The PS2 version is the worst. It only runs in 480i, runs at 30fps during gameplay with slowdown, has lower-quality textures, water effects and shadows, has the worst load times, and the music and voices are more muffled in comparison to the other two. I also noticed some missing details in the PS2 version like the missing seagulls at the beginning of Seaside Hill. The PS2 version also runs in a lower vertical resolution than the other two at 448 pixels high, though that's small potatoes. Surprisingly, draw distance between the three looks to be the same. As for GameCube and Xbox, there's not that many differences. The water looks the best on the Xbox version (in my opinion), it loads faster, and the FMVs aren't cropped. While not showcased in the video, the Xbox version does have some slowdowns not present in the GameCube version, though it's minor.

  • @lihlin9285
    @lihlin9285 Před 2 lety +29

It's clear this game was originally made and optimized for the Gamecube before porting to others. Besides missing audio effects and less clear audio on the PS2, there's many graphical errors and textures that are inferior or missing on the PS2 and to some extent, the Xbox as well.
0:55 Starting with the loading screen, you can see the spinning logo is broken and stops spinning on the PS2. The Xbox loads the fastest, but it also has occasional spinning crashes. Only the GC spins without ever stopping or slowing down.
1:14 The PS2 has the worst character shadows since they are just all circles. The GC renders the shadows most clearly and detailed, especially noticable on Vector and has a double shadow effect. The Xbox has more simple shadows and lacks the double shadows. It's also missing the shadows to Vector's arms.
2:05 Not much different comparing the GC and Xbox. However, the GC renders Tails eyes with a brighter blue iris that the others are missing.
4:51 PS2 has a more blurry water effect. GC renders the water ripples very clearly and more detailed. It also has a subtle waveshore effect. The Xbox seems to be suffering from some sort bug since the water ripples look rather pixelated.
5:50 The Gamecube has round blue light engine exhausts coming behind the vehicles. This effect is broken or partially missing on the PS2.
Pause at 6:10. The PS2 has trouble reproducing the hovering jets behind Omega fully. The lighting also seems to be dimmed on Omega and has trouble reproducing bright reflections around the armor from the sun like the GC does to give it that shine effect. The Xbox looks the darkest and has almost no light reflections.

Xbox>GameCube>PS2. Xbox wins but not by a mile. PS2 is decent but terrible if compared to the other two. GameCube is a solid pick and you can’t go wrong with it. The clear winner would be based on controller preference if you were picking one to play, assuming you’re somewhat of a purest.
I owned a PS2 when released because I was happy with my PS1 and it was very successful. Xbox came out with no history so I didn’t want to chance it and later I found out that resolution wise, it’s a better console with even more power. GameCube I didn’t buy into when it released but for visuals, they could’ve marketed the component cables better than a China and Nintendo website only.

Dunno which is the best, but here's some neat tricks. On modded system, the Xbox version can be widescreen patched via espirral's XBE patch, and when playing in 480i, can be ran without a flicker filter.
The GameCube version should be able to be wide-screen patched too using nintendont. While the ps2 can probably use those 16:9 OPL cheats.

It was really good too. I noticed it's the only one that has the metal characters cheat in 2-Player mode. You can tell it was meant for the GameCube. The PS2 has the lowest framerate sadly, for a console that really could've done a much better job. They just didn't put much effort forth into making it for that system. Yeah. Considering games like Battle for Bikini Bottom, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 - American Wasteland, Incredibles, Burnout and even GTA PS2 Trilogy play better than Sonic Heroes despite all being on Renderware. PS2 owners deserve PS2 ports because PS2 might be the weakest, but it's still capable. Just look at Jak & Daxter, Twisted Metal Black, Final Fantasy X, Silent Hill 3 and Devil May Cry 3. There's no excuse that the PS2 version of Heroes (Or any of the other Sonic games released on the console) will be this bad. @@AWISECROW The PS2 runs internally at 224P interlaced to 448i upscaled to 480i. that's why it looks so blurry on a modern TV.
Fun bit of trivia for you, the PS2 was supposed to be a 240P machine with anti-aliasing, but the anti-aliasing was scrapped last minute.
Now the Emotion Engine has to do both CPU and GPU work which is why the PS2 often runs at half the frame rate of its Dreamcast, GameCube and Xbox counterparts. Because valuable CPU power is being taken up by the GPUs lack of power, which in turn kills frame times on the PS2, so it cannot manage 60fps without major tricks involved.
This is also why many more demanding games run at similar performance to the N64 (224P - 240P and 20 - 30fps) such as Shadow of The Collossus.

    1. The PS2 version is the only one to run at 30fps.
    2. Loading times are better on Xbox and much worse on PS2. ( 0:53 )
    3. If you look at the water on the right you will notice that the reflection effect on the PS2 has been greatly reduced compared to the Game Cube and Xbox, the texture quality on the wall on the left also appears slightly lower, but this could be an effect of the lower resolution from PS2. ( 1:12 )
    4. The Xbox version has some random lags that the PS2 and Game Cube versions do not have. ( 1:14 )
    5. The 3D models in the PS2 version are more polygonal than those used in the Game Cube and Xbox version, this is very noticeable in Tails' head and ear openings or in Knuckles' gloves. ( 2:07 )
    6. The PS2 version does not have dynamic shadows for the characters, just a black ball shadow. ( 2:28 )
    7. Texture quality in the PS2 version is reduced on walls. ( 4:32 )
    8. The quality of the water effect on the PS2 is much lower quality while on the Xbox it is kinda glitchy, on the Game Cube it looks better and matches the PC version. ( 4:51 )
Conclusion: The Game Cube version is definitely the best, it's almost as if the game was made with the Cube hardware in mind.

The only real downside (that anon7906 didn't realize) is that the GC version even on the Dolphin emulator, the audio is 32khz instead of 48khz that the PS2 and Xbox can do. Likely cause they're straight up DVD players and can deliver proper Dolby Digital instead of 32khz Pro Logic 2. The Xbox version is the highest quality version of the game in every category. Either way, the PS2 version was sadly the most played one due to being the best selling console.
Even though in my opinion the PS2 is a crappy DVD player trying to pass itself off as a console.

Would the PS2 version have turned out a lot better?

calling the ps2 a “crappy dvd player trying to pass itself off as a console” is pretty goofy considering games like god of war 2 and okami exist, games that look almost as impressive as any of the best offerings of the xbox and gamecube- all while being an older and more versatile machine. It easily could have run heroes as well as the xbox and gamecube, but the poet was a last minute call for sonic team.

So fun fact; the game wasn't even supposed to be made for the PS2. The original plan was to make it Xbox and GameCube exclusive, but Sony (as they did to everyone that gen) strong armed SEGA into making a PS2 port otherwise they wouldn't let them release another game on the platform. Which was a big deal as the PS2 was and continued to outsell the other two platforms by a large margin, and they couldn't risk that kind of install base.
So the game had to hastily be ported to PS2, manpower was taken from the other versions, the development became a mess, and it got to a point where QA testing basically said that if the bug wasn't stopping you from beating the game, just don't report it.
It's worth noting that SEGA was well aware of just how weak the PS2 was and actually tried porting the Sonic Adventure games to the system, but the PS2 just didn't play nice with the engines those games ran on.

Also, get this. Apparently, the 50 Hz setting on the PAL PS2 version runs FASTER than the 60 Hz setting. I'm not joking.
Also, is there really no way to set the PAL Xbox console to 60 Hz? Not even a hidden feature like holding the B button during the console boot up sequence which Gamecube has?

@@ScatterbrainPete There is, but Australia got shafted even hard than other PAL regions sometimes.
My UK PAL versions are fine, but I've got a mate over in Sydney who has the AU PAL version which runs noticeably... different in comparison.

GameCube version being more optimized than the Xbox version it can hold the 60 FPS better than the Xbox version? Damn lazy optimization despite some cool effects and Xbox being more powerful. Maybe if the game was compatible on Xbox Series X/S then it would've take over the GameCube version's throne and making it the best version of it on home consoles and iron out the FPS drops.

XBOX and GameCube are almost on par. Playstation 2 lags, literally and figuratively, behind, as usual. Let's face it, PS2 was shit. People only jumped on it because of brand recognition and it being a cheap DVD player.
