  • Presenting the exclusive, CZcams video version of our full podcast episode, “Cosmic Queries Potpourri,” complete with a few glitches that got edited out of the podcast! We've got another eclectic mix of questions submitted by our fans on social media, selected by co-host Chuck Nice, and answered by Neil deGrasse Tyson. You’ll learn why the Great Attractor isn’t such a big deal anymore and how we’re searching for gravity waves using LIGO. Neil explains pressure differentials and “the bends” and what wouldn’t happen to you if you traveled between space ships without a space suit. Plus dark matter, fusion reactors, nuclear bombs, spectroscopes, black holes, spacetime, information theory and so much more.

    I really enjoy chuck and Neil together. In some of Neil's uploads where he's doing a live performance in front of an audience, he has two other comedians to accompany the show... Probably so some people don't lose interest. The comedians often ruin it for me simply because they interrupt and go off topic because they know nothing of the science. Although Chuck doesn't have a mass wealth of knowledge in astrophysics, he contributes as much as he can. Chuck is a perfect mixture of funny and knowledgeable.

    Potpourri is french (Pot Pourri) meaning literally "Rotten pot". It is used to describe a plate/bowl/pot put on a table in which there are dried (or rotten...?) flowers/herbs that produces a pleasant smell. It's the pre-industrial equivalent of febreeze.
    EDIT: It evolved to mean a mix of different things (like the mix of herbs in a potpourri).

    30:20.... NOOOOO!!!!! you do not hold your breath in a vacuum.... not if you want to survive.
    the standard drill for surviving exposure to hard vacuum is to breath out and close your eyes.
    by holding your breath you'll end up with a pulmonary edema (i.e bleeding in the lungs) due to the air expanding within them. and breathing out in a vacuum will result in frost bite in your mouth, throat and lungs. so you exhale before entering hard vacuum and get through it as quickly as you can before the vacuum causes the moisture on your skin to evaporate resulting in frost bite
    crazy thing is the vacuum feels warm because there is nothing to conduct heat away through convection yet you still get frost bite because of evaporation due to lack of pressure

    • @supernaturalswampaids8083

      It'd feel warm but it would hurt, right?

    • @crwydryny
      @crwydryny Před 7 lety +4

      Player Name it's actually kind of weird as it doesn't feel hot or cold but due to the lack of pressure the oils and moisture on your skin will evaporate and freeze the surface of the skin resulting in mild frost bite. it would actually be worse in moist areas (eyes, nose, mouth) while your skin would feel more like they just had a cold breeze blow over it for a second and that's about it... space is weird

    • @brandenfarbanger3935

    I'm not sure if this is an educated question but I'll give it a shot: Could it be possible that those galaxies/objects that are being "attracted" toward this "Great Attractor" are actually being pushed in this direction by some force opposite them? Another way to word this would be "Are these galaxies showing a rebound effect/showing an inherited trajectory due to some incredible force acting on them?"
    Would love to hear your thoughts

      That's far less likely. In order for your hypothesis to be correct there would have to be multiple sources oriented such that they're pushing these galaxies into one direction which would also mean that other things would be pushed away from them.
      Furthermore there aren't really any galaxy level pushing forces

    Energy exchange limit or limit for two point to interact.
    it is a bit hard to write down this thought for me.
    if two points have relative speed more then speed of light, they not able to interact.
    but they can interact through the third point. (exactly like dark matter)

    It was actually the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge that made us discover the phenomena of the bends. I would really like to hear what you know about the gravitational distortions in the fabric of space, I understand that these waves of gravity cause the fabric of space to move&shift, and that both matter&dark matter have an impact on the waves, but I guess my question is, what makes dark matter? How does dark matter differ from matter, and is it possible that there are other forces that cause the dark matter to move, that we can't yet explain due to the laws of multi-verses

    I saw not long ago this video that said that if you add all the positive natural numbers from 1 to infinity, you get -1/12.
    I wonder how that can be explained since they said physics is sort of the basis for it. :D.

      There'd have to be something with a far arger mass than our sun. If that happened, planets would either fall into the sun, or into the subzero darkness.

    Hey Dr. Niel deGrasse Tyson as a scuba diver i know the number one rule is to NEVER hold your breathe, reason being the air in your lungs can expand and cause serious damage to your lungs. So you would not get to 'hold your breathe' before leaving an airlock you'd be left with whatever oxygen is dissolved in your system at the time of depressurization or deal with your lungs ripping apart inside of you. Just a little tip :)

    What causes the gasses to rush out of the air lock so fast. Do Gas partials repel each other does not the gravity of the ship and the particles attract each other?

    • @TheDarbicus
      @TheDarbicus Před 9 lety +1

      John Phillips Yeah the gas particles repel each other. Gasses always attempt to take the shape of the container they are in. The space between each atom stretches and the air lock would get extremely cold as the gas leaves. The gravity of the ship is virtually nothing compared to the speed that the gas would escape... of course there might be a small layer or attraction of gas. But it would be so small that you wouldn't be able to breathe.

    • @JohnPhillips2
      @JohnPhillips2 Před 9 lety

      Darby Rathbone thanks for the reply. I understand the gas taking up the shape of the container. I seen experiments where fish tank is filled with lighter than air gas, and the gas would be the only thing in the container. I was just imagining that gas particles would have their own gravity to attract to itself and the ship to some even if small effect. What you say does make sense.

    is it possible that gravity could be an effect from small black holes?

    • @LinusE
      @LinusE Před 7 lety

      gravity is a force within space, all bodies (planets, black holes & stars) have gravitational force. So if there was small black holes scattered around we would not only discover them but we would probably be drawn in to them eventuelly and we'd notice this
