Magic Johnson said when they played the Bulls for the chip, Pippen picked him up full court and banged with him all the way down court every play. He was tired just from bringing the ball up the court, if you do that now “whistle”. The game is geared towards offense because that’s what makes $. These guys nowadays hardly play real D besides putting a hand up to block the shot.

The only way to find out if these guys are better skilled is to bring the hand check and physicality back. If they can do what they do offensively despite hand checking and hard lane bumps then we can say they are better. Another thing, if this is the peak of offense in basketball it’s a shame because ratings are low. Not very many people are watching.

Do you know why they got rid of hand checking? Because players are so much bigger and stronger now. They can completely control offensive players with it. And games that end 69-76 are not fun to watch. It's proven in the numbers...Some people like the defensive battles, maybe you're one of them. But the majority of NBA fans (and even other sports) do not like that. And the NBA is a business first and foremost. They'll analyze and figure out what brings the most money. If you think the NBA makes less money now...well you aren't paying attention to player contracts and NBA salary caps which are based on revenue.

One is a D-1 football player, my middle son, will be receiving a scholarship for track (multiple offers)
My youngest, is 6’3 running and jumping and is more athletic than his brothers (doesn’t work as hard) In all seriousness, I’ve had these conversations with my now ex wife. Genetics are important, they are also tricky, but when it’s said and done you want your seeds to have the best chance. It should be the way all young men think.
brothers thought I was crazy because I was always on the athletic women ~ track, basketball, volleyball.
I’ve explained this to my sons, when extolling them “I gave you the good genetics (I’m 6’4 mom 5’8 athlete) it’s up to you guys to put in the work.
Man, I still think of this one girl I dated in college from New Zealand 6’1 volleyball player….

It was easier to play defense in the past because the game was in the paint. That “tough” defense is much more difficult when you’re 30 feet from the rim. If you lean in too hard the ball handler is going around you. If you send help a shooter is wide open for a 3.
Simply bringing back hand checking won’t do anything. But it would help if they went back to the old traveling rules. That gather step nonsense is too much.

The peak of NBA offense is now because the Hell depths of NBA defense is now. Put Jordan, Kobe, AI, KG, Shaq, etc in this era and it's a wrap. Sh***t.... put good, lesser celebrated players like Tim Hardaway, Mahmoud, Reggie, Grant, TMAC, etc, today, and they would get buckets. Today's rules punish good defense and today's game plans have given up defense & defensive rebounding in favor of 3's and fast offense. And the players don't put in the same effort as before.
Luka, KD, JJ Reddick & others have spoken on this too. When Luka said it's easier to score here than in Europe, that's because of defense. The offensive sets here are so much simpler here because the defense has become non existent here. I respect today’s players. Remember when Westbrook was getting those triple doubles. After he averaged triple double for a year, the next time, the fans, the media and the league ain't as thrilled about it. In one week, we had multiple 60+ points. Peak offense, rock bottom defense.

How is this the Golden Era when the defense's arm is tied? Those players scoring those points, are their teams anywhere close to competing for a championship? If the teams are looking for longer, bigger players, explain how J Murray was cooking all those sorry asses, last year? How is it that Jimmy Buckets and his smaller team cooked all those fools in the East last year all the way to the finals? PG shrunk in OKC and it's the smaller Westbrook who had to carry the team to make them competitive against Dame, who might i add, is another smaller guy. Like wtf are these fools talking about? Y’all crazy, it’s not just defense… The offense in the league is WAY better. Go back and watch someone like Dennis Rodman, key part of a dominant championship franchise, he could BARELY score. Now guys who have his current job are hitting reverse layups and threes, it’s a little of both, but it’s very tiring hearing people say it’s all bad defense, because it’s just not true.

Yep. Seein rules that don’t allow defenders to do their thing. Great bigs are one thing. And theirs only a few that got the ball handling skills like that.

Sports evolve. There are ebbs and flows. The pace and scoring in the NBA in the 60s and 70s was very high. They trended downwards during the 90s and into the early 00s, due in part to a diluted talent pool with six expansion teams, changing coaching philosophy, and a myriad of other factors. Pace and scoring have ascended again for the past 10-15 years due to analytics, increased skill and shooting ability across positions, rule changes, influx of international talent, etc. Which style and era one prefers is subjective. In baseball, there was the dead ball era, live ball era, integration, raised mound, steroid era, analytic-HR-or-SO era with pitchers being more dominant and playing fewer innings.

You can’t play defense like they use to but the fact is players are 10 times more skilled than all those old heads

There’s no defense being played in the league anymore

There is defense the problem is that the offense is so far ahead of what the defense can actually be it looks like there's no defense if these players in the way they play play the 90s players and that competition they blow them out by 20+ points every game. Because the shooting in the skill level is so much higher now than it was 30 years ago and it's not even close when people start to understand that then we can start having some real convos
