system, and when you consider a 3970x is $2k each then for $500 each for the 8124m you can start to see the value in his decision, that xeon system will absolutely use a lot more electricity over time than a Threadripper 3970x would so that would also be something to consider. Assuming you didnt need the additional ram that the xeon 8124m provides then building a system with Threadripper 3970x would cost more initially but may eclipse the xeon after a few years in money saved from power usage(do your own homework on this please, the TDP supports my claim but there are other factors such as power cost in your area). xeon 8124m 480TDP (240 watt TDP x 2) versus Threadripper 3970x at 280 TDP, a single 3970x outperforms two xeon 8124m cpus in raw performance, and at roughly half the power consumption. More Ram means you can support more VMs, so if VMs/containers is what you are doing with your server then even though the xeon consumes more power you will actually save power because the system is able to support soooooo many more VMs, you really have to consider all factors and the most important question is what do you intend to do with the server. If you are supporting VMs or Containers then only xeon or EPYC really makes much sense because you will need lots of RAM.

    For database work integer thruput and single thread performance are the sole performance criteria. The 6256 can almost match the Ryzen 5950 even though it costs 8 times more.

      I’m not the hardware architecture/db expert and I am not saying you’re wrong. I am well above average at understanding data structures/algorithms, their tradeoffs, how to adapt them to new problems and their use case time/space/concurrency requirements. You could be a subject matter expert on hardware architecture/db’s and I probably only know enough to be dangerous.
      I assume you are speaking primarily about relational databases. There’s so many types of databases I highly doubt they all have same order of precedence with regard to CPU requirements. So I am not going to pretend that’s what you are saying.
      However, even for relational databases single thread integer operations doesn’t seem like it would be #1 priority. With joins, Cartesian products, and sub queries multithreaded operations seem like they would be prevalent. Memory/cache capacity as well as memory/cache latency/bandwidth would seem to be crucial when dealing with multiple large tables and index lookups. Furthermore handling multiple transactions at once and sharding would also seem to need concurrency, good memory bus and excellent networking capabilities.
      Like I said I’m not expert and would love to hear your thoughts. Relational db seem to often do independent repetitive tasks or have multiple large datasets that can mostly be manipulated in isolation with a thread handling small communication needed. By their nature and nature of servers memory management seems like a huge factor as well.
      If you consider in memory databases, web servers, graph dbs, message queues and cdns all may operate on one machine and their requirements. Single threaded integer operations seem even less important.
      Maybe the implementation of relational databases is geared more towards older/general purpose hardware. Also the nature of queries and their statistics may dictate it’s important. Furthermore stored procedures and tendency to exist alongside VMs and potential need of those VMs to perform calculations may influence implementation as well.
      I just don’t see how the core function/principles of relational databases is indicative of top priority being single threaded integer calculations. Maybe you can educate me. I really would like to learn

    I purchased one of the old FaceBook server boards with dual X5650s and 64 Gb of RAM. It was fun to play around with, but that server board was really finicky... definitely not like messing around with a mainstream desktop motherboard. This is a cool video--and definitely in your wheelhouse. Much better than ITX builds and such.

    I'm running dual 18 core CPUs (Intel Xeon E5-2696 v3) in my z10PE-D16 WS. The biggest difference being mine are rated 2.3GHz, thought they typically run 2.8 ~ 3.7GHz in real world operation. Still not worth the upgrade for me, but this is interesting...
    Future upgrade is still planned for a Threadripper 64 core... Mainly because running this platform has been a PITA with Windows 10. I get so many odd problems other people don't encounter, and the system is far more likely to get bricked from a Windows update. It's happened 4 times since I built the machine. Corrupted installs that could not even recover using the Windows recovery utility.

      At that price point you need a specific basic that decodes video.. an old GPU form amd or nvidia cuda/vulkan software support might help? 4k resolution at which codec?

      @@kitecattestecke2303 Usually I work with DNxHD intermediate files and encodes on handbrake using x264 an x265.
      GPU decoding helped a lot, but it's still not enough. Some plugins don't work well with it.

    That cannibalizes future earnings though. Amazon is now upgrading to a almost top tier processor for cheap and it must be really cheap in order to make sense and won't need to upgrade those servers for a few years. I don't even know how the math makes sense when the power consumption of a server costs you as much as the processor. It takes 6 top tier Intel CPUs to equal 2 Epycs and the Intel CPUs each cost 4 times as much as the Epycs combined. I Priced a $800k Intel server that matched a $115k AMD server. So how are they making up that difference when a company like Amazon needs 10s of thousands of servers? No amount of customization costs more than the hundreds of millions in savings. I think there is a time factor at play. By the time they rebuild their software stack they were betting Intel will catch up to AMD and they would be switching back again.

    What's the point 3970X is more powerful and could already be found for 1800$. If you calculate motherboard in, you get the same figure as 2x that 8124M + dual socket MB. And you get a new, more powerful CPU that if you run it 24/7 saves you another 500$ in a year in electricity bills.
