One of the greatest stories ever told, based on the book 'Queenie' by Michael Korda, who wrote about his aunt, actress Merle Oberon and the effort she made to hide her true heritage and identity.
Thank you for uploading this movie. I once many years ago had it on video tape. My favorite all time movie was Wuthering Heights and reading about Merle Oberon and finding Queenie was just so sad and beautiful. Thank you for bringing this back for me.
To varying degress our lives are stories we tell ourselves, and each other. Merle Oberon created a story as a means to make her way in this world. I was born in Tasmania. There were people who claimed to have known her there in her formative years. Stories about her having made incognito visits. These were just stories as is now known. Fact and fiction merge often in peoples lives. Somewhat amused by people who think this is a biopic of her life. Thanks for posting this on CZcams. I think I did see it on tv at the time but recall little about it.
The ending is what kept the memory of this movie alive for me. Carving her into an English woman by denying her own heritage was racists. A great movie with a powerful message.
I just read an interesting piece in the Guardian about Oberon and it mentioned this series. So I went to CZcams, et voila! Here it is. Look forward to watching it.
The most painful moment of her life was watch how the love of her uncle Morgan twisted in that incestous delrium so full of lost hopes, of a personal feeling of fail, the broken innocence
The chronology of this is really messed up. Merle Oberon was already in movies by the time of the Private Life of Henry VIII in 1933. So the scene of her still doing the feather dance in 1937, by which time she'd been nominated for an academy award is just plain wrong.
Remembered this very well and from a young age saw how racist people can be. The British pillaged India's wealth and have the nerve to discriminate them. Sometimes I wonder if it's only certain race life on this earth matters.
This movie was based on Michael Korda's book 'Queenie' which was loosely based on the life of Merle Oberon, who had been married to his uncle Alexander Korda. Dawn Avalon ('Queenie') represents Oberon.
This movie was a work of fiction, the real Merle Oberon was never like this. Merle Oberon had a movie career as herself, not under an alias. Merle Oberon was never in a private school in India subjected to misogyny, she was never exploited by any man, including some nemesis's father, there was never any family problems with her family and her real parents met in a tea plantation somewhere in Sri Lanka.
This film, just like the book it is based upon, is a drama and not a documentary and should be viewed that way. Merle Oberon did indeed use an alias and a false story of her background to get out of India and into show business, and this film uses fictional people around her to paint that picture. As her life began more than 110 years ago, I would be careful about claiming to fully know what she was exposed to in school or by men in her life, and instead see this film as an artistic instrument to show how this young girl became a great actress, through necessary fabrications to conceal parts of herself and her background to get ahead. Such was the world back then, and such is the story of her life told in a non-biographical book by those who knew her better than we ever will.
People need drink like coke mangoe juice orange juice with salt not alcohol it is very bad your health and the food is vegetarian diet in North India and on the Indian coast it is fish
😮 WOW 😲. The usual cookie cutter comments. Nothing about the actual series 🤔🥺. The grandmother, played a pivotal role in her life, 😭 such beautiful knowledge 😢. Queenie, is attractive, but not Vivacious and alluring as she is portrayed 🌺. Might or been better to have cut this in half. DISGUSTING the portrayal of her mother and uncle who are clearly not Indian. Him, something, I don't know nor do I CARE 😮😱😲🤢. The mother, I fear dreadfully, was just covered in some vile 🤬 makeup 😮. I think, that being Raped, she did not fear well playing the part of a rape victim 😢 why 😞 because if you have, you have flight or fright response, she eluded both🙄🙄🍋. For me, my favourite part, was when she was a child in India 🙏. Namaste 🙏
Well, until recently the Western film industry believed very much in not giving original ethnic actors roles - they also believed, yte actors could convincingly pass as South East Asians, West Asians/North Africans & Indigenous Americans with makeup in the colour range from orange #2 -4
Welcome to Hollywood! She was "popular" at the time, had a very slight resemblance and her voice is fairly close. That's the best you can ever hope for in any highly dramatized film or even in an actual biopic. Look at what Disney has done with The Little Mermaid and Snow White. Nothing is sacred anymore.
This comment is so dumb - the whole point is that Queenie looked white. That's how she passed as a white woman. If she looked mixed, there would be no TV series at all.
@@hochinchuan3755 yep 😁 say what NOW 🥵, no no Mon Ami BOM. 😱🤔😎💯 Don't judge a book by it's cover/colour 😢😮. Happens everyday in real life 😭. My child, is of colour, but MY child is my snow white 🌺💓. Sadly on both sides colour does matter. No one can help how they turn out😮🙏
Lucian is cute but the way he kisses, thrashing his head side to side like he's devouring her face. Not very sexy. Sure, I've gotten carried away while passionately kissing someone to the point we're biting each other's tongues, but Lucian's kissing just leaves me cold lol
Hindi is not uncommon as many people from Hindi states have migrated to Kolkata in the last 3 decades as living there is more affordable and jobs for the poor are a plenty. Most cabbies are Hindi speaking, for instance. However, the native language of the city is Bengali, and not a single word in that language was heard in the film because it was filmed in Jaipur (per IMDb), a Hindi speaking city.
God i hate Kirk Douglas...the fact that hes in this movie, especially given the subject matter, is disturbing...knowing his real life holy shit ***he raped Natalie Wood among other substantial accusations of sexual violence
This was a beautiful mini series.
Queenie is the movie/series I was waiting 25 years to see again.. Marvellous❤😮
Thanks for your kind response
❤❤❤

I saw this on Lebanese TV in 1987 . I was 13. Now, watching it all over again. How time flies...........

Digging into the life of Merle Oberon brought me here. Such a wonderful movie!
Mini series 🤔🥺
Although, I'm only 12 in the Spring of 87. It's one of my guilty pleasures of all time.
wow that was so mesmerising and Beautifully done ..thank you for uploading this .
Thankyou xxx beautiful quality
Remember this in 1987 so well
True or not, it's a very nice film. Quite enjoyed it. Thank you for the upload.
Hey, thanks Lady Rohan.
It was aired in 87 maybe ,88 in Portugal. It was wonderfull, never forgot it.
Yes what's going on frozen screen and no sound 😢
The video stops at 2:17 and restarts at 2:24.
thank you i could only find the hindi version now i can watch it again

awesome
The most beautiful woman of the Eighties
It really is a Masterpiece
I just read the biography of Merle and it is vastly different from what is narrated in this film. I am totally confused.
It's very loosely based on Merle.
It's HOLLYWOOD! of course it's not real° !
Debería estar en español o subtitulada.

Albert Moses the actor should have said to Queenie about India

I loved this miniseries back in the day and Mia Sara is absolutely beautiful...but that has to be the worst fan dance I've ever seen.
How did she go from Dawn Avalon to Merle Oberon ?. Half of the story is not told.

Yes Queenie Kelly is our people
At 3:40 my mom is the girl all the way to the right 😊
Are you telling me even in 1986, they could not find Indian actors to play in this that they had to get white actors in dark makeup?????
Yea they can but you know the British racism they only wants the British people to view
It's ok, Queenie's mother and uncle were half British. Not that much makeup required. Relax.

Did people ride Vespas in 1931 Calcutta? Sorry, I won’t nitpick the entire film, but I just saw this in the opening scene.
You have very good eyes! I had to look 3 times. You are correct, the Vespa did not come to India until the 1960's.

The true story would have been far better.
Oberon threatened Korda if he wrote a biography, so he had to make it a roman a clef. This is the novel, not the biography.
It is even more tragic.
Orientalism on full display-starting from the beginning with that awful sound track. Ugh
