Chicago downtown delivery | I have to call 911

- POV: The most nerve-wracking delivery in downtown Chicago
Yesterday, I had an unforgettable and heart-pounding experience while delivering a load in downtown Chicago. Let me tell you, finding the location amidst the maze-like streets was a challenge in itself. But little did I know that the real thrill was yet to come.
As I arrived at the right location, I realized the docks were cunningly hidden under a bridge or tucked away beneath a tunnel. Maneuvering my semi-truck through the narrow streets felt like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Chicago streets definitely weren't designed with trucks in mind. I had to make wide turns, which seemed impossible at times.
Feeling trapped and out of options, I made the decision to call the authorities for assistance. I dialed 911, hoping they could help assess the situation and guide me out of this tight spot. Traffic came to a halt as we strategized for about 15 minutes to safely reverse the truck. The tension was palpable, and my nerves were on edge.
Eventually, we located the elusive dock, but the challenges weren't over yet. Every corner was tight, and I required an escort to navigate under the bridge. It was a humbling realization that no matter how skilled or experienced you are as a trucker, there are times when you genuinely need a helping hand to reach your destination.
Yesterday was a whirlwind of emotions. I was sweating, my nerves were frayed, but above all, my priority was delivering the load safely and soundly. No accidents, no unfortunate encounters with the bridge.

My anxiety would never let me become a trucker.. shoutouts to yall
Thank you for appreciating truckers
Once you do it a few times, it becomes pretty low anxiety. My first few months driving I was freaked out by everything. LOL
Yeah, think I'm going to stick to American Truck Simulator.
GPS sent you to the front of the building, you didn’t see any loading docks there. You tried to circle back around the block but the road was not for buses or trucks. So you stopped before getting stuck underneath the bridge. You called 911 to help you back up. You did the best you could have and I give you mad respect. You were under pressure but still kept your cool. And you took directions from non-drivers very well. You showed me what it takes to be a decent driver. Thank you my guy and best of luck in the future. I appreciate you and the video!! Excellent job 🫡
This is one of the best comments I've read here. Thank you, sir, for addressing that and appreciating my work. I'm not a perfect driver, but I think I did the right thing more than doing it myself, and it could lead to something bad. I always think about the worst thing that could happen if I don't ask for help. That's why I still have my CDL for 8 years now. Trucking isn't about competition. You must accept your mistakes and do better about it. Nothing is perfect on the road, no matter how you plan your trip…😊🙏
@@TruckingwithJakeHey no problem my brother. As I prepare to operate tractor trailers myself, I hope to find good people like you along the way. Us drivers should work together to make things easier and get the job done!
@@TruckingwithJake you are a pro trucker some times you will get tie coraner it can get hard and scary for ya brother keep up the great work
My father was a truck driver for 45 years. Guys, BELIEVE ME when I say that driving a truck in a city is IMMENSELY difficult. Please be patient with these guys.
It’s a TON of stress and you constantly have to remember low viaducts and streets that you can’t drive on because you’ll get stuck. If you see them having trouble making a right turn, it’s also helpful to back up if you can (if you’re in the left turn lane that they need to use to make the turn).
Truck drivers are right up there with military, in my eyes. Without you guys, no one gets any goods. And you sacrifice so much of your personal lives to do this job. Btw, you did great and made the correct call.
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment here and for appreciating our work. It's so nice to see a comment like this. Hopefully, everyone has this understanding. They never understand this until they become a trucker. Have a wonderful day.😊❤️🙏
Truck driving really ain’t for the weak. Mad respect for you bro being brave enough to take that load.
Thanks man 😊
Ignore the first response isn’t mean for you
Appreciate that brother
Smart driver had a problem called for help.
I drove a service van for 30 years in and around Chicago. I always hated the calls in the heart of downtown. I can’t even imagine making deliveries with a full size semi trailer. God bless anyone that drives a big truck.
Thanks for watching 😊❤️🙏
As a city bus driver in Chicago, it's hard enough navigating a transit bus thru our narrow streets. I can't imagine driving a semi...
It’s tough I was delivering here very nerve wrecking 🤣I got out ok.
* laughs in European*... just kidding!, I know American semis are longer than the ones we got here, so might even be harder. I wish regular car drivers would understand the amount of space needed to navigate semis around cities...
Bus drivers get a great big 👍 along with the truck drivers. You get all the traffic plus you have to deal with the general public, a challenge in itself.
There should almost be a relay point in a more accessible area and from there everything goes into the city on box trucks
That looked impossible, incredible job and well done for being as safe as possible. Best trucker ever!
Thank you so much 😊 for appreciating us ❤️😊
@@TruckingwithJake You sir have skill
Bro! This is funny, not because you were struggling but because WE were able to help you. I'm one of the security officers on camera. 😊
My crew and I help drivers at least twice a week through this. Our Dock personnel is second to none too. 👍🏼
Best of luck bro!
Mart Security and Dock.
Oh hey bro! Wow I wasn’t expecting that you’ll be commenting here and that you see this. lol. Which one are you in the video. I got hard time finding the place but the help I get from all of you was spectacular. I appreciate you guys! 😊🙏
I have so much respect for truckers. You guys have to drive basically a limo that’s way heavier and transports important materials. Dealing with idiots on the road and trying to find where you’re going sucks, especially on these narrow windy roads. Thank you for doing what you do.
Hi hello bro thanks for commenting here. I appreciate your thoughts and support
Thank you we really appreciate it
Limo? Try RV. Limos weigh like 10k pounds a fully loaded tractor trailer is 60k
@@user-lu1np3si5w how often would you deal with situations like this? i always considered being a trucker because i always thought being on the open road and floatin gears would be fun for a job but i couldnt do this type of driving this shit would have my blood pressure raised immediately
Hats off to that dude with the blue bulls hat directing you. Dude knew what he was doing!
He is a very good guy and very helpful 😊 thanks for watching
I hope they pay you well brother, that was insane
Thank you 😊 . Unfortunately I did not get paid extra for this delivery
All that work and the truck was nearly empty, LMFAO. Tell me they couldn't have sent a smaller truck. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
You did everything you could to minimise the "damage" in the situation and that's great. The lady telling you where the actual dock is was nice. And then the person with the scooter and the Volvo coming out of the street right at 25:20 really struck me. Gotta love it when people make an effort for you to get where you need to and thus create less traffic problems along the way. But the manager that came jogging out and started directing you and the traffic took the cake; he needed that delivery and he needed it to go smoothly and he did what it takes. Great video man.
Hey bro. I appreciate your time here. I love how you say and review the video. It means you watch it. Thank you, bud, for watching ❤️❤️❤️🤛🏻.
My nerves were shot just watching you go thru all this. I live in the Chicago Burbs, and I hate driving downtown in a car. No way I'd do what you did in a 53' trailer and sleeper truck. You're a brave man and skilled to take on the task successfully. All that trouble, for barely any freight in the trailer...not worth the headaches. Hope they charged a fortune for that delivery.
Thanks for watching sir and the appreciation. Unfortunately there is no extra work pay for this delivery 😢
You don't mean it?@@TruckingwithJake
if you live in the suburbs, maybe consider taking the metra and walking, biking, and/or using our train system. much better experience and much cheaper
Huge respect to y’all I would never have the patience or wanna do that downtown especially in Chicago
Thank you
this should be the final boss in truck simulator
Thanks for watching 😊
Somehow i came across this video. I would like to take the time out & let you know you did a great job in this situation driver. Im from Chicago so i know how rough it is to drive in downtown Chicago with a 53ft trailer. Hats off to you. You didn't get stuck or damage anything. You got the delivery safely there. Fyi downtown has 2 levels in some areas. Upper & lower be safe driver great job👍
Thank you so much for your nice comment. And for appreciating how I safely manage to get out. ❤️❤️😊
I grew up in the northern suburbs of Winnetka, Illinois and my husband grew up on the Southside of Chicago and he hates taking the Red Line coming from his area into Downtown Chicago. I really appreciated you truck drivers out there. Thank you for your services because my uncle drives trucks to different states.
Thank you 😊 very much for your time here ❤️😊
Wow. I never heard of a truck driver reaching and calling 911. The humility is admirable. A lot are too proud or ashamed to ask for help. I appreciate that you shared this story so that others could benefit.
It’s the right thing to do right bro? Thank you 😊 ❤️🙏
@@TruckingwithJake Hi Jake. Yes you did the right thing since the company isn't answering. Btw, babae po ako. Hehehe. Ingat sa pagdrive.
Better to call the local non-emergency number for the police (just google it). 911 is for life threatening emergencies. By using this you take away emergency dispatch resources for someone who's life may depend upon it.
I drive a truck in and around Chicago daily. There's a lot of docks hidden down on the lower service areas in the city. It's definitely nerve wracking tye first few times.
It is bro. And it’s my first time here. People don’t understand 😁
you did the right thing by calling the police some truckers would of just panicked and did it on there own but you did the right thing help of law enforcement
I think I did the right thing too. It’s not going to make you less of a trucker to ask some help in this situation. Thanks fort your comment here sir
@@TruckingwithJakewas the smart thing to call and not try it and just wait
@@TruckingwithJakesometimes we need help 😊
@@nickpatrick1636 I agree bro
Chicago is crazy wild with these underground tunnelstreets!
This city is obviously not suitable for such big semis
great cops
They are the best
This actually highlights changes that could be made logistically. Truck fleets can handoff outside of cities and use more small trucks after handoffs.
Exactly . I don’t understand why they send me here without a special note .
Great job. You didn't loose your cool. Driving in a city is definitely more of a pain. Chicago and Manhattan.
Thanks 😊 for your appreciation 😊🙏❤️🙏
That’s a good decision Jake calling the back up Cops the downtown chicago it’s really crazy to drive specially the road it’s too narrow not like downtown LA it’s different, right here is crazy, that’s why I’m coming back home to LA hopefully next year. Good job Jake it’s better to get some help than making a mess 👍
I agree 😊😊 I think it’s the right thing to do. It’s being responsible . 😊
That's why I hate delivering in Chicago or new York that was crazy brother
First time here bro . It was intense and scary haha .
Thank you for sharing. I’ve always admired the brilliance and skills of lorry drivers watching from the outside, but to experience difficult spots on CZcams was like I was next to you. That’s was immensely scary and so much pressure. I would’ve had a meltdown just sitting beside you. Loved watching the cool handling when under pressure. I will still watch from the outside. It’s just pure art, skill and brilliance.
The craziest truck maneuvers i have ever seen. You did a very great job bro keep it up.
Thanks 😊 for watching here my friend ❤️😊🙏
Bro I use to do OTR trucking but I no longer do that, so I’m a local truck driver with 4 years experience but man after watching this video. I have respect for you. You have balls of steel. I’ve been to Chicago but not like this where you are. After watching this video I have so much anxiety and I still do if I go the busiest place like Chicago. You’re awesome man. 🙏👏👏
Hey brother . Thanks for this comment. I appreciate you watching. Yeah man I was feeling nervous here haha.
Good job brother I’m glad you called the police to assist you and the cops were very nice as well.
Appreciate it brother ❤️😊🙏🤛🏻 I just did the right thing
Respect for uploading for us to watch!
Thanks for watching 😊🤛🏻
I know this feeling bro… I had to do the same thing in nyc. Way better yo just call and get help instead of winging it and wind up really in a situation you can’t reverse… shout out to those officers by the way I’ve learned over the years that most of them have a lot of respect for us and are willing to help more often then not
It’s the right thing to do. Thanks brother
For the future, make small steering adjustments. When guard was explaining, listen, do not talk. If necessary put the flashers on, get out of the truck and walk the situation through. I had to move a postal box to make a corner once! Any delivery after this will be a piece of cake!
They hate truckers there! Bro, you're doing a great job! 👍🏼
I’m from Chicago and that’s further from the truth. My dad was a trucker. We love truckers…the corrupt politicians don’t.
Shit man I give you big props. Anyone can drive in open spaces but those who can navigate the cities deserve respect.
Thanks bro. I’m not perfect driver. Situation like this is unpredictable. We had to do the right thing. Thanks for addressing that 😊
WOW! Great perspective on a hard job and helpful CPD!
I live near Chicago and go there/drive there quite often. A lot of spots its hard to drive in even with just a normal like sedan basically. I cant imagine how it is for truck drivers trying to squeeze around those tiny streets. And no worries on having to call the police, you were under stress and you handled it. A lot of people, myself included, probably wouldve let the stress take over. nice job
Thank you for watching and your comment here. I appreciate that you address that I did the right thing. Some are bashing me badly 😂 have a good day to you ❤️😊🙏
As a driver bro I would never think of calling 911 but now I’ll definitely be having it on my mind .. Chicago city is a crazy experience with truck man , salute to you my brother
I never done it but that moment I have to bro better than messing up. Thanks for watching man
Helpful piece of advice from a driver in the northeast. Approaching city corners or tight spots take control of the space you need before getting to it. They’ll honk and scream but you’re bigger, they always wait. Lol. You did a good job. Bet you slept well that night! lol. Stay safe.
Dude it blows my mind there sending semi’s down there at the mart. It’s obviously meant for box trucks at the most. I mean it’s hard for a 26ft box truck I couldn’t imagine trying to get a semi down there. Big props for getting it done. All that work for a pallet or two. Not worth all that stress and mess. Gives me a great business idea though as a box truck driver to be a middle man to avoid semi trucks from having to do crap like that.
You’re correct bro. It’s is so hard for a big semi like mine to come to downtown Chicago. All the streets are too tight for turns, and the place is too confusing to find. They don't have a direct number to call for instructions. I managed to get to the right location, but the docks are under the tunnel. So yeah, downtown Chicago is only meant for box trucks or smaller trucks for local deliveries
@@TruckingwithJake As a chicago native, yeah it's confusing haha.
I work construction, and not even I know where the hell i'm going when someone tells me to park on the "lower" part of an area.
@@DrCranberry Haha. See, can you imagine a first-timer like myself in a semi-truck delivering downtown? Lol. People here are bashing me for not making the best decisions, saying that I should do this and that. They just don't know the actual situation. I planned my trip well and arrived at the exact building address, except that the dock is under the building and there are no signs or instructions on how to get there through the tunnel. That's why I'm stuck lol 😂.
They should have a big facility at each of the freeways into downtown where the big semis can get broken into smaller either box trucks or 25 ft semi trailers
Great job driver, never back down from asking for help.
You are amazing! So responsible, courageous and skillful.
Thank you ❤️😊🙏
We here in Chicago help everyone. If you don’t like to bad so sad. We got your back. It’s what we do.
Love Chicago and its people!! Even high and drunk people in Chicago are nice in my limited experience.
Hey Jake, incredible video. I watch it primarily because I am interested in law enforcement and I really liked how the officers amended the situation. I also like how you interact with the community. How did you capture this footage? You may consider putting equipment or affiliates in the description!
Hi friend thanks for commenting. Appreciate your time watching my video. I’m using go pro max 360. I got from Best Buy 😊❤️
dang?, govee stress kist watching how hard that was, haha! great job!!
Haha thanks ☺️
I’m from Chicago and let me tell you man everyone avoids driving in downtown it’s hectic
CDL schools should make this video mandatory viewing!! AWESOME COMPOSURE AND DRIVING !!
I agree so they’ll see the reality in trucking
I was sweating watching this video...how you remained SO CALM is remarkable!! GIANT PROPS to your backing up skills !!@@TruckingwithJake
Dude, I got the the bubble guts just watching this! I would have been needing to take a nervous shit the whole time! You should be proud of yourself, with calling for help, and even then, you STILL had to do so many tricky manuevers, while staying cool as a cucumber. Awesome that everyone was so understanding and helpful. Yeah, they should maybe have smaller trucks deliver stuff down there in a couple more trips. But dispatch gonna dispatch, I guess! Is it weird that I was still half expecting you to make some pork chops and rice after all of that? Lol. I hope you got to choll out after that. People need to watch and know, so they can empathize when they see truck drivers! Subscribed man! Thanks for all that you do!
Hey bro! I appreciate your time typing and giving your opinion. I am feeling great when people don’t judge me as a trucker of being called dumb because I called a police. I see that you watch the video and understand before judging. Love back to you brother ! ❤️😊🤛🏻
You got balls of steel bro. Cheers to you!
Much appreciated bro for appreciating me 😊❤️🤛🏻🙏
You're lucky you didn't get a ticket. Downtown Chicago semi trucks are prohibited from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. I learned that when I was a truck driver.
I honestly don’t know about the rules. Thanks for telling me this. Dispatch never said anything about it. If it’s prohibited why I see trucks delivering at the mart during this time. But it’s good to know 😊🙏
Wow! You are amazing!
Wow, thank you!😊 ❤️❤️❤️

You are doing such a great job downtown Chicago . I have been there, it was one of the scariest drives of my life in my big truck. You. stayed away from the bridges, they are all low .you did the right thing calling the police.they can help you out in this situation .if they don't get shitty and start to abuse you.😮 tell your boss that you will quite if he/she ever sends you to Chicago again. ❤

That would of been my first and LAST time delivering to Chicago!
Oh yeah this was the last ain’t coming here anymore 😊🤣
You need to be over to the left when making the right turn to get it. Not sure how Americans are with this but in the UK most people understand when they see a lorry over to the right making a left turn that they hold back.
when driving a large vehicle dont be afraid to take lanes before your turn be assertive
Thank you ❤️❤️😞
At least they where nice and helpful to you and not prices. You done a great job with that situation 👏👍👏
Yes, thank you brother 😊🙏
I'm getting my cdl in a few months and this video just opened up my eyes to know it won't be easy
Good luck bro. Getting your cdl. Always remember that trucking isn’t competition. Just do the right thing. Isn’t easy but you’ll like it.
For future reference, you should look up the local police non-emergency line.
Thank you for your opinion
It doesn’t matter. It all goes to the same dispatch center. All you do is call 911 and say it’s non-emergency.
@@truthteller4442 there are select dispatchers in that center that take only 911 or non-emergency calls... Why would the city themselves say that and have a non-emergency line to call?
@@truthteller4442 obviously they use the same dispatch center. They have specific callers that handle 911 or non- emergency calls only... Why else would the city themselves say not to use 911 lines if not an emergency?
I drive locally and that includes Chicago. Luckily I only have to drive stake beds and box trucks, so its not as complicated, but it isn't that easy to navigate those streets a lot of the time! Props to you sir!
Thanks sir. 😊 it wasn’t easy but I got out ok.
You always take the safe way. The slowest then becomes the quickest way bc its the safest way.
I always let truckers change lanes / maneuver / do what they need to in the city. It’s gotta be insanely difficult and I got mad respect for them.

I truly salute all the Truck drivers that have to make their deliveries downtown. Whenever I see them, I immediately get out of y'all's way lol Chicago is hard enough to navigate lmao from the weird random dead-ends, to the distracted unexperienced drivers, to the random narrow roads that seemingly expand out of nowhere, down to the occasional signal losses moving in between the buildings lol you have enough on your plate I don't wanna add to that scratch. and DONT even get me started on the whole Wacker Dr. conundrum thats a novel of its OWN keep on truckin man

One last tip bro, as a Chicago native all 24 years of my life. When it comes to Chicago traffic and streets don’t be afraid to get over or use your weight to your advantage lmao. The average Chicagoan especially downtown is a complete asshole on the road being nice and timid will lead to folks bullying you out the way don’t be afraid to swang that big mf over and use your horn aggressively 😂😂 trust being shy on Chicago roads and you’ll be sitting on the shoulder waiting forever lmao remember you got a good 30-40 tons to work with they only have about 1-2 trust me you get over or blip that airhorn they’ll move or wait 💪🏽 🤜🏻🤛🏽
@BabyWavv haha 🤣 from someone who lived in Chicago for many years.ill take this advise. Thanks bro! 😊🤛🏻🙏😃
Shocked they even had cars available to send
I'm shocked too, for actual crimes they might show up 3 hours later, look around for 5 seconds and drive off. They came right away to help.
You are so respectful to police I love it! Hello from Peru, and I like your accent, is nice. What country you were born? Thanks! Love from Peru.
Yes and yes thanks so much ❤️ I am born and raised in Philippines ❤️❤️🇵🇭
@@TruckingwithJake salamat po for reply :)
This is why Merchandise Mart used to be served by the railroad. And in all honesty it still should be. That entire area during rush hour is literally gridlock traffic, as a truck driver you would have to wait until all that traffic subsides, which could take hours. With a train, that wouldn't be the case. There is still technically a track to that area, but it hasn't been used in over 20 years east of the river.
Yeah man. That was quite a situation. Good job though. 😅
dood you still got a lot to learn......best of luck
This is where & how you learn bro
Every trucker should refuse to deliver to Chicago. Nothing good comes out of Chicago anyway 🤷
Good point🙏😊
fuck that bro, i used to drive an e series cutaway ambulance downtown and i thought that was a pain. got skills bro i wouldn’t be driving a semi with a full trailer downtown
Haha. Hey bro thanks for your time! I know it was stressful day. It was my first time delivering in downtown.
A dock in a shit whole like that should be straight truck only
Tough position! Also i think you might have gotten the only nice cops in chicago!
That also! I’m lucky Cops are nice
Watched the whole thing . Did the smart thing called for help . I work in an electrical plant one thing those truck drivers always say they would never go to New York or Chicago. Good job kuya 💪🏽
Hey my brother! Thanks for watching. Yeah bro Chicago and New York are the worst place to bring the load to deliver. Nobody wants to be here. But I get to experience it 😀😉
Bless up good work
I hate every time I have to take tractor trailer to Chicago
Thank you 😊
City law = no 18 wheelers in downtown. Your dispatcher screwed you.
I avoid Chicago at all cost, driving for myself I have that ability. When I did deliveries to Chicago working for a company, I always made sure I'll fit height wise or width wise. When I was unsure, I threw my 4 ways on, got out and looked. F*ck them people that honk at you, they're not the ones driving the truck and they are not responsible if anything happens to my equipment. They want stuff in store, they have to be delivered by the truck. You handled it very good by calling 911 but for the future, when you see signs "no trucks", don't go down that route. Stop, 4 ways on, get out and look around, if can get ahold of anyone, ask how to get to where you're going. It'll save you a lot of headache in the future! ;)
Thanks for watching sir. Also , how you address everything. What could’ve done. Appreciate it 😊
You handled that very well my man. I would have done the same
Thanks for addressing that buddy. It’s the right thing to do. 😊
this hole video gave me anxiety
i thought backing up was crazy then they gave you the hard right after. lmao
It’s not as easy in the situation like this lol
Welcome to my world....I P&D Downtown Chicago everyday....it's not as bad as it used to be before covid. Traffic is not has heavy.
Have you ever had to go in the elevator on state and monroe? and then down the turntable?
If you know you know.
I also had to do William Sonoma on rush street
900 North Michigan
But you pull it on rush and you drive down a tunnel and if you have anything bigger than a 40 foot trailer you'll never make it down the tunnel....
That's P&D times hell..
City driving is the reason I didn't become a truck driver, I love being on the road and always show as much respect to 18 wheelers because they carry the shit I want around and keep this country going.
Thanks brother for your appreciation to us. It’s really tough here on the road. Seeing a comment like this is awesome that we are appreciated 😊❤️🙏😊
If you ever get into a bind like this, stop and call the police like he did. Police won’t ticket you, unless you do something like cross a restricted bridge or something. They’ll tell you, they’d rather inconvenience people than have to get bridges inspected for damage you can cause. And you better believe if you cause structural damage, it’s you who pays the bill. Never ever use google maps, when in a bind just set your brakes and make the call, that’s what they want you to do
That was intense…I bet you’ll never take a load there again, goodness!
This is the last I will never haha 😆
If there is a way to just perform the maneuver, even if we hold people up we should do it, if we are delivery drivers because our task is just temporary.
I remember some deliveries taking me 15 minutes, that could have been like 2 because I was being so polite to other drivers.
I retired from this kind of trucking over 40 years ago………….I’ve never been so glad……..
I can’t blame you 😊
I play american truck simulator on my computer with all sorts of mods and I understand 100% of how stressful it would be to park in a rough spot. They just need to add more trickier situations, that way it makes the experience more realistic.
I'm 3 months late watching this but always use lower Wacker Dr. That's where all the docks are located downtown Chicago
