10-4 will do.....One of the most important items you speak of is SAFETY. Yes, primers are what will cause an accident, if its going to happen, it will be with primers.

A Couple items:
1. First, great video
2. I find I get the largest variance of powder throws when a) running stick powders or b) sizing brass while charging.
3. setting the press up to click as you have stated fixes 98% of these problems. But sometimes, the throw becomes irregular (cutting stick powder, or a little sticky with the sizing). What I have found remarkably helpful (especially with stick powders) is attaching a aquarium air pump to the side of the hopper. What this does is keeps a consistent vibration which consolidates the powder evenly, even if I'm not doing my job. Looks little crazy but the results are better especially when combining irregular cycles during production.
Let me know your thoughts. I'm watching these to solve my powder "jumping" out of the cases as the shell plate indexes with the detents. No matter what I do I cannot control it.

I used a shim pack to pull out some of the play of my shell plate, then I place a bit of grease on the ball detent zirks. I also used a punch to seat the detents slightly in to prevent a severe snap.
Bill, Thanks a ton on your videos, you now have me trusting the primer feed, and my shell plate no longer gives me trouble. I've not looked at all your videos but one problem I fixed you might add is the ratching of my shell plate gave me trouble. it was over rotating the plate and misaligning to the dies and primer feed. Again thanks for all your help.

Great video, my only issue is with your Hornady GS-1500 scale. If that is the GS-1500 scale( and it looks like it), it is only accurate to +/- .2 , so that is not very accurate. I'd be interested to see the results from a better electronic scale or beam scale. I had the GS-1500 and sent it back because because mine never showed odd numbers. Even if I was looking for 7.1 grains, it would show 7.0 or 7.2 grains.
You are exactly right. I do mention that in quite a few videos where I use the GS-1500. For me personally I prefer the beam type scale but one day might step up to a digital scale. Thanks for the comment and I hope to chat some more. Highboy
I was having issues with my powder drop (it's a pacific, which is early Hornady) I realized that I had rifle rotor in it. I don't have a pistol rotor for it. Now I know why...thanks Cmax

I have never had issue with that but I only do pistol on the progressive. I will be running my .223 on it and will find out then. The only way to know is to visually check it and then measure it with calipers. Highboy
Highboy some very good tips I always re-insert powder gasket back in cover I also write down when was opened I have some powder that's over 25 years old and still goes bang Power pistol is my newest powder working on some loads with it waiting to get Hodgdon C.F.E. pistol thanks for taking your time to make great videos

Hello Bill, great video series!....I had a Dillon in the 80's, sold it, moved to florida and now grandkids want to shoot. I just got the LNL classic and the LNL ap. I am just about to set them up and wondering what model of RCBS(green) bench mount you have on your non-progressive powder measure. I will be loading trays of 223/556 and like how much room you have under it. Again, thanks for the great videos.....Oh went to HF today and got the O-ring set.....thanks

You mentioned frequent temperature changes are bad for powder, what about humidity? I plan on reloading in my basement, but it is a little humid down there. My basement is too large to practically seal, so what humidity is acceptable for powder? Should I invest in a dehumidifier? Thanks for these videos, they've really helped me to look forward to start reloading.

Thanks for the question. The tempered glass is not needed but what I have found is it keeps the scales zeroed out better. Because it is perfectly smooth and has no grain to it the scales stay settled to zero better. Also, if you need to slide the scale around a bit they will hold zero with little loss of zero. Jim, I really appreciate all the videos. I'm trying to get a consistent powder throw with the AP. I am throwing the arm the same each time using IMR 4831 and then weighing it on my beam scale. Unfortunately it is always a little different. Any suggestions?

Thanks Highboy. I have had a couple of small problems since I've had the press. 1
being that I was using the 9mm powder through expander and it occasionally
cut the side it off my brass so I have gone back to the standard expander
and powder drop. Your tip with the shell plate may fix this problem. I like
the O ring and graphite priming tips as well. I also have the stand alone
powder drop that I use for rifle loading, have you had problems with the
stick powders such as reloader 15 and varget jamming the rotor and cutting
the powder? How did fix this problem?

Have you considered or do you recommend throwing in one of those little desiccant packages in with the powder when storing opened containers or the powder hopper to absorb humidity?
+Jetta Red No, I do not recommend that at all. One thing that, IMO, for some reason people worry about is powder going bad. I have powder over 20 years old and it is still fine. The desiccant packets you speak of could very well come apart and contaminate the powder. Nothing should ever touch the powder and that is reloading 101. very good question and welcome to my channel. The plastic tube one time came loose and spilled all the powder out. What a mess. So I drill 2 holes on the metal thru to the plastic and tapped the metal and put in two #6 screws on opposite sides. Now the plastic tube doesn't come loose on the shaking up and down motion.

When you top out the powder measure throw and hear the click, that distance was set by the length of the brass. I imagine pistol brass changes in OAL is minimal so the impact to the brass lip is nill. But with rifle, and the bit larger variances in the OAL, would that effect the lip of the brass so the expander amount would vary more so?
Since the powder is measured in the down position I wouldn't think the OAL would change the amount of powder, OAL if way off could keep the powder from dropping into the case, but I would think it would have to be way off to not drop the powder into the case.

IMO the up-travel of the brass and loading of the powder is dictated by the "Clicking" of the metering insert hitting the powder measure body. So even if there were significant "Trim Length" differences it still would not affect the powder throw until the metering insert no longer "Clicked" at the top (then it is no longer a powder accuracy issue, rather it would be a re-loader error). Then, on the down travel of the powdered brass each piece drops down out of position allowing for the full powder charge to drop and that "Clicking" stays the same with no affect from a variance in trim length.
Summed up: IMO, the brass really offers no consistency change in the powder throw.

How do you keep static out of the powder meter? I have a lot of powder that sticks in the powder meter and hopper.
I would say give Hornady a call. Highboy
sherm dog, wipe out your powder measure with a dryer softener sheet. Between loading sessions, store the dryer softener sheet inside the powder hopper tube.

Am having a problem with overall length, loading my last batch of 45 colt my overall length was out of wack. About half would be too long, Am using lee seating die and a lee crimp die. I am thinkink my shell plate is coming loose, any other possibilities?
What is the difference in length from longest to shortest? Highboy
@76Highboy I don't remember but it was quite a bit for some rounds, I would run them through again and it would fix about half then run through again those not in spec, sometimes would run it through a forth or 5th time.

I should have said several batches of 50, usually reset dies between batches. But still same issue.

That is not a stupid question. It is because it is perfectly smooth and the scale will hold zero much better. Once you get a piece of glass you will never be without it. Especially with the beam type scale. The adjustment screw tends to fall into the grain of the bench but with the glass it is perfectly smooth. Thanks for commenting and feel free to jump in anytime. First their support is Excellent!
Why is it when I make a round that about 20 out of 100 are ok? Without changing anything and the plate secured with a lock washer the Length and crimp will vary. Sometimes the bullet can be pushed down with my finger and some are good and tight. Sometimes the Length is 1.090 and perfect. Sometimes the Length is 1.068 or 1.103 and the crimp is still tight. Most of the time the crimp is not tight.Why all the variations? Hornady has been telling me to use the seating die that you can put a Micrometer on which I think is a rolled crimp. Then last week they said that was wrong and use the Tapered crimp which you cannot put a Micrometer on and only says 380 - 9 Auto on top.
