- What do we love about this narrowboat life on the canals of the UK? This episode is the perfect was to show you. Cruising and stopping to explore beautiful towns and villages on the way. We continue our cruise north on the stunning Shropshire Union Canal from Audlem to Nantwich, towards the Middlewich Branch. We explore the lovely village of Audlem, including St.James Church, Audlem Cemetery and Audlem Mill, and find out about the history behind the name of the Shroppie Fly pub.
Hello! If you are new here we are Caroline and Pete! In 2021, after 10 years living in Texas, we sold up and moved back home to the UK to live full time aboard a 60ft narrowboat with our West Highland Terriers! That’s so lovely of you to say Leigh! I have to say choosing the music to match the footage is one of my favourite parts of the editing process. The only boats we did in our time in Houston were cruise ships out of Galveston! 😊

Thanks so much for some lovely cruising, this time at a more leisurely pace! The Shroppie strikes me as having been much better engineered than other canals - sturdy bridges, good depth, proper bywashes at the locks and the concrete encasement you referred to. I did some research into that dismantled railway bridge just north of Audlem and couldn't find any leads. You passed underneath the existing railway from Crewe to Shrewsbury just before Nantwich. What I did establish was that the Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company, as its name suggests, was the only canal company in England with its own substantial railway network, the main line of which ran from Stafford to Shrewsbury, crossing the canal at Gnosall. These lines were later taken over by the LNWR, which in turn became the LMS in 1923.
That’s very interesting! Like you said, it’s very noticeable that the Shropshire Union engineering is superior to other canals. Those soaring bridges are just stunning. Thanks for watching 😊

A lovely cruise! When you said just three locks today, we’re only going to Nantwich, Martin said ‘but what about Hack Green?’ Lol Pete kept those two locks as a surprise 😂🤣 It was so nice seeing Audlem again, we loved the moorings at the bottom of the flight, you filmed the gorgeous views from there, beautiful place. Glad you saw Olly the monkey too 🐵😂 We love that whole area xx 😘
Thank you ! Olly the Monkey was moored next to us in the Llangollen basin too! It became a joke when we were travelling with Paul & Anthony that Pete would always be less that truthful about how many locks there were for fear of a mutiny 😂
