- I don't know about you, but I just love comfort food. Bangers and mashed is one of those classic British recipes that will touch your heart and soul. Made with a delicious combination of pork sausages, mashed potatoes, and a dark rich onion gravy, this dish is the ultimate classic comfort food. It can be made in about 30 minutes. Best yet, it's budget friendly. The dish will feed about 4 people and costs between 10 and 12 dollars.
NOTE: I have been having trouble with the website as of last night, so I have put the recipe below. Sorry for the inconvenience. It should be back up soon.
As always, watch the video, give it a try, and let us know what you think.

Ingredients:
2 potatoes, cubed
5 - 6 banger sausages
1 red onion, cut into slices (You can use the onion of your choice)
1 tbsp of butter
1 tbsp of olive oil
3 cloves of garlic, chopped
2 tbsp of milk
1 tsp of garlic powder
1/2 tsp of salt
1 tsp of pepper
1 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 cups of beef broth (I use a Knorr mix with water/beef cubes can also be used)
2 tbsp of all purpose flour
For the full printable recipe, visit: cooknshare.com/recipe/recipe/...
Method:
Boil the potatoes for 10 to 15 minutes until fork tender.
While the potatoes are boiling, add the butter and olive oil to a pan over medium high heat. Place the sausage in and fry for about 4 minutes on each side until browned.
Set them aside on a plate.
In the same pan, add the onions in and fry until soft and just about caramelized. Add in the garlic and saute until fragrant.
Add in the flour. Stir and cook for a minute or two.
Pour in half the broth and stir until combined.
Add in the remaining broth, bring to a boil, and stir until it thickens.
Put the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in. Stir once again.
Set aside for a few minutes.
Add the milk, butter, salt, pepper, and garlic powder to the potatoes. Mash until smooth and creamy. You can put more milk in if necessary.
Place the potatoes on a plate, put two of the bangers over the top, and spoon the onion gravy over.
Spoon some peas on the side, serve, and enjoy.

Such a delicious simple dessert week night meal. It's at least once a month in my house, My English husband loves it.
Hi Elizabeth. It really is. I love them too. Oh, your husband is from the UK. Hi to him.
@@TheCooknShare He's from Bath England. I don't cook all the pies they eat etc. I feed him the food we eat here even the lamb. When he goes home once a year then he can eat his food.
A great job with the snags and mashed spuds mate.
Hey there. Thanks Wally. Always enjoy mashed. Hope you are well my friend.
@@TheCooknShare Thanks mate. Maaate ya forgot the cheeeese. Struth, how will i survive?.

I love Cumberland sausages or pork and apple sausages. Yummy.
Oh yum. Hope you try this one and enjoy. Stay safe and well.
@@TheCooknShare You too :)
I love me mashed potatoes too! Now that looks comfort food for me, YUMMMM 😋😋😋👍♥️
Hey there. Yes, they are so good. It was comfort food indeed my friend. Hope you try it and enjoy. Stay well.
Thanks for the "Bangers" banging history but for me even a sausage would also direct the same way as that of these Bangers!! Bang bang!!
As a Brit I'd return sausages to the pan to poach for 5/10mns in the gravy before serving. Just gives the gravy that added sausage taste.
Good idea, actually.
Always wondered why they were called "bangers", now I know! Thanks, Dave.
Hi. You're so welcome. Hope you try it and enjoy. Let us know.
Oh my gosh Dave as usual your recipes always drive me crazy as I want to eat them. I am in the throes of packing to move to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape on 18 June & once there I will be buying bangers to make this yummy dish - Oh my gosh I can taste them 😍 Thank you for tormenting my taste buds
Hi Wendy. LOL. Well, I guess that's a good thing. Oh, you are moving. That's always a stressful but exciting time. Let us know about your new place. Yes, try the bangers. They are super good. Take care my friend.
@@TheCooknShare thank you Dave I will watch more when I’m settled in PE ❤️❤️
Thanks - I just made this and it came out great, didn't realize it was all that easy! The gravy got a little thick when I went back for round 2, but it was fine. It also wasn't as beefy as I had hoped, I forgot to add Worcesteshire Sauce and I used Better Than Boullion to make the broth, wasn't the best beef flavor but again, it worked out just fine, it was a lovely onion gravy nonetheless - thank you - will make again
Wonderful. Yes, it is easy. So glad you enjoyed. Thanks for the comment and keep cooking.
im aussie, that looks bloody good
Hey there. Yes, they were so good. How are things in Australia?
Thanks for the history..always wondered why they called them bangers!
Hi Ben. You're so welcome. I thought it was interesting too. Hope you try it and enjoy.
well done
Hi Mirch. Thanks so much. Hope you give it a try.
A must-try. The challenge is getting good bangers here in China. This should go well with beer.
Hi Charles. Oh Really. They don't have any sausage there. Actually, you favourite will work as they don't have to be bangers. Hope this helps. Yes, fantastic with beer.
This looks good. I was wondering if I missed a video then you popped up. I was thinking of going through your recipes to see what I could come up with. Pulled out a pound of hamburger maybe your Hamburger Helper one. My Son isn't here as usual so it will just be me. Have a good rest of your week.
Hey Becky. Glad I popped up. So you got the notification alright? Yes, the hamburger helper is so good. Sure hope you enjoy. Let me know. You have a super Friday and stay safe.
@@TheCooknShare well no I didn't get the notifications. I did make the Hamburger Helper but I think I will have to cut the Chilli powder I'm half or more. Whew I'm not a spice type person. I didn't have brown sugar either. I did put just a touch of white sugar in hoping to cut the spiciness down. It didn't help so I did add the tomato like you suggested. Not tried it yet cause I'm waiting on the cheese to melt. I think if I make it again I was thinking mushrooms. I would of added them now but I need a bigger pan. I've had this one so long and is always my go-to pan. I don't want non stick but its got to be bigger than what I have now.
Hmmm. That's funny. Is your bell checked off and stuff? Excellent the way you changed things around, Becky. Yes, mushrooms would be great too. Maybe time for a new pan, I guess. Sounds like you enjoyed it though. Take care my friend.
Well who knew where the term 'bangers' came from! 🤣🤣🤣 I had an entirely different reference in mind ALL these years! 😂😂😂🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪
Hi Sarah. That's what I understood and read time after time. I just find the history of recipes interesting.
I'm a huge fan! Would you ever consider making a cookbook?
Funny. I'm working one right now. It should be ready in a couple of months I hope.
@@TheCooknShare Woo-Hoo! I can't wait to get a copy.
Let you know for sure.
I think one of the main ingredients in a banger is “cereal” also. I picture it as a finely ground breadcrumb- like filler to fill out the banger with its water filler.
Nice recipe, looks delicious. Wondered why the sausage was called a banger.
Hey there. Thanks so much. It really was good. I loved the onion gravy. Hope you try it and enjoy.
Deeelicious!
Hi Laura. Thanks so much. It was so good. Hope you try it and enjoy.
Hi Dave, hope you are well. My husband Robert would have a fit. He is a butcher by trade and you pricking the sausages he would say that's to keep the flavour in. By the way if you making champ put your scallions in a drop of milk and let it simmer to soften the scallions. Then mix with your mashed potatoes. Proper Irish champ. Love Lyn xxxx Happy Easter.🐰🐰🐰
Hey Lyn. Yes, maybe. I just find they take a bit longer to cook. I love the champ too. Hope you have a super Easter and you are all well my friend.
I'm originally from the states. Left there for Australia almost 30 years ago. I'd never heard them called bangers until I moved here. My how things have changed. And that meal is on everyone's table here. (Btw, Aussies also call sausages "snags"). Happy Easter ✌️❤️
Hi Kathy. Oh really? I take it you are enjoying Australia. Man, I want to go someday. On my bucket list for sure. I can believe it's on the table there. It's so good. Love the term snags. You have a super Easter too my friend.
How did you manage to move to Australia? That's awesome! I'm from the state and my boyfriends family is British so he loves his bangers and mash and we have them often when he visits!
@@SmallSnailMarie I married an Aussie. I met him online (not at a dating site). We chatted for almost 2 years. He flew me out proposed. I accepted. Went back, sold everything, packed up what clothes I wanted to bring. Came back. Got married. Got my citizenship & poof, here it is 30 years later. I'm happier here than anywhere I ever lived in the states. This has felt like home from day 1. I wish you all the best with your long distance relationship.
@@kathynurks4379 aw that's such a wonderful story and than you for the well wishes! I'm so happy it was successful! ❤ Do you mind me asking how you guys met? I met my boyfriend online as well on a game, never intended to fall for him we weren't even really gaming buddies, I was friends with someone he was friends with but now 4 years later we're together 😊
@@SmallSnailMarie Back in the day, there were these sites called message boards. Like a precursor to MySpace or FB. Lots of topics people talked about on them. Someone would make a post about something or ask a question. Anybody could reply. His comment was real cheeky. It made lol for real. And he's kept me laughing ever since. We have good friends here that met on a gaming site that ended up married with kids. I know caution is necessary.....there's a lot of weirdos out there. But not all online people are bad. Friends & family in the states thought I was nuts to even come visit and even nuttier for moving here. Ain't live grand?!!!
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Yum.
Just made this for the first time, so good. Must be my ancestry.
It might be. Hope you try it and enjoy.
Use bistro gravy! Bovril is what us British drink before we go to bed! Other than that great recipe dave!
Thanks for the tip. It was super good. Hope you are well.
I lived in London for many year and has Bangers and mash with peas many times. Never seen Bangers in a store where did you get yours?
Hi Maggie. Yes, ultimate British comfort food. Loved London. Definitely going back some day. I just got them at a store called No Frills. Any sausage does well though. Hope you try them and enjoy.
A beautiful day starts with watching wonderful videos like this. I have enjoyed watching, thanks for sharing . a fellow creator,.,.,.,
Hi Yasin. Thanks so much. Keep making those videos my friend.
Add a glass of red and you can't go wrong. I like to add my salt to the water with the potatoes. Also to up the level I would cook 2/3 potatoes and either 1/3 carrot or pumpkin

You sais "carmelize" instead of the American pronunciation of "carmelize",,,,, magic!
Taste is very high on the richter scale✔️ 🍽️
Oh, yes. It was so good. Glad you enjoyed.
what meat sausage did you use?
I used a sausage called bangers, but you can use any kind you like.
Add a beer, now that's living !
Now you're talkin' Carole. Hope you are well.
I would be as happy as a fat cat , eating bangers and mash for breakfast , lunch and diiner thrown in with some salad and garlic bread .
Me too. It is so good. Love the idea of garlic bread.
Good. Personally I do not prick my Sausages just subject them to a low heat for a long time ever since my first-ish cooking session after which I asked my local shop keeper why my sausages were well done on the outside and not in the middle (I was young) and she told me to cook them slowly for a long time, so I have ever since. Never buy those cheap sausages you mentioned.
Hey James. Yes, you don't have to for sure. Good tips. Love the bangers too. Stay safe and well my friend.
Any advice how to make kids eat this food?
Now. that's a real challenge. LOL. Let me think on that.
I didn't know that the British had any recipes. 😂
Hi. Yes, they have many. LOL. Hope you try this one.
No garlic, not in a british dish
I would beg to differ on that one.
Great video but hardly classic, garlic isn't a traditional British ingredient.
