The red evoking blood and fire does have an ominous feel to it. It certainly doesn't convey a sense of stability about the monarchy. When I saw it, I thought of the Hunger Games and the quote "if we burn, you burn with us." Typically a butterfly is symbolic of change and rebirth. To me the portrait feels like it's signaling the end of the monarchy.

The artist/painter knew what he was doing. It's quite a shocking portrait. Red surrounding Charles like flames. His face for all to see stood out. The butterfly on his shoulder reminding him of what he done to Diana. đ Oh yes!
I like it, and think it is technically very impressive. It has done a good job at provoking a wide reaction from the public and has created many more questions than it answers. It is many things at once: beautiful, shocking, calm, dangerous. It certainly canât be criticised for being a boring painting.
As an artist myself I might be interpreting this differently than intended! I don't know If the artist was trying to capture an expression of Compassion on his face, but what I am reading is weakness not compassion! Both in his face & posture! Which in my opinion is more honest and fitting when talking about Charles.
