  • Today we will be driving in Hyde Park a south side community 7 miles south from Chicago Loop by South Shores of Lake Michigan. Hyde Park is surrounded by Washington Park on the west Kenwood on the north, Jackson Park in the southeast and Woodlawn in the southwest.
    Hyde Park is home to very prestigious school: The University of Chicago which now is associated with eighty-nine Nobel Prize laureates. Hyde Park / Kenwood is also home to former President Barack O Bama's residence 5046 S Greenwood Ave. He was a Senior Lecturer at U of C for twelve years and this is where he started his political career who eventually went to serve two terms presidency.
    Apart from University of Chicago, Hyde Park is also home to the Museum of Science and Industry, and two of Chicago's four historic sites listed in the original 1966 National Register of Historic Places (Chicago Pile-1, the world's first artificial nuclear reactor, and Robie House).

    Left Chicago in 1960 for Los Angeles. I am very nostalgic about Hyde Park. Chicago is still my home town

    Excellent footage, Hyde Park is the most under-rated neighborhood in the city and maybe country for what it offers. The in-tact urbanity here and classic architecture mixed with experimental modernism is rare for any Chicago neighborhood on this scale. It rivals any North Side neighborhood but the suburban strip malls have to go. Hyde Park should be the model for rebuilding Woodlawn, Englewood and Bronzeville etc. Can you please make a tour of Fulton Market? That is another gem with an insane transformation.

      Very true the rest of the south & West Side could follow this model...

      @@boop8127where the hell you get that from. There's nothing happening around the U of C or the immediate area around it. GTFOH Now keep on going through Washington Park and come out on King Drive, you're on your own

    I grew in Hyde Park from 1972 to 1980 and trust me, Hyde Park has changed. Today it resembles the failings of the rest of the City of Chicago. It's just another PIT of Chicago neighborhoods. Glad I left.

    Around 1:20 you approached the Shoreland Hotel, where as a business school student at the U of C I lived for two years. It was during the Arab oil embargo, so they dropped the thermostats real low. My second winter there, in 1977, the the temp stayed before freezing from before Christmas through the second week in February. Everything was frozen solid.

    It was always considered super-cool to live in Hyde Park and I rented my very first apartment there many, many years ago on 51st and University. It was the size of a closet but it was all mine and I loved it.

    Left Chicago in 1961 to join Navy, and still consider Hyde Park my neighborhood except for the winters. Suggestion: flash cross streets every 4 blocks or so. Drive a little slower and have the camera pan an arc of 80°. The 'hood has changed since Kennedy was president, but still has the same vibe since I visited in 2013. Do Pullman next; lot of history there. Thanks for the drive.

    Only if Lake Michigan was just further east, there would be east side of Chicago that resemble the northside of Chicago

    Why there are no pedestrians at sidewalks??? Even many years ago, when I watch videos from Chicago neighborhoods I ‘ve never seen people! What’s wrong with this city???

    • @stitch6157

    • @loopes84
      @loopes84 Před 4 lety +2

      Stitch as I’ve already mentioned, even two or three years ago there were no people in the streets. I think possibly the high rate of crime and violence are the reasons that people avoid walking in the sidewalks.

    • @stitch6157
      @stitch6157 Před 4 lety +7

      @@loopes84 If you are talking about Hyde Park it doesn't have a high rate of crime. The 53rd St. corridor has plenty of pedestrians and farmers markets as well as other events at Harper Ct. during normal times. The university has been sinking a lot of money into rebuilding the Hyde Park/Woodlawn area so the neighborhood is still transforming. Clark/Diversey in Linoln Park, Clybourn Corridor, Wicker Park and Wrigleyville/Lakeview all have vibrant pedestrian traffic for outer neighborhoods and when they are busy they have a Brooklyn feel. Unless you are on a major commercial corridor you don't see foot-traffic like New York has in the outer borroughs. One problem is Chicago is still way too over-reliant on cars with high parking minimums forced on developments and restrictive zoning keeps TOD projects from achieving hyper-density so driving is still king. The city isn't investing in transit, bannning parking podiums or discouraging driving.

      There are people walking on sidewalks all the time. What part of Chicago have you been looking at?? I live downtown where Michigan Ave is always packed as well as River North, Streeterville, Gold Coast, West Loop, Lincoln Park, I can go on. People are always out walking in fact, a lot ppl walk and take public transportation rather than driving. Every city has bad neighborhoods with bad crime. It’s so ignorant for people to think Chicago is bad all over. It’s like any other city that has bad areas. Try visiting.

    • @loopes84
      @loopes84 Před 4 lety +2

      Marisa Harris I’ve been looking at Lincoln park, Gold coast, Hyde park, Streeterville, Uptown and I see very few people or sometimes nobody!! It’s probably the time they record the video, I don’t know......

    In Chicago, where ever you see sky scrapers buildings, you will see Caucasians. That may not be true because you don't see Caucasians at Prarie Shores large apartment complex in Bronzeville on Chicago's Southside. And those are skyscraper apartment complexes.

    Just ran across these videos and am loving it! The drive through Hyde Park brought back soooo many memories. At 8 35 is the building I grew up in and further up the street is my high school Kenwood Academy on Lake Park. Wish you could have went up 53rd where in my era everybody hung cause it used to be a McDonald's across from that park, I forget the name of it. From the 70's to the early 80's, that was me! Thanks for the videos whoever you are.👍🏿

    This driver does not respect stop signs and traffic lights. He ran a few lights and many times did "rolling stops" at stop signs. Great video though.
