A Not So Friendly Encounter On The Shropshire Union Canal | More Narrowboat Adventures Ep 46

- Is this the meanest lock keeper we have met during our time on the canals in our narrowboat? He certainly added some unwanted excitement to our trip down the Audlem locks!
We continue our journey up the absolutely stunning Shropshire Union Canal, with its soaring bridges and lush green corridor, and beautiful little towns and villages on the way. The Shroppie is one of our most favourite canals that we have cruised since we sold up and bought a narrowboat to live on! There was far too much gorgeous footage to cram into one video so check out our other Shroppie videos! In this episode we cruise from Market Drayton to Audlem, after visiting the Ginger and Spice Festival and the Floating Market.
So beautiful to watch the world go by from a boater’s point of view with all the beautiful bridges and historic locks. You should do a booklet on all the yummie places to stop by or interesting places to visit… and some merchandise with your beautiful logo and colors!😊❤😊
We are glad we can take you along on these cruises! I’m not sure we can do any better than the Nicholson’s or Pearson’s guides which give so much information along the route, but we’ve thought a few times about some merchandise, so perhaps that’s something I will explore more this year 😊
You are living a life I long for. Have had numerous narrow boat holidays over the years and one day would really like to own my own boat and live the life on the canals. Best wishes to you both and your dogs.
We can highly recommend this life, although we didn’t even have the benefit of any narrowboat holidays before we took the plunge! But no regrets at all so far! Thanks for watching 😊

Core the last time I was in Market Drayton 1965 l cycled there from Stoke on Trent to an Air display by the RAF the town looks just the same as it did then lm realy enjoying your vlogs and your lovey dog 😎😎😎

One more comment, you got a very good workout on this day. Walking to the locks and then opening and closing them. You must of really enjoyed your fish and chips that night.
Oh yes I really earned my fish and chips that day! I certainly get my steps in working the locks, but I much prefer doing that job than navigating the boat into the locks! 😊

The fish and chips looked wonderful. Not any good fish and chips places left around here. There where some years back but long gone. Hope the puppies and you are doing well. Looked cool - warm here as it's August which tends to be our warmest month here in our state. Some 90F temps the last couple weeks. High today is 81F and around 60F at night. But lots of rain forecasted but most missing us. We need a bit for the farmers and their crops. Take care - Thank you for the lovely video. God Bless
Hi Tom! We used to drive a three hour round trip to get fish and chips when we lived in Houston! It was one red by a British guy who imported all of the frying equipment from the Uk to make it as authentic as possible It was definitely worth the drive. It’s lovely to be back and have fish and chips readily available after a long cruising day! Hope you are keeping well 😊

Glad you made it past the swan
He was one of the worst we have encountered. So protective of his mate who was also there. And I was trying to give him his space but also trying to get through the lock!
Those swans can be so vicious. I was attacked this week by a massive seagull. I didn’t see it’s young near my car and when I went to put some stuff in my car it came for me ( and it was a bloody big one) and crapped down my back 😱.
Pork scratchings are to me like peas and beans are to Anthony 🤣, those lemon drizzles and bakewells look amazing though.

Anthony calls pork scratchings ‘old lady toenails’ so he’s in agreement with you there! When a bird crapped down Paul’s back we told him it was meant to be lucky 😂. They are proper vicious when they are protecting their young aren’t they, which we totally understand, but it’s quite scary sometimes! See you very soon hopefully 😊
I have a couple of swans near my mooring who have been here for years, Big Bird and his missus. He is very territorial so when she is ready to mate he sees off her older siblings and any other newcomers. Last year he attacked an older swan who we managed to rescue and I ended up carrying it across a field to safer water (it was very heavy and wet). B bird normally gets out of the way if you flap your arms or coat and make yourself bigger but of course he is left alone if possible 💕🦆
Wow that’s good that you saved the other swan. We hadn’t realised how protective they were until we started living on our boat, and especially aggressive towards our dogs, even when they are paying no attention to them! We are very guarded around them now, but they are still very beautiful and elegant! Thanks for watching 😊

Another interesting vlog, thanks guys. I'm intrigued by your comment about reversing. When reversing I use the bow thruster to move the bow to whatever side is needed to aim the stern of the boat in the desired direction, as you would to move the stern with the tiller when going forward. If you've not tried it, give it a go - works great for me.

LOL, I encountered a giant goose at that lock years ago, took me ages to get through waiting for it to leave me alone.
We waited. And waited. And then I just decided to walk calmly past him and hope for the best! Not something you want to deal with very often! Thanks for watching 😊

He was not a friendly swan Leigh. He was protecting his mate, which was the other side of the lock gate, and most likely their nesting site. They get even more protective when they are with their babies! Ready Brel is a British breakfast cereal that I can most liken to Cream of Wheat. The advert when we were kids had a boy walking to school in the cold weather with an orange glow around him as he had had Ready Brek for breakfast! 😊
You worked hard .. hope you enjoyed your fish and chips. Swans are beautiful creatures but can be scary .. especially if you have a yappy dog ... I'm thinking here of my daughter's cocker spaniel.

We definitely earned our fish and chips that day, with the unexpected Audlem flight! We’ve definitely become far more cautious around swans, especially with the dogs. This one was especially protective and so close to the lock gate!! 😳
The whole journey seems so recent in my mind 😂 Those pork pies were scrummy, and the chippy was visited too 👏

Do you ever come further South. We often sit by the canal at Newbury, Berks and drink tea from the cafe and watch the boats passing in the summer. I think it is the Avon and Kennet canal.
The Kennet & Avon is on our list for 2024 for sure. Part of our vague plan to ‘stay south’. Perhaps our paths will cross! 😊

Love your vlogs but we are a bit confused as to the time of year they are filmed and what year as they seem to jump from one to another.
Thanks so much Roy. Our regular vlogs have always been running several months behind, as we didn’t make the decision to actually publish what we had filmed until 6 months after we have moved on board. We have always intended to catch up, but it hasn’t happened yet! We don’t want to miss anything out as this started off as our own personal vlog of our travels. Every now and again we put out something more current, like the Crick Boat Show vlogs which were more time sensitive, or our journey over the Pontcyscyllte Aqueduct, as that was the first time we had used the drones. Sorry for the confusion. One day we will be all caught up I promise! 😂
In this video there was a tree laying in the canal, is there a phone # you can call to report any problems?
Yes John, we can either call the Canal and River Trust or email them. I think some people even contact them on twitter too! 👍

We are running several months behind with our vlogs as we didn’t start publishing them until 6 months aft we we moved aboard. These will be the last few videos with footage of our oldest westie, Jasper, before we had to say goodbye to him due to very aggressive cancer 😞
Unusually choppy editing this time, short bursts of music and very brief shots of some gorgeous scenes, I'm a bit out of breath after having been rushed so fast from Drayton to Audlem!
We have so much footage to get though and I’m trying to catch up so we can be more current, so I’ve been trimming some of the longer shots down. Thanks for watching 😊

We don’t want to miss anything out because the vlogs started off as our own chronological diary of our travels, and we don’t want to change that. I do my best to get videos edited and out as often as I can but it’s a huge job which has been a very steep learning curve, as I’m sure you can appreciate. It’s hard to please everyone sadly
