WHEN A TV INTERVIEWER pointed out to Michael Schumacher that his victory in the Italian Grand Prix in September was the 42nd of his career, surpassing the number of wins earned by the late Ayrton Senna, the German driver broke down and cried. For the first time, the world saw the human side of the icy Schumacher.

Two great men paying respect to an even greater man - pure class from MS - If ever happen to have an accident that eventually costs me my life, I hope it is in one go. I would not like to be in a wheelchair. I would not like to be in a hospital suffering from whatever injury it was. If I’m going to live, I want to live fully, very intensely, because I am an intense person. It would ruin my life if I had to live partially - Aytron was granted this, sadly Michael not ..

It was more emotional because he felt partially responsible for pushing him so hard. He clashed a few times with Senna, with Senna even accusing him of cheating. Off course he didn't have any fault, but i think it just burst out on that particular moment when he realized he got that record...

I was 11 when Senna died. Was an avid fan of F1 back then and coming from Britain, the BBC had the coverage. Watched that whole weekend. Barrichello's crash, Ratzenberger.....then Senna. Schumacher was driving for Bennetton then, Prost had retired so I knew Schumi would become Senna's new rival. And even though Damon Hill was British, Senna was my favourite. I was so glad when he moved to Williams.
THAT Sunday I watched it with my dad. After the crash, Murray Walker said that Senna's head moved so that gave us some brief hope. But even I knew it was a bad crash. I remember screaming at the TV because the camera was on a helicopter overlooking Senna's car. The marshalls were just standing round and I kept shouting at them to at least check on him. Just do something instead of stand there. Sid Watkins, the doctor came along shortly after in the medic's car. And the damn camera kept focusing on Senna as he was carried out of the cockpit and lowered on the floor. Senna's flameproof overalls were cut and you could see while the medics pumping his chest. Then, blankets were unfolded to block the cameras view. Senna was airlifted out....and the race was restarted. Something told me then that Senna was gone. But we didn't get an official announcement until later. When we did, I walked out of the house, went to a quiet spot and I cried. I'm not ashamed to admit it.....I cried and cried. I didn't watch another race until Australia that year. I couldn't imagine a starting grid without Senna's yellow helmet brightening the grid up. Sorry for the long comment....just wanted to share my experience that day. I'll never forget it.

Many thought that Schumi had no feelings, that he was a "robot". But in real life he was an emotional guy. Gerhard Berger said that initially he took MS for arrogant, but it soon changed after he had met with Schumacher and they had had a long conversation with each other.

There is so much going on on this clip. The immense pressure of having to finally deliver for Ferrari. Six races without a win and another championship seemingly going away. This race was the turning point, he won the next three races and got in the position to finally clinch the title in Japan. Also winning at Monza in front of the Ferrari fans, remembering Ayrton, realising the level he has reached by equaling his number of wins and how much pain, effort and dissapointment it took for this to happen, all the emotion burst out. The man worked like crazy to bring No.1 back to Ferrari only to see his dreams shattered year after year. Most of the time he had to push beyond what his car was capable of and yet there he was at the top step of the podium equalling Senna.
They weren't friends but I believe they had great respect for each other and just knew how good each other was. I believe Michael's idol growing up was most likely Stefan Bellof but Ayrton was his great rival.

Bloody hell! You're talking about my times and my boys as the "good old days". Sportmanship prevails always. It's only the bank accounts that change. They're bigger now and kids are bolder or is this just in our imagination. I remember Nikki Lauda saying at a time, must've been nineties, that a chimp could drive an F1 car. At that time, approx. 1993 Williams did put out a car with automatic gearbox, a first in F! history, soon banned, too. But Nigel Mansell, the great British champion of 1992, does bear va slight resembelance to Stephen Fry in Blackadder goes IV so... I don't know where I was getting to with this post but your comment must be most unvalid.

***** Cant say I agree friend. In Ayrtons last year with Mclaren in 1993, the MP4/8 car was down on power by around 80bhp compared to the Williams Renault of Prost, yet Senna still won 5 races. In Michaels first year with Ferrari, the car was an absolute pig, yet he won 3 races. Thats the mark of a great driver. Vettel is good, you have to be to win 4 titles, but lets see how he does when he doesnt have Adrian Newey in his corner.
