      ​@@josephrion3514 I mean, Coca Cola isn't spelled coke, so it kind of makes sense that people wouldn't call a coca cola a coke. What annoys me is how in one restaurtant they will give me all the soda options when I ask for a coke and at another restaurant across the street they'll assume I want a coca cola when I say coke. Inconsistency is what annoys me. Most places just let you fill your own drink, these days, though. So the problem is kind of moot.

      @@wya5705 I'm a Black American that grew up in the South. There are millions of us. I want to say that first off there is not one Southern accent. Black Southern accent is different from White. You would be amazed that Black people that grew up on the south side of Atlanta speak very different from Black people that grew up in the Stone Mountain or Buckhead parts of Atlanta. Even in South Ga. some Black accents down there sound alot better than others. I grew up in South Ga. with a Southern accent but it was alot different than that of some of my friends from a few miles up the road. For you to hate on all Southern accents is pretty small minded.

    Fun Fact: William H. Hoover, the Henry Ford of the vacuum cleaner, was actually American, and was established in the USA before expanding abroad. However somehow, only the UK decided to start calling all vacuum cleaners "hoovers."

    Back in the 90s if someone was good orally it was called Hoover Action, but since Dyson came along nobody references the powerful suction of a vacuum cleaner.

      Vacuum is the original. Hoover is just the brand. Vacuum makes way more sense considering you use it for a bunch of other items

      Vacuum isn't slang, but the term has picked up because other brands don't use the term in their advertising and hoover isn't the leading brand anymore, it's Dyson.

    For anyone who doesn't know: a hoover is a brand of vacuum which was so popular it became the word people use to describe the action of vacuuming and the item used to vacuum. Basically. Im gonna do the hoovering with the hoover. Or im gonna vacuum with the Henry/dyson.

    When I first moved to the US, I was at a mall one time, and wanted to find a chemist (US: pharmacist). I went to the information desk to ask if there was one in the mall. But chemist had no meaning to the receptionist there. She just gave me a blank stare. I had to say ‘the place you buy medicine’. And was told, no, there was no pharmacist in the mall. 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

      Haha, I definitely would have been confused as well! A lot of Americans seem to view chemists as either chemistry teachers, researchers for private companies, or mad scientists/government officials who are studying chemicals to make weapons like bombs. A pharmacist would have been the last thing to come to mind 😅

      @@Alyakismydutchname Chemists to us are simply people who are experts in chemistry. It's a really broad term in contrast to pharmacist which is specifically about medicine and only medicine. Honestly, if you called it an apothecary or even a herbalist an American would definitely know what you're talking about sooner than if you called it a chemist.

      @F.B.I • Federal Bureau of Investigation The pharmacies where I live are mostly in Targets, Walmarts, and big name grocery stores like Giant. I guess malls are dying in America so they aren't really in malls anymore, at least near me. But I know with the giant near me they have a drive through on the side of the building for the pharmacy where you just pull in, give them your ID, and they give you whatever medicine the doctor prescribed to you.

      And then on the inside of the grocery store or Walmart/Target they will have a pharmacy section that includes just an over-the-counter section which is the medicine that doesn't require a prescription to buy. That'd be like multivitamins, Tylenol, melatonin, cough syrup, etc.
      I've only ever had one prescription in my life and it was for prednisone so that's really the only reason i know about the drive through.

      @@AJeazy I get my prescriptions mailed whenever possible. Takes 1-3 days, and saves me the trouble of going out and waiting in a long line to request the prescription be filled, then the time it takes for it to be filled.

      It just shows how far Hoover has fallen. Vacuum cleaners were never called Hoovers in America, but everyone used to know that Hoover was a brand of vacuum cleaners. They invented vacuum cleaners and were the biggest brand until maybe 20 years ago.
