1 hour video? I hope all of that work pays off. Watching it tomorrow for lunch
Cheers mate, hope you enjoy ^_^
Thankfully the video contains enough fascinating information all the way through and essentially is a great guided tour of the castle that we can all enjoy, that its enough to keep viewers engaged all the way through.
Thanks Shad. Love your content and your enthusiasm is infectious. Glad your channel is going strong and you seem well. Alot of us appreciate you and what you do and teach us.
I know an hour has passed, but it doesn't feel like it. It's a great way to spend a lunch.
@@shadiversity 56:00 was this bell system common or just for this castle or was it in castles of people that where ritch enough to afford such a luxury?
Now that he's been able to visit castles in person, Shad's excitement over machicolations has finally had a controlled release, as opposed to the build-up to an explosive cry of the word.
Shad's premature Machicolation 😁
MACHICOLATIONS !!
I'm sorry, I couldn't resist, as I've never been to one, myself. The closest I've been to a castle are remnants of fortifications in Georgia, Florida and the Appalachian mountains. But none intact nor tours available. Even fun the wrong period, it was still exciting to visit.
I'd love to have a tour across various castles as Shad is displaying here .
I'm glad he shared these for us.
Castle shad is best shad
Castle shad = Chad
Yup. I always have to check these out. the more history focused videos are more to my taste now a days.
It was so great to have Ben take you through the castle. His information was brilliant.
I agree. We are here for Shad but he added so much to the video. Excellent
Thank you Shad and thanks to Ben for being a great guide.
This. Shad's enthusiasm and study of castles in general, combined with a knowledgeable guide to point out specific details, nuance and noteworthy history.
It is a great combination.
Shad,
I’ve been watching for years now....
In my opinion, this is your best video ever. Please add more like this.
This is also my favorite video he has ever done. Absolutely amazing! And such an incredibly knowledgeable guide too!
It's a shame the cost of such trips is prohibitive for a lot of folks. I'm so glad Shad the Lady were able to make this trip across the world for this.
He lives in Australia
He missed an opportunity to shock the hell out of the guide with a raucous roar of MACHICOLATIOOOOONS!
Also love that I got this recommended, and that it’s more in line with the Shad content that brought me into this community. Not that I don’t enjoy some of the content with his friends, I just didn’t sub for them.
that was a great opportunity to let out his inner shad
I totally agree that this "architectural" content always been my main interest. Not so much weapon comparison etc,
I was waiting for that.
I agree. I like weapons testing too, but the difference for me is that this hour-plus of actual value added content is so much more watchable than 12 minutes of content spread over 35 minutes of youtuberitis (here's me clowning with these other OUTRAGEOUS personalities, gaming gaming gaming, and don't forget to buy muh merch!).
MORE CASTLES!!!
czcams.com/video/0wFHqFpZjJ8/video.htmlfeature=shared
Not gonna lie this is one of the best video's Shad has put out recently, can't put my finger on it but I think it's something about him being able to bounce off of another individual highly educated in what he's passionate about.
While I really like Shad's usual comments and thoughts about castles, local guide discussing history and features of the house with a person that understands the period and asks the right questions, really fleshed out this video.
100% agred. We come for Shad but this was excellent as an addition. Shad also really worked well with him asking the right questions and giving him the right amount of time and respect to do the job well.
Absolutely. watching the guide listening closely I had the impression he was thinking, "Finally, someone with interest AND knowledge!" :)
I really liked the tour guide, I believe his name was Ben. it felt like he and Shad were two nerds nerding out about castles and history (and I suppose they were).
Yes, I love it. And I had the sensation that the tour guide learnt more from Shad than Shad from him. Many times, Ben`s nodding was like: "wow, I didn`t know that, though I should have, and this foreigner explains this better than me, so let`s play like: yeah, exactly, that`s what I wanted to say!" In the end, he sighed: "OK, I survived this without losing face..."
Ben clearly loves his job 😁😁
Firt time ive found a shad video in less than a minute after it was posted!
Same
Same (me too'ing to add interaction for his metrics)
I mean … it's an actual castle video. It's how I and probably most viewers came to know the channel in the first place and likely a much bigger draw for many than some of the other topics Shad has covered in recent time. I'm actually not that surprised it gets more traction.
Ditto!
May be IT IS so because the Video ist about a Castle and Not weapons .
Maybe CZcams Just dont Like Videos about weapons and so on, even If the video is about historical waepons 🤔
As a Warwicken (Warwick resident) living right next to the castle.glad you enjoyed your visit and some things in your video I wasn't aware of before. A little local knowledge you might find interesting is Warwick has underground tunnels running from the castle to various places in and around Warwick , entrances to the tunnels found so far are tilted wig pub cellar, punchbowl pub cellar, priory park, Guys cliff house but supposedly all over Warwick and well past what would have been the castle walls .👍
Thank you Ben, wonderful tour!
I'm a Canadian, but I've been to this castle about 4 times. It's awesome. Last time I went they had a trebuchet demonstration!
I agree, it's an amazing place to visit. What did they 'fling' from the trebuchet?
@@ac1646 It's usually a fireball. I gather it burned down a boathouse structure once.
@@SGrahamArt OMG! That must have drawn some 'YIKES!!' from the crowd. 🤣🤣 I was imagining a giant softball for a demonstration.
Bet Ben was psyched to talk to someone as enthusiastic and knowledgeable as he is about castles. Good pairing :)
Ben was a real pleasure on this one. Knew his stuff and was good at communicating it.
The Home of the Kingmaker
Beautiful Shad, thank you for this video, and for having Ben as a guide.
Fabulous encapsulation of castle history. Really impressed with Ben's input and knowledge.
More castles, awesome! Thank you Shad!
This is fascinating!
Next best thing to getting to see it in person. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!
A fantastic video, extremely well presented and wonderfully edited. I live just a few miles away from Warwick Castle and I have visited it many, many times, so much to see and do.
Wow great Video, when I clicked on it and saw it was an hour I didn't know if I would make it through it in one sitting, and next thing I know the video was over. Such an amazing castle would be something to behold
so glad you're doing Castles!
An hour long video?? Oh yeah I'm saving this bad boy for breakfast. Watching some good historical analysis makes me actually wanna wake up early lol
This is brilliant. The "nerdy" conversation you guys have throughout the video is just so exciting to see and hear. THIS is amazing content.
What a treat, i love these castle videos and this deep dive with the informative and friendly guide Ben made this the best castle video yet.
Shad being able to go full nerd with a real expert is so great.
This is a really cool layout for a castle. I like that you can trace the development of the castle through hundreds of years of history.
"Zwinger" is the German word for someone or something, that forces you to do something. In this case, the narrow walls force you to walk into an area, where you are vulnerable.
I love these castle videos.
I'm so glad to see you're still making content like this. Swords and armor are cool and all, but the castle deep dives are what really makes this channel unique and they're the reason I subbed years ago. Keep it up!
Shad's knowledge makes him an unofficial historian of the medieval era and rightfully so.
Me and my wife are currently having a getaway here and stayed in a log cabin in the knights village just the 2 of us, we are leaving tomorrow morning after a 3 day stay. Such an amazing time here at warwick castle! I reccomend all to come and visit it is surreal 🙂 "Fun fact, My last name is Pountain, we had our coat of arms and heraldry done here, my name dates back to the domesday books and we were honoured and given land and a Manor by William the Conqueror himself for our Pountain Ancestors fighting in the battle of Hastings!, so my ancestors too once could of stepped foot in this castle almost 1000 years ago after it was built by William!"
Still totally here for these!
Edit: I love these tours! I know they hit your views, which is sad… but I still adore them! Thanks for putting in so much effort! Thank you to Ben, that was pretty cool access and additional information!
EditEdit: And Warwick is notoriously hard to make interesting, given how modernised it is - although I prefer Chirk, as last I heard, the family still lived there, and… while I may rant in another post about class issues and hogging wealth, I do think they should have the right to reside comfortably in their family home, everyone should have the right to purchase, own or inherit land over their lifetime, it makes a stronger community, IMO - but all that aside, you did a great job making this relevant! Please tell me you managed to reach some of the great Scottish Castles… if not, you need to come back - and I know that’s a big deal!
EditEditEdit: Edit: And while protection and care for a lifetime of backbreaking / hard service is more welcome than the way we are treated today (speaking as a personal servant of the crown, with a generous remuneration and retirement package) that doesn’t forgive the hoarding of wealth and resources by the rich, or diminish the ugliness of the class system. I think your religious beliefs are affecting your judgement here, Shad. Sure, we have the Victorians to blame for so much - from the global impact of British culture through to the importance of Indian food worldwide - never mind tea (which wasn’t all there fault) but… a lot of our ideals of wealth, success and corporate success / celebrity success are based on these class distinctions, and are - in my opinion, just as ungodly, and I happen to have textual proof Jesus would agree, if he existed, probably with violent yet peaceful revolution (something only the son of god could manage!).
I love these castle videos - please keep them up!
What a gorgeous castle. Never been to Warwick but this is definitely going on the list.
1 hour of Shad geeking out over a castle... count me in
More castles, more awesome. Seeing Shad leaning on that railing looking over the whole castle, man, dude looks like he's in the perfect place.
This castle series has been outstanding and this has been my favorite so far. I enjoyed the more serious tone and long-form aspects especially.
Shad was impressive with his knowledge, My only issue is we don't have a clear idea of just how much this castle has changed
It's changed a lot since first foundation as a motte and bailey, but when you go there you can still see the early layout and the bailey is definitely big.
Unfortunately, that's a major issue across all historical sites. Big example being Egypt as a country-wide jigsaw puzzle of reused stone, but the same is true all over.
It's just easier to reuse material from an existing building than it is to quarry new rock.
Man, what i'd give for a time machine..
@@dudeguy8686
Stone has been ' recycled ' off of the Coliseum and Pyramids as I understand it ....
a couple of 100 or a 1000 yrs later who cares right ?
@@dudeguy8686 Or a whole re-used Sphynx, with a facelift. Potentially.
I am such a sucker for the castle content on this channel. I will always watch it
Glad to see that you enjoyed visiting Warwick Castle as much as I did Shad.
This was an awesome video to watch. Very enjoyable to see Shad being able to bounce off someone who actually knew the castle so well. Ben was an enjoyable person to listen to as well. But for some reason his voice makes me think of an English Nathan.
I hope there's still more to watch of Shad's travels across well, only seems to be Wales and England at the moment. I guess Shad is now racist to the Scots these days. Eh, as a Scotsman, I can see his point in that.
So awesome that these videos are still coming out from time to time! Great work Shad! I love these explorations of castles.
When they are standing out front of the castle talking…. It really looks like a mat painting… it’s freaking me out lol. Beautiful 👍
This video NEEDS to be reuploaded, the amount of views on this needs to be 10x more than what it's at right now, what a wonderful video!
Yay! I love these castle videos. This was so so fascinating. Thank you for sharing it, and thanks to Ben for his knowledge as well. ❤
loving the shad castle arc
THis is a gorgeous castle and still in good shape. I am happy you got to tour it and talk with the guide for so long. This is a very informative video. I want to build a castle, I don't know if my life will ever turn in that direction but I get so many good ideas and inspiration from your lectures on castles. I believe one day soon we will have a civil war or even an invasion of our country and we will wish we all had castles instead of first floor houses. Good Job Shad!! Also your own knowledge must have impressed the guide.
Maybe the best video on Shadiversity ever. So much excitement and detail and Shad or the guide have no hurry to anywhere so many small details gets both pointed out but also discussed. So great.
This is one of the best videos you've posted in a while, Shad. I loved it.
I absolutely love watching a couple of enthusiastic people nerd out on a common topic! You can feel the enjoyment while learning so much.
I wish everyone could experience the joy of doing what you love like Shad is doing. He loves studying medieval civilization and gets to share it with the world. I want him as my tour guide.
That tour guide is the most British looking young man I’ve ever seen 😂
Thanks for this video, I loved it!
"Death features" - added to vocabulary.
Man, what a beautiful castle. Definitely need to visit it one day
Wow, I have never been recommended a shad video this soon after it being posted
That's TV-Quality. Great video!
To clarify: European TV, more specific Swiss Public TV (SRF) or German public TV (ARD, ZDF, SWR, BR, WDR, MDR, NDR etc.).
This is presented very well. Shad explains what he can and then asks appropriate questions to the guide to get more info on things he doesn't fully understand
At 49:14 you can see my sister and mother, i talked to you after you finished that shot and took a picture with you! This video was amazing and it was worth the waiting, almost a year yet worth the wait
That's awesome! I'd love to visit these castles he's showcased (and any other I could, hahaha).
I bet it was cool to see Shad as well, especially in his gambison (I think that's the right term)
22:45 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the video, Shad! These kinds of vids are always helpful for my medieval fantasy story writing! Keep up the great work!
No way. One hour about castle? HELL YEAH! Love these videos!
Woo castle
Also first... I think
In the beginning, I thought they were standing by a mural until a guy walked through the background.
Thank you so much Shad for taking me to some of the places I may never go.
It's so cool to see you get to explore these places you've researched forever. This is a fabulous resource for homeschooling families or just teachers in general.
I visited Warwick twice when I was stationed in England 16 years ago. Both visits were amazing, and thanks for the virtual tour.
Great video! and Shad, thank you for sharing this with us all.
An hour of castle content? Sign me up.
"The granary is full, my lord."
get up on those walls!
"The people are...unsure of you sire."
Your Stronghold awaits, my lord. That was my favorite RTS game.
This was so entertaining. The rapport between you and the tour guide was excellent. You could tell he loved his subject and was knowledgeable on related subjects too. He had some great jokes. Loved the coffin door. the "chuck em" lol. oh my. Beautiful castle and great tour and knowledge. Follys are fun, architectural structures with no other functionality than being fun and decorative. "because I like it" How could that be a folly? It's pretty and fun.
Fantastic video Shad! From my humble perspective, when you present the culture, history, and warfare as a cohesive whole, I learn so much more. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching you stab stuff, but you excel even greater as a teacher.
I love this. Two castle nerds unite! The results are beautiful.
Such great conversation with an excellent tour guide - very much appreciate touring Warwick with you Shad - thanks so much!
i love watching these castle video's! Shad has such a good time he's darn right giddy!
I was raised less than an hour's drive from Warwick Castle, and I've visited it at least 10 times; I try to see it every time I go back to the UK. First, I was just pleased that you were visiting one of my favourite castles, then I started to learn things I didn't know about it. This was a great video, Shad!
A very interesting video, fascinating medieval history. I live in a village and am 400yards from PATRINGTON Church, built in the 13/14th century. It's construction was delayed due to the various plagues decimating the country. A small village yet such a large church. Bearing testament to the power of religion in this period.
Warwick is my home town, I grew up on a housing estate called the Forbes Estate which is a 2 minutes walk from the Castle. When I was a kid, (70/80s) my mates and I used to play in the castle grounds, until security saw us and chased us out, lol. It has certainly changed since then. It is a great castle to visit, if you're into castles that is.
What a wonderful guide to Warwick Castle. Well done Shad and Ben.
Love that castle, before I moved out of the uk as a child I frequented this castle. Love going back every time I’m back there!
I think this might be the best video you've done? Awesome job 👍
Haven't watched you in a long while to be honest but your castle videos got put in my feed recently and thank the algorithm! Absolutely amazing stuff and you've earned a sub. You can tell that Ben really enjoyed your visit. I am sure most times he is talking to people who have no idea about castles or their history. Getting to talk to you about more nuanced parts of this castle and in parts normally off limits to the public must have been a treat for him as much as it was for you.
Thank you to Warwick castle for the tour! Excellent video.
Awesome, thank you so much for this. Damn that was good. Please just keep this series coming. There is so much more to learn and so much more to see and that's just a part of "just" England. Europe is huge of castles and history.
Seriously. He could easily have spent a year (or several?) traveling to places like that.
I think it was just he and his wife (running the camera) on this trip. I don't remember how long it lasted, but they have several children, so it couldn't have been to terribly long a stay. Long distance from Australia to Wales for sure.
Went here every Christmas Eve before we emigrated to Adelaide. So many memories, manly failing to ice-skate.
And getting lost with Dad, long story short they thought everyone in the tour group left so they locked us inside. No lights or anything.
Thanks Shad! So much to take in all at once! (please forgive me if I forget some)
You're living The Dream for us all!!!
Forget the slashing random things with weapons stuff. The historical information is why I'm here. ❤
What a jolly good fellow that guide you got there. You fitted well together explaining the castle and it's various features.
Shout out to Ben, marvelous wealth of information and good co-host for this video. The knowledge he has combined with Shads own backround and ability to point things out (which Ben had the local knowledge of) makes this one of the best castle videos you’ve ever made.
It’s really is great when someone has info and someone else has the knowledge to ask relevant questions and understand that info
I visited Warwick in the 70s as a kid, and I remember the “torture chamber”. There was a sign with arrows pointing in various directions saying “Dungeon/Torture Chamber/Gift Shop”!
Warwick castle is my absolute favorite and the first castle my parents ever took me to see when I was a kid. It's difficult to name a more impressive symbol of medieval grandeur. It's a shame that it had paper-thin curtain walls, making it look like a much weaker fortification than it really was.
Did you ever get to see the tourneys they used to hold? I remember watching from the walls as a "Frenchman" and an English man argued about whether the loss of Aquitaine and Normandy was truly a loss to the crown. I was a kid and it stuck with me for decades now. I always laugh remembering the Brit saying, "bah we still have Calais" and the "Frenchman" holding his nose and declaring that he could keep it
I still have fond memories of visiting the Castle as a child. Glad you enjoyed your visit.
Just excellent content, you guys were perfect co-hosts.
I did not get a notification about this but this is an absolutely fascinating video!
Haven't been to Warwick Castle since I was a kid. Really cool.
it's super, super mega expensive to visit now - Mme Tussauds.
Some of your best work .
This was a really excellent video - you and Ben the tour guide worked really well together! Proper in depth castle nerdery - love to see it.
