      That clearly shows that any main antagonist/lead villain has to be as good as protagonist/good guy and this is casting at its best and when I'd seen it in the cinema, I was found Nicolai/Teddy frightening indeed and it gave Robert McCall a challenge : Antoine Fuqua deserves credit for a big screen adaptation of an 80's TV series and thanks to the success of this and equally good 2018 movie, a recently announced third episode is in the works - 👍!.

The confidence of Nikolai slowly being taken away by Robert….wearing all black staring at him with his black eyes….revealing his life story but remaining a mystery…then he drops the line in Russian…solidifying that you are messing with a killer and I haven’t even really got started. Robert is in zero fear of Nikolai and now he’s letting him know that it’s over….and Nikolai still wondering…..who the hell is this guy….

    I just realized what the implications of that last line are. Nikolai asks "what do you see when you look at me?" and McCall tells him his own life's story in response. The hidden conversation in this is "do you know who you're dealing with?" and the response is "yes, I've done my research."
    At the end, McCall gives Nikolai time to make his choice, leaving a phone number with which to contact him when he's ready. It's already fairly clear Nikolai isn't about to take McCall's "offer" seriously, and so that's why McCall turns Nikolai's own question back on him: "what do you see when you look at me?" He's asking him "do _you_ know who you're dealing with?" with the implication that if Nikolai really _does_ know, he should take McCall's "offer" far more seriously.
    That's brilliant screenwriting right there.

      It's Marton's acting in this piece which fascinates me so much more than Denzel's. McCall is basically just a fantasy-fulfilment persona, fun to watch but not intrinsically interesting. But Teddy has all these layers. That gleam of polish and self-assurance. The visible outline of calculated, sociopathic brutality lurking just beneath. But then the way he begins to show that that too is just a mask, and what you glimpse underneath is the wreckage of a profoundly damaged and malformed psyche. Teddy's a monster, but he's still a more convincing human than McCall.

    • @theprogram863
      @theprogram863 Před 2 lety +89

      The actor and director had a very narrow line to walk here. If Teddy's expressions had been too overt, then he's no longer believable as a dangerous, sociopathic russian mobster. If his expressions had been too blank, then the scene loses the emotional payoff and you're left wondering whether or not the boy in McCall's story really was Teddy. Marton chose to play his character not showing much, but visibly trying to avoid showing his emotional reaction, which tells you that there was one. The director kept using those very, very close shots of Teddy's face. He was inviting you to try to read Teddy's expressions, which kept you watching for them and knowing they were there.
      It took me several re-watches to notice this, but watch the brandy snifter. Teddy uses it to hide his facial expressions when his control starts to slip. Early on, when he realized the story McCall was telling, he started to lift the glass to his face but then McCall said "stop me if you've heard this one" and Teddy visibly stopped himself from shielding himself with the glass (probably realizing it's such a tell) and instead calmly asked McCall to continue. Then, at 2:13, as McCall talks about the murder of the adoptive father, it's too much and Teddy raises his glass again and takes a long sip. He's acting casual and deadpan, but it's really a defensive move, he's hiding his face behind the brandy snifter so McCall won't see his reaction.
      I think they realized that the viewer didn't need to see what expression Teddy was hiding. If you see that he's hiding his reaction, then you know that he's reacting to McCall's story. At that point, if you see he's having a reaction strong enough that he's losing his poker face, then you don't need to see the reaction itself to have a pretty good idea of what he's feeling and why.
      Kudos to the director for not hitting us over the head with all this. Even if you don't reason the whole thing out in so many words (I didn't), you don't need to to get the general sense that McCall's got Teddy rattled.

      I think the story is not only a way to say that the little boy grew up to become Teddy but to attack Teddy psychologically.
      Teddy says that “You think you know me”
      McCall does know him. McCall is still a mystery in this film. Teddy pretty much has been singled out.
      That’s why this scene is interesting. It shows one side knows more than the other and that’s an advantage when it comes to the final confrontation.

      Brilliant directing, too! The writing/acting was good but a lot of what made this scene was the director knowing how to present it to the audience. Lots of little details, for example, the close shots of Teddy's face (inviting the viewer to try to read his expressions, which delivered a boatload of subtext). Watch Teddy use the brandy snifter at key moments to hide his face during McCall's story. He didn't beat you over the head with it, but there was a strong emotional undercurrent going alongside Denzel's monologue.
      The Marton Czokas was the real win in terms of casting. Denzel Washington is one of the great film actors of all time, but as a casting decision, that means it's kind of a no brainer that you want him starring in your film. He was brilliant here, too. Czokas has been around the block but I don't think anybody anticipated that he would be quite this good. THAT was brilliant casting, seeing something in him that we hadn't seen and didn't anticipate.

    The intense yet subtle power of this scene gets missed at first viewing to many. I didn't realize just how strong of a statement he makes. Denzel basically walks in, and tells this man he not only knows his name (he never gives it to him yet he knows) and proceeds to lay out his life story before him as if it were some fable. It shows him that he's messing with the wrong guy in such a powerful way that you may not realize at first unless you were the actual character sitting across from him here. To have a total stranger come up to you and lay out your life story, speak your language, and be that calm about it... Wow is that not terrifying to receive?

    This film is a great example of what can be done with a crime/action/drama if you have the right ingredients--two high-caliber actors, in particular, plus a decent script, stylish direction and cinematography. Denzel Washington is at the top of his game in this role, particularly in the first film. But it helps to have a strong, complex villain for a film like this to be successful, and the actor playing this brutal but intelligent Russian thug is excellent. He and Denzel Washington make the dramatic tension in the movie work so well.
