Guardians of the Galaxy will make you lament the fact there isn’t an equivalent game for Iron Man, or Thor or Hulk or Black Widow or whoever. You imagine a parallel universe where alongside your MCU blu-rays are a row of Marvel games just like this one - adventures full of spectacle and comedy and action and heart. We’re never gonna get that universe, but we do get Guardians of the Galaxy so that’s something.

Ok
I'm shocked by the title. I can't believe what I'm seeing 🤯 Ok now I'm even more shocked. I thought this game would be a dumpster fire.
I honestly was very excited at first then I saw a trailer awhile back and was 100% not getting this game. After hearing your review along with ACG s review I think I will buy this actually. What turned me off was the characters themselves bc they looked so different and sounded different from what I'm used to hearing. Rocket is still eh and drax doesn't sound great but maybe I will come to like it.
Fuck this... I've been trying to get a 30 series card for over a year now, why advertise something that doesn't exist?
advertising non existent products? What's the point of them paying you, when miners buy these of straight of factory line? These never hit retail shelves
Godfall: Too Damn Shiny!!!
Guardians: Just shiny enough.
Hahaha, yeah, that was my thought as well! =D
Yup 😁
I feel like Crystal Dynamics got set up for failure. Avengers would’ve been a fantastic game had Square not been so greedy and pushed them to make it a “live service”. I hope GotG does really well so that Square can stop making dead services games.
The single player story missions in Avengers were actually fun. It was those forced Destiny type missions that ruined it
What I think happened is that Squenix possibly aimed for both games to be a live-service looter, but perhaps then decided to change the direction of "Guardians" when they saw what happened with "Avengers". - Then again, that would be a tight window to just change course into a story-driven single-player game, so that theory is unlikely. - Another theory is that they just tested the waters with two different types of games and bet on "Avengers" to be the money-generators cause of its popularity and just "gave the Guardians game a story, cause who wants that". - But it must be painful for Crystal Dynamics to look over at Eidos Montreal and probably wish they could do that for the Avengers. - Both studios came off the last Tomb Raider trilogy, that's what they're good at. - Maybe if "Guardians" sells enough Squenix will learn from that and have another go at an "Avengers" game and make it similar or even connect it or something. I mean, they have a license...
@@DKFProductions I disagree, the combat at higher levels can be fun, but the enemy design nullify it by turning it mindless chaotic bullet sponge button smash. There is little to no strategy, no truly co-op element (like enemies that require teamup between too different characters to take down, or two characters combo movies like they do in the movies or comics). This is especially true in the bosses and mini-boss just 4-5 characters endless spamming attacks at random gang banging watching the health bar decrease.
This is totally different from what you see in Arkham or Spider-Man (or even Infamous or Prototype), actual good super hero games.
Ehhhh there’s problems in that game far beyond the live service aspect
Yeah the opening sections are as plain as the nose on my face, a single player experience and then somehow it becomes a looter shooter/fighter after the opening act against the same enemy type over and over.
This game actually helped me get through a depressive weekend.
Sometimes playing a good game can help you get through the worst of things.

See this is what I like a game that isn’t trying to be all things. It is a simple 20 hour single player experience, but they put all their talent into making that experience the best it possibly can be.
What's a 150 hour game worth if it's trash and you end up not playing it past 10 hours anyway?
That's my opinion.
So many bloated games that aren't worth a damn.
Love this style of game.
its a fucking interactive game. Press B, Press A... Yay this is a fucking Triple A game in 2021.

Same, it was a nice cool down from the constant fighting. I dig them a lot!
I like them but they’re too slow for me personally
same! i genuinely really love the mechanic, but i feel like it could benefit from speeding up the process a small bit. i feel like the animation with peter lifting up the walkman and the guardians running over is too long lmao
I honestly didn't expect to see that Title in my notification. Glad to know that you enjoyed it man and the game turned out to be good. 😀

As a guy in my late 30s with more money than time, yes, 50 quid for a tight 20 hour and very fun single player game is exactly what I want to pay. I hope the industry is learning this.
Exactly. Same here..I rather get 20h amazing hours and be done rather than 20 ok hours and 40 hours of filler.

Just finished this game last night and was very impressed with it. It's been awhile since I've been this invested in characters and story in a game. The writing was fantastic and I really hope this sells well enough for a sequel! This is what Avengers should have been, not a looter shooter.
Did you stick around after the credits for the lil easter eggs? Loved the ending
@@codymartinez4493 Haha I did, the back and forth conversation with Peter and Mirror Peter is hilarious.
Too bad it didn't sell well enough
I personally loved how the combat almost mirrored the story. In the beginning, I was floundering and relied on myself and the team’s individual abilities. But the end, I had learned how to combo everyone’s abilities together, similar to the characters understanding each other. Also, I enjoyed the huddles. I think they offered a good reprieve as well as playing into peters role as leader. Just my opinion obviously. Feel free to disagree.
Oh ya I can't wait to see what they can do with more polish. I loved taking more of a backseat by the end of the game and letting my team sow chaos
All I can say is that no game has ever made me actually want to interact with other humans as much as Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy did.
There were a couple of moments I actually teared up a little.
There were also a couple of moments I jumped out of my chair in excitement like a 12 year old watching cartoons.

I really like it when they include advanced difficulty options, it makes it a lot easier for us dads to set up a game for the kids. Sometimes it's pretty nice to be able to skip QTEs as well!

Incredible campaign and set pieces, and the gameplay never got boring as the abilities scaled up well over time and felt fun. The writing here was simply incredible. Maybe even the best ever because it was just so committed to these characters, they all felt so genuine.

@@Gamer_Zane Big Time. I agree with everything Skill Up said here. On Next gen or PC it looks amazing.
I really hope this does well in terms of sales so that square enix's executives will cut down on live service and focus on singleplayers.
If they do it, then it will be a first step.
Yeah nah this game still won't make the amount of money marvel avengers is making even though it's more quality
@@DillPickl3_ Avengers has lost quite a bit of money: if this literally makes ANY, it'll be ahead of the game (so to speak).
Also, this game was made by Eidos Montreal. They decided to go with a 4 day, 32 hour work week. So this game, presumably, was made without crunch. Compare that with Crystal Dynamics, where they crunched their employees to the bone in order to shit out a bad game (Crystal Dynamics held a raffle for people who decided to stay and get crunched. I doubt the prizes are worth it.)
We might have to let our wallets speak for all of us on this one
I was expecting this game to suck, but ur review might have just convinced me to pick it up, a good 15-20 hour story driven game is rare in a sea of open world grindfests and live service titles, and just what I want right now

@@michaelmonstar4276 ok Michael.
My God, looking through the comments, I'm amazed at the number of absolute lemmings there are who follow this channel. I've already read several comments like this one, saying, "oh, thanks for the review, Ralph! I'm so glad the game is good!" and not, "I'm glad YOU THINK the game is good, Ralph! I hope you're right. Maybe I'll consider getting it."" It's as if you people think the game has been confirmed to be objectively good just because Ralph says it is. Jesus, form your own opinions, FFS. The combat in this game looks like utter shit. You know that if Ralph had instead focused on that and made the video about the banal simplicity of the combat, your comment would instead be, "oH gEeZ, tHaNkS fOr sAvInG mE sOmE tImE aNd mOnEy, rAlPh!" and everyone in the comments would be agreeing that the game looks like just another piece of garbage cash grab. Pathetic.
@@kwisclubta7175 Not trying to start a heated discussion here, but...
Yes, while everything is subjective and people tend to take some opinions as objective truths, it still depends on the situation. A lot of people can't just buy whatever game they feel even remotely interested in. That's what reviews are for, in my opinion: see what the general consensus of a game is, while also listening/reading about the features which you can judge by yourself.
@@ender4101 Not sure why this would be a heated discussion. There's not much that I've said here that is debatable, nor does it conflict with anything you've said. The fact that people are commenting, "I'm so glad this game is good!" when they haven't even played the game to make that determination for themselves says it all. They have deemed the game good, not based on their own experience with it, but based solely on the opinion of someone else- and not even that of multiple people, but a single human being. I understand the value of watching reviews like this one and making more informed decisions about what games you want to ultimately spend your money on. Nothing at all wrong with listening to the opinions of others to decide whether or not a game might be worth your time and money. That's not the issue. My point is that people don't simply form their own opinions. There's no situation in which one would be justified in proclaiming a thing to be good or bad based solely on the opinion of someone else. I have zero problem with someone saying that Ralph's review made them want to buy the game. I don't care if someone thinks it looks good even if I think the combat looks like it's shit. THE problem is people saying, "Ralph says the game is good? Oh what a relief the game is good! I was afraid it would be bad but it's not bad, it's good!" Not sure what there is to disagree with here but oh well.
I'm so glad you mentioned the facial motion capture and lip sync! No other review has and I totally agree that it could be the best ever seen. The minute detail in the movements of the models when talking is astounding.
I really hope this games success somehow increases the chances of us getting a new Deus Ex game from Eidos Montreal.
Yes please
It's likely... If enough people support and especially finance this, Squenix might just stick to their singleplayer games, like Tomb Raider and Deus Ex, instead of trying to copy other companies because of the billions. - Then again, it's probably too tempting to not try anyway. - But they could still do both, they just have to do it right.
Fuck yes, please. The last one was dreadfully boring with the worst MTX shop i've seen in the release year of the game.
Absolutely!
Don't do that ... Don't give me hope
I appreciate how much more specific the performance and optimization analysis is in this review. In some of Skill Up’s other reviews, I felt like I had little idea of how the game performs. Including framerate numbers and graphics settings other than “Ultra” is super helpful
He seems to only source the benchmarking tool, which is waaay inaccurate. I get minimum 60 in the benchmark, but in game i get more like 45-50

Oh God now I'm imagining you saying mate....don't do it joker...DONT DO IIIITTTTT?
I would have expected someone as thorough as Skillup to have mentioned the scripting BS that is the escape the quarantine zone in the lil getaway plane you showed. As this is totally scripted and you don't/can't even fly the actual plane, it's virtually an on the rails cut scene.....you can't CRASH because you're not even flying. This game is pretty much an interactive movie (tell tale style) with some terrible gameplay mechanics.

@@jasontodd1226 Kena is pretty new and is still pretty indie despite delivering a very good experience.
and I probably shouldve been more specific, I just meant it felt like they were dying down, with stuff like mankind devided , Dishonored 2 , the latest tomb raider , and stuff like that being either financial failures or not being as big of a thing in news and hype as their earlier iterations were.
and as much as I like RE8 it just wasnt a thing that popped up when I thought about this kind of game. with the whole pacing of the gameplay being much more reminicent of old PS2 era RE games rather than the AAA movie-like games of around 2010
@@jasontodd1226 My opinion, but I think Resident Evil Village is bad. I only liked the last part of that game in the factory.
I suggest watching Under The Mayo's review of that game because he'll explain it better than I ever could.
@@jasontodd1226 Kena is not made from triple A devs, but I understand why you think that. The game is definitely a triple A quality game despite not being one.
Honestly, if playing only as Star-Lord has saved this game from being a live service game, I'm totally fine with it. I think that having more playable characters would have encouraged the publishers to try the Avengers formula again, especially since development in this Guardians game probably began way before Avengers was released. If the game is as you've described, it has a solid foundation for sequels that can improve upon it and that are also set up to be single player campaigns with no microtransactions.
In Mass Effect (which Guardians was compared to) we also only control Shepard and only get to order the other characters around, I see no problem with that system.
Funny thing though is that I remember people complaining about the constant need to switch characters in FF7 Remake, that's quite interesting.
@@AscendantStoic yup. A lot of ME DNA in this game. And Star Lord is like Shephard is Shep sucked… in a good way. Star Lord can’t tank his way through the game. He isn’t strong enough to do it without his crew. So, his super power becomes being able to command this team of hooligans.
And really, it would be weird if Drax or Rocket were in charge.
I hope this game gets the FF XV treatment. At launch, you can only control Noctis and you just command your other team members. After a few updates, they let you swap between characters, and this mechanic carried over to FF 7 Remake.
Your quickly becoming my go to review channel, in depth without spoiling things and able to answer the key questions most gamers will have especially on this game which after watching this review I think I’m going to have to pick up. How the **** the games industry thought Solo games were dead a few years ago and started on the whole open world only thing was a bit baffling and I am more than happy that outside Sonys studios we have the hint of a return of some great experiences and I hope if Marvel games is what the Eidos Montreal team are on now at Square that they are allowed the free reigns to do them like THIS!
I've figured it out, why I love your current flavor of review styles.

It's worth every cent asked for it IMO.
I pre-ordered a Cosmic Deluxe edition in the hopes this game would be worthy of my GotG love & even made plans for an extended weekend. Happy to hear I won't be disappointed this time around by a hyped title that falls flat. Thanks Skill Up.
Hope you enjoy tell tale games. That's about all this game is mate. The scene shown where they escape the quarantine zone with haste, in the small craft....is an on the rails scripted event. You can't crash because you're not actually controlling the ship. That plus the many QTEs.....hmmm now knowing this...well a game I'll hold off on personally. I hope you enjoy it though.
I said "what?!" to myself, out loud, in an empty room, just at the title lol. I'm absolutely a visual person and would love to unleash my pc on this, I hadn't even watched a trailer before. The combat does look real bullet spongey, but maybe that damage option in the difficulty will help, and focusing more on team abilities.

@@titularhero true, spoil isn’t the right word, it’s moreso like explaining the experience and the flow of the game in general. The facial expressions are so on point that i forget its a video game for brief moments. Very impressive
I played this game pretty late, but I am so glad that I played it.
It is easily one of the best games ever made. I felt the emotion of every scene. The combat made me feel like a badass when I executed things right. Music is absolutely amazing. Visuals and sound design are so good the I actually thought some sounds were real.
And the biggest way for me to describe how highly I put up the writing is to reference the rocket and quill fight. Early on in the game when rocket and quill get into a fight I thought it was so annoying that it had ruined the story for me. And then as the story went on the game actually made it better. They stopped fighting, but it took time for that to happen. It wasn’t just a single scene where they make up. The whole game is so good that I almost hate how good it is because there should be other games as good. It’s a AAA studio and not an indie dev who made a game that is full of story and is actually good.
(Also Cozmo is still best boy)
After years or watching your reviews I just have to say, you're a master at your craft sir. Thanks to you I'll be picking this up tomorrow. 😁
I still remember when Gears of War 2 was touted as having an "... amazing !!7 Hour!! campaign".
EDIT: I've checked the info and the base campaign is listed as taking 10 hours to finish, so yes that was a mistake on my part.
The point I was trying to make though was the question of whether or not people would be happy paying $60 for 'only' 15 to 20 hours. Clearly it's not a problem when the hours spent, however many, are enjoyed in a good game.
7 hours? Maybe on es if you rush it as crazy, but the game was and is huge
ahh yes the classic quantity over quality mindset... that definetely turned out well for the costumer /s
That shit was way longer than 7hrs lol

Ralph, I was so waiting for you, to review this. Excellent review and just know that the effort, research, writeup and etc you did for all reviews are truly appreciated on this end.
Picked this up after it won best story at the Game Awards. Just finished it, and im blown away. They nail the look, feel, and sound of Guardians of the Galaxy.
Combat was a lot more fun than I expected, and i loved the use of different characters to unlock different things in the environment.
And the writing was superb. I found myself just hanging around the Milano just to listen to the different conversations between the team members.
This quickly shot up into my top 5 games of the year. So glad I gave this a chance despite being unimpressed by the pre release footage.
Time to get the rest of the trophies!
I'm so glad there's a variety of difficulty options because the game felt GREAT with the player damage turned up. It still felt like the focus of the game was using your team synergy, but once you synergized well you could actually do damage in combat.
I'm surprised this game ended up being decent, though I'm still mad we got this game instead of a new Deus Ex from Eidos...
At this point, I am glad there is a ridiculously fun game like this with some clear Deus Ex DNA.
Some top notch alliteration makes reviews better:) I will check this out for sure, it’s what I enjoy most beyond retro games and rpg’s
So...Many colours! I'm in love with the visual design. These sorts of games rarely make it onto my radar, but WOW.
As sad as I am that they’re not working on Deus Ex, this game is truly a joy and I’m excited to see what else Eidos has in store for us.
Great review of this game I am LOVING. I was honestly a little worried I had lost my mind thinking this game was so great with the Avengers dumpster fire still tormenting me with the promise of good Marvel games. I actually think this game is BETTER than the Guardians movies, and can unashamedly stand next to PS4 Spider-man as one of the best Marvel games of all time. I wish we could have this great of a game for some of my other beloved MCU/Marvel characters (*cough* Iron Man or Capt. America *cough*).
Overall it is just great to play a VIDEO GAME instead of an advertisement. I hope we get more games like this as well!
Thanks for the great review!!!
I've been craving a revisit to the Mass Effect series lately and had no idea that this one would turn out decent. Happiest news of the day and can't wait to check this out now!
I just finished the trilogy with Legendary Edition (worth it).
And this really is like a more condensed Mass Effect. ME without the side missions, and with AAA graphics.
I just love your reviews. There's just so much passion behind them. I can really tell you love gaming and it shows in your reviews. You've become my favorite reviewer. Keep up the fantastic work.
Yeeeeeeeeessss! Finally a game that I am looking forward to play that has the SkillUp' Seal of Approval.
Dont be fooled just watch it on CZcams you can only play as starlord who has pistols and xray vision not worth the full Price
@@chalicek77 In your opinion
Cyberpunk did deliver to
@ashy but theyre okay with one boring playable character so theyre lying to people
@@chalicek77 bruh you don't even play the game yet. Game is meant to be taken as a whole not just one portion of it. We better takes Skill Share words over you which is a nobody in the review industry.
I am relieved that the story is enjoyable .
Love how Gamora looks in the game
You might not agree but she’s giving me Kristen Stewart vibes
@@samuelgonzalez-tovar3936 Maybe so
This review is fantastic! Highlighting all the advances settings is a great touch, very much appreciated
Skillup, your my most trusted and favorite game reviewer. A few years ago after finding your channel I noticed how similar we are in our thoughts and feelings towards games. So i felt it was a safe bet to take your word on your recommendations for wether a game is one i should play/buy or wait til its free or never play. You’ve ALWAYS been spot on. EVERY game youve told us to play, i got and loved it. Spiderman, ace combat, god of war to name of a few. As soon as i saw the title to this video i got very excited, new game for me to play! Thanks skillup.
Chilllllllll, love a good skill up vid to start the morning
man i was hoping this game would turn out great and i am so happy it did. Thank you so much for your service SkillUp
Thank you Skill, its been an honor watching and listening to your review. Much appreciated!
WOW what a review! Everything I wanted to know and then some! Subbed💪👍
Wow, I was NOT expecting a reccomendation from you! I'm DEFINITELY getting this now!
Skill up the video game that you recommend are amazing thank you for reviewing all of the games, like you're the best CZcamsr reviewer I ever watch keep up the good work
best reviews ive seen to date. Literally everything i wondered about was included! You got my sub
So glad this is good, thought it would be entierly a visual spectacle after Avengers, but glad to see that's not the case. Awesome review thanks mate.
Wow. I was really not expecting this to be good. Thats a nice surprise
“Nothing goes over my head. I’m too fast…..I would catch it.”
The second I became obsessed with GOG.
Excited to pick this up tomorrow. Awesome review, had zero hope for this game but you changed my mind!
Fantastic, in-depth review. Covers everything you’d want to know; especially performance and bugs which are very important to know. Definitely picking this up! Thank you 🙂
I'm very excited to play this game tomorrow, as always love your review Skill Up, they're always so well written and informative!
Keep doing your thing man. Also, just received my Skill Up sweatshirt, fits great. Gotta rep
Peter’s guns have a learning curve I’m surprised not many reviewers are picking up on this. But they can deliver massive amounts of damage if you play them right. The game rewards you if you stun enemies with the elemental gun or are right in their face. Also you have combat finishers and team ups. So it rewards a tactical run and gun style.
Also you build momentum with certain actions which leads to high crits. Also the huddle ups aren’t on any time and act as a “ultimate move/power-buff” and it’s really great imo and most ppl who’ve mentioned this enjoy it.
This a a really good review video. Definitely subscribing to this channel. Side note. Wth are these character models lol
So glad to hear this. This game looks amazing and looks like a good time 🔥
I've finally started this since it's hit Game Pass, and I am absolutely wowed. I'll be buying a copy for myself soon. This could easily have been a cheap cash-in on a popular property, but it's evident mere minutes in that this was a game built with a ton of passion from its developers.
I love advanced difficulty options! Sometimes one setting is slightly too hard and the other is slightly too easy, this really lets us tailor the experience. I wish more games had difficulty settings like in the Pathfinder games but I know that's a big ask lol.
Glad to hear you like it Ralph, kept my expectations low for this one. Might have to pick it up 👍
I feel like we can see how amazing The Ascent would be in third person. Still a great game as it is, but a sequel would look beautiful in this view
A non mtx fueled, non live service scifi game with full rtx, insane cast and mocap set in my favourite movie series ever? This may just be my personal goty.
Really glad you love it! I will definietly buy it in the near future
Looking forward to picking this up
Man, you're good. Just when I was thinking "should I buy it or not" and couldn't find the definitive way to agree with myself.
So $60 is considered too high for 15-18 hours of entertainment nowadays? What? If it was 4-6, yeah, I get it, but 15 hours for 60 is pretty decent. Not all games need to be 200 hours+
So tired of this nonsense from people. If they want bloated games just go play a ubisoft title.
@@Regnier575 Yeah, as I've gotten older I've come to really appreciate the 15-25 hour game that lets me get in, experience a good story and get out.
@@Scoutzknives Same here
Looks like this game has a creative direction, with is a huge step in any creative work (movies, books, etc..) it knows what it wants to be, Crystal Dynamics did that with Tomb Raider's games but I think that with Avengers they messed up badly, like they wanted to please everyone and at the end they pleased no one, amazing review as always btw.
Thanks for the review; the Guardians are my favorite MCU characters and seing them in a videao game is great (I actually think this "version" of them looks even cooler then the movie one, esp Drax and Gamorrah). Will definately get this next year when I got a new PC
I absolutely love this game, I just beat it and it is such a beautiful experience. I hoped it would be just like this. I could go on and on about the environment, how the characters feel like a family and how much I love character interaction in video games, how they communicate about upgrades, experiences on the ship and the continuity of your choices . like this blows me away. i loved this video capturing all my love for it . I really loved hanging out with these characters every time after missions, during missions and ughhh 😭 I love Gamoras heartfelt moment as well as Drax’s, the fucking visuals I stayed looking at the “edge of the universe” for ever. Man i loved every character.
oh and ya gotta get the combat down bud it’s amazing .
edit: especially the detail that characters start doing things without you asking because you build that relationship . The random Wendigo cameo and I haven’t seen that character since wolverine on PS2 got me SO EXCITED. the damn visit to LAMENTIS after being so into it on Loki? yes best looking game of the year & holy shit this GOTY for me , I loved it more than Spider-Man and that’s my favorite character :/ haha
Good to see a positively reviewed marvel game. Let's hope they can keep it up
I wouldn't mind a Deadpool game of half that quality. I already liked the first one so I'm not even hard to please.
Spiderman?! Spider man miles one?!
Spiderman ?
@@Texelion3Dprints I bet it wouldn't take much to get Ryan Reynolds on board, given how much he loves being Deadpool.
I cannot believe how much love (and money) they spend in the artwork, the dialogues, the story, the score - it is as you said: it‘s more like a 20h-lasting movie, and I enjoyed every single minute! It was worth every Cent of my 70€.
Thank you for drawing my attention to this - I was totally surprised by this title and considering the Avengers-Game I was convinced this one must be crap, too.
Yep, a great game!
bro I love the huddles
Skill Up's here praising the graphics and artistic decisions and stuff and I'm like "Holy crap! Peter has a poster of Dazzler in his quarters!"
Just finished it... It definitely left an impression, this is exactly the kind of game I needed. I can't stand how everything is made into live-service nowadays, it just feels good to play a game that isn't stretched out to hell, doesn't drool after my wallet after purchase and is actually fun.
Definitely about to purchase this today. I trust your recommendations you’re most definitely fair. 💯❤️😘
i cant believe its out today....thats why i love when theres a steady stream of games coming... games youve been looking forward to just sneak up on you..
