The one who got eliminated’s design was just gorgeous. I loved the idea of the horse head and bit completing the hand guard
6:06 I think that’s the best “it will keel” ever in this show’s history
with the dramatic zoom
He sounds like Palpatine there
That zoom is what really sold it

The fact it had a crack and that didnt even affect the rest if the blade is amazing. Just goes to show how well it's made
having a crack in a blade does not show that the blade is well made.
I feel like the nail chop would've destroyed it
how is having a crack being well made?
Anyone else notice that they're slashing Persian rugs with Greek swords?
That's definitely not on purpose, it's not like we kept them at bay for their whole lifespan as an empire or beat them to pieces or something 😏
@@user-gu9qj7tw4k well, minus that bit where Sparta allied with them to conquer Athens.
@@jlaw131985 well they signed a treaty so I mean it was more of everyone is at peace rather then being an ally and this was way after the fact Persia tried taking over Greece. If anything its probably a reference to the battle of Thermopolye

LMAO the bald guy was my high school principal!!
Michael Nickles Me too. CLHS 💪
Did this show also make anyone else interested in learning how to be a blacksmith
It's what got me into it lol. Love it
If you're near Michigan, John actually does offer classes in blacksmithing.
me absolutely
It inspires me to be better. I've had no formal training, and I don't have a well equipped shop. These guys are making Camaros while I've barely mastered go-carts, lol.
I'm glad the show embraces and promotes contestants that started blade smithing as a hobby, or just inspired by watching Forge in Fire.

What is he gonna do? Chop up the judges and ran with 10,000$
thats why one of the judges was scared ....
Kopis: The Greek machete/kukri equivalent. My personal favorite Greek weapon. It was designed to be an effective chopper but had a lot of use as a slasher or even a stabber. Thanks to it's enclosed guard and hilt it could also be used to hit an opponent in the head without killing them. Short, versitile and a truly beautiful blade. I personally prefer spears or glaives but I would KEAL to have this weapon
Machete/kukri are an istrument, kopis is the weapon
Im only 90 seconds in but both these rugged boys are going Damascus. These next 7 and a half minutes are going to be juicy. I KNOW IT.
The kopis isn’t meant to be a traditional slasher / slicer weapon like a katana or sword, it’s meant for very close combat (last resort if spear broke etc). The reason for the heavy handed tip is because it’s meant to chop. You want to hit half way of the kopis not the tip, it’s meant to if the enemy had armour to crack or completely break through from the weight of the tip. That’s why when he slashed down at the rugs it didn’t do much but when he chopped side on and in the middle it tore through cause the weight at the end adds additional power. You’d essentially want to treat it like a mace not a katana.
Handmade horse shape guard is very interesting and beautiful

Augusto Mantero he is Filipino
And his name is Doug Marcaida
The kopis that lost was incredibly beautiful and looked more like an original ancient kopis. I really hoped him to win even after the peel damage.
Does another else see the similarities in design between the kopis and the falcata swords?
Doug have a very nice grunt when he swings both of the blades. And my favorite line he always says "It will kill"
Nice tv competition without much drama
I saw this episode but I still love watching it.
Doug loves his job so much and it's such a pleasure to watch him do it

My first woodworking hobby build was a greek kopis.
This is SPARTA!
Both of them are winners
Imagine a blacksmith from back in the day watching this show.
“So wait, they don’t have to do this to make a living? They just do it for fun?”
And we made better weapons with much less technology!
The Greeks exported this design to Spain where it became known as the Falcata. It's incredible how two weapons remained virtually identical over the ages. A testament to great design
Wow that was tough I loved both them blades

Keel!!!!
That smile when Doug says "it will keel".
kopis were chopping weapons wielded more axe like. so saying it being a chopper as a negative point is kind of dumb
@Pterodactyl- man ngl yeah
Tom this is true
Any blade with a forward curve was made for hacking/chopping, backward curves are made for slashing, stabbing swords have a heavyweight tip usually.
Also Doug wasn't keeping the edge alignment correct, seemingly from the video. This is as historically accurate as Conan the Barbarian.
@@Argonak1 no their lighter take a rapier for example
Beautiful beautiful
He got a straight blade
Moment they say it's heavy you are done
EVEN IF others blade got a crack 😂😂
I just want to hear "it will not keeel" 😂
Also sadly only once did I see this weapon used correctly (8:24) these are intended to be used mid blade, not at the end,, the weight increased the damage and velocity of the center of the mass of the blade, this is why the material cuts so easily at this time stamp
realism51 no it cuts well cuz of the angle he chopped at
I got an A+ for material engineering just by watching this show, how amazing.
But most importantly.. it will KEEL !!!
I love this weapon
When Doug grows lots of arms lol
4:23 When your ancestory results come back 2% Irish or Scottish.
A roman scutum, and a greek helmet, perfect combination history channel
First time I've seen them using Damascus that it didn't break once while they were making it lol
"It penetrates easily and cuts deep overall sir your weapon Weel Keel"
Am I the only one who thinks the sharpness test should take place BEFORE the strength test???
All the blades are sharp at the beginning...
But the point is how sharp it is after such extreme tests..
I don't quite agree, simply because if a blade Smith manages to forge a blade that even after those strength tests remains razor sharp, then distinguishes himself from ordinary blade smiths. This is a show that seeks the Best.
Ας είμαστε ειλικρινείς όμως, τα ελληνικά όπλα βγάζουν μάτι. Εδώ όπλο που χρησιμοποιούσαν οι Σπαρτιάτες λογικό είναι να'ταν και Final Test xD
No, but you and everyone else that thinks that is wrong so don;t feel bad.
All joking aside, these competitors are really humble.
you know its a tough build when they get 5 days instead of 4
they really teased us with taking out “keeeeelll” in the beginning
Whomever thought up the show was a genius
John got the least satisfying it will kill ever
Never had I’ve ever seen a blade that can’t KEEL.
I seen

Which part of a blade do you not understand?
Doug Marcaida could keel with a pool noodle lol
There was one that broke during that test, it wouldn’t kill
Doug takes a little too much joy in the kill test
Nice vid
I wonder if the contestants can slave their way as long as they want in their home forge or they still have a set amount of hours in a day to follow
John is definitely one of those people who says “I’ve got a lot of relatives from Ireland and Scotland” seeing as he wears a kilt and hangs an Irish flag in his forge
lmao
Has there ever been a time where a sharp piece of steel wont KEEL?
Just throwing this out there. That bald guy sounds exactly like Dana White lol.
its amazing how these guys manage to do all this in just five/four days

Ooo, conflicted over this one:
I wanted both guys to win.
Mike had some fantastic craftsmanship and I really liked his methods, but you gotta give props to any guy rocking the kilt. John’s blade had a more representative profile and the proportions were on point (pun).
Mike looks like the kinda dude to watch kids play in the pool all day.

Everyone looks a little unnerved after Doug eviscerates those torsos lol
Mikes handle was gorgeous
Chopping test on the ballistic dummy is way too violent. 😣😣
I wish they tested the blade they show at the beginning aswell. I really want to see how they perform themselves.
4 some reason sooo satifing
The runner up's blade was amazing, I really thought he was going to win.
I think it was that edge peeling that cost him the victory here, and the cutting. His blade didnt slash as effectively as johns
@@codywotring8973 It didn’t slash as effectively because the edge alignment of the cuts was all off. This might be down to the tip/forward heavy weight they complained about... forgetting that this weighting is exactly the point of a kopis’s design.
John is like If Elon Musk was a bladesmith.

“Thank you” 👁👄👁
it's "κοπίς" (kopís) which means "cutter"
And in newer greek it's "κόπτης" (kóptis)
It will-FORGED AND FIRE
John is so funny he say's "it will cut"
The major downside was the thickness of the blade, it needed to be thicker to handle the additional weight towards the tip, and because it was so thin the tip of the blade could easily twist and deflect off what it was striking.
