I like how the beginning of each level shows a scene with Sonic and Tails, yet the whole point of the game is that Tails is missing and you have to rescue him.
yeah. it always gave me the feeling of like "this is how it could've been" motivating me more to beat the game
not to mention that this game actually came out before the genesis version lmao
I suspect Tails was supposed to be playable but they couldn't get him to work properly.
@@enderslayer0848 it came from the Master System version, and it was just cropped and , because of that, the Game is very hard for a casual gamer : you dont see parts of thé screen (first fight with eggman, where you can fall from the deltaplane, it was very hard !)

The bosses of this game are just a NIGHTMARE, having to face all those monsters without any fucking ring is just insane. Anytime I was hearing the boss music starting to play I was shaking. It was the most difficult Sonic game I ever had.

It's really funny that Silver Sonic is the easiest boss in the game.
Also It was the most difficult Sonic I ever played. That fuckin crab and the first level was insane. This was the ONLY Sonic with zero rings Boss levels.
@@pato17rio Sonic 1 8-Bit also gave no rings for boss levels, but allowed a shield, an extra life and the bosses were far easier.
I owned this on game gear when it was new. All of the sounds trigger deep hidden memories. It was a lifetime ago

Don't mind me as I flashback to 1996, little 6 year old me clutching my gamegear tight, never making it past the first few levels.
To be honest, the fact that this game can apparently be beaten in 38 minutes is kind of a kick in the balls.

I never really made it through the first few levels either. The first time I have EVER played that game is when I was on vacation in Florida back in 2005-ish and I borrowed my cousin Sam’s Game Gear. She was male back then, but now she’s female.

To gain a continue in this game you either collect a Chaos Emerald or you need to have exactly 77 Rings at the end of a level without dying.

I beat this game when I was about 8 years old and looking back do I feel proud. Once you have learnt to beat the first boss, which I think took me a long time, and you master the flying in the second stage, the rest is not too hard.

Some of the emeralds are so ridiculously easy to miss, I have no idea how we discovered them back in the day.

OMG this takes me back! I remember the Game Gear and this game seemed soo high tech and awesome COLOR graphics! I used to go to bed and then wake up to go to the bathroom or whatever to find my dad playing this on my GG after I went to bed. :-) Good memories.

As a kid that kind of made the level more difficult to me due to the feeling of being in a "2nd zone" atmosphere. lol

In prototypes you were originally going to start at Green Hills. No clue why it changed.

Ah, this brings back memories...always using a wall adapter because the batteries would run out quickly... Didn't get far in the game, but the music & sound was remarkable.

I was about to say the same thing! I sucked at this game, of coarse i was like 8, but this game was hard AF. Actually think I never made it past the 3rd world, and rarely even got that far. I remember the first boss being super hard,coarse this dude just blazes thru.. Guess I'd prolly be better nowadays,but can't for the life of me remember what the f I did with my game gear.. Ahh.. To reminisce.. Lol
I had trouble with this boss as a kid and it took me several attempts before I finally beat it. The main problem is you don't have any rings on the third act, so just one mistake costs you a life. The first Sonic was like that too but the bosses weren't as hard. Luckily fixed that issue in Chaos and Triple Trouble.
Yooo don't think I ever did either!! Played it a ton as a kid and rarely ever got passed the first level. I think I got to the second level once and was shocked lol
This version of sonic 2 is much more harder then the sms version, since this version is zoomed in, note: once i fight the first boss, i could barely see those balls bouncing at me and they appear at rsndom patterns, even if i was practicing, i can't beat that boss, and robotnik will appear at a sudden moment soo fast that you got no time to think.
The sms version is still pretty damn hard, but the game gear version is undeniably even more brutal with the screen crunch.
The SMS version is easy as pie imo, but the translation to Game Gear felt lazy. Aspect should have redesigned some Zone layouts to work better with the smaller screen resolution (like Ancient did with Sonic 1 on Game Gear). Then again, "fixing" the Game Gear Zone layouts seems a bit silly of a project for me to undertake at the same time, since the SMS version exists.
@@bluestreakedladyshe-her8507 I thought Game Gear version was easier. The SMS version always tripped me up with those 4 eggs on the boss level of the Sky High Zone.
That’s why this game seriously deserves a remaster for iOS, Android, and PC, along with other Sonic Game Gear games. Hear me out.

God it's been a long time since I've played this. It was a solid Sonic experience. Very fun. I remember going to Toys R Us with my mom and dad l, and they surprised me with a Game Gear. My dad was a Sega fanboy, and I grew up with the Genesis, the Dreamcast, etc.
I remember my brother and me spending loooong afternoons to master this game until we finally beat all the levels, maybe a year after purchasing it xD Once you got passed the crab everything went smoother. Beautiful music, graphs... a very very entertaining game. Difficult but worthwhile!

owned this game when i was 8 years old, super challenging game for a kid, took me a few weeks to figure out how to beat the first boss, trapped at the scrambled zone forever and never knew there was a zone afterwards, thanks for the video, cheers for our childhood

What I never understood about this game was: on each Boss stage, there were NO Rings, and you could die just trying to GET to some the bosses. The BIGGEST PROBLEM with this game was: EACH CONTINUE USES A CHAOS EMERALD. So, if you Continue JUST ONCE, you will NEVER beat the game with all of the Emeralds. For a game this hard, you should have at least 5 Continues to start with.

This game was HARD AS NAILS!! Finding ALL THOSE EMERALDS!!! I don't know HOW I did it as a kid! I could not get a hang at those gliders! The jumping from springs to springs! I made it to the FINAL BOSS and got GAME OVER!

Grew up with this game. Beautiful music. Love the hang gliding. Love the aqua lake zone. One of the best games on sms2.

Uh, this was the original. You Can Do Anything was a remix to this song. Sonic CD was released a year after Sonic 2 for the Master System and Game Gear was released.
They should have made the Green Hill Zone the 1st zone while the Underground Zone the 4th zone. They screwed up by switching places making the game off to a bad start.

If this game had WAY more 1-ups that could be found, getting Continues were easier, you could earn a life for every 10,000 points, you had 9 lives to start and could earn as many as you wanted, you had 5 Continues to start, you had rings on the boss stages so you would be unlikely to die before REACHING the Boss of each stage, collecting all of the Chaos Emeralds actually did something in the game(yes, if you manage to get all of the Chaos Emeralds, YOU CANNOT TURN INTO SUPER SONIC in this game... which would have VERY HELPFUL), and using a Continue DIDN'T use a Chaos Emerald... this would be a really great game for the Game Gear. The stage gimmicks were very fun to try and get used to. This game would have greatly benefited from having the Spin Dash in it. It takes a lot of running to get up to speed, and that is a big problem in this game.

+breakingglass27, I feel ya man! I searched it up on Sonic Wiki and learned that you have to push buttons in all direction to keep it in the air, the first time I also didn't understand anything of it I was keep falling down and I got mad because of that

You have to repeat pushing backward, pressing front will fly down.
Use LEFT when the hang glider goes fast and repeat. Use RIGHT only in the wind sections of Sky High Act 2.
I'm lucky to have figured it out as a kid. It was kind of an accident lol, then I tried to replicate said accident, and then I learned.

The memories!!! Played this and actually beat it. Surprised people said this game was difficult. Thought I was the only one who couldn’t beat it for a long time. Felt like a loser for getting my ass kicked by this game a billion times, so I tried hard to beat it!
Never got past the scissors boss at the beginning until now! With the magic of save sates... freaking game is impossible.

The dang screen crunch. Watching this after seeing ACESpark chronicle it really puts all of this into perspective. HAD THIS VERSION BEEN PROPERLY ADJUSTED FOR THE SMALLER SIZE OF THE GAME GEAR, then this would have actually been a lot more fair.
And honestly? The boss RNG with the final fight with Robotnik is ruthless and insane because in this version of the game, it can do WHATEVER IT WANTS, WHENEVER IT WANTS, and it has no set pattern. Some attempts literally end as soon as you enter because he uses the flashing lightning and you cannot react to that.
Besides the extra screen size on the Master System version, some things are MUCH easier there in terms of the bosses. Namely, the first boss has no variance on the bombs dropped towards you, and the Metabuta in Green Hills is more likely to use the slow move - where he hits his hands together before stomping his feet and rolling up again - a lot more often, but your mileage may vary.
Although this was incredibly hard for me to play, it’s one of my favourite video games and is probably the only video game where I loved every single soundtrack!

Wow. This reminds me of battletoads on game gear. Super super hard!!! This is why I think that "Super Mario World" on Super Nintendo is one of the best sidescrollers of the 90s and of all time! You could save the game every few levels you beat.
Before the levels begin there are images of tails with Sonic in every single one of them but tails isn’t actually with you in the levels so this is false advertising
