  • Being Batman is all fun and games until you ask: Who is paying for all this? But when you get down to it, paying out of pocket to be Batman isn't that big of a deal for Bruce Wayne.

This is actually why The Penguin and Two Face tend to be important villians in the Batman Mythos, as they represent political corruption. Sure Bruce Wayne can (And does) donate money to solve the cities various problems, but that money is than stolen by corrupt officials. This was literally the main plot of the last Batman film.

When I was living in LA I vote on a bill in 2016 that would give 1 billion to help the homeless find homes. Come to find out there where 100's of people who worked for "non-profits" that made $250k a year from the "non-profits" that just ate through that money. The homeless received little to no benefit from that one billion. My tax dollars at work. Payed 100's of people $250k a year to distribute what little money was left over after they took there salaries out of it.

In the comics, he tried multiple times to donate his way to saving Gotham and even financing "good politicians" it never worked. Either because other rich people were financing the Crime (Court of Owls) or these good politicians ended up being corrupted. People forget his enemies are also just as resourceful and or straight-out insane. Also Bane and League of Shadows aren't even from Gotham so no amount of him investing in Gotham would have prevented them from doing evil.

It’s a fun calculation, but I find the analysis a little short sighted. The handwaving of what the Wayne Foundation and what Bruce personally does outside of the cape shows that they haven’t read the material. He considers it half of his job, and multiple times the philanthropic efforts of his family were shown to be ineffective by themselves because of the level of corruption. Read No Man’s Land, the Court of Owls or watch the Batman. Batman exists because he has to (in universe). He still spends close to half his waking hours with that part of his persona’s work (humanitarianism).
And as Bruce and Batman, he is literally holding the infrastructure of the city together. Like, the power grid is failing and he’s going in regularly and doing emergency patches to keep people’s heat on.
The war on crime isn’t against street level crime, it’s against the mob. It’s against a conspiracy that is keeping Gotham sick for its own ends and profits. Throwing money at infrastructure will end up in their hands without Batman.

The thing about investing in civic institutions is only said by people who don't pay any attention. Bruce Wayne is ALWAYS at a non-profit fundraiser with all key members of the govt and his business is critical to the local economy and jobs. He punches criminals in his spare time to vent his frustrations, but if you don't think Wayne invests in civic institutions you should try watching one of the TV shows or movies. He flippantly tells his butler to give a reporter a grant. There is an entire Wayne Foundation funding civic institutions.

Ok, i really like this breakdown of his net worth, its probably the best I've ever seen. That said, it just falls back into the same tired "you can fix problems with money" diatribe rather than acknowledging you cant just throw money into a corrupt system. You just empower and incentivise those preying on the less fortunate. And we see examples of it time and time again in that universe. It's a heck of a lot more complicated than it is here, and that's why he Batmans... He's trying to remove the tumor first so that other methods of treatment can start to work, and he's not even sure if it's possible, but he'll risk his life to try anyway.
That said, i liked this 👍

It's not one rich person's responsibility to fund the cities issues. He focuses on crime, like real crime, not the crime of being homeless in a big ass city. He's tried to fund projects etc, but the greedy always take the money. He does still fund many projects that benefit the poor and vulnerable, not just in Gotham, but around the world as well.
With regards to his home, it was inherited and passed down through his family for generations. He had no say in how it was built and obviously keeps the decor as is due to the death of his parents.
Sounds to me like your "cracked" team of researchers need to do a better job of even skimming the details. Really went down the shitter after the whole crew (Michael, Soren, Daniel etc and the other writers) left. All the charisma and wit is gone and cracked is left with garbage.

  • @Corey.Coolidge

The comics have tried to cover the fact that Bruce Wayne invests in many charities and sometimes they come into play, but we don't see them because watching/reading/listening to a rich person devote themself to charity isn't a fun story with colorful villains.
    AND
In there are stories where corrupt governments and charity CEOs decide to embezzle money. Not to mention when super villains go out of their way to target good will projects so either keep their villainy in the shadows or to go after Bruce for some payback.
I'm so tired of hearing this "Batman should just do charity" argument. It's stupid, provably not true, and not in the spirit of Batman. If you hate Batman, stop talking about him, you don't have to do Batman stuff.

I think the arrangement that social spending would have made more sense only works if you start after he evolved over 75 years. In the beginning he didn't have a fraction of the high end tech. Over the years he has fought gods, demons, robots, and any number of metahumans. Gradually growing to face escalating threats has become the heart of the character. No amount of charities or local development was ever going to stop Darkseid or his army of parademons. Even if he could arm gothamites with world shattering arms they would have found their way into the hands of the corrupt regardless of any steps taken. Only ensuring the self destruction when the next threat showed up to threaten earth. Understandable position, but ultimately not the magic bullet that cracked has made a few times. If you remove Gotham from the rest of the D.C. universe it sounds more plausible. Just a much less interesting story. Batman wouldn't have made it 75 years if the comics were just some rich dude doing paperwork. I still enjoy your work at cracked

There is a massive difference between net worth and actual income. He would only have that ridiculous amount of money if he liquidated all his assets. He himself is absolutely probably a billionaire, but you also she how he uses his company to hide his bat related purchases, not spending much of that money himself which is much worse cause that’s a real-real crime called embezzlement.
His training was largely free, just a commitment to be a cults assassin, which he broke.
Using real life examples musk makes something akin to 54million a day before expenses. 648 million a year. Times that buy three and you get the more realistic estimate of Bruce’s annual salary of about 2 billion a year. Still very far from his 880 billion dollar net worth.

    _"He should solve homelessness."_
I spent ten years working alongside homeless charities that would not only provide free housing but also pay rent and provide necessities such as groceries (as you Americans would call it.)
So many of the people housed would destroy properties, defecate on the floor, leave uncapped syringes around the property etc to the point where they had to be evicted.
Homelessness cannot be solved from throwing money at it, there needs to be a motivation from the individual in question to live a different lifestyle.

Your video showcases your ignorance on the topic. Clearly you know just little enough about Batman to sound stupid. The point is Thomas Wayne tried to uplift the citizens of Gotham in exactly the manners that you are suggesting and guess what, he got murdered anyway. Even though the city was better off by far there still was criminality even with all of those plans in place. because Thomas Wayne felt exactly as you do. And Gotham was worse off when Thomas was no longer around to fund those programs. Bruce learned the hard way that that's not enough. Thus Bruce represents the stick (vrs his father, the carrot.) Now perhaps an argument could be made that the optimum solution is an adequate combination of the carrot and the stick and not one or the other... but your argument is just clueless!

    So yes… But also no
In the city of Los Angeles, it apparently costs us somewhere between 500,000 and over $1 million to provide just one place to live for a homeless person. It doesn’t need to cost that much, but between permits and everything else it cost a heck of a lot.
Additionally, general corruption both legal and illegal makes things cost significantly more and that’s just in Los Angeles. New York City, or Chicago, after which Gautam is modeled, have a reputation for even more corruption. The estimates that are given to solve the homeless crises does not take into account opportunist who insert themselves in between. That’s the reason why nearly every project that is done in a major city that would improve it ends up costing 2 to 10 times more than originally estimated.
So, city of New York says it would cost $2 billion to solve that homeless problem. We can assume that that would be 20 billion. Still affordable for one Bruce Wayne to be sure.
However, we have to take into account a few other things. Mostly, what are Bruce Wayne’s liquid assets?
most of his assets are in stock. Where he to sell enough to get $20 million, and let’s assume that he doesn’t try to avoid taxes but does things the normal way, then that means that’s $40 billion worth of shares right there, that now becomes about 5% of his net worth. Still affordable, but he hast to be careful because if he sells all from the same company, we could actually take the stock prices and cause loss of money in retirement accounts and other connected things like pay for certain employees.
We also don’t know whether he has any limitation on selling his stocks contractually. While he owns 51% of the shares, very often the SEC or the board of directors is involved in whether or not he can sell shares or not. But I think we can assume that his shares are vested in a way that he could at any point. That being said, we’ve seen timelines where when Bruce Wayne sells his shares, somebody much worse steps in and uses all the technologies and influence that when Enterprises has to cause far worse things. Bruce Wayne Hass to be careful about whether or not he gives up control of Wayne Enterprises. That being said though, there’s ample evidence in the comics of Bruce Wayne not being aware of just everything that’s happening in his company. This is a good argument for him to stop Batmanning, as he got more sleep and paid more attention, some of the various things happening under his roof might be stopped.
I don’t think it’s fair to count his property as something he can use to better the lot of Gotham city unless you’re suggesting he should sell it and live small. he could also donate it for some purpose of course, but there would be forces that would fight against him that even Batman couldn’t stop.
Going through that, the bottom line is it’s more difficult than you lay out here, but it certainly plausible that he could find the $40 billion necessary to ensure that a program could be created to deal with homelessness in Gotham city.
    For one year.
That’s the other problem with these plans, is that they don’t often have a long-term consideration. So it may very well be that that $2 billion the originally quoted is $2 billion per year, and if the launching of it is actually $20 billion, that means in order to have 50 years of properly dealing with the homeless using Bruce Wayne resources, you’re looking at $240 billion in order to cover the cost plus the taxes.
