France to provide Ukraine with 'Mirage' fighter jets | DW News

  • Ukraine's allies have already begun allowing Kyiv to use Western weapons to attack military targets inside Russia. The French leader, Emmanuel Macron, has even suggested that NATO troops could be deployed within Ukraine - to carry out training missions for example. But NATO boots on the ground in Ukraine, in whatever capacity, would be seen as a significant escalation by Russia.

Correction: The graphic at 2:06 incorrectly says ‘Long-range missiles targeting inside Russia.’ The US has eased limitations on how Ukraine can use American weapons, allowing for some strikes into Russia for the limited purpose of defending Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city. We apologize for the mistake.

      I. "Really good day for Ukraine to receive NATO warplanes"
      Really?
Won't this just prolong a hopeless struggle?
Putin is ready to make peace along the current battle lines.
Will the continuation and escalation of this senseless war help anyone?
II. "Are these NATO warplanes too little too late?"
Neither NATO, nor DW, nor Marina seems to have the slightest clue as to what the Ukrainian/NATO goal is in this war.
Russia will never allow Ukraine to become a member of NATO or retake Crimea or the Donbas.
Are NATO and Ukraine just trying to provoke WW III?
III. " Is the purpose of these NATO warplanes to attack or defend?
The best defense is a good offense.
Russia is not bluffing about the use of tactical nuclear weapons to defend the Motherland.
Almost certainly NATO weapons are going to be used in this NATO-proxy war against Russia to inflict severe damage on key Russian assets. Take, for example, the Ukrainian drone strike which destroyed over-the-horizon Russian radar near Orsk. This radar was
not directed at Ukraine, but was used primarily to detect a first strike NATO attack on Russia.
Nato is provoking a real catastrophe because Russian nuclear doctrine is clear.
When Russia's existence is threatened, she will use nuclear weapons to defend herself.
IV. "How will Russia respond to French soldiers in Ukraine?"
It requires only a firm grasp of the obvious to see that now NATO is looking for a direct confrontation between NATO troops and Russian forces.
What Marina, DW, NATO, et al do not understand is that Russia has a self confidence founded upon 'The Great Patriotic War' which leads Russians to believe that they will prevail in any conflict because they believe that they are tougher and smarter than their enemies -- eg the Wehrmacht in the past and NATO today.
Thus, Russia will eventually respond to NATO's provocations with a punch to NATO's nose: for example, a strike on NATO staging centers in Poland or the Baltic States to which NATO will have no good answer because the US, (especially under Trump), will not sacrifice NYC or LA for some obscure base in Poland that Russia has destroyed. Similarly, France and Britain will not sacrifice either Paris or London if Russia obliterates
a NATO staging area in a NATO country.
In sum, the so-called strategist, Marina, lacks basic strategic insight.
(But, on the good news front, Marina has swapped her Zelle 75% off, slightly irregular gray jacket for a brownish t-shirt from the IDF military surplus super-store's bargain barrel).

    • @aesma2522
      @aesma2522 Před 20 dny

Indeed. There is no sense in training pilots in Ukraine because that means bringing the planes in a warzone without being able to use them right away, making nice targets for Russian attacks. Better to train the pilots (we're talking about few dozen people at most) and maybe mechanics too in France alongside French pilots and mechanics, then send the planes with the trained pilots back to fight in Ukraine.

The Gripen *HANDS DOWN* takes that honor. And due to that fact, it would be far more prudent for the West to only provide Ukraine with the Gripen. Russia expected to roll tanks into Kiev in some 4 days, but Ukrainians who had NONE of the things you mention, had anti-tank weapons + OLD Soviet era weapons... and that was enough to change the course.
Russia, the world´s second largest army was not able to break Ukraine. The weapons sent have strengthened Ukraine´s defense... if you fight against the World´s second largest army, there is no easy simple weapon (that one can read that you say) that would change the war totally (beside nukes).
How can Ukraine win? They don´t win by rolling over the world´s second largest army... they can win by making this costly for Russia... by as it is now, forcing Russia into a war economic = producing weapons instead of welfare. Destroying their HUGE storage of tanks (some 13.000 estimated before the war).
Also by a tougher economic situation (sanctions), and freezing 250 billion USD of Russian funds, that might go to Ukraine. This will be seen in the Russian economy within 2 years, and will put pressure on people and oligarchs who get fed up with Putin´s crazy policies.

I'm trying to think how F-16's would be very useful here the anti air systems on both sides are pretty significant. I would think they have the range to take out some old s300 missile systems easily with the new higher ranged and older agm missiles but I don't think they could take out the s400's because the range is like 1000km for agm's and 3000km for the s400 (Although Russia often lies about their military equipment's capabilities, I can't imagine it would be off by 2000km or 66%). I wonder how they will be used it seems like ground based guided missile attacks back and forth and drones have been the most useful so far in the war. Although Russia has tons of inaccurate old artillery as well to pound cities and civilian centers. Maybe they can find gaps in the s400 detection ranges to take out some s300's and other ground based targets. But there have been reports that the Russians are jamming a lot of these systems massively lowering the effectiveness and percentage of targets destroyed. I guess they could also be used defensively against enemy air but I don't think Russia has sent many planes into Ukraine itself so far interestingly.

See, I think that this is going to be a problem if the Ukrainians get F-16's from Belgium but Mirage jets from France. Ukraine will not need two or three complex fighter jet systems to learn to fly, arm and of course maintain. This will complicate the Ukrainian military's ability to support air operations.
It would be better for the Ukrainians, to pick one airframe to employ for the next 2-4 years and evaluate the operational capabilities and the pilot's abilities and feed back on this one fighter jet relative to the Russian threats from the ground and the air.
I would like to see Ukraine have a good system that is not the most expensive to maintain, and I think that maybe the Saab Gripen might be more durable with respect to maintenance and overall operational readiness. You realize that these jets require a lot of downtown in the maintenance hangars.

The Mirage 2000-5 being sent are focused mostly on air to air combat but are quite dated even with their upgrades. They could potentially lead to Mirage 2000D sent in the future however which are a newer version that is focused on air to ground. They are still useful.

Russia does NOT have air superiority or they would be riding the skies above Ukraine. What they have is a stalemate where neither side has any superiority and hence the WW1 trench warfare tactics of building land based defenses. Actual air superiority, like over Kuwait in the 90s would completely change the war landscape and tactics from stalemate to checkmate.

@@delta_glider4362 Your comment makes no sense in terms of air superiority. Drones are not -- in today's technology -- an air superiority force. In order for "they kind of do" to make sense, Russia would have to be able to fly over Ukraine with impunity, and they are too scared to do so. They have not used even one of their advanced fighters and the mythical G5 is no where to be seen due to the humiliation of it being shot down with Western tech.
You are a "glider" not a jet and should rethink your comments.

    • @robertstennett7566
      @robertstennett7566 Před 22 dny

There is no stalemate and their never was a stalemate, you do not know anything about warfare in Ukraine. What you thought was a stalemate was Russia paused and went on the defensive while recruiting more troops when they decided they needed more troops to accomplish their mission.
Russia does air superiority and they can use it anytime they want to but they prefer to use missiles and drones when they will do the job because they loose less highly skilled pilots and expensive aircraft that way. Russia aircraft are superior to anything the West has besides F-22s and F-35s.
Your can not compare warfare in the 90s to todays warfare, warfare has completely changed due to drones and new types of sophisticated weaponry like hypersonic missiles and glide bombs.

      The media love its drama.
But the western tanks have done a great job in Ukraine, the russian losses are here as evidence. The truth is, Ukraine can win against Russia and in fact, the window of opportunity created by the USA for the russian armed forces during the winter is closing rapidly.
In 2025, Russia should have lost most of its air and artillery advantages and its armed forces are already losing in Ukraine while they still have those advantages.
If Russia doesn't somehow manage to win this year (which appears less and less likely with each new day) and trump isn't elected or choses to not give up the core national interests of the USA out of nowhere, it's very easy to see how Russia is just bound to lose the war of attrition long term.
A country of 140 million people with a GDP of $2 trillion cannot hope to outproduce an alliance of 900 million people with a combine GDP of $40 trillion and access to what amounts to basically unlimited natural resources all over the world.
