    OK, who else thinks this is scary? The number "911" has popped up four separate times in my life today - twice here on CZcams. The video "does scooby do steroids" now has 911 thumbs down and this video I just uploaded is 9 minutes and 11 seconds long. I have a bad feeling. Here is the steroids video with 911 thumbs down on it. czcams.com/video/qARAvB6eKRI/video.html

Anyway hope i can get some advice from you,about 4 days ago i reherniated my disc and a result suffered bad sciatica pain throughout my lower body(not in the gym but sitting too long due to my deskjob) . Do you think it is still possible to go to the gym but just train with machines? I saw your video you made on injuries and i really dont want to take time off the gym.. i know you for instance are still training despite your core injury.. just hope i can get some advice from you for now thanks

    I lost 30 kg in 8 months last year and i have some tips for you guys/girls to lose weight. 1. Write down what you eat so you have a better look at your daily intake. 2. Cut down on the calories, but no too much around 500-800 cals worked for me. 3. Go to the gym, if you excercise more you will be happier and it helps you alot in the weight loss progress. 4. Cut down on fast food, candy and unhealthy food. Eat healthier food just pure organic food will work for example a ceasar salad is a great meal, lots of protein and healthy vitamins. Im only 16 years old but this worked for me so i suggest you try it. The most important thing is that you need to be patient as Scooby mentioned, get some motivation and get out there, do it for yourself, make yourself happier!

      +Rickard Alback huh? A slight deficit will not harm you. A 200 calorie decrease until you lose about 1.5 pounds a week should be fine. You just have to make sure your eating enough protein

      +Roger W I meant that i "wasted" money when i was losing weight, now i have already achieved my goal. And about Calorie cutting it varies from day to day atleast it did for me some day i cut 200 cals the other day 500 cals.

    • @mattotonton
      @mattotonton Před 8 lety +4

      +Eric Berglund what you did was very good I wouldnt listen to these guys 500 to 800 cal def is fine when your fairly overweight .When you get in the 13-10 percent body fat range or lower then you have to be more careful with calories restriction because as your bodyfat levels get very low your body is more incline to use LBM (especially if your not doing weight training and eating a high protein diet ) as a fuel source when your not eating enough food.When your super overweight its okay to lose like 3-4 pounds per week but as you get into the healthy range say 20-15 percent body fat maybe then you should try for 1-2 pounds per week .Then when your in the 15-13 percent body fat go for 1-1/2 pounds per week ect.BTW you should be really proud of what you have done it take a large amount of will power to change you habits .

    Good points.
    Whenever talking about fat loss, I think one must always stress the fact that THE number 1 mistake that many people make when trying to lose fat is a lot of cardio coupled with long periods of caloric deficit. Sure, you're gonna lose weight that way, but you're also gonna lose muscle, slow down your metabolism, and over time you'll have to do more and more cardio and eat less and less to maintain your body weight. It's not sustainable long term. Weight training is the key for losing fat the healthy way, among all the other health benefits it brings.

    • @mattotonton
      @mattotonton Před 8 lety

    I've kept my fat % at 10-12 for years now. It's all about self-image.
    Self-image = our own conception of the "sort of person I am"
    The self-image then controls what you can and cannot accomplish.
    You cannot alter your behavior permanently unless you learn to regulate your self-image.
    The self-image is a cybernetic system in your subconscious mind, it works like
    an automatic pilot in an aeroplane: if you deviate from your set course,
    the automatic pilot kicks in and corrects your deviation, and you're back on course.
    Your self-image must be altered if you are to keep the changes in your life.
    We do not have a relationship problem or a weight problem or an alcohol problem;
    we have a self-image problem.
    (quotes from Dr. Maxwell Maltz)
    "Change the self-image AND you change the personality and the behavior."
    "Our self-image, strongly held, essentially determines what we become."
    "The self-image is a standard of comparison. The inner matches the outer."

Part of my new habits are to look at and think one of your videos each day this year so that your good, logical advice invades my brain and settles in. Thanks for all your knowledge and experience Scooby. Some things I knew, others I didn't and some were reinforced.
    Oh and I can vouch for taking walks: they may not work for everyone but walks ARE a Possibility. I can only speak for anyone who is overweight. Listen to Scooby; and if something doesn't sound right "take it with a grain of salt," and look it up. Maybe Scooby would awnser you.
    Ps: it took me at least two weeks to see any gain from walking: about a month to see major changes. I've done multiple cycles with walking; letting myself go, then walking for a month or more.
    My problem is Mood: I always walked because I loved my little city at night and just moving about it for a few hours. And be safe too, daylight or night do not be carless: be careful in everything you do, lol.

    • @scooby1961
      @scooby1961  Před 8 lety +1

      +Mr.Mosh The beauty of walking is not only that it burns off calories but that it makes you FEEL better and feel in control. When you are in control and making progress toward your goal, its easier to eat right, and when you eat right, the weight comes off. An upward spiral.

    Heya Scooby! I'm recovering from Anorexia. I've been weight restored for 5 months now. I was only 77lbs, I gained and weight was stable at 127lbs (eating a lot extra, increased hunger). Now that my appetite has returned to normal levels and I'm eating less I am gaining MORE again! Now 140lbs (I am 5'6 Tall). Biggest i've ever been in my life. Considering my Pre Ed weight was 117lbs but with good muscle mass (eating the same amount). I don't care if I get back to that weight but I would realistically like to lose a little. It just seems crazy that for 2 months I've been eating less and exercising (moderately, long brisk walks, stairs) again with no change?? I don't feel ready to start lifting yet but i'm doing body weight exercises to gradually strengthen my muscles again. I know I've lost a LOT of muscle and that is going to take some time. But why am I seeing no change? Do I need more food again to stimulate my metabolic rate? Or is it a matter of having little muscle? Thanks!

There is always a birthday party, or a work party, or just some event/occasion where people will pressure you to eat and say .. ohh, but its a one off special occasion blah blah blah. Well this hit the nail on the head right off the bat. Got fat after a few years of not working out and eating right. Started doing P90X in January (I've done P90X 4 times in the last 6 years), and ruptured my L4 in the 2nd week. I can no longer do any physical exercise and will likely not be able to for another 4-5 months.
    I have always been an on and off health/fitness type. I was 300lbs in high school and got down to 190 by the time I graduated. Up and down since then. This ruptured spine I have now is a clear result of my lack of staying consistent.

    Hey Scooby, love your channel and the massive amount of information you provide.
    I've learned a great deal just by listening to you. Thanks.
    I have a question about HIIT, when doing HIIT does it matter what type of excercises you're doing?
    In other words, Is doing a minute of burpess better than a minute of jumping jackes?
    What if I do one minute of jumping jacks, active rest (high knees jog) for 15 seconds, and repeat that for 20 minutes?
    Do I have to incorporate all sorts of movements or do I only have to worry about my heart rate?
    My only goal is to get leaner and lose body fat for the next 60 days.
    Thanks.

    For morbidly obese and obese people, walking is the all around king of low impact, low cost cardio. As you loos weight and gain fitness, intensity can be increased by walking up hills while maintaining a brisk pace. As you progress, walk faster up longer steeper hills, then maby start building reps and sets of hill repeats. Adding ankle and wrist weights is also an option.
    Walking at a fast steady pace on hilly terrain is interval training's Granddaddy. Can you tell I"m a big fan of walking.
    Thank you for all the fun, funny and informative vidios Scooby.

I don't starve myself, I just started a 2500 calorie a day diet, was at 3000 for the last 6 month's. I am eating healthy. and you know what? 2 weeks in and I'm down 10 pounds. I've still a long way to go. but I've only made progress when I started being smart!

    This is a GREAT video.
    Although these things may seem almost obvious to someone with relatively advanced knowledge in weight training and nutrition, it's sometimes stunning just how many people don't know these rather simple facts!
    And for the more advanced folks, it's always good to be reminded of this - ESPECIALLY the part about eating disorders and depression.
    P.S:
    Any chance that we will see a follow-up to the "How to get rich" video? That was some pretty insightful information.

      +Arseny Mescheriakov Yes, how to get rich part 2 is coming in the next 2 months. Yes, I would not be surprised if depression and other metal illnesses like eating disorders are responsible for a very large percentage of obese people. Its absolutely crazy, pardon the pun. We will pay $30,000 for a gastric bypass surgery but we will not pay for therapy and anti-depressents which would not only cure the obesity but raise their quality of life 100X.

    Its about being regular. Literally just need to start small but keep to your schedule. As you get fitter/stronger up your workouts. Eat a good diet, body fat is not about cutting food out, its about eating well. Do cardio regularly and eat good food. This does not mean you can’t eat bad food. You just shouldn’t eat a lot of bad food and don’t eat it regularly. This is a change of lifestyle. Not just a phase. Remember that.
    This is your new lifestyle. Stick to it. Find some buddies or a group to try and lose weight with. Get a Personal Trainer if you have to. Whatever it takes.

    For me the single best thing for keeping the weight down is... getting enough sleep! I suspect it's easier to get energy from food than fat, and if I haven't had enough sleep I'm too tired to get energy that way and reach for the sugars instead! A daily deficit of around 3-400 calories seems manageable, resulting in loss of perhaps 3lb a month. I lost 18lb in about 8 months by dropping 6lb, balancing it for a couple of weeks, dropping 6lb again... I'd do a weigh in every day but I wouldn't worry about the number, only the trend-line. Worked for me! DC

    • @scooby1961

      YES, sleep is critical for fat loss. Otherwise you lose muscle instead.

    dear Scooby , thank you for the great efforts and the great values you have been adding year over year...
    i have one comment, it is true that you should not cut your caloric intake dramatically, but that is true for some one who has 15% and below of body fat .. science says that if you are starving your self and you dont have that much amount of fat then your body might go and search for energy by eating some of your muscle "if you are starving your self".
    but for some one who has more than 25% of body fat and according to my experience NO... your body is not going to look for energy from your muscles you have a tons of stored energy that your body will love to take from.

    So i came here to ask Should i rest 2 day or 1 day per week? or keep doing all days workout and rest when i feel like to.

    The reason I fail my fav.diet after 10 -15 days is that ; although I could see my abs in the mirror which is something I adore, I also could trace my jaw bone.. I look like a skeleton covered with plastic bag so I always end up eating lots of bad food fast to gain few pounds and then I miss the abs so I start intermittent fasting again .. This is going on in my case since summer 2011.. Schön dass du auch deutsch kannst

    Frankly my intention was not to look pretty or anything but I felt uncomfortable getting out of breath after a few steps on the stairs, having trouble tying my shoe laces because of my belly and producing buckets of sweat (yes, it's also genetic that some people sweat more but having a lot of fat in your body doesn't exactly improve the situation). It was this feeling that made me tell myself "That's enough! I need to do something about this".
    On the 8th of January 2018 my weight was 96kg. I was even up to 99kg in 2017 because I had two operations of my wrist (one in the autumn of 2016 to place some metal screws etc. and a second one to remove those in the summer of 2017), which greatly reduced the ability to do types of sports I like.
    I reduced the sugar to a minimum (mostly getting it through fresh fruits), switched mostly to fish and chicken breast, started eating more often (before that sometimes I ate a huge dish at dinner time for the whole day), for fat I go mostly with nuts (breakfast = some fruits and raw nuts), started to gradually increase my training. Now (10th of March 2018 approx. 3 months later) my weight is down to 84kg so I dropped 12kg. Whenever I hit a plateau (when you don't get a single kilo off for days even though you keep training) I slightly increase my training. Since I have limited time to exercise every day I try to fit my training in 90minutes. Currently I do 4.5km of swimming my ass off and I feel great, since swimming also helps your breathing and takes all the stress away. In addition I also don't use public transportation and most of the time I'm on my bicycle (anywhere between 24 to 50-60km every day since I work in a different town).
    While this might seem like a lot it actually is not IF you do the gradual increase thing. As I've mentioned I do now 4.5km (breast stroke, freestyle, backstroke and a little bit of butterfly) but I started at like 1km or so. If I would have started with 4-5km at the beginning I would have given up and/or injured myself. I injured myself only once when I tried to do more that I knew I was able to handle (go figure) and it cost me a lot of pain in the left side of my neck for 3 days, inability to turn my head to the left side or up (for 2 days) and missed a lot of training time because of my stupidity. So the secret sauce is GRADUALLY INCREASE YOUR TRAINING!

    #1 reason is miss-information. Whether its about eating, training or both. Its not fat that's making people fat, its over consumption of carbohydrates for example. Adding cardio to your regimen will certainly help, but with proper workout plan, it's not necessary.

    Just a quick note, albeit arguably in the wrong place (because I couldn't post it where it belongs in the bug reports for your workout planner): The problem I had, namely not being able to record my workouts, apparently arose from choosing a workout through your questionnaire before setting up an account (DrJohn). There's a Warning one sees (if paying attention) before choosing a workout plan that says to set up an account first, so it was my "operating error", not a bug in your software. When I realized this, I set up another account and then chose a workout plan. Now everything works. However, since your current interface requires clicking Save 24 or more times to record a workout, I've decided to record my workouts by the old-fashioned method of paper & pen. *Thanks* for the workout plan, though. That's the important part: Having a plan and following through on it.

I'm in biggest loser competition at work and these other people are losing like 10% to my 6% a month bodyweight. I prepare all my lunches for the month with reasonable amounts of carbs protein and fat. Cut down to 1500 (Only 5'2) a day. I could drop my calories down lower but then I will bonk in the gym. I just hope people cant hack it for the whole 3 months. Thats the only way I think I'll win. 15 lbs to go to be "Normal weight" lol 20 down from last year and 25 more to go to get to "Normal" (which seems abnormal looking around sometimes)

    I don't disagree. What sucks for me is that I've been working out over 3yrs now since my type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Have lost over 88 pounds and came to a screeching halt at that point for over a year now. My sugar levels have been back down to normal for over 2yrs. Yet I can't lose anymore weight or get that stubborn left over stomach fat off. Then I find out I have extremely low testosterone, low vitamin D, and borderline high creatinine levels. With that being said, to high of creatinine levels and I'd have to go on dialysis. And what's worse is that taking creatine & protein shakes exacerbates your creatinine levels and so does strenuous exercise. My strenuous exercise got my sugar under control but at the same time raises that creatinine levels. Darn if I do & darn if I don't, just can't win.

    Loosing muscle is in my mind at least starvation mode.

      +Weiner Lover Your solution requires that you state your goals more clearly. Your bodyfat is too high so you need to lower it with a caloric reduction. You have no muscle mass so you need a resistance training program to get stronger and gain muscle. The two are NOT related, stop trying to tie them together.
