How to PUSH during labor | Best positions to push baby out!

- We've all watched that scene in any given movie where the mother is sweaty and screaming while pushing 3-4 times to deliver her baby, but what is that experience really like?!? How do you actually push at the end of your labor and get the baby out?!? This video covers that topic and so much more! Did you know there are actually positions that can help you get the baby out faster so you're not pushing for hours and hours?! Certain positions will help to open your pelvic outlet, so that the baby can rotate, come down and ultimately come out! On average first time mothers will push between 1-3hrs when delivering their first baby! Since I started implementing these positions as a labor and delivery nurse I have not had a mother push longer than about an hour! I've seen more vaginal deliveries and less situations where the mother pushes for hours and then either has to have a vacuumed delivery or go for a c-section. My goal is to give you mamas every opportunity to have the easiest and most enjoyable labor and delivery experience and I would hate after all the effort to get you to the point of pushing for the finale to end with you physically and mentally exhausted headed for a c-section. I want to equipped you to be proactive and empowered in your labor and delivery process! Go forth and push your baby into this world with confidence, less tearing, less operative deliveries and an easier recovery!
Wow.. im watching this on the day before my delivery.. 😭 praying for a normal delivery.. pls pray for me..
Hi how was your delivery?
I’m praying for you and how was your delivery also I’m 29 weeks pregnant with twins and I’m due nov 21 2020
@@echoverigan8825 how are you 29 weeks due nov 21 if I’m 33 weeks due December 25? Should t you be due in January?
Is it because twins?
Wouldn’t you be like 30-31 weeks
Great advice. I totally agree with you about asserting yourself about what position you want to be in. I gave birth to my first baby on all fours. It felt natural and opened everything up to let baby out, also no tear. Second baby came quicker and when i was ready to push the midwife and doctor started putting the stirrups in and I said "no I'm getting on my hands and knees like first time" and I just put myself in that position. They were a bit flustered but I didn't care because I was birthing my baby how I wanted. My partner was also supportive of what I wanted.
Yes girl!!! You are the one birthing your baby! Everyone else is there to support you! Awesome job following your own needs!
U go girl...I originally started in all fours but was sooo exhausted I ended up on my back lol still got the natural birth I wanted 😎
GOOD JOB MICHELLE 👏 👏 👍 👌 🤣 😉 💪 👏 👍 👌 🤣
My doctor said I don’t have a choice but to be on my back🙃
@@Moshito_mThrow the whole doctor away. You should push the way you want to. Not the doctor's choice. If the doctor does not respect your wishes on how to push, you have the right to fire them and ask for another doctor. 😊😊
38 weeks today. Wow this is the best demonstration on pushing, especially how you show this in a hospital setting. Thank you!
You are so welcome! I'm definitely more of a visual learner, so I try to incorporate real settings whenever possible! Good luck to you!
I am so happy for you guys and I am so excited to meet my baby sister today
I’m 16 weeks pregnant, my baby boy is due November 2nd. I pray for a safe and easy birth🥰
👏🙏🙏
Congrats on your baby❤️
Not long!
@@calicairns5064 I started to go into labor early, I’m 4 1/2 cm right now and doc said that I should have home by next week😭
Hy, was your delivery easy ? Plz share your experience
Really helpful and encouraging. I’m having some anxiety rn not from thinking about labor just another mood swing. And this helped.
My due is nov 21 please pray for me to let it go fast and safe I’m a first time mom 😢
Mine is due 2nd nov and baby #2. Wish you all the best.
I definitely will! And just to set up realistic expectations of a fast labor... Usually first time mom's labor on average 24hrs from start to finish, so if it takes a little longer than you were expecting please know that it's perfectly normal!
I'm a first time biological mom as well. Becoming informed on the process is a positive step in the right direction. 🙏🏽🙏🏽❤❤👣👣
You’ve got it! Once you’re in your 3rd trimester eat 6 dates daily and drink red raspberry leaf tea! Both are great for your uterus! I had a 5 hr labor with my first child and am praying for another speedy delivery for my second now that I’m 38wks!
Using my boyfriends account but I’m due on the 28th and I’m terrified! This was helpful to learn different ways that can be comfortable for us thank you so much
The last option with the bar for delivery seems the best route. Thank you!
I am due next month with my first baby and have been intentionally watching a lot of content on exercises to do to prepare for labour and vids like this one which talk about the difference positions one can opt for. Thank you so much for such educational content. I will be delivering at my local clinic which does have a good facility, but I have been realising that I should find out how versed are they with the different pushing positions because generally we know of just the one where the mom lays on her back. Thanks so much for these, I am super nervous but I must say that these videos comfort me a lot 🙏🏽.
Watching this as a Grandma to be! I sent the video to my daughter who is due July 10th for her firstborn. I never had this type of instruction, so this is a blessing for my girl to birth her daughter. Thank you!
You are so welcome! 😊🥰💕
Same here mine due is also in July
Same here...but trying a vbac...all the best to us
As a dad to be with a wife(1st time mother to be) in November, I sent it too to her. I found it helpful and am sure it will be supportive.
3rd pregnancy, 2 natural births no epidural by choice 😅. Breathing techniques works it really ease my pain. Everyone is different, I’m very in tune with my body so focused breathing and concentration worked wonders for me. I pushed both pregnancies within the hour. my doctor was like “my goodness Katherine you’re a beast 😂” she delivered both babies. Baby #3 same process it will be another natural birth no epidural 😂
I literally want to know how?
Geesh 😂
Pls share how to make it better 🙏
I’m on my 3rd pregnancy as well. First came out 30min after water broke, no epidural. Second had some difficulty and was induced, no epidural. Plans for the third are to once again have no epidural and hopefully 🤞🏼 an easier time birthing.
36 weeks here and I am ready, thanks for this info 😘😘
Watching this as a new labor and delivery nurse, this is so helpful! Thanks 💕
I'm due with my 3rd in about 2.5 weeks and I'm nervous as heck. Thank God I came across this video for different positions I had no idea about. Will be trying some since I want to avoid the epidural at all costs this time. Thanks for the video! So much information 😊
You are absolutely capable of doing it!!! Good luck to you and congratulations!

This is EXTREMELY helpful information! I’m due in April so I’m glad to see all these different positions to birth in. I was worried about having to birth strictly on my back, but my provider says I can birth however.
Yes Mama, you can move however you need to in order to cope and follow what feels natural to you!
squatting is the best way or standing up
Wow congratulations
Look for legasi birth, There you See real birth.
I live in Sweden and i give birth before 2 weeks I use all this position and it helps a lot . Thank you so much karolinska hospital Stockholm I really appreciate all the hospital stuff ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You are so welcome!!! Congratulations!!! 🥰💞😘
I’m very nervous about labor 🥺 I’m a first time mom. A lot going through my head. I’m due any day now🙌🏼💕 keep us in your prayers. And I pray I have a fast delivery
When you find your thoughts spiraling turn your focus to your breath. The sensation of your chest rising and falling. Go for a walk. Write down your thoughts, fears, concerns and then write down specifically what you want to happen. Once you do that, see what you can control and what you cannot. Write each thing you can't control on a separate sheet of paper. Read it then crumple it up and throw it away because you can't control it and therefore you have to let your mind let go of your grip on it. Let me know if that helps!
Congratulations, Omg same here I'm due until January 9, tell me how it goes.
How was it?
Really love this video. The hospital I’m giving birth at as the squat bar. No other birthing classes I took showed me how to use it! Two thumbs up!!
I gave birth to 4 children using breathing, relaxation and massage techniques between 1982 and 1999.
These are the techniques I used- thank you.
I'm a grandma now and advising my 2nd daughter on how to use these breathing and squatting techniques to deliver her 1st baby, who's due to arrive early February. Not long now! 🙏🏻
Thank you for your video ❤❤
I’m currently 34 weeks. I’m due June 10th. This is my first pregnancy. As my due date approaches I’m getting more nervous 😩 praying for a safe delivery 🙏🏾🤍
Wishing you a speedy and safe delivery!
I'm due 22nd and I tell you, the nerves are really kicking in. But not to worry, you both will surely make it out safe and sound. Sending my warm hugs 😍
Due June 10th too! You got this!
Im also due june 10th but we induce my labor and im having a baby today, like right now😂😂, i hope you have a safe delivery🤗🤗
Today is June 10th!! Did you have your baby yet??
Oh shoot, and here I had thought that the squat was one of the best positions. I didn't know it increased the risk of tearing! I will try to aim for the hands and knees position, or anything other than directed pushing on my back. I'm only 21 weeks along, but all this is good to know early on!
Great inputs, Haley. Mothers who has you as an attending nurse will be forever grateful to you. Teaching them to properly breathe through every contraction is a way to relax the muscles down there instead of tensing up. Babies come out whether mother will push or not. FER, fetal ejection reflex is baby's part of the birth process. This is possible when drugs are not administered though. So guiding them to breathe deep and long in every contraction instead of fighting the wave will help them progress faster actually than any drugs. Kudos to your heart for the mothers.
Thank you!!! 💞🥰💗 And thank you for the added education!!!
@@PregnancyBirthParenting101 The pleasure is ours.
Thank you! 34 weeks today. This helped a lot, because I was thinking about squatting but really don’t want to, so these positions showed me that there are more easier ways than laying down other than just squats.
You are so welcome!!! Yes, girl! You have options! 🤗🥰😘
Would you consider viewing CZcams video 'The free birth of our twins'. The vertical position ensures any poo in mum's bowel falls way to the ground, maintaining sterility of the opening to the birth canal. Avoiding tearing and cutting by 'Birth Canal Widening' to 10cm diameter prior to birth, by Aniball, Epi-no Delphine Plus birth facilitating devices or finger tips (Wikipedia UK 'Perineal Massage') or visit my CZcams channel. Thank you.
Currently 39 weeks and 2 days with my first baby and starting to get super nervous about labor and delivery :D this was really helpful! Thank you!
Had everything gone smoothly?
Hahahaha I love how you described the doctor coming in. That's great 🤣
lol
I’m 39 weeks and 1 day. Can’t wait to get to this point!! This video is really helpful, thank you ❤️
Congratulations!! You are SO close!!! 💞😍😘 And you are so welcome!!!
Did you do these techniques if so did they help?
Thank you so much ladies!!
Im 35 weeks and a day wuth my first and very anxious about the birth especially with my lack of movement due to my health issues. This video has been very informative and has shown me positions i didnt even know about, i only really knew of the first and the kneeling one and i know i definitely cant do the first. But the side one where you had your knees together but feet apart and possibly the kneeling one i may actually be able to do. So this has eased one of my anxieties relating to birth. So thank you for this video 😊
I’m due with my 7th baby and I’ve had everything from hospital, water birth, home birth, posterior, to c-section with my 6th almost 6 years ago because of being breach.
Now going for a VBAC at a hospital with a supportive team that will even deliver breach. Your videos have been very helpful! I tried spinning babies to flip my baby, but he would not budge. My other babies would always change from transverse to head down in active labor.
Even though I am trained in birth education, your calmness, tips, and the reassurance that mother has the choice is incredibly comforting/helpful. Thank you for the great videos!
🥰💞😘 Thank YOU so much for that wonderful feedback!!! If you feel like the baby has flipped to head down or your provider does an external cephalic version and flips the baby, manually manipulating the baby by using ultrasound and hands on your belly, then wear a postpartum band (obviously a larger size than what you would need postpartum) to try to keep baby from flipping back to breach. Wishing you the best of luck Mama because you can absolutely do it!!!
Great video. The lithotomy position is what I do during all my births. It feels good lifting my legs up while I push. With all the pushing you did in the lithotomy position, surprised ur water didn't break & the baby didn't crown
I love this video I am going into labor I am 40 weeks pregnant
I am having my baby boy tomorrow
7th baby!!! You’re really strong. Congratulations on number 7!!
Yes this is very helpful for me I'm a first time Mom I'm due in September 11
Love this ❤ i will definitely use these positions when i give birth 🤰❤
Thank you so much i never knew there where other positions i could push im currently 16weeks day 3 with my second baby
This was very helpful and I never knew it was other positions besides the 1st. I’m 20 weeks with my 2nd baby but getting more educated this time since I’m a adult (was a teen with my 1st). Thank you for this video ❤️
You are so welcome! Congratulations! Education is so important, but make sure you're getting it from the right resources because the internet has a lot of misinformation out there! Check out www.spinningbabies.com and www.evidencebasedbirth.com
@@PregnancyBirthParenting101 Really sorry for the question, but... What if a woman makes umm... poop while standing her bum to the doctor's face? What will the doctor catch instead of a baby? It really bothers me 😞😞😞
@@irinaberseneva9635one of the nurses I believe will come and clean up the poop, It's nothing to worry about, what to worry about is if your baby poops while you giving birth to it while it's still in the birth canal. I'm not an expert this is what I have learned from experienced mother's.
@@irinaberseneva9635 you can ask for an enema. Doctors don’t give it today, but they used to when my mom was delivering children. Knowing that I asked for one before contractions were bad. Knowing you’re clear of poo helps you to feel better knowing you’re pushing just the baby out.
Same here lol
Thank you!!! I’m 38 1/2 weeks with my second and was not told about any of these besides the 1st position.
Good luck to you Mama! Let us know how it goes! 💞😘
Great video I’ll try and use one of these positions. I’ll be a first time mom and my due date is February 8th of 2021. My husband and I are both very excited to meet our baby girl. 🤗❤️🤰🏻👧👣🎀
Happy due date!!!! 🤗😍💞
Have u delivered? Btw congrats!
helpful info!
delivering my 2nd child in 4 weeks, and scared 💩less. I think I have PTSD from the first delivery. and my 1st was a dream delivery! 5 hour labor 20 minute pushing. but still OUCHY, went all natural.
Wow, that's amazing!!! Just remember to focus on your breath whenever you feel sensations that feel overwhelming in your body. You got this!! 😘👍🏼💗💞
Due in April and already feeling pressured to do it on my back.. I think it would be better as a 1st time mom to use gravity to my advantage like you did in the video. I’ll just have to be louder about it.
I'm doing embryo adoption. Praying we conceive through this miracle. And why I'm already looking at delivery videos is beyond me 😂
Because you are excited and having faith that it will work! All good things! 🙏🏼💞😘

Thanks, Haley! I'm writing a novel and needed some information on the birthing process (since my births were c-sections). Your descriptions were excellent! The book is scheduled for a Fall 2022 release. Let me know how I did.

This video was very helpful, as I'm due in 3 weeks and my doctor doesn't seem to be very receptive of non-traditional positions, but I think I can suggest certain compromises that I've seen here so we can both be more comfortable.

Amazing I'm pregnant wit my second one n praying for a healthy n safe delivery
I am 32 weeks, and I am nervous about the pain and not knowing what and how to take control. I felt you were talking to me from the position where you faced the bed, held on and push and as well as the squat bar. I will be asking my Dr. at my next visit, if they have that in the hospital room. Thanks this was really informative, especially because you are pregnant , and in the field and very clear explanation. Thanks 🥰
Girl, YOU GOT THIS!! Trust your body and know that on the other side of each contraction is a nice break!
Being a first time and this video appeared on CZcams I want to say it was very helpful and I didn’t know there were a lot of positions for delivery

due April 23rd, also video did really help a lot as I've heard people say some labour and delivery nursers only allowing to push on there back
@@jessicaunderwood-cox575 yeah, I haven't done a ton of research, so idk if my sources are the best, but I've seen a doctor or two say that lying on your back is one of the worst positions to be spending majority of labor in
When I was in labor my SIL brought my son to the ER and my husband walked down to be with him until he went back home. So I was laboring alone for a few hours and at one point I was leaning on the head of the bed and the nurse came in to up my pitocin and she kind of mumbled but I still heard her. She said "oh great, one of THOSE MOMS" I looked at her and asked what the heck that was suppose to mean. She looked at me with a shocked/surprised look. I told her she wasn't my nurse anymore. She said there wasn't anymore nurses available. Then I told her I'd take no nurse over her and that she wasn't allowed back in my room. I was going to leave a review, but I wasn't in labor for long and had such amazing post partum nurses that I wasn't thinking about it when I left and I had forgotten her name.
If she had asked I would've told her that I was having alot of back pain and leaning forward helped a little.
Good for you Mama!!! Way to advocate for yourself and not accept that terrible treatment!

Girl, you GOT THIS!!! Know that you are fully capable of doing this and that your body was made for it!!!

Girl I’m 10 weeks pregnant and I’m feeling the same way. 😭😩
😂😂
Pregnant with bub #11 here. I've found on my hands and knees made Labor a LOT easier. But every woman is different.
My tips are:
1. Remember your body was built for this. Yes, it'll hurt. But only for a short time in the scheme of things. We have extremely good medical care only a call away.
2. Breathe slowly and try to relax as much as you can. Breathing too rapidly will wear you out faster and increases your risk of needing intervention. (Forceps, vacuum etc)tensing up your body will also wear you out more quickly and increase your pain. Gas and air can be a great way to help you have something to focus on other than the pain.
3. Choose carefully who you want in the room with you when you give birth. The last thing you probably need is umpteen people in the room, tension or arguments breaking out. Don't be afraid to leave people out if they have the ability to make you tense up.
4. While I recommend trying to give birth without pain meds, don't be a hero. If you are struggling to cope with the pain, it's ok. You're not a failure or less of a woman, speak up!
5. Be kind to your partner and the medical professionals looking after you. While it's difficult, some of these medics have delivered hundreds of babies and have learnt a thing or two. Try and listen to their instructions and follow through. But speak up if something doesn't feel right. And as for your birth partner, husband's etc. Often they can't stand to see you in pain and don't know how to respond. 😊
I am 39 weeks pregnant and ya I agree and I’m still scared shitless
Thank you for sharing! This is very informative. My due will be on April 5, 2021. Thanks
Congratulations!! That's right around the corner! 💗🙏🏼👍🏼

I am one of the lucky women who can push babies out no problem. My first pregnancy, my water broke at 1:15 AM and my daughter was born at 3:34 AM. I didn't have any contractions until my water broke and they started at 3 minutes apart. The Doctor barely made it into the room in time, but the L&D staff was amazing! I'd definitely recommend having a birth plan printed out so you can just relax and focus on your delivery with minimal interruptions. Also have a couple back up plans in place, just in case things dont go as planned.
You are what we in the field call a unicorn 🦄!!! Every now and then we see a first time Mama have this experience and it's so amazing! However, it's not the norm. Most first time Mama's are in labor from start to finish for 24hrs on average.

Guys I have had 1 false labor but idk if this one is real but I feel contractions.
I wonder why the doctors and the nursing stuff never mention about these different positions. At least they should also guide in the same manner.
Very informational 👍🏻
They're not all trained in them unfortunately
Because supine position is the only position they are comfortable with in monitoring the babies. 🥺
Thanks 🙏
Thank you this will help me and I will deliver baby normally

Lol I try to keep it light because if you can laugh in labor then you're having a good time!
Lol that looks so easy I’m still so nervous though I’m due in May with my second baby. But this one I want to be natural and I’m chickening out lol I got this I know but I’m too small and is just too much comments that don’t help at all.

Please pray for me.
You got this Mama!!!!
Thanks a lot for all the info i need to know about pushing! I’m 3months preggy and i will apply all of those when it’s time to push!
Congratulations!! You are so welcome!! 🥰😘
Thanks for that information dear am 4months pregnant waiting for that day to come.
@@PregnancyBirthParenting101But in my country, doctor coerce to lay flat on table and bend knees, and even lay a long 'Fabric sheet on belly till knees' ony gynac can see our parts from other end while we are coerced to lay flat and look at ceiling whole time and not question anything, doctor only puts hands inside our birth canal, does not tell us anything abt pushing or baby progress instead lock our feet in stirrup and 'Strongly press belly unnaturally some kind of painful fundus pressure', pull baby, cut our vag with scissor and do all medical procedure directly on other end tge moment we lay flat on bed upon their coercion, that We cannot see progress of baby crowining, they will scold us, and shout with abusive vulgar words about our sexuality if we demand autonomy and self-dignity
Women here think that doctors pull out babies from women's still body, and not know that woman can do hard work to eject baby, when I say women need to move in labor to faciitate baby moving down canal, even 'Doctors' show disbelief, forgwt abt mother
Thank you ☺️
Thanks for all the moves 🤣😂
Cool thanks for sharing. My due is on February 2021....some how excited.
You are so welcome! Congratulations!!! 💞🤗😘
I am due June 21st
Congratulations!!
I’m due in feb to 2021, first time kind of scared.
YOU GOT THIS MAMA!!!!
1st time mama here. Due next week.. lol scared of tearing especially severe tearing... so i want to make sure I'm understanding this, you recommend side pushing the most to prevent tearing? So the old school on your back with legs up, or squatting is more likely to tear the perineum? Thank you for all the information
Squatting once you're crowning is more likely to cause more tearing, but is a great position to help get to that point and then you could be on your back or side to actually deliver. Being on your back doesn't increase the likelihood of tearing. Being on your side helps to open the exterior pelvis, so you make more room for baby to move down and under the pelvic bone and at that point you can turn to your back if you want because the hardest part of pushing is getting the baby under the pelvic bone.
Cochrane Collaborate of specialist from around the globe produced a Report and advised painless 'Birth Canal Widening' to 10cm prior to birth, which should be achieved gradually and painlessly with birth facilitating devices 'Aniball' - Birth Canal Widening to 10cm diameter Wanda Klaman first baby 4.4kg born normally no episiotomy, 'EPi-no Delphine Plus' or using finger tips as described by Oxford (Wikipedia UK 'Perineal Massage') using the Plastic Surgeon's technique called 'skin tissue expansion' over 6-8 days. CZcams video 'Opening Doors For Baby to 10cm' is on my CZcams channel. Please view and share.
If you have an epidural, is it possible to do the hands and knees and the squat position?
Im coming up on 22 weeks pregnant with my third and watching your videos to help me to be prepared on what my options would be in a hospital and I know every hospital is going to have different rules like I can only birth my child on my back but they will allow me to move around before and while labor is happening and they will allow me to have a birthing ball so thats good but I still need practice on the birthing ball cause I haven't used one before but still want to try it on this round.
This is very helpful but with my anxiety I can't see myself feeling better 😭😂am 18weeks today and am freaking out ash
I am almost halfway to d-day and I want to have a natural birth on my own terms. I have scoliosis however not to the extent that I would need a c-section. What position would you recommend
Any of these positions! And here's something I think you might find helpful 🤗😘. www.spinningbabies.com/scoliosis-and-spinning-babies/
thank you so much this video was very helpful! :)
thank you for this video.
You are so welcome! 💞🤗😘
Question... does the side position work for first time moms? This is my first, I’m 27 weeks 😊 thanks so much for this video!
It's a wonderful option for first time moms or anyone! 💞😘👍🏼
You should not hold your breath when pushing. This can cause tearing and damage to pelvic floor. Breath through pushing.
Thank you for your comment. Are you a pelvic floor specialist?!? If so, I'd love to pick your brain and collaborate!
Tysm for this i always thought how do u push the baby out?
Omg I would love u to be my L&D nurse !
I wish someone tell me before then it would be very help
