- Winter is back with a vengeance on the Macclesfield Canal! A narrowboat cruise in hail is not pleasant at all! We travel from Congleton to Bollington on the Macclesfield Canal with Paul & Anthony from @NarrowboatLifeUnlocked, tackling the Bosley flight of locks and turn onto the Peak Forest Canal at Marple Junction. Join us for the next few episodes as we cruise our narrowboats, One Day More and Morning Star, on the Macclesfield Canal and the Peak Forest Canal.
Hello! If you are new here we are Caroline and Pete, and 2021, after 10 years living in Texas, we sold up and moved back home to the UK to live full time aboard a 60ft narrowboat, One Day More, with our West Highland Terriers! Join us in our day to day life as we continuously cruise the canals and rivers of the UK. All of the ups, and the downs and everything in between!

When watching your vlogs I always think how pleasant it must be for the people living right on the canals. Love the Peak District, one of my favourite places in UK. 🇦🇺
We always say the same Carolyn, and for us in our boat it is a far more affordable way to enjoy the views! Sometimes you do hear of people who put up no mooring signs near their property, although it is designated mooring space owned by the Canal and River Trust, or of owners and odd with boaters for using locks and breaking their peace, which we always think is a little odd as the canals were there way before, and you know it’s there when you’re buying the house. For the most part though we love exchanging waves and nods hello to canal side home owners, and have had some of the best conversations with people living in lock cottages 😊

Jasper: the perfect dog name. I had a Jasper, the perfect dog! Died in 1997 (born in 1976!), frightening how quickly the years slip past.
That’s lovely hear you too had a Jasper. He was our first westie and we picked the name out before we introduced him to our children, as we wanted to make sure that was indeed his name! Sophie, then aged 6, said that she would have called him Snowy! 😊
It was nice to see Poppy making sure Pete was alright in that weather. I'm sure Hamish was asleep in front on the fire 😂
She’s so funny when we are cruising! She has to up on the back whatever the weather so she doesn’t miss a thing! Hamish is more sensible and stays inside when the weather is horrible! 😂😊
Loved this one. It’s the very last trip Mick and I made together. You were coming back as we were making our way up. Anthony and Paul gave my Husband and friend a lift back to our boat after you’d done Bosley on your way back down. That day the weather was horrendous! They’d walked up to Bosley to see what we had in store lol. We moored at Bugsworth Basin right by the arm you moored in. We had the bench and extra “green” bit. I called it my garden! For health reasons, we were there for 9 weeks, even put up a bird feeding station and saw some beauties using it.
Glad we could bring back some lovely memories for you Wendy. We were with the boys last night, and I read your comment and we were all reminiscing about that day, coming down the Bosley flight in that dreadful weather that came in! And once you’re going there’s nowhere to stop! And giving Mick and his friend a lift! Isn’t the boating community the best. Fond memories indeed ❤️
@@onedaymoreaboard Mick said the boys were so nice, it wasn’t a problem for them at all. They dropped Mick and friend under the bridge near our boat and as they sailed past, Anthony said he’d dropped off a couple of reprobates for me lol.

Poppy really is quite the little star in this vlog. I'm always intrigued at how engaged she seems to be with all aspects of your travels. But to see her devotion to dad and duty, hunkering under the towel in horrendous weather was most impressive. Makes me want to give her a hug. Hamish also looked good perched on top. Has he continued to do that? I can't wait to watch you on the Peak Forest, which was one of my earliest canal watching with Silver Fox. Take care and enjoy those cakes. Leigh
She truly enjoys her boat dog life! When we were in Texas binge watching narrowboat vlogs she would avidly watch everything going on, and hop along the TV console when she saw her doggie friends, some of which she’s met in real life now (Dexter and Jess and Archie!). If she could stay up on the back all day she would! Even when we are moored she often takes herself up to her lookout spot and peaks under the canopy greeting anyone who walks by. She’s such a funny little character! Pete said he put her down side the boat a couple of times during that hail storm but she jumped right back up the steps again! We put Hamish up on the top every now and again, but his spatial awareness is not great now and even if we clip him in we worry about him misjudging the edge and dangling over the side! I’m really enjoying editing the Peak Forest Canal footage as it’s so, so beautiful! It was one of our very early bucket list canals from watching other vloggers. We picked the perfect time of year when things were just starting to green up a little, but you could still see through the trees to the stunning views! I know you will love it 😊

Really enjoyed this vlog .... Small favour , if when you pass new mills marina and you film a man covered in paint chatting to his nieghbours instead of getting on with decorating his boat, can you leave that section on the cutting room floor, the wife will be watching 🤣

Poppy clearly sees herself as Chief Supervisor for climbing up through the locks. That's a very critical eye she's casting over the proceedings.

Yay! That’s great to hear. We were forecast 100% snow but it never came! We just got very cold and very drizzly rain! But thankfully it’s turned quite mild again now 😊

Good heavens I had heard that mad dogs and English men would stand in the noonday sun but apparently they stand in hailstorms also!😅
That’s so true! I asked why they carried on in that weather and they said there were no good mooring spots, and once they were cold and wet anyway it made sense just to keep going 😂

@@onedaymoreaboard Temps hit 60 F today. Cold front came though and thunderstorms and a couple of tornado warnings 20+ miles south of Madison this afternoon. Near Evansville, Wis. - first Feb. funnel / tornado on the books I think. Next week looks like highs in the mid 30 and 20's or less at night. Take care... be safe and again thank you for the videos. (ps there are some good pictures of it online.)
I remember moving to Indiana back in the 1990s and the town installing a tornado warning system and I was terrified every Friday when it went off to test, until I remembered it was just a test! 😂
@@onedaymoreaboard I am a storm spotter for the local EMA and NWS offices. Had a EF1 go by me at about 600 ft. Was a fun time..... not. But our county is in a bad spot. 3 NWS radars only see storms 1 mile above ground. So ground spotting units are a way of life here. Take care - cannot wait till the next video. 🙂

It really is a beautiful canal, and we got to enjoy it all over again on our return from the Peak Forest Canal back to the Trent & Mersey Canal on our way down to the Crick Boat Show. I was laughing all over again at the memories of Anthony and I getting stuck in the mud and then going to find cake to make ourselves feel better! We were both absolutely splattered from spinning wheels but we couldn’t stop laughing! And Paul said where was the video evidence 😂

Well, you picked the best day to be away from the boat. ☺ The hail would have been painful. At least Poppy was wrapped up but she still looked pretty miserable. She was a good girl to stay with her dad. Having all of you to work on the locks made is so much faster and easier. I truly don't know how solo boaters manage something like that if there's no one around to help. ❤
I definitely picked the best time to be away, although the weather in Dublin was still very rainy and cold! Poppy is so funny, sat there looking miserable but if you put her down inside the boat she runs straight back up! Doesn’t want to miss a thing! We have a couple of solo boater friends who have their own tried and tested methods but it is hard work, and we always make a point of staying and helping single handers through locks or lift bridges whenever we can. Team work makes the dream work as we always say! 😊
@@onedaymoreaboard That's the thing of it. If someone is around to help they will because it is a great community. From the lock volunteers, other boaters and even people who are just walking by on the tow path. Lots of helpers.
Exactly that Dorothy! We have had the best conversations with other boaters and walkers at locks, and love getting help, especially from children that are fascinated by it all, and want to help push the gates open and closed 😊

Not pleasant at all! I asked why they kept going in that weather, but they said there was nowhere good to moor, and once you’re wet and cold anyway you may as well just keep going!! 😂
Another lovely video 😃. I used to dry fry our bacon, ( put bacon in cold pan and fry) used less gas than the grill, and was much quicker! 👍
We do sometimes dry fry in a pan, and until you mentioned it I hadn’t really thought about the gas consumption being less, but I think you’re right! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊
You could have reduced the bywash in those locks by opening the upper lock gate paddles either the lower gates open, that way the excess water flies through the lock instead of going around the gulley.

9:15 Ins´t better to use fender on the sides of boat?
We’ve always been told not to cruise with our fenders down, to avoid being potentially stuck in narrow locks, and to minimise the risk of them being knocked off and ending up caught around your own or someone else’s prop. Thanks for watching 😊

Do you need to pay to go through the lochs?
We pay just over £1,000 for our annual license for use of the canal and river network, which includes use of the facilities, like water and waste disposal, and also goes towards lock maintenance, so there is separate toll to pass through the locks. Thanks for watching 😊
