  • Restoration: 1950s Tonka Truck Restoration was a tough one. This is a 1958 Gambles Tonka Stepside Pickup Truck that was originally bright white with green stickers. In this video, you will watch the process of how I restore this vintage item back to new. I hope you enjoy this 1950s Tonka Truck Restoration. This was one of the toughest restorations but the transformation is truly incredible.

Thank you for this video. I work in healthcare and really needed to watch something "soothing". So much of my day to day is just helplessly watching people die. 95% of my patients are elderly and Covid has hit them hard. But you restore life to objects that most would toss aside. I can only imagine how much time and work went into making this video. The culture in the U.S. is to put our elderly in a home with other elders and so many times they are forgotten about unless it's Christmas. Thank you for reminding me that there are people out there still see value and beauty in what has been discarded.

I am thankful that this video was able to bring you some comfort amidst this tough time. If you know of anything else that would enjoy this video and get some relief from it please feel free to send them the link. I will be in prayer for you and all the people you take care. After the sandblasting, you could have used an anti-rust inhibitor to help slow the rust from reoccurring. Before you applied the first coat of paint, you could have used a filling compound and then sanded smooth. Then the primer, then the wet sand, then the final paint. You worked real hard on this project. I agree with the ultraviolet light cleaning process. Best I have seen for plastic, tires, and white wall tires. Remarkable restoration. Keep up the good work.

I just admire the attention to detail you put into your restorations! Like I said before, you are very talented. I've seen others with all the high end fancy equipment just rush through a project. They will powder coat w/o primer, just a quick sandblast; and when it's done, you can see all the pitting. No sanding. No love. Most of it is replacement parts even if the original is salvageable. Very lazy restorations. It's as if they're doing it for the views & not the art. Just a lack of respect for the object they're restoring. But not your work. You can tell you truly enjoy what you're doing and it shows! Beautiful results, once again.

Hey Annette! How have you been? Thank you for your kind comment. I am happy with the powder coating system. I though the pieces came out great. Yeah there are two spokes on the way front that had to be bent where some of the powder came out while being put into the oven. Since those spots were covered with primer and wont rust I figured I would leave it alone since I am very new to powder coating. The spots were extremely small. Great observation :) I hope you have been well! - R&R

Nice effort and finish. Two thing to suggest. First, if you are going to do a primer coat to help fill in imperfections, use rattle can type so the wet sanding actually accomplishes something. Trying to wet sand powder coat is not easy. I powder coat and it is basically a plastic coating. Second, you can polish the grill section and bumper and if you can't get them to shine, use powder coat chrome on them. It looks great. Thumbs Up!

Hi Texas Terry Thank you for you kind comment. The paint for this truck was white. There are 2 ways of knowing this. First, if you watch you can still see the original paint under the bumper where it was protected from the elements. Second, the Gambles trucks were predominately white especially in 59'. I always leave the chance of me being wrong but that would mean this truck had been restored before and the restorer painted it white and replace the decals along with leaving it outside a long time. Hi Bill, thank you for your kind comment. I really made me happy. This is a really hard question because each restoration has brought its own challenges from paint issues, to equipment issues, etc. I think the hardest one was the nylint roadster. I say that because I think I primered and painted that car 3 times. I did not show it in the video but there was major paint issues on that car and then the 3 time was the charm which the paint came out great. But having to take everything down to metal basically 3 times and then painting it was rough. Thanks for the great question. Just a heads up, the next video will have music. By Adding a box in the back you could make a nice ice cream truck

Hey Marthy, man ice cream on some of those days would have been great. It was around 95-100 in my backyard. You are right though, it does look like an retro ice cream truck :P - R&R

Beautiful restoration. It seems that the older models were made of a heavier gage sheet metal? I noticed you struggling trying to unbend the fastening tabs. Great job, and thank you for a wonderful vid! Looking forward to watching more of your vids, this is the first one for me. Have a great day! JP JR.

Great job, just had a thought, that maybe using a wire wheel (brass) to help remove the surface rust (post blasting) would speed up your work and makes for a even surface to do the final sanding on,
