  • 79th Street in Chicago's south side is a east west street that runs from the shores of the Lake Michigan, South Shore Drive US-41 in the east all the way to suburb of Willow Springs out west. It runs through south side Chicago city of Burbank, Bridgeview and gets cut off at Willow Springs at the confluence of I-294 State route 171 and US highway 45. It then continues after the Des plaines River into City of Burr Ridge for few miles and eventually T bones into State route 83.
Today we will cover a segment of about 8 miles from South Shore Drive to South Kedzie Avenue in city's South Side. The trip will pass through neighborhoods of South Shore, The Bush, little bit of Avalon Park, East Chatham, Chatham, Auburn Park, Auburn Gresham and Beverly View. Time taken to complete is about 25 minutes. Enjoy

I remember when 79th Street was buzzing with stores and activity. Families would stroll down the street in the evenings to window shop and get a bite to eat or walk around the licking ice cream cones.

10:51 Wow, this street has changed quite a bit... Laundromat Limo used to be on the left, Burger King got remodeled, Marathon used to be Amoco and then BP by late 2002, and the streetlights, the library and McDonald's are still the same.
@ 11:13, Boost Mobile used to be a barber shop and Chatham Foods was right across the street, and a very old Laundromat with wooden floors used to be on that same side of the street across from Ruggles Elementary. The 3 story building might've been demolished.
@ 12:24 on the left side near the Dan Ryan expressway, an abandoned, tarnished building with graffiti stood at the spot for the longest time. One of the graffiti in large print said "God did it".
@14:05, Moo & Oink was on the right side, and Dominick's & Coin Laundry was on the left.
@14:47, "2001 Hair Salon" used to be somewhere on the right. Kids used to open & play around fire hydrants around this area back in the day.

I like the architecture of the buildings at 9:57. As far as I'm concerned, some of the worst neighborhoods in cities have the best architecture. (The modern, glass and steel buildings of the better neighborhoods, with some exceptions, look cold and boring.)

@@static6787 Nah, it's mainly Hyde Park, Bronzeville, Uptown (near North Ave.) and some of the Westside near I-290 that's been gentrified since the Mid 00's. Areas that are close to Downtown tend to experience gentrification. Most people who don't live in the deadly parts of the Southside steer clear of it.
