- FightHype.com recently caught up with three-time world champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley to get his take on Hopkins' win over Winky Wright, his future plans and much more. "If he's a man about it, he'll come and see me" stated Mosley as he made it clear that his first choice for his next opponent is Floyd Mayweather Jr. If that fight can't happen, Mosley names several other potential opponents, including jr. welterweight king Ricky Hatton, IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron or WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, who he's already had discussions with. You don't want to miss what he had to say!

November 10th...the 9th is a Friday.
He wasn't growing feathers, he was growing his dragon wings preparing to throw fireballs. Mosley got SMOKED!
True and any superfight is a good fight for boxing.
nice interview
U couldnt be anymore CORRECT!!! I TOTALLY AGREE
Hell yeh I am excited just thinking about it.
tru...u got a good point
That's why I see the fight going the distance, these two guys are tough as nails and even if they go down they will get back up.
I still respect Mosley more. He has the mentality every boxer should have. Fight anyone and never be scared to fight. He has a warrior mentality.
I would slightly agree!
Hell yeh so let's keep this up more people have joined in which is a very good thing.
I feel u on that
YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT!
NYC, I am def. going to see that fight.
Me to crab me to, even people like cotto and mosley who are the best available to face floyd will still be considered underdogs, he is just that damn good.
a bigger flaw of mosleys that i found out just thru watching him fight through out the years is this..alot of fighters have a switch they no when to box when to brawl and they blend both styles in beautifully..mosleys switch seems to be broken..real shit once he starts brawling thats it..once you get him in that mode he stays in it the whole fight long!
yea..good point..the thing is though he seems confident on the inside i beleive he lets ppl on the inside because he feels he can hold is own there as well..wich he is definitley capable of..i definitley woudnt recommend he do that against any one with a concentrated body attack like cotto..but williams has a decent chin and even on the inside i can see him carving up alot of good fighters..out of all the talent at welter weaight p.williams has the brightest future imo
No I said he won't stop until he is goat, which means he will keep fighting and winning until he is recognized as one of the, if not the greatest of all time. It's not his destiny but he does have the opponents and the skill to do so.
That fight would make so much money probably be mainstream and get alot of attention that would help boxing in general.
Hagler had the three things that gave anyone a problem, unbelievable will to win, a chin not made of granite but made of titanium, and bombs in both his fists. Greates middleweight ever IMO.
He is taking the right outlook on it though, he says he will just keep fighting and his chance will come, which it will.
I agree, all those punches per round will keep even the hardest puncher away. Even though he was hurt against marg he didn't go down and he weathered the storm so I know he can take a punch.
Mosley is quality, enjoy watching him... With plenty of other decent fighters around same weight division, like he said get the great fights on, & save boxing!!!!
Man you post ALOT!
yeah man i took a big lost moving to pro , but i will come back to fight again and hopefully i will stay in pro built a carrier if i train harder than ever. but i have my eyes on MMA right now dont know where to go first, i know some bjj. i guess i could train more.
Come on man he got clocked in the mid and later rounds with hard left-hands and he took'em like a "G", I'm telling you despite the low blows in the 1st & 3rd Zab was still rockin' him at times and Cotto was eatin' them and dishin' them right back 4 real!
I agree.
True that is what to many tall boxers fail to do, box tall. Use their height and reach to control distance. Although floyd doesn't pressure against larger opponents he does control the pace, I don't know how but he always does that. I don't remember ever seeing floyd outboxed so it would be a good matchup.
I think floyd vs sugar would be a hell of a fight.
Sounds good, it's always fun to face new opponents.
Nice !! Cotto vs Mosley, I'd like to see mosley come out with a Win before he retires (35 years old).. Either way a great Fight for the two and for Boxing.. another good move for Golden boy and Top rank, keep them coming
Lennox's jab was the best, that's why people said he was boring. He knew the key to winning and ring generalship, for the most part, was he jab he says thay alot when he is announcing fights.
Difference with floyd and jones is that jones relied more on his reflexes than floyd does. Floyd has the best defence in the game and although he does use his relfexes his shoulder will carry him longer down the road than his reflexes.
yea punishment in fights is also a big factor..i said that earlier about hopkins he doesnt take those vicious shots in fights!
i dont know his ability to fight on the inside is a big part of what makes him unique as a fighter..it makes his fights exciting an fan friendly to watch..i beleive he could make every fight a borefest..jab his opponent to half way to death an run away all fight long but hes a crowd pleaser an the sport needs that desperatley right now!
True but Williams uses an "offense is the best defense" sort of style. He doesn't mind banging it out and his jab is more of a flicker than winky's. He just needs to work more on his entire body movement.
Going back to the Mayweather/ Gatti fight, when Ricky Hatton was in the audience watching you could tell he was nervous cause he looked trembly and was gulping down on that bottle of water, but Cotto who is there also was watching and he was focused like to was ready to jump in the ring, so you knew who really wanted to fight and who didn't just compare their expressions, but Hatton just get credit for manning up.
I agree also cotto and mosley will fight the month before mayweather and hatton fight. If the winners of those bouts face one another it could very well surpass oscar and floyd.
I would want that to happen crab, it would be good for boxing to have to top level competitors fight and their hearts out in a best of 3.
I say williams takes the baton when floyd retires in a year or 2 or 3. I can almost gurantee by the time cotto and williams fight it will be a MEGA FIGHT they will both be established and true champions.
seriously it would amaze the hell out of me.
Don't sleep on his body punching either, he has a sick left hook to the body and he won't shy away from throwing it against cotto.
He does but floyd's ability to adapt is pretty damn amazing. It won't be easy that's for sure.
Clottey would be a very good test to show exactly where Paul is going with his career, clottey is a very big dude himself and would give Paul a test, maybe even a defeat.
its hard to have alot of pop on your punches without any leverage unless he plans on doing alot of body work on williams..the only glaring weakness i see in p.w to this point is his jab..he flicks it and for some one with that kinda of size advantage it really should be his best punch..that has to be corrected if he wants to be the best!
That's true though.
That's all I am saying trust me I know he is one of the best especially in his prime his competitive nature just caused him to bite off more than he could chew.
Someone said it best "Roy moves like a lightweight and hits like a heavyweight" def an ATG.
Look at many comments we put on this vid, always fun to have a good boxing discussion.
that was for mack 786
i agree
I agree with alot of what you stated and the funny thing is that the MONEY would be there if he did fight one of those greats you mentioned.
But you know like I know, EGO's never steps up
when its crunch time. Roy is quick as fuck with great skill but B-Hop is the man in the middle weight.
yea he has a few..that jab definitley needs work..defensively i dont think your gonna see much improvment no matter whos training him..unless he tones down that punch stat!
True lifestyle is a big key, for example hagler and benard ALWAYS stayed health and in shape, in and out of the ring. That's what gave them this "fountain of youth" so to speak.
yea... thats definitley a problem..if the fight is anything like i envision it to be mayweather could be fighting a beat up mosley..or a beat up cotto i think both will need max amount of time to recover from this fight..floyd shoudnt be 3-4 months down the road imo
It's not that they give him no credit, actually it is. I think hatton is a great fighter, I don't think even a shot castillo would get pounded out the way he did. It's just that floyd has never been seriously forced to pull out his a-game against anyone, hopefully hatton does this and shows his worth.
he would, Mosley has incredible handspeed can match Floyd's speed.
I see Cotto winning by UD.I always say this fight reminds me of DLH vs Whitaker because Oscar at the time was so marketable and would have gotten the decision no matter what, heck even he said it during an interview. Cotto is the same he is becoming very marketable and he will get the decision if it goes 12, I think he will have earned it though because this fight will be brutal, a body shot clinic. Cotto will probably hit the canvas but he will get up and fight on to a win.
Hatton is coming into the fight at 140, he will probably be the same weight as floyd come fight day, since floyd remains around the same weight and hatton will gain weight. That means hatton will keep his speed and power, and will still be outclassed.
well mosley status as a great fighter is already written in stone an he still has time to build on that..a win over cotto an mayweather yea i think you can consider mosley as one of the greatest! he lost 4 fights 2 of them to vernon forrest who was on the road to greatness before the injuries de-railed his career!
If mosley can sustain a consistent attack and not gas like judah does after 4, these 2 are def. going to bang it out (no homo)
Mayweather needs to take these fights, if he wants to be remembered as a ledgend. Margarito, Williams, Cotto, Mosely and HATTON. and there are many more.
good looks tho for keepin it real....i'm gonna try to keep it 1 way so it can be respected, i feel u, dat shit is wrong, its even worse bouncin back n forth....gotchu....n i jus love every1 really
and yes the popular belief in this fight is that cottos more powerful..i will have to see that 2 beleive it though
Shane Moseley is a true champ.
Skills pay da bills, and floyd's skills have paid a shitload of those bills.
Sugar shane seems like a nice guy! Can't really say that about floyd!
I have to agree with Cotto by UD. I always say this fight reminds me off DLH vs Whitaker. DLH was on his way in and whitaker was on the decline and as marketabale as Oscar was at the time there was no way he would have lost a decision, heck he even said that himself. It will be brutal, a body shot clinic, and someone (I think cotto) will hit the canvas. However he will get up and fight on and gain the decision win, hopefully he will have deserved it.
i agree...but it will be a tough fight both ways..but shane over the years has been so battle tested he has never been stopped in his career...shane imo is a very under rated body puncher in his how right..an it woudnt at all surprise me if chewed cotto up on the inside..only thing that might swing the fight in cottos favor is shanes age...a prime shane mosley would crush cotto no doubt
wow..i strongly dis-agree on that..do you know how difficult it would be for a fighter like cotto to get on the inside an stay there consistently against a boxer like p.williams..cotto doesnt have a prayer if williams fights smart an keeps him on the outside..only problem with williams is that once you close the distance he tends to let you camp out on the inside an that negates his huge reach advantage!
People say floyd is suscepitble to the jab because oscar hit him with it. People don't realize oscar is actually left handed but fights orthodox. His left hand is his strong hand which makes his jab not only fast but strong. Not many have a jab as good as his. Floyd didn't even go past second gear in that fight, he took rounds off.
It's not really that hatton has a better chance it is that hatton has earned his chance to face floyd. He beat cas convincingly and had enough leverage to be awarded a fight like this. The media are already building excuses if floyd wins saying hatton wasn't a challenge anyway, it never ends.
but regardless of how ppl feel this shoudnt be a popularity contest..if at the end of his career..he earns his stripes the way hes suppose to..steps up an conquers every challenge you dont ever have to like him..but you have to respekt what he has done in his sport..and as far as legacy goes thats all that really matters.. that shit should be all about respekt period!
The fighter with the best chance to beat Floyd Mayweather is someone with a long straight jab that can keep Floyd at a distanc and cause him to re-set. The fighter also has to have the type of reach where Floyd can't counter the jab with his best punch, the straight right hand. Paul Williams in a few years will have all the tools to defeat Mayweather, if he gets a chance to fight him is a whole nother story.
That's what a good businessman does, should be some good fights.
Mosely is the only one I think that could match up with Mayweather style wise.
I agree with everything you said except the fact that you don't give Hatton his props. Dude was undefeated and had many KO's under his belt. Even broke Castillo ribs & made him quit. Hatton gets slept on cause PBF made him look like an amateur but I'm convinced that Hatton can hang with anyone at 140.
Mosley is a friendly guy not arrogant like Mayweather.
@skills1ent word
What people don't know is that floyd has been hit hard plenty times before.
Mosley is one of the strongest punches in his division.
Floyd has an underestimated chin, and he can brawl lmao.
Trust me, if floyd wanted to brawl, he would brawl... he wouldn't just throw wild shot, he would caculate where to throw the heavy shots, and thats what makes his boxing style beautiful
mosley clottey is the fight that nobody is talkin bout but i expect it to be a SLUGFEST
It will be more exciting than DLH-Mayweather but the outcome won't change, except for a UD instead of a SD.
ya ur right, williams would use hatton as target practice but williams has no power i guarentee he couldnt stop hatton...but as far as 147 and hatton go i c ur point...n ur right, minus the nockdown in the 1st round colazzo wouldve probly won...n even tho it was a legitimate nockdown, colazzo wasnt hurt, it was more of a balance shot...so u r right
yea..see the difference is hagler proved he could take hearns best shot..i thought he was in trouble the 1st round hearns rocked him a few times..but hagler never lost his composure he re-composed himself and finished the fight like a true champ.lol i think the way hearns came out swingin for the fences surprised every one including hagler..not because it wasnt hearns style..but because he was fighting marvin hagler alot of ppl expected him to try an outbox hagler! i agree
Ricky will get to floyd on more than one occasion during the fight, floyd can mix it up when he needs to so when you see that happen I can gurantee fireworks.
You can't say Shane doesn't let it hang out they and start pounding shots when he throws. If that happens shane could land a killer shot that will send cotto to the canvas.
Yeh floyd is so accurate and loves to counter over the jab, williams would def get tagged.
You gotta take cotto's progress into mind, he levels up almost everytime he fights, might even be a stronger cotto that fights shane, I think cotto will take it he is just to young and fresh for shane to handle at his age and time.
Tell me who was more entertaining to watch on 24/7. It takes 2 to sell a mega fight and I think floyd played his part and dlh played his, perfectly actually.
Than hatton will be regarded as the truth, and the sky will be the limit for him.
Hey even if they were slaps I am just saying it managed to keep marg away especially that 12th round after he almost got sent home in the 11th. Don't sleep on paul he is getting better and better also, it's really if paul can keep cotto away or can cotto get inside and damage him.
lol yea it is easy to say margarito would beat cintron again..you do have to consider though..margarito was alot more seasoned as a fighter then cintron at that time.. he had alot more fights under his belt...i havent forgot about margarito but cintron has it all he just needs time he'll be a different fighter the next time they get in the ring!
I hope that hatton does, I want to see someone push floyd to his limits, maybe that might even garner a rematch.
continued:
That's what I don't like about some boxers that give up a chance to take the fight and then want to fight when it will benefit them!! Benefit the paying fans and fight the man when he want to fight you, not when you are getting older and want a good payday before you retire or lose!!!
Shane and Floyd have both called each other out several times....end of discussion.
Def. a problem, I saw him the other day and see alot of potential.
I can agree, roy in his prime was pretty much unbeatable.
At lightweight, I would favor mosley. Other than that, even a prime mosley, I would have to takes floyd's talent into account.
2-3 years tops p.williams will be the best welter weight in the world! good speed,un-real work rate (no 1 can match that right now) even more scary is that he has a great chin! a diff trainer an sum serious work on that jab an hes pretty much unstoppable!
well spoken shane. floyd likes to pick and choose. and the win over oscar was not a noble way to win. he did run. a champs viewpoint! cotto v shane fight of the year. both great exciting fighters but I think cotto. hopefully floyd does not duck the winner of this bout. these 2 fighters make floyd nervous. thats why floyd does not like to mention either.
He used his height and reach all night against marg, what makes you think he won't do it against cotto. He kept marg at the end of his jabs and clinched if it got to messy.
