  • I ordered these two trees from fastgrowingtrees.com. So far, so good! It's amazing that you can have 10 different varieties of fruit on 2 plants! Incredible!

    Hey neighbor. As someone who has grown fruit trees before, be sure you hit those trees with dormant oil spray in March just prior to bud growth to kill off any insect eggs and any fungus spores. UT Ag extension office in Columbia has good data for you to grow and spray those trees and the schedule to follow. Good luck to you. I have about 8 trees coming from Stark Brothers in a couple of weeks. Apples and pears. Planting some peaches later in the summer for fall growth.

      That's great advice, thank you! My local nursery (Riverbend Nursery) just posted something about dormant oil. I didn't really think much of it but now I'll be sure to pick some up and use it. Thanks for lookin' out for me on that! 😅

      @@inchwormgardens Well, you have 3 phases to fruit tree spraying. Dormant oil pre blossom, fungicide during blossom (to keep your apples rotting from the inside out when they morph into apples), and regular overall tree spray for the insects and fungus/diseases that will come after your trees all summer. DO not spray fruit trees with regular tree spray during blossom time. Only fungicide. Otherwise you will kill the pollinators. I really don't know a good way to do organic treatment of fruit trees as they are just a salad bar to insects and disease.

    How are the 5 in 1 Apple and cherry trees now in summer of 2024? Please make an update video on them. Thanks!

    • @inchwormgardens
      @inchwormgardens  Před měsícem

      Hello! Thanks for asking! I should do a video on that. They're growing pretty well but not getting any real fruit yet... I got ONE small cherry that got eaten by birds immediately. Many small apple blossoms that turned to small fruit and then fell off. There are 3 green apples that are growing now though! Fingers crossed!

I suggest Navaho for you if you don’t have those blackberries yet. I’m gonna order some. I was living in SC, but now NC. Have a great week!! Looking forward to the next video!!

      Thank you! I was impressed with the trees too. They're all in the ground and doing well so far. Our property is a little odd. Half of it isn't very usable as there's a steep bank that leads to a little runoff creek. It's super shady from big trees growing along the creek. I'm taking a little bit of risk planting that apple tree there. Hopefully it gets enough sun!

      Hey there! Thanks for checking. I wish I had a better update. The trees have gotten tall but no signs of fruit yet... I've had some pest pressure that I'm trying to manage too. The apples have beautiful, fragrant flowers that do form into small fruit but then they just fall off. Not sure what's going on but I'll keep trying!

      The trees are doing pretty good I think! The cherry tree has a lot of nice leafy growth, some pretty white flowers, but no fruit set. The apple tree grew about 3 feet, put on some lovely white/pink flowers and it looks like we have some fruit set on those! Hopefully in Fall I might have a couple apples! Thanks for checking :)

    • @inchwormgardens
      @inchwormgardens  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah! It's common practice for fruit trees to be grafted onto a different "root stock". They use the roots of a strong, reliable variety and graft on a different variety that is prized for it's fruit production but maybe doesn't have a vigorous root system. So you get the best of both worlds.
      Grafting multiple varieties together is much less common but it can be done! We'll see how it goes!

    Fun fact all 5 of those apples have mixed gen with all 5.
    So if you wanted to plant a seed from any of the 5 on the tree on bolth apple and cherry will have all 5 genetics in it as it grows and it will affect how it grows.
    Question when it fruits can you plant a few seeds from each type to see how it changes them.
    Oh plant the same kinds you got but not from the mix trees and see how the seeds grow kinda like a control even though none of them will grow to type lol 😆.
