    Another good video. A fun thing we like to do on NCL is find the crew members who sort of work their butts off but not as visible as others to get rewarded. This can be the guy who delivers your luggage early. The hostess who got you a great table. The guy in the spa who is constantly mopping and bringing fresh towels. We love to tip them, acknowledge them to management with the NCL Hero cards, and thank them. The reactions are priceless. Yes the great bartenders get so many tips and compliments. But its fun to seek out the ones who work just as hard but behind the scenes a little.

    • @Cruisingwithwheels
      @Cruisingwithwheels  Před 6 lety +1

      It truly is the behind the scenes crew that rarely get acknowledged. We like to acknowledge as many as we can or give some type of gift. On our last Oct. 2017 NCL Jade sailing...it was a Halloween cruise. We brought costumes for the night. The crew had their own Halloween party two nights later and we gave them our costumes to wear & keep. They were so grateful.

    Good advice. I am very committed to tipping well for good service, but not a dime for poor or no service. When someone acts like they resent doing even the minimum required for their job, or they just plain don't do their job, I don't see why I should give them money for it. OTOH- if I get great service I will tip BIG, and often really BIG. I had one waiter on RCL, though, who shot himself in the foot. Tall Jamaican guy with a heavy accent who actually gave pretty good service, BUT starting about 3 days from the end of the cruise he started using the sentence "Think about that when you leave my EXTRA gratuity" about every five minutes. I mean every time he refilled your water glass it was "Think about THAT when you leave my EXTRA gratuity." Well, I had intended to leave him something extra as he had given pretty good service, but after 3 days of his soliciting "EXTRA GRATUITY", I soured on it and did not leave it for him.

    Great advice-as usual! I also wanted to add, for those traveling with kids- to not forget the crew staff at the children’s activity center. Not only do they do a great job, but after much research, it is my understanding that they’re not included in the ‘general’ distribution of tips. (Guess it’s b/c not everyone travels with children.) I have 1 child, and usually give $50 to the director at the kids center on the end of our cruise. Cruise vacations, are hands down, or families favorite type of vacation, we all have a great time - my daughter always raves about the activities at the kids center and my hubby and I get to enjoy some adult time. NCL’s kids center even has meet/greet time with the Nickelodeon characters that kids love so much, like Sponge-bob and Dora!

    @boatlover1875 Před 6 lety +1

    As usual, you both give great advice. I've found a few extra bucks here and there are the best money spent on a cruise! I have researched heavily life on a cruise ship. A common pay to the non officers that help you everywhere all day long is something like $700 for working 7 days a week 10 or more hours per day.
    I think many who go down and reduce their automatic gratuities are just cheap by nature and search their whole cruise for some excuse to do so and still feel good about themselves. To me this is very said bordering on pathetic. You rightfully mentioned they are hurting everyone else even if they had a grip about one particular person.
    I give the bar staff that do a good job for me $5-10/day and it is well worth it. I'd rather get a few well made drinks than 10 watered down drinks with all the extra sugar. After day 1, they will remember you and have it ready when you sit down! I also agree with about the Porters. Oddly, in NY getting on the Gem, they seemed to be tipped less than in, say Miami, I thought this was odd as tipping is usually very common there. I usually tip my steward $40 for a a good job and $20 for an okay job at the end. I do understand your method and sometimes if I have bought a bottle for the room might give them $5 at the beginning asking them to keep the ice full and then tip them the same at the end. I kind of feel this may make them better down the line, not sure if I'm right. I usually leave $5 on the table in the MD for good service as well.
    I don't think anyone should feel bad for not tipping above the standard daily gratuity though. I feel I have been fortunate in life and $100 or so extra on a 7 day cruise will benefit the lives of these guys and gals who make the trip so great so much more than it will make a difference in my life. I hope you guys don't mind but I have noticed a few questions regarding cruising with a handicap on other channels and referred them you way.

    • @Cruisingwithwheels
      @Cruisingwithwheels  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks boat lover !!!! You, Kevin and I have the same philosophy on tipping. The crew works so hard all day, all week......week after week. Above & beyond service should be rewarded, I think, as well as pre-reward as incentive to get exactly what you're looking for (good drinks, special attention, extra help, good info) And thanks for the referrals !! Anytime someone needs info on handicap traveling.........we're the team !!!

  • @2CraftySeniors
    @2CraftySeniors Před 6 lety +5

    That was actually very helpful. Being Canadian, we aren't used to tipping every person we encounter. LOL I do tip my hairdresser, wait staff and the like, but tipping here also depends on whether the person earns a tip. Tipping was never expected until a few years ago, when things seemed to change. It was an extra thank you to a certain person for doing an extra-special job, like a monetary compliment. Now it's expected and divvied up, which isn't how tipping was originally done. Too often it's used by companies to augment wages... and frankly, I think that companies should be ashamed of themselves for this attitude. I've seen owners of high-end restaurants take half of the tips and then share the rest with the staff. That to me is disgusting, but it's apparently not unusual. I've never been a stingy tipper, but I hesitate to tip as much as I used to because I know this. But that's me and I have to accept that this is how things are in today's world.
    At any rate, thank you! The information in your video will be very useful when hubby and I finally take our first cruise (I'm planning for 2019). Having prepared thank you cards is a truly great idea and solves the dilemma of how much, when, and all that. I wonder though, how much cash should we be carrying for the extra tips? I know you said "what your comfortable doing" but would, say, $100 in small bills be enough?

    • @Cruisingwithwheels
      @Cruisingwithwheels  Před 6 lety +3

      Glad you enjoyed the video !!! I totally agree....tipping should be earned and it's a shame that some companies pay such low wages that their employees have to count on tipping in order to survive. I think $ 100 is plenty....it's pretty much what we take.

    I think everyone is clear below, but maybe not. We pay for our tipping before we make final payment - like with Celebrity and NCL, I pay for the tipping. HOWEVER, we do like you guys do, we tip our room steward, our butler, concierge in an envelope at the end of the cruise, on top of it. The tipping the cruises collect pre-cruise is such a small amount. I like the idea of a thank you note, though! I will do that next time. I mean we always extra tip, the amount; however, depends on the level of service I've received. The other thing we do, if we spend a lot of time at a particular bar, is tip our favorite person bringing us drinks, like at the Sunset Bar on Celebrity. We will give him $20 first or second day and then like every two-three days after that, tip them another $20 and that at the end another $20. We receive amazing service! We spend a lot of time at the Sunset Bar because DH is a cigar smoker. :) .

    • @Cruisingwithwheels
      @Cruisingwithwheels  Před 6 lety +1

      If you're talking about transport from Port of Miami to the airport........Does your cruise line offer their own bus transfer (which we have used before on Carnival) Also, we'll be arriving back at the Port of Miami on 11/06, when our cruise aboard the NCL Jade ends........and we now use a private car service: GroundLink (it's easier with my wheelchair & offers more privacy) We have also used a taxi in the past......but be sure to use your cell phone GPS, so they don't take you on an " expensive ride ". LOL We generally look at the cost $$ of each option and weigh the pros & cons of each. Have you watched our video: Ground Transportation & Cruising, for ideas ? czcams.com/video/En-NoQ01AJY/video.html

    I have been looking at cruises that cruise nz and they charge a cruise fee that isnt actually cheap but still say that gratuities are extra. Also i found cruise price was in nzd or aud but the gratuities were in nzd. Our money here in nz is only worth like 60cents to the dollar so its a lot more.
    I also got told that the amounts went by rank. If you get the best service from the person who looks after your room and they have the lowest rank then they get the least. You should be able to decide who you tip and how much.

    Hello Kevin and Frank! My partner and I are going on Alaska cruise this June and I availed for the all ultimate beverage package as part of free at sea promo. NCL already charged me a mandatory beverage gratuity of $89 per person plus the regular prepaid service charge of $189 for our cabin. That’s total of $367 and that’s quite a lot for gratuity I find for two of us on a 7 day cruise. I’m just wondering if staff on the bars expect a little something after we order our drinks.

    Do cruise lines count disembarkation day a a tip charge day?
    I also think 18% is a bit excessive for mixing someone a cocktail or pouring them a beer at an on ship bar or lounge.

    • @Cruisingwithwheels
      @Cruisingwithwheels  Před 6 lety +1

      We calculated our June 2018 Alaska cruise gratuities. 6/02 - 6/09/18 - though it's actually 8 days here.....the cruise is listed as a 7 day cruise and if you divide 7 into what we paid, it comes out to what they charge per cabin, based on double occupancy. So, no disembarkation day.

    I know this is almost a year late, but I have to share my experience in New Orleans. We just got back from a 7 day cruise to the Bahamas. We always tip $2 per bag going on the boat. We both only had 1 bag. Unfortunately, my husband spent all the small bills in the Bahamas( maybe on beer? ) 😁 He only had 20s. I didn't realize this until we got a Porter. He took our 2 bags through customs extra fast, and then put the suitcases on the curb, while my husband got the car. When he showed up for the tip, and my husband said he only had a 20, could he make change?
    The porter said he didn't have change??? Now I realize... that was a bold-faced lie, but we were hot, tired, & ready to go, so he got the 20. if we have been thinking straight, we could have asked another Porter or someone else for change.
    I wish him no bad luck but I think Karma will visit him. Lesson learned. Have plenty of ones and fives...Thank you guys.

    What bothers me is that the cruise line charges tips even on small children staying in the cabin. I don't mind paying the tips for the adults, but not for the small children. Thanks for your tips.

    Many of the staff on cruise ships are depending on personal tips. They have many responsibilities and heavy workloads with little compensation and free time. What is confusing to me is figuring how much to tip is appropriate.

    Tipping is such a big deal. The cruise lines do not properly compensate the crews. After years of seeing demanding passengers at the desk, removing their tips on the last day of the cruise, I had a tee shirt made that I wear on the final day. It says, Tipping is not a city in China! Rigby and I send love.

    I understand that the cruise line has to take the gratuities out semi-automatically from the passengers because so few cruisers would are willing pay them consistently. I do disagree with the prepaid tipping for the back of the house. I don't remember it being this way in the past (10 years ago or so). I feel strongly that they should pay their unseen employees out the cruise fare profits and let me at my discretion pay the employees that i directly interact with.
    I go down to guest services and pull all of the prepaid tips and use them to pay the "interacting crew", plus more out of my pocket, and the best service gets the most, although everybody usually generously tipped. How do I know who gets what behind the scenes? I don't, but their supervisors do, so they should pay them accordingly. I do this system and I still feel a little bit guilty about it though-i really shouldn't.

    • @Cruisingwithwheels
      @Cruisingwithwheels  Před 3 lety

      Tipping IS a very personal issue....and everyone feels differently about it. We just wouldn't want to take tip money away from, let's say...the crew member that vacuums the ship all night while we're sleeping.....or the ones that keep the windows clean and bright. Just because we don't interact with them...doesn't mean they work any less hard than the ones we meet with one-on-one during the day at a restaurant, bar or in our cabin. As for the cruise line's policies.....they are what they are.

    It's only uncomfortable not to tip if you come from North America. I have no problem leaving the $14.50 on the account but that's a high amount daily and apart from the room steward there will be no extras. YMMV I can see the point though if you need some extra help with bags etc.

    I have a question when you go to the bar and you get one drink each how much would you tip them and also the prepaid gratuities do the bartenders get it get them too? You know how they have those things in the shop before you go on the website to decorate and such is it worth it because I’m thinking of doing it for our anniversary since I didn’t do it last year I completely blanked out last year to do it is it worth it

    • @Cruisingwithwheels
      @Cruisingwithwheels  Před 6 lety +2

      If you purchase a pre-paid drink package......you don't have to tip (it's included) However.....if you're just buying drinks, here & there....we usually tip $ 1. The bartenders will get a % of the pre-paid gratuities, based on their OTHER jobs that they do onboard...not for working the bar. We have never purchased the room decoration package before.....but I feel it might be worth it, cause if you want it, then it's worth it. We'll find out soon.......don't tell Frank I purchased it for his birthday cruise !!!

    Paying a tip is supposed to be for receiving exceptional services not a way for employers to rip off there workers.when I have worked in hospitality I believed that I was being paid to do my job to the best of my ability if someone says thank you to me that’s fine but if someone tried to tip me it would be embarrassing and I would find it demeaning.i would much rather pay a higher cruise fare and not have tipping at all unless I chose to. Paying for a high priced drinks package and then having to pay 18% each time I get a drink is frankly robbery and shouldn’t be allowed.
    I think it is extremely underhanded and sneaky of these companies who sell these cruises and don’t tell people about all these extras until after you sign up.yes I know the information is out there if you really look but it should be illegal not to talk about those costs when you book your cruise I shouldn’t have to ask. I believe a lot of cruise lines don’t tell people up front on purpose until you have paid your money and then you a guilted into paying gratuities and tips. Here’s my tip pay people a decent wage don’t make them beg and be reliant on others largesse to make up there pay it’s demeaning to a persons dignity
