India's Largest Beach (Marina Beach, Chennai) 🇮🇳

- A trip to Marina Beach, Chennai. Indian beaches are very different to what we have in Europe. From what I've experienced they seem to be more like hangout spots, especially around late afternoon / early evening. The experience is more like a cross between a fairground and an Asian night market with many food stalls, vendors selling all kinds of inexpensive items and lots of carnival games.
I've never been much of a beach person and certainly have never found the appeal of sunbathing. I'd be bored in 5 minutes. At an Indian beach however, nobody is sunbathing. In fact nobody is even swimming in the sea. Everyone is fully clothed, with some rolling up their trouser legs to dip their feet in the ocean. They are there to spend time with their friends or bring their kids to eat some pani puri and ride the merry-go-round.
This beach can attract more than 50,000 people visitors per day and most of them are welcoming to foreigners so you could never be bored walking around there. Always someone to talk to and relative to the number of visitors, the beach is quite clean. Not sure about the water though.
I wish I'd spent more time at this beach but I was already tired and with a full stomach when I got there, just before sunset. I'll return one day and do it more justice with a 1 hour vlog, that I'm sure I'll have no problem filling with fun content.

I am born and raised in Chennai (Madras) for 30 years i now live outside India and I always miss the spirit and essence of Chennai and it's people, I got emotional seeing this vlog of Chennai, I now understand the reason why we Chennaiites say Chennai is a City and Madras is an emotion ❤️

There are much cleaner beaches South of Chennai. Unfortunately, Marina beach has become overcrowded and dirty in the last two decades.

Chennai is a cool place in winters and the south specifically, I'm from Northeast India and I hate cold places but my skin thrives in hot humid weathers. I wish the beach would have been cleaner and more cheap but good bars and pubs.

Gosh! This beach is massive! I've been to Chennai once when I was a kid and I remember it raining so we didn't go to the beach.
Regarding why people did not sunbath, the majority of Indians get quite a lot of hot sun wherever they live (except in the mountains). So sunbathing isn't a thing in beaches where Indians make up an overwhelming majority of visitors (people do opt for sunbathing in the beaches of Goa or Kerala where foreigners from colder countries form a significant portion of the visitors). And swimming in the sea, as it is on the coast of mainland India, isn't advisable for most of us (except for some (not all) who live right on the coast and have swum in the sea for most of their lives). The sea is too choppy and even wading too far in has claimed the lives of many inexperienced people. A majority of Indians visit beaches to enjoy the breeze and the waves (which they do by wading into water that's generally never higher than the waist). The rides and stalls selling food and trinkets are a bonus.

It's illegal to swim in Marina beach you'll be prosecuted , it's because of water depth and wave current is too strong for any amateur to manage and anyone who wanders deep gets pulled into because it's bay one of my friend himself drowned and passed away and there are casualties every year so it's forbidden

You should come to 'Nagore' further down south along the coast. I'm Scottish too but that little town is where my parent's and ancestors where from. They have a lovely beach and they also have the most popular shrine in all of south india. Well worth the visit! Nice video
