- This Restoration: 1980s Nylint Truck Restoration is one of the rustiest restorations I have done. This truck was just begging to be restored. This video will take you through the process of how I restored this 1980s Nylint Truck Restoration. The transformation is truly amazing.

This vintage 1980s Nylint Truck Restoration was in terrible condition. It was a goal of mine to find and restore a toy that had bad rust damage. This Nylint Dump Truck did not disappoint me. To complete this restoration I had to work hard on removing the rust and downsizing the rust pits. Sandblasting helped out a lot but I knew I would need to go old school sanding by hand. Furthermore, I tried something new on this restoration by utilizing bondo to fill in the rust pits and minor dings. Overall, the truck came out almost brand new.

I like that the paint isn't perfect. It's a survivor truck. And we don't all have access to fancy equipment. I rate this.
HI Steve, thank you for you comment. Paint for some reason is the part I find the hardest and want to be perfect. I plan on getting a powder coating system in the future which should result in better restorations. Thank you for taking the time out of your day not only to watch the video but also to leave me a comment. I sincerely appreciate it! Stay healthy my friend during these times. - R&R

My brother and I have a lot of Nylint Trucks as kids. Dad still has them all in pretty decent condition. Gonna have to relive the memories next time I'm there.
Hi Razz, that is awesome to hear! These are great toys and they still hold up over the years. Some of the older Tonkas are pretty expensive now on ebay. Even some of the Nylint toys are up there in price. I hope the restoration brought back a lot of good memories. Thank you for watching the restoration as well as leaving me a comment. I hope you are doing well during these times! Take care! - R&R

Great job for restoration truck! Next time you should put white Vinegar gallon in a big plastic box to remove Bad Rust for couple days it will be easy for you to use sanding faster on truck spending of less hours.
Hi Amy, thank you for this great comment! I am glad you enjoyed the restoration and I am thankful for your suggestion :). Happy New Year my friend. - R&R
Nice restoration job. They have a body filler for minor imperfections that you should use instead of bondo this way you won’t end up using to much bondo and taking forever to sand it all off. Vinegar and water is wonderful for rust removal but can take a while. I restored the nylint double hopper truck and the first half of it was about as rusty as your dump truck and I put it in a large container and mixed more vinegar than I should of and it took about a week sitting in that solution but all of the rust came off and it was bare metal again.
Hi Donald, thank you so much for all the suggestions. I am constantly trying to improve in my restorations. I really appreciate viewers such as yourself taking the time to pass down wisdom to me so I can get better. Thank you again! Till next time, take care my friend. - R&R
Paint job @ 💯.. Bondo turned out great ..
Wow thank you Amir! That means a lot. Paint is something I have been struggling with and I am trying to get better. Thank you again for your nice comment. I hope you are doing well and staying healthy. I hope to see you in the comment section in my other videos. Take care brother! - R&R
Nice restoration job. Next time when you have something rusty you should dip it in a rust remover first, vinegar and water works great although that ones a slow process. Also when using bondo put it on in very thin coats and sand between those coats. When painting don’t try to spray it all at once because you can get drips and runs, several light coats when painting and let dry between coats will save you lots of headaches in the end.
Hi Donald, thank you for all the advice brother. I really appreciate you taking the time to write such a detailed comment and I will be sure to use some of these tips in my restorations. I hope you and your family are doing well during these tough times. Take care my friend. - R&R

Hi Bruce,
Its great seeing you again in the comments. Thank you for sharing this great family story with me. You are right when you say this trucks are better than the plastic stuff. Things now days are just not built to last or take a beating. This truck were build to last and will last for hundred years. Thank you so much for your continued viewership my friend. - R&R
You made the tires shine, where? Some of the sanding and sandblasting shots took too long and I think some of the plastic restoration would have been cool to see. I like your stuff so PLEASE take this as constructive criticism. Thanks for being a teacher and keep up the good work.
Hi Matthew, thank you for you comment. I love your feedback and I greatly appreciate it. I am always trying to get better and make for a better viewer experience. Everyone learns the hard way with Bondo! My first time was a nightmare. It was the fenders of my car too.I learned after that, thin layers, only put on thin layers because most of it will be comming back off any ways. It still came out looking nice. Now you know what not to do. I love how the cars in the back ground sound like a NASCAR race.
Hi RC Hobbyist, thank you for leaving me a comment. Hopefully you found it just as amusing as I did. Although I was kicking myself while I had to sand all of it off. I am glad I had my Bosch sander. Beautiful restoration job. I restored the nylint double hopper truck a few years back and let me tell you the front part of the truck was rusted so bad I let the truck and trailer soak in vinegar and water for a week and it took all the rust off. The back trailer just needed to be sanded and repainted but when I got done with it it was showroom new.
Hi Donald, wow that sounds pretty bad. It must have been super rusty to sit in vinegar for a week lol. It says a lot about the hard work you went into restoring. Thank you for sharing that with me. Its really nice reading others stories about toys they restored or how they played with these toys when they were a kid. I appreciate you leaving me a comment as well as watching the restoration. Wow! It turned out great! Kudos to you for sticking with it to the finish. Most would have given up when they saw the extent of the rust, then the bondo would have done the rest in. I've used that and it's a nightmare to sand off. It only takes once to learn to use it sparingly. Nice job! Love the colors you chose!

Great job without a lot of fancy tools! One tip for you... don't stir the Bondo, fold it together. There will be less air bubbles and therefore less chance of little holes in the Bondo after sanding.

I saw your Instagram post on this truck and have been looking for you on YT for a while. I’m glad I found you as I subscribed straight away. Outstanding job without all the fancy tools of the other restorers. The smart thing to do would have been to bin that truck, but your skills are amazing. Can’t wait to see the quality when you purchase powder coating equipment. Had to laugh with the Bondo. You know now, less is more. I was always taught to used as little as possible, scrape off as much as you can because that’s easier than sanding. Great job mate. 🇦🇺👍

I have this one. Missing bed. Not restored it yet. Probably make wood flat bed on it? Not shir yet. Awesome restoration! Also we're did you get the windshield? I need one for mine. The roof is original though mine has same. I had several of these Ford Nylint trucks growing up. The only one that stands out that had hole in roof was the Nylint farm set. The truck was same. But had flat bed with White cattle sides. The roof was made like that because the set came with a farmer. That's why the floor has the hole in it. I got the farm set in Christmas of "86. All I have left of it is pictures and memories. Thank you for preserving such a special time in my life.
Freakin nice restoration...member them toys back in the day...😎👍

To do it faster than sanding get a five gallon bucket with a lid and a quart of micuic acid fill bucket with water about two inches from top add the can of acid put parts on wires and lower into bucket with a little of wire to hang out of the bucket and put the lid on and wait for a couple of days check the parts this is the fastest way to get everything clean takes paint and rust away wash with water and dry your ready to paint
Do you check the comments on your channel

Great Job! How did you clean up the wheels? I have a Nylint truck with the same wheels and I haven't attempted cleaning them up yet. I'm afraid of damaging the white lettering.
Hi Joe DIY, first off I love you videos and am a big fan of your channel. So I tossed the old wheels because they had dry rot on them and were warped. I purchased the tires you see in the video off of ebay that had the white writing already on them. To make them look cleaner I used ArmorAll on the tires and rims. Its the same ArmorAll that you would use on your vehicle. I let the plastic absorb it and then put on a couple more light coats. Lastly, I too was afraid of damaging the white lettering but as long as you keep the coats light you will be okay. Let me know if this helped! - R&R

We should invent a 'rotisserie' type object holder that slowly turns as you paint. Holding objects up in the air and slowly turning them for even coverage. I usually paint on a home built lazy susan. I would even consider a wind up turntable but cannot find the spring mechanism.
Hi Bruce, lol I think those might already be a thing. I am not sure though. A turntable is not a bad idea. I plan on doing powdercoating at some point. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave me a comment as well as watch the restoration. I hope to see you in the comment section on my other videos Bruce. I hope you and your family are doing well. Take care brother! - R&R

What a terrific restoration job I really thought that it was beyond restoration it had me watching your craftsmanship, I really enjoyed it, and I have subscribed . Regards John
Thank you John! This was by far the hardest restoration because of the damage the truck sustained. I am very happy that you enjoyed the video. I sincerely appreciate you taking the time not only to watch the video but also to leave me a comment. I hope that the future restoration videos are just as satisfying to watch. Lastly, I hope you stay healthy during these crazy times. Take care my friend. - R&R

@@RestoreandRepair Sure thanks👍👀👏👏👏
Great job on the restoration. I just wanted to point out that that model in particular didn’t originally have a sunroof, so the rusted out roof was the correct one. Also, the entire truck was yellow and not red and yellow - although I do prefer your paint scheme.
Hi B Arruda, I looked at an original sand and gravel truck and it was yellow and red. Can you send me a link to a google image of the original one being all yellow. I really appreciate your help on this. Thank you for taking the time to comment as well as watch my restoration. I hope you enjoy some of the newer ones. Take care my friend. - R&R
@@RestoreandRepair You're right - the Sand and Gravel truck is in fact red and yellow. But the Dumper model is all yellow. An interesting fact that I just learned today is that some had sunroofs, while others didn't (depending on the year of production). I believe the one you restored is this one, given the original sunroof-less roof: www.etsy.com/listing/707708898/vintage-nylint-dumper-truck-metal-toy?show_sold_out_detail=1&ref=nla_listing_details

Love the restoration, but i wouldn’t eat any of the fruit in your garden after that! 😂
Hi Aki Dakin, lol a few people have messaged me about the tree. It is an illusion that is created from the angle of the camera. The paint and where I was spraying was actually 3-4 feet at the very least from the tree. It looks like the paint is going into the tree but it is not. Anyways, I greatly appreciate your concern as well as you taking the time to comment on the video. I hope you are doing well during these crazy times. Please stay healthy my friend. - R&R
how do ya think they get yellow apples :)
Gave you a fight but came out great.
Hi Mence, yeah this one was rough but came out nice. Thank you for your great comment. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch the restoration. I hope you enjoy all the other ones. Take care my friend. - R&R
whole lot easier way than hand sand is the dremal sanding pandle sander its about 2 in round and realy cleans up stuf like u got there i use them on toys rusty guns saves a lot of l bone grease i never used bondo
I had one of those. I wish I still had it.
Hi Clint, I hope this video brought back a lot of great memories. Its cool making these videos and reading comments like yours. These videos almost have a sense of nostalgia to them. My first restoration video definitely brought back memories of my with my Tonka truck when I was 4 years old. Thank you for you comment as well as watching the video. Take care! - R&R
I also had that blue nylint freightliner tractor trailer. It was a beautiful blue metallic paint. I’d give anything to have it again. My brother had the gold one. The golden eagle.
I didnt know they did gold. That sounds awesome!
It's perfect ❤️ it
Hi Scott, Thank you for your comment. I am happy to read that you enjoyed the restoration. I thought the restoration came out nicely. Not the best but I am still learning. I hope to continue to see you in the comment section for future videos. Please stay safe and healthy during these times. Take care brother. - R&R
Might not be a perfect paint job but its way better than i could do. I would like to know how long it took you to restore this truck? Not including wait time for the parts you either had delivered or went and picked up yourself. I really enjoy watching your videos keep up the good work and keep them coming. Thanks
Hi Jay, thank you for your kind comment. It really made my day reading what you had to say and I am glad you enjoyed the restoration. I do have a new restoration up right now. Its a Nylint Roadster. I hope you enjoy that one as much as this one. Take care my friend. - R&R
Great job bro, i like the red👌👌
Thank you z fist for leaving me this nice comment. I think the red came out looking pretty cool. It was supposedly the original color of the truck. Thank you again for leaving me a comment and watching. Take care! - R&R

Was your sandblaster plugged or low on media?? Seems like the spray was really inconsistent? BTW, I enjoyed the video! Keep it up!
Hi Aaron, nah I just have a bad air compressor. The thing gives me trouble all the time. - R&R
Looks like you have A TON of sanding ahead of you!!
Lol this project did have a TON of sanding. The hardest part was sanding the bondo off. I messed up and put way too much on. Now I know for the future is to go easy on the bondo lol - R&R
Trial and error as they always say...
@@tomtbi This is true
the only thing i see wrong is that you didnt take the dents in the chassis out. other than that , good restoration

Loved the vid and subscribed! Thank you for a great vid and great work:) Might I suggest a primer filler for the rust pits?:)
Hi Brian70Cuda, thank you for your comment and subscribing to the channel. I hope that the restorations can continue to upgrade and get better. In regards to primer filler for the rust pits, I tried that on previous restorations (check previous videos in channel). Unfortunately, it did not do the best job. It worked well for the small rust pits but not for large ones. The primer I use is one that will fill rust pits as well. So for this restoration I went over kill with it by putting bondo AND a heavy primer. All in all I appreciate your feedback. If you see anything that might help upgrade the restorations please don't hesitate to toss me another comment. Thanks again Brian and I hope you and your family are staying safe during these times. Take care brother! - R&R
@@RestoreandRepair Thank you very much for the well wishes and I hope you and yours are doing well too. The only reason I mentioned the primer was I know how much work it is trying to smooth out a heavy coat of mud. I never pick on someone elses work, not in my place to do so. Have a great day and thank you for writing bro:) Glad I found your channel!
Those tires had some milage on them!!!
Hi Massboy11, thank you for leaving me a comment. Yeah, the original tires were all warped and looked like a hexagon rather than a circle. I hope you enjoyed the restoration. I look forward to seeing you in the comment section for my other restoration videos. Lastly, I hope you are doing well during these tough times. Take are my friend. - R&R
@@RestoreandRepair beautiful work.

You did an awesome Job!! Love the open roof!
Thank you Diane for you comment! It was so weird to receive this truck and see that it did not have an open roof. Pictures of the original truck all had open roofs on them. It was difficult to track down an original roof for this vintage truck but I think finding it and placing it on the truck made a big difference. It also keeps the truck looking like how its supposed to. Thank you again for taking the time to write a comment! Take care - R&R

I would have to get a good look at the truck cab windows, but I think this Sand and Gravel truck was made in the early 1960's
Hi indyloa, this is a great point you make. My best guess was either the 70's or 80's. I have seen pictures of both eras and they look the same. I haven't seen one from the 60's yet but you could be right. Thank you for your comment! - R&R
What makes you decide to replace the tires? Were they damaged? Is it easy to find parts?
HI jlovelace486, the plastic tires were dry and warped. For these tires it is easy to find parts but for others it can be challenging and a waiting game to wait for parts to appear online. - R&R
