One thing I always loved about this scene is how Nikolai leaves at the end in a somewhat hurried fashion. Not that he's truly afraid, but his gait and demeanor implies that his encounter with McCall unsettled him a little. It correlates with his verbal assessment later in the car: "everything about him is _wrong."_ It says that even he wasn't expecting to find a cold, calculating, fearless avatar of death when he knocked on that door.

Run away from knives and blunt objects and towards the guy wielding a gun. That's what experts say if faced with confrontation. The gun in close quarters is hard to aim, esp if you're able to deflect the arms. A knife can do damage ONLY when close, except if you're dealing with throwing knives and an expert at using them. Any way...I wrestled a drunk guy who was menacing people with a pair of sharp pointed scissors. My shirt got a few holes in it in the process.

Not only did Denzel's character step towards him, he stepped outside of his apartment. He willingly left his "comfort zone" to confront the other man. That in itself shows how confident he was. Most people when faced with a potentially dangerous situation would tend to hide or step behind their door and remain in their home. He did exactly the opposite of what the other man expected. That is what probably threw him off his game, and why he left in such a hurry soon afterwards. He even admitted it when he said in the car, "Everything about him is wrong."

This scene is no less than a masterpiece. Detailing is so intense and great.
    - Mr. Mcall opening the door, like he knew, someone's coming for him and he has to deal with it.
    - They both looking at each other from head to toe.
    - Teddy stays in shadow (evil) while Mcall in light (good).
    - Teddy showing him that girl's pic, just to let him that what he's capable of? and Mcall did not even show any sign of fear but he is having that constant smile on his face.
    - You gonna see some real sort of confidence in their body language and communication, both are pros.
    - the way Mcall step up and look at him in the eyes, just to let him know, that bring it on, he's not an oridinary dude and they (Teddy and his crew) have no idea who they dealing with.
    - Don't you wanna leave me your card? To tell him, that he knows the protocols.

_Teddy showing him that girl's pic, just to let him that what he's capable of? and Mcall did not even show any sign of fear but he is having that constant smile on his face_
TBH this was also because Teddy wanted to test Mcall or bait some sorta reaction from him because Teddy knew that Mcall and this girl had met and he had helped her or at least tried to. So it was very much a game of minds (psychologically) and not just them squaring up against each other to assert dominance at the top of the stairs.
It wasnt so much a _"Look what i can do..."_ but _"Look what i did to someone you cared about..."_ Teddy was also there on a reconnaissance mission to find out more about the kind of person Mcall was dont forget. Hence the scene at the end when Teddy gets back into the car and says "Everything about him is wrong"

And Robert instantly went into "feel this guy out" mode. Admitted to what he knew Teddy wanted him to deny to see how he would handle it. And then when he's walking away, calls him back to let him know he knows he's not a real detective.

You do not understand that at this level, Nocolai was already persuading in his mind that Robert was the man he was looking for. He just wanted confirmation by going into the field. And seeing from the front who he was dealing with. That is why he was so careless in these statements. And it is because Robert knew that Nicolai had already discovered it that he wanted to let him know by provoking him with police ID. This verbal confrontation was just a "You know who I am and I know who you are"

To emphasize what ndong already said: these two already knew they weren’t who they were pretending to be. Nikolai’s whole “police investigator” act was purposefully transparent. It’s a power move. He already assumed he wouldn’t be able to trick McCall, so he’s putting his own face on McCall’s doorstep to say “two can play this game.”
In short, he went there to size up his opponent in person, and found that he was very evenly matched.
