France to provide Ukraine with 'Mirage' fighter jets | DW News

- Ukraine's allies have already begun allowing Kyiv to use Western weapons to attack military targets inside Russia. The French leader, Emmanuel Macron, has even suggested that NATO troops could be deployed within Ukraine - to carry out training missions for example. But NATO boots on the ground in Ukraine, in whatever capacity, would be seen as a significant escalation by Russia.

Correction: The graphic at 2:06 incorrectly says ‘Long-range missiles targeting inside Russia.’ The US has eased limitations on how Ukraine can use American weapons, allowing for some strikes into Russia for the limited purpose of defending Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city. I. "Really good day for Ukraine to receive NATO warplanes"
Really?
Won't this just prolong a hopeless struggle?
Putin is ready to make peace along the current battle lines.
Will the continuation and escalation of this senseless war help anyone?
II. "Are these NATO warplanes too little too late?"
Neither NATO, nor DW, nor Marina seems to have the slightest clue as to what the Ukrainian/NATO goal is in this war.
Russia will never allow Ukraine to become a member of NATO or retake Crimea or the Donbas.
Are NATO and Ukraine just trying to provoke WW III?
III. " Is the purpose of these NATO warplanes to attack or defend?
The best defense is a good offense.
Russia is not bluffing about the use of tactical nuclear weapons to defend the Motherland.
Almost certainly NATO weapons are going to be used in this NATO-proxy war against Russia to inflict severe damage on key Russian assets. Take, for example, the Ukrainian drone strike which destroyed over-the-horizon Russian radar near Orsk. This radar was
not directed at Ukraine, but was used primarily to detect a first strike NATO attack on Russia.
Nato is provoking a real catastrophe because Russian nuclear doctrine is clear.
When Russia's existence is threatened, she will use nuclear weapons to defend herself.
IV. "How will Russia respond to French soldiers in Ukraine?"
It requires only a firm grasp of the obvious to see that now NATO is looking for a direct confrontation between NATO troops and Russian forces.
What Marina, DW, NATO, et al do not understand is that Russia has a self confidence founded upon 'The Great Patriotic War' which leads Russians to believe that they will prevail in any conflict because they believe that they are tougher and smarter than their enemies -- eg the Wehrmacht in the past and NATO today.
Thus, Russia will eventually respond to NATO's provocations with a punch to NATO's nose: for example, a strike on NATO staging centers in Poland or the Baltic States to which NATO will have no good answer because the US, (especially under Trump), will not sacrifice NYC or LA for some obscure base in Poland that Russia has destroyed. Similarly, France and Britain will not sacrifice either Paris or London if Russia obliterates
a NATO staging area in a NATO country.
In sum, the so-called strategist, Marina, lacks basic strategic insight.
(But, on the good news front, Marina has swapped her Zelle 75% off, slightly irregular gray jacket for a brownish t-shirt from the IDF military surplus super-store's bargain barrel).
Correction. They were talking about training SOLDIERS, not pilots in Ukraine.
Indeed. There is no sense in training pilots in Ukraine because that means bringing the planes in a warzone without being able to use them right away, making nice targets for Russian attacks. Better to train the pilots (we're talking about few dozen people at most) and maybe mechanics too in France alongside French pilots and mechanics, then send the planes with the trained pilots back to fight in Ukraine.
Pilots and fighter jets
US retired military officers saying, Ukraine did not maintain their Abrams and crew couldn't use them to the best of their abilities. French and US jets require lots of maintenance and training. Both Ukranians and Russias are cowboys when it comes to using equipment.
Its more like burden. Make up their damn minds. Either all are F16 or Mirage, not mix of aircraft because its going to be an administrative and logistical nightmare. Its silly.

This is huge news. Though slightly less capable than the F-16, the Mirage 2000-5 is actually a much better fit for Ukraine right now. Outside of the Gripen (and possibly the F/A-18) the Mirage is arguably the best Western fighter jet for Ukraine at this moment.
Well, Mirage 2000-5 can carry Scalp/Storm Shadow cruise missles, which F-16 can't.
So they has been learning last year to pilot F16 (still no pilots yet) but now they go pilot different plane in no time? Got it.
@@tomatokosir True! Which is another reason why the Mirage 2000-5 is the better fit for Ukraine right now. However, the F-16 can carry the AIM 120 which has a longer range than the Scalp. This is one of the reasons why I say the 2000-5 is slightly less capable than the F-16. There are other reasons why the Mirage is the better fit for Ukraine right now... but they're not the best fit. The Gripen *HANDS DOWN* takes that honor. And due to that fact, it would be far more prudent for the West to only provide Ukraine with the Gripen. It sounds like Sweden is getting close to offering Ukraine the Gripen, but we're still not there yet unfortunately.
@@delta_glider4362 A valid criticism but it still doesn't change the fact that the Mirage is better suited for Ukraine's needs than the F-16 right now. How can Ukraine win? They don´t win by rolling over the world´s second largest army... they can win by making this costly for Russia... by as it is now, forcing Russia into a war economic = producing weapons instead of welfare. I'm trying to think how F-16's would be very useful here the anti air systems on both sides are pretty significant. I would think they have the range to take out some old s300 missile systems easily with the new higher ranged and older agm missiles but I don't think they could take out the s400's because the range is like 1000km for agm's and 3000km for the s400 (Although Russia often lies about their military equipment's capabilities, I can't imagine it would be off by 2000km or 66%). I wonder how they will be used it seems like ground based guided missile attacks back and forth and drones have been the most useful so far in the war. Although Russia has tons of inaccurate old artillery as well to pound cities and civilian centers. Maybe they can find gaps in the s400 detection ranges to take out some s300's and other ground based targets. But there have been reports that the Russians are jamming a lot of these systems massively lowering the effectiveness and percentage of targets destroyed. I guess they could also be used defensively against enemy air but I don't think Russia has sent many planes into Ukraine itself so far interestingly.
If nothing else, the F-16 and Mirage are more jets with a spare parts supply. I don't think MiG or Sukhoi will be supplying Ukraine with spare parts or technical support. because to lose it - is not a good idea either. western order is about to collapse and the only option to keep it afloat at least partially - save Ukraine
Haha. That's all the Kremlin brigade in here does. Probably means they think that Russia is losing the war.
@@adrien5834 yap yap yap.
They were asking for * free fighter jets :)
Ukraine has become a dumping ground for old weapons. These jets will be countered in the same way as the Abrams tanks. They were destroyed and some captured over a short period of time. Now they're out of action
Very few.
not really. Wanna check numbers for the T-90s?
@@giuseppeanoardi3973 That's pretty high math there.
Dumb comment
2000s circa is hardly old. They just want to stall a complete collapse until our potato in chief cheats out another win.
The Mirage 2000-5 being sent are focused mostly on air to air combat but are quite dated even with their upgrades. They could potentially lead to Mirage 2000D sent in the future however which are a newer version that is focused on air to ground. They are still useful.
France has been phasing out Mirage 2000-5 first and will phase out Mirage 2000D in the near future as they replace them with Rafale.
Next year???
Training the enemy in Anyone's eyes is participating in combat operations.
France to supply Ukraine with a fighter called the Mirage.
The US promises fighters which, after 2 years are still a mirage
Very clever reply. Big like.
U.S. never promised Ukraine fighters. They approved other countries to give F-16 to Ukraine. It also takes over a year to train a pilot to fly a F-16 compared to the outdated aircraft they flew.
What a very American reply .... have you considered working for the state dept.?
We are one step closer guys buckle up ..heard Russia nuclear submarine was on carribean seas 😂😂
Bla bla bla. Putin knows that attacking Ukraine or a NATO country with nukes would trigger a massive counterattack that would destroy Russia, himself and his regime. Putin is a coward he made a thousand red lines that if crossed would trigger a nuclear war. NATO crossed every single one of them and Putin did nothing. Because Putin is a coward.
Buy Polaroid anyway
Who cares.
Marina Miron always elucidates the true nature of Russo-Ukrainian war.
Why would soldiers be training pilots? I'd think that be a job for other pilots.
Russia does NOT have air superiority or they would be riding the skies above Ukraine. What they have is a stalemate where neither side has any superiority and hence the WW1 trench warfare tactics of building land based defenses. Actual air superiority, like over Kuwait in the 90s would completely change the war landscape and tactics from stalemate to checkmate.
They kind of do what they want with missiles and drones, why should they send people instead?
@@delta_glider4362 Your comment makes no sense in terms of air superiority. Drones are not -- in today's technology -- an air superiority force. In order for "they kind of do" to make sense, Russia would have to be able to fly over Ukraine with impunity, and they are too scared to do so. They have not used even one of their advanced fighters and the mythical G5 is no where to be seen due to the humiliation of it being shot down with Western tech.
You are a "glider" not a jet and should rethink your comments.
There is no stalemate and their never was a stalemate, you do not know anything about warfare in Ukraine. What you thought was a stalemate was Russia paused and went on the defensive while recruiting more troops when they decided they needed more troops to accomplish their mission.
Russia does air superiority and they can use it anytime they want to but they prefer to use missiles and drones when they will do the job because they loose less highly skilled pilots and expensive aircraft that way. Russia aircraft are superior to anything the West has besides F-22s and F-35s.
Your can not compare warfare in the 90s to todays warfare, warfare has completely changed due to drones and new types of sophisticated weaponry like hypersonic missiles and glide bombs.
Half of ukraine is taken, and you call it stalemate?
@@KevinAdams26 Air superiority does not mean you can fly with impunity, you can always get shot down no mater how sophisticated your aircraft is.
Final proof that frogs have balls too! Vive les frogs! 🇸🇯❤️🐸
As long as someone else is doing actual fighting. They lost the balls with the end of WW1. At least, they have a wannabe Napoleon at the helm. 😁
France ruled Europe for centuries and it's the country who won the most battles and wars in the entire history so I guess we have nothing to prove. History didn't start in 1940 ;)
@@mementomori9790 Yeah. France is probably the only state in the world with a cake as head of state. The French still love frogs though. At least their legs. 😁

How?
Do these jets come with missiles?
How many? Last for a few months? One year?
And then?
Must be less then 10 if numbers any mentioned

Top sarcasm there
If Ukraine invites Nato to Ukraine that is their business not Putin's who just wants this a war all his own way. We all have seen Putin's bullying tantrum.
Pretty much looks like a US vietnam era fighter jet. Just more stuff they have no idea how to use or maintain.
French colonial Africa has the same part why fighting for Ukraine ?
A lot of rubbish talk about Boots on the ground raising the stakes....foreign instructors were in Ukraine from thecstart andcRusdians have Iran and China instructors on thd ground all the time.
Talk about nothing
Absolutely. And he chose D Day celebrations to make this dumb announcement. Always offering old equipment. He’s a sad case of narcissistic behaviour. Even going to see Putin was just to look like somebody.
But these reporter not talking about the killing of so many western mercenaries and killing of NATO trainers .. may be western channels is scared to talk about 😂😂😂
Maybe it never happened...
Just like they spoke highly of Abraham tanks and made zero impact on the battle field. " Now they continue with the same noise of giving Ukraine fighter jets; guys the truth still remain Ukraine can't and never win against Russia🇷🇺.. Who remembers the noise the made about Ukraine counteroffensive which was a completely failure. " Let's see
The media love its drama.
But the western tanks have done a great job in Ukraine, the russian losses are here as evidence. The truth is, Ukraine can win against Russia and in fact, the window of opportunity created by the USA for the russian armed forces during the winter is closing rapidly.
In 2025, Russia should have lost most of its air and artillery advantages and its armed forces are already losing in Ukraine while they still have those advantages.
If Russia doesn't somehow manage to win this year (which appears less and less likely with each new day) and trump isn't elected or choses to not give up the core national interests of the USA out of nowhere, it's very easy to see how Russia is just bound to lose the war of attrition long term.
A country of 140 million people with a GDP of $2 trillion cannot hope to outproduce an alliance of 900 million people with a combine GDP of $40 trillion and access to what amounts to basically unlimited natural resources all over the world.
ps: Abrams tanks by the way, no relation to Abraham.
Why are we still concerning ourselves with russias threats? Forget about it. Seriously. Grow a spine.
After the Himars, Bradleys, and patriots, gamechangers comes new ones😂😂😂😂
Yet Russia still screams bloody murder at the prospect and tries to find new allies in their desperation, like the TALIBAN.
Yeah well... not sure those S-300 / S-400 operators have been laughing recently.
Never heard that American game changer (HIMARS) destroyed Russian game changer (S-400)?
The game completely changed since February 2022.

"heavy duty tanks" LMAO, As opposed to regular duty tanks? Too funny. They are just tanks. They use to use designations like light, heavy and medium but now they are all MBT. Main Battle Tanks or just 'tanks'
Hey (it's on) Everybody knows it's on.
More pointless escalation that won't lead to victory, but might end up dragging us deeper in.
Weren’t these shot down by harriers in the Falkland’s.
Eg a ground attack plane shooting down an air superiority fighter?
Hasn’t the harrier shot down more planes than the mirage?
NO! Argentinia used Mirage III E and the israel copy of Mirage III the IAI Dagger, Mirage 2000-5 is a much newer design then Mirage III C/E
No but Mirage 2000 shot down in Greece a F-16 in 1996
