Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order Feels Like Coming Home (Review)

  • Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order is a game that in each of its components, is never as strong as the games it seeks to emulate. But none of this really matters. This is the most purely distilled Star Wars fix fans have had since...well I don't even know when. In an era where Star Wars fandom is deeply divided, Jedi Fallen Order feels important for its unifying quality.

I'm someone who was really burned out of Star Wars thanks to the many movies with questionable quality that came after the original trilogy, and thanks to the low-effort games that EA has released in the past couple of years. But this game is a breath of fresh air. It's exceptionally well made, it combines a lot of gameplay elements wonderfully from some of my favourite genres, it's truly a joy to play and it reignited my love and hope for Star Wars again. This is my New Hope.
You can really tell that the many artists, developers and writers put their heart and soul into making this game. These people actually understand what was so special about the original movies and in general, about Star Wars. This game is a work of passion. The atmosphere is strong, the soundtrack is mesmerizing and evokes the same feelings as those old movies did with their own music. The characters are well written and likeable, the world is rich and full of mysteries and interesting places waiting to be explored.
In terms of gameplay, the best way to describe Fallen Order would be that it's a lovechild between Uncharted and Sekiro, coupled with a Metroidvania-style level-design and progression. The exploration is rewarding, the combat is tactical, deep, fast-paced, and satisfying, and there's always a strong sense of progression. I completed it to 100% and got all the achievements on Jedi Master difficulty (it took me roughly 27-29 hours) and I still feel I would play it more.
People should definitely buy it, or rent it using Origin Access Premiere (like I did). It deserves it, we should support great games like this.

      @X5J2UY Před 4 lety +9

With all due respect....have you even played Sekiro? Fallen Order is a fun game, but gameplaywise its incredibly flawed and clunky compared to Sekiro. Tons of issues with animations and flow. Just played Sekiro again, compared it to FO and man.....it doesn't hold its own or even come close. Skill Up describes it perfectly. This game is a mash-up of different popular games, but never reaches the quality of the games it tries to emulate. Not to mention the technical issues on consoles. The story is alright and idk if people would praise it as much if it wasn't for the last fight/cameo. I enjoyed it. The Art design is incredible. Its definitely the best Star Wars games in years (which isn't too hard if we're honest). I would give it a 7,5-8/10

@@X5J2UY Yes, in fact I was one of the first people who have completed it to 100% (I killed all main and side bosses, optional bosses, collected every Prayer Bead, etc.). I was also the first people who have discovered some of the very hidden Terror bosses and I posted about them on Reddit.
Sekiro is a great game, but in terms of gameplay, it has a lot of flaws - more flaws than Fallen Order. But people give it a pass because it's a From Software title and criticising any game of theirs is a heresy in their mind.
Just to give you two examples of the critical gameplay flaws (there are around 10). The stealth system is completely broken and inconsistent. Sometimes the game's script makes it so certain bosses/enemies automatically detect you regardless of how good your stealth is and/or what items did you use before. While in other cases, you can stealth attack enemies without even playing carefully, and in other cases, stealth is only possible if you basically exploit the game/AI.
The other critical flaw is how prosthetic tools work. In theory, using prosthetic tools is essential because these are key elements that the player should use if he wants to overcome his enemies and exploit their weaknesses. In practice though, the ability to use them and really dwelve into them opens up relatively late, and the game instead of incentivizing the usage of them, it
      discourages people from using them.
Why? Because you have to loot them all the time if you want to be able to use them, and it will reinforce the typical survival game mentality in the player's head - that they should only use them when it's absolutely necessary. In the end though, because of that, the players will never use prosthetic tools at all because they will always wait for the right moment.
This also makes the prosthetic upgrade skills meaningless. If prosthetic tools are key elements, these should have worked the same way as potions. Each rest at a shrine should have fill their ammo up, so players could always use them, they would be encouraged to use them. But at the same time, they would also have to manage them carefully, because they would only be able to carry a set amount of prosthetic ammo at a time, obviously. This way, the prosthetic upgrade skills would be way more meaingful.

Great review! I wish you would have touched on the unlockables. For a game that rewards exploration the unlockables are incredibly weak. All they did were lazy color pallet swaps. This is a STAR WARS game where you play as a Jedi and yet you don't even get one cool jedi robe? The force unleashed set a really high standard with cool unlockable outfits/skins. Even the more recent Spider-Man was absolutely insane with this. Really no excuse they couldn't have put in one or two.

I agree with you about combat. It was really frustrating to break an enemy's guard only to have it instantly refresh after hitting them once. As far as Cal swinging wildly with his attacks, I actually think this is something that is representative of his story. He was still a young padawan when he went into hiding and didn't regularly train with his light saber for obvious reasons. I am not sure if it is an actual reason for the game play, but a plausible explanation that I have heard from other critiques.

On the topic of combat, I really do think that this is a game that demands to be played on its hardest difficulty.
My first playthrough was on Jedi Knight, and I had a lot of the same complaints that you did regarding flow.
My current playthrough, however, is on Jedi Grandmaster, and the difference is night and day. The increased damage and aggression and the more precise parry timing really push you to take the initiative.
The more passive play that is allowed (and arguably encouraged) at lower difficulties is pretty likely to get you killed here. If you want to be successful, you have to be on the offense, switching focus between enemies, and making the most of your abilities.
It's kind of a shame that Grandmaster isn't the default, because I think a lot of people will overlook it.

I think the game that has gotten closest to jedi combat is Jedi Academy. The lightsaber customization is great and your force powers are really important in it. I think if they make a sequel to this, they should take some inspiration from that game and implement a time slow ability like as an ultimate or something because in the Star Wars canon, the reason jedi are so powerful in combat is because of the force basically telling them what to do. It's like spidey sense and the more powerful/in tune with the force you are, you can literally see the future/potential future.

While the combat system definitely does have it's problems, I feel like it's a bit misunderstood by a lot of people. FO's combat isn't really designed to be mostly melee. You are a jedi for a reason and you're supposed to use your force powers in combat. The biggest problems with its combat system always seem to occur when you have to fight multiple enemies at once, and it can get frustrating if you try to take them all out with just your lightsaber. I'll admit that in the earlier sections of the game you don't have that many abilities and your force meter is pretty limited but there's almost always a way for you decimate the crowd smartly if you take the time think before you act, and then take out one or two enemies in melee with your saber. Later on in the game, you have so many tools that you can deal with everything thrown in your way but you have to know what works and what doesn't. If you just jump right in and think you can smash your way through a horde of enemies with cool lightsaber combos then you will have a bad time.
Aagain, it does have problems which Respawn needs to adress in a sequel but it's better as it seems at first glance.

Saying something to the effect of "just do another KOTOR like an RE2 remake" isn't a compromise, it's not suggesting an easier task than making an entirely new game, it's just saying what IP you want them to make the next game off of.

@@Szanth I like to use three terms when discussing revisited games, remake, remaster and reimagining. If people did this consistently, there wouldn't be any confusion. RE2 falls under the category of reimagining where it keeps a lot of features but isn't trying to be a 1:1 recreation. A remake would be close to 1:1 but with new assets like Spyro Reignited or Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition. And a remaster is a HD rerelease of a game that still uses largely the same assets like TLoU on PS4.

This is not meant as an insult, but an observation: what passes as "good storytelling" by gamers' standards is generally pretty underwhelming. Maybe we should have higher standards.
Side-note: games don't need plots to be good, but when they are present, they ought to be measured against the highest orders of storytelling. VG narratives have the advantage of more time to brew, audience interaction, and player choice. They are capable of more than we give them credit for, and should therefor be held against a higher standard than other visual mediums, not lower.

@@KhaosKontroller Jedi Academy's sophisticated lightsaber combat systems still hold up remarkably well (especially with dismemberment enabled) but the level designs suck, the story is meh but still a lot better than the sequel trilogy lol.

@@weaverquest Idk man. I've never personally played it, but it always looks kinda clunky to me. That may just be the animation tho. The only old SW game I've played recently, was Jedi Outcast, and that shit is rough af by today's standard.

@@KhaosKontroller Jedi Academy really doesn't hold up well at all lol I've been trying to force myself to play it since it became backwards compatible on xbox one and yea the gameplay is so so basic and clunky can't do it... 15 years ago I would've loved it though.

You really hit the nail on the head with the combat, while I enjoyed the game the combat just felt off to me the entire time and I kept trying new things to see if it was just me or the game but you absolutely spelled it out for me!

From your thoughts on combat and movement, it sounds like the devs should have played a little more Jedi Knight for inspiration, and thrown on that Titanfall smoothness.

Yeah, the template for the combat should've definitely been the Jedi Knight games.

I bought this game watching your review, and just finished it on Jedi Master difficulty. Even with the flaws, it was a fantastic experience. The exploration, combat and puzzles - the developers combined these elements very meticulously. The narrative was also satisfying, so much that I’d fully accept it as a canon.
As a classic Star Wars fan and as a Dark Souls fan, I’m more than happy. I’ll now play Sekiro and see how these two games are different.
