  • Decided for this build series to make something from a simpler time and go back to the routes of RC sailing by making myself a free sailing model boat.
    Picked up this Dumas Ace racing sloop 17 for about £30 so its a nice cheap kit well within everyone's budget.No RC is going in this model (though it would be simple to do by just adding a hatch) this one is just a trim and let it be free on your local pond or boating lake, thought it would be nice to try something less complicated and more vintage might be fun, if it spawned the hobby then it can't be all that bad?
    The kits are pretty much all wood and seem fairly simple to build, the mahogany is a bit of a bugger to work with, however, and though a beginners kit smaller youngsters would probably need some help with construction. I think it's a good kit for a granddad to build with the grand kits and would be an interesting introduction to model boat building for them.
    After seeing lots of people struggle with the instructions online thought I would make a build log of each step by step instruction to point out bits where people might struggle during the building process to help out my fellow modellers.
    Anyway I hope you found the video helpful if you are making one of these free sailing kits, and if your not making one...well I hope you just enjoyed it

    Wow - I talked my father into buying one of these kits for me back when I was about 10. I didn't have the skills and neither did he. When I snapped a chine while trying to bend it into place near the bow, I abandoned it. I was absolutely crushed (and believe me, my parents were NO help!). Lot of water under the bridge since then! Today, it would be a nice little project, if I only had the time and space. I'm going to enjoy watching this build!

      Ah at ten as well I struggled with a few bits on this and Im 30 and have built tonnes of kits, Sorry to hear it was abandoned. I think I break a few bits in this along the way. If you ever wanted to revist this kit they go for about 30 to 40 quid online I think and for the price I would say they are well worth it.My builds finished now just cant seem to get the weather to film the maiden voyage of it.

    Hi there, looking good so far. I think with all timber construction boat kits, there seems to be a lot of sanding back to get the shape of the hull just right. Great work so far, keep it going, looking forward to the next instalment. Take care, keep well and all the best for 2022. 😉😊😉

      Yeah accuracy through sanding seems to be the order of the day with these kits, but think there is a charm with the wood grain on the finished product.Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you :)

    Dumas boats makes some great model boats, that one doesn't happen to be one of them! Some experience building wooden boats helps

      Very true! It does have some faults but then again it is really cheap,Was a fun introduction though and has sailed many times.(Though the free sailing aspect can lead to trouble XD )

      I recommend using an epoxy glue, spread on thin, with a plastic spreader. Don't use a varnish, too much work. Varnish on topsides only.

      Thank you I will bear that in mind for future builds, I'd like to make an RC sail boat from a kit,any recommendations?

    I haven't built a wooden kit for a few years now. I do have a few in my stock unopened. I will get to them one day.

      What have you got in your stock?I enjoyed the build but the sanding indoors was not great this time of year

      @@scalestuff1066 some Guillows planes rubber powered. I think I have two Spitfires and a Mustang, and at least one or two others. All charity shop finds, too good to pass up, but not sure when I will get to them.

      @scalestuff1066  Před 2 lety +1

      Ah nice, I used to make a lot of them, lock down grounded the planes for a year and with no breakages I never had space to start adding more to the collection. They are tricky to get flying but great to build. Nice finds, I have started checking my local charity shops now,but sadly just a few over priced old airfix kits

    Hi,
    I rescued this kit while clearing my father-in-law's loft - so many spiders! - and was hoping to give it a go.
    But, your tribulations with this kit have suggested that it might be a bit more than I can manage right now seeing as I haven't built a balsa kit for 30+ years and that came out somewhat malformed!
    I don't suppose you can point me towards an easy balsa glider or rubber band powered plane I could start off with. Or even a handy website with the same info? I'm based in the UK if that helps?

      @scalestuff1066  Před 2 lety +2

      Alright mate first I'd like to say I wish you luck with your spider loft heirloom
      The vintage model company do some nice kits theres based in the uk and the kits are very well made,should be easy to find with a quick google search,they do a good selection of beginners kits to to get to grips with the old methods
      Hope that helps ans wish you the best of lucj
