The two stars of Calgary 1988 go head to head. Rumours that Edwards had showered, changed and caught a taxi home before Nykaenen landed prove unfounded. Head to head starts at 1:38.

Yeah, credit to Nykaenen for managing that little bit farther. But dude, 71 meters is still a hell of a distance. Especially for a man who's not had much real practice. What a hero, chased his dream and gave it all he'd got. The true Olympic spirit. The pride of Britain. Superb stuff.
I agree 1,000 per cent. Eddie The Eagle embodies the traditional olympic ideals much more than someone like Lance Armstrong with their megabuck training budgets and PEDs or certain eastern bloc countries with their state sponsored PED programs (all to show who is "Superior").
Agreed, but in my opinion they are both equally as impressive and idols. Matti was focused more on practice and discipline, but he had just as much passion for it. Eddie focused on his dream and never gave up, that's what makes him great. You can barely compare these two, because they approached their passion very differently. What makes them similar is the love for their sport and that's enough for me to call someone a hero.
Finland gives to Eddie few weeks of training with most best jumpers in that time. He jumps with Nykänen. Everybody remember Eddie and his song "hyppää eetu hyppää" ... yes one of legendary musician makes a song but died at the same day when Eddie came to studio. Eddie have to sing it alone but it was funny and peoples loved it. That movie didn't tell the true story even it's better than the movie.
Matti was the best character in the movie. He was such a professional that he had a lot of great advice. He wasn't totally arrogant. He was just so good that he could't help but try to pass on his wisdom to someone who was absolutely new to the sport.
Heh, too bad it was all made up because the guy didn't speak a word of english in real life. There is a true story about him though; when a reporter was making fun of Eddie in an interview, Nykänen got angry and told him "why don't you go up to that tower yourself if you dare"
Eddie said in an interview in 1988 with Günther Jauch that Matti was a really nice guy. He said that he couldn't speak a lot of english, but he was able to speak some. And Eddie could speak a bit of finnish also. That's how they could communicate, not a lot but well. Eddie said that especially to the other jumpers Matti was always nice but he didn't really like the press and that people took pictures of him. I didn't know him myself, but judging from that I would say he was not arrogant at all.
Yeah the movie said it right, had Eddie trained longer or trained since he was 6 he wouldve been much better or perhaps better than Matti. He was 22 when he started ski jumping and still managed to do the 90 meter jump and landed 71 meters at his first time, thats some skill.

I hope he remains in the British consciousness his entire life. His story is inspirational, and if he comes around every 4 years , so be it, that would be enough. The winner that year Matti Ensio Nykänen, passed away aged just 55, he had a very, very tumultuous life off the circuit. Undiagnosed ADHD, until almost the very end of his life, was very, very cruel. The discipline of an athlete often draws ADHD sufferers , Johnny Wilkinson, David Beckham to name but only two. After giving up one obsession, they immediately require another. But the world has just too many temptations, so without any of us knowing this, ( including Matti), the often strick discipline of an athlete is what truly saves themselves from themself, and all the records, medals, and adulation, can, and often are a distraction. I wish Eddie happiness and Matti peace.
