- A short boat trip from Mumbai is Elephanta Island, also known as Gharapuri. I traveled there to visit the Elephanta Caves which were carved out of the rock by Hindus in the 7th century.
The inside of the main cave contains sculptures carved into the walls. The only problem is that you can't film them. Well, you can, you're just not allowed to. I've never let some ridiculous rules get in the way of my videos in the past so I wasn't going to this time either.
The biggest problem I've had in India is being able to find an honest guide at this type of place. There have been many occasions where I've just decided to go without a guide because I know the likelihood is that they are just going to spend the whole time trying to hustle money out of me.
At the Elephanta Caves I thought the sculptures were impressive but had no clue what I was looking at really. I asked some friendly Indian locals who were helpful and then a guide approached me. I decided to give him a chance. Was he an honest guide or a scammer?
Price for the return boat trip was 205 rupees and entrance to the caves was 600 rupees (foreigners must pay 15 times the price of locals, who pay 40 rupees.)
Watch until the end to see me finally buy a baseball cap, after failing to bargain one for a fair price in the previous video in the Mumbai market streets.

When I visited Elephanta caves in 2014 first time I was wondering that why all caves are not same in the size. As a student of geography I find the answer quickly when I saw the Rock type of last few caves. The fact is that Main cave is built by cutting a single piece Rock and because for such a huge structure they were searched a huge Rock at the places where smaller caves are but when they found Limstone mixed with besalt then they Just leved the cave and started there work at neighbour rocks after some failure they finally got the exact size of Ignious Rock (besalt) and made the main cave. Anyone can easily see the white limestone rocks in other smaller caves. Till now I visited 4 Times of Elephanta caves. 🙏

Why not buddy? The prices are subsidized for poor locals only who can get a glimpse of their history! Go to Paris or NYC and compare their rate for touristic places with Indian ones before complaining!
You can pay 2000rupees to visit Eiffel tower but not 1500 rupees to visit taj mahal? Average Indian can't even pay even 500rs! It's pure justice! If you don't like this pls avoid those places!
And moreover if you don't know the ticket rates are considerably lower for SAARC and bimtec countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lankan citizens in all touristic places of India! It's higher for western tourists only where they sell tickets in absurd expensive prices! So westerners when they got the taste of their medicine in foreign land, they are getting shocked??
I had never seen Indians complaining about expensive tickets for NYC liberty statue or Pisa tower though 🤣🤣
Compare the prizes b/w their city and our city India not prizes for locals and internationals. If you are Indian please at least if you just can't be proud of our country then don't make such statements it's not good.

Dale is a smart traveller and said no but I can see so many old tourists giving into the pressure and paying what would be the equivalent of £25/hr for a shitty tour, which is totally totally obscene money even by foreign standards.

I remember going to Elephant caves and some monkeys stole my biscuits! Seeing that "Colaba" sign made me remember how I went to college in Colaba... Wilson College(not sure if it still exists). Right around the corner from the college, there is a sandwich stall, the famous Bombay sandwich. It is vegetarian but it's worth a try.. don't know what makes them soo good, maybe the mint chutney or the tons of butter they put on it before grilling it! Your videos bring back so many good memories. Thanks Dale! I really hope things get better soon. CZcams travel vloggers are an essential part of my life and their content is my daily dose of vitamins!

sadly the guide wasn't that good. The trouble with Hinduism is that it is often explained by people with little/no knowledge. You were truly scammed there and i hope you have forgotten everything he told you about the " Gods"
He was more concern about the money from the beginning per se. He was not qualified enough to be a guide. This is the tregedy of India. He was just a scammer with limited knowledge. Foreigners are requested to say straight "NO" & just walk away. Average Indian's are welcoming & friendly,

This place was built many many thousands of years ago, by people more advanced than today, killed off by a major earth changing cataclysm, you can see evidence for these people all around the globe. But India is by far, a Jewel of history, that is not being touched by mainstream, because they know the entire country would expose the lies we have been taught about our past.
