  • We're at a stalemate. Hildebolt has claimed half of the map, as we have claimed half of the map. And since the only way to win the game is complete domination, it's time to prepare to take Hildebolt down. To do this, we are going to need at least 8,000 influence to claim his lands, and an army big enough to beat him. However, getting influence has become quite difficult as of late.
    Because all of the lands have been claimed on the map, we're not seeing any new bandit camps - the most lucrative way to earn influence. So to resolve this, we're going to tithe food for influence. But that means that we're going to have to have food to tithe - something we've struggled with. But today, we're going to take steps to solve that once and for all
    So in this episode, we're going to found a brand farming village in a brand new region. But farms require a ton of workers, so we'll have to stabilize the village before we begin farming. We'll use the Pack Station for the first time and begin inter-regional trade. And by the end, we'll be ready to build huge farms all over the new region. Enjoy!

    I think it could be really cool if once you are done with this manor lord series, you can "import" it into CS1. You can copy the road network, the positions of the markets, churches, and important buildings, and use Waldbrand as a European "old town" which you can expand into a modern city. You will probably need access to mods like move it, and also good European assets.

    Hey man! Veteran Total War player here. Your Retinue is your elite. Do not put them in front! That's the job of your light infantry, to hold the enemy into place, and then after they're pinned, you can get your mercenaries around to get them from behind. You're making your best, heaviest and most expensive soldiers do the heavy lifting when that should be relegated to non-professional soldiers!

      While that can be a strategy, it is not standard to have light troops hold the center of your line. You risk the center of your line breaking and your forces just melting away. You do want your most elite to hold the most important part of your line. Plus lighter troops are faster and can get to the flanks faster. Just do hammer and anvil tactics and you won't fail unless severely outnumbered.

      @@CityPlannerPlays It's honestly easier, and better, to just create one line using your various melee troops, with your Retinue centered behind the front line. You can either keep your bows behind the main line to pepper the enemy as they approach or place them in front to bait them in and then move them behind the main line right before it's too late. Also, don't run your troops if you can help it. During your first battle during the video, your Retinue troops were exhausted and ineffective. They're heavy infantry so they tire the fastest. TLDR, one main line 3-4 rows deep of regular troops, Retinue (heavy infantry) centered behind the main line, and archers behind everyone else. Retinue smashes into the center once everyone is engaged in combat (or wherever help is needed). One more tip, once your troops are engaged in combat, move any extra troops who are not engaged in combat into the sides of the enemy. This will work as a flanking maneuver.

  • @ducksi1

    I'd really recommend making "triangular" junctions instead of T-intersections. That's what most forks looked like back then, as roads were mostly just desired paths and not masterplanned or gridded cities. Not only does this look more realistic, but it could help horses and oxen get around a little faster! I'd just recommend doing this at 90° forks, but skipping it in just the most dense parts of your settlements :)

    • @statelyelms
      @statelyelms Před 16 dny +8

      Additionally, fewer straight lines! Like you said, there's little to no planning, it's just desire paths, and in this age of foot and cart travel, people bend to topography. Straight-line paths are pretty uncommon. If a path feels like it should be straight, keep an eye on the topography. If there's a tree it might go around it, if there's a boulder it might divert, if a puddle forms people will make a new path around it.. go wild with the person-scale, because that's all there really is at this time.

      @@CityPlannerPlays I find what works best for farming is to have 3 plots for 1 crop on a crop rotation of grain, fallow, fallow and then switch it up per plot so you have a crop every season. The 2 fallow seasons will help bring the fertility back up.

    • @dftp
      @dftp Před 15 dny +6

      @@CityPlannerPlaysI've tested this. It doesn't increase over max fertility actually, it just restores fertility quicker than monoculture or constant crop rotation. Though I found so far that rotating different crops, e.g. going wheat then barley then flax then wheat again, is fast enough for restoring fertility to max for the next rotation on a field so that you don't waste a season on an empty field.

    Protip for everyone starting a fresh town. Build your first barrage plot gigantic, I'm talking big enough to fit 6 or 7 individual homes, then reduce it to one home, rotate for maximum back yard space, and give it a vegetable garden. 1 garden will feed your entire village and the people living there will still be able to have another job. Add a living space extension for even better veg yields.

    @Princejonn Před 17 dny +22

    Loving this new series, Phil. You definitely helped me make up my mind to purchase the game.
    Couple of things I see that can make your experience better:
    Vegetable Garden extensions have yield directly correlated to plot size. So make them big for those extensions. Chickens and goats are not affected by size.
    At ~29m when you placed a hunting cabin you placed it too close. You can see how the red ring became more red. You’ll scare the animals away further with this.
    A tip I picked up from another creator: Make multiple small farms instead of one big. That way you are guaranteed to yield at least some crops. Because if they can’t finish a large field the entire field is discarded. Even if you’re 99% finished. So 10 small fields would at least give you 90% instead of 0% ❤
    Keep up the wonderful work! 🙌

    just a little tip with the tannery: tannery workers will often grab hides from the storage building and that can be a long journey since lots of players like to place tannery away from residentials. to add to this problem tannery workers only carry one hide at a time, making this supply chain very time and distance gated. to prevent this you can go into the advanced tab of your storage warehouse and deselect hides. with no warehouse workers picking up the hides, the tannery will source them from the hunters camp (and then warehouse workers will pick up the leather).
    im not sure what happens to existing hides in the storage warehouse when this happens though.
    Edit: Also, this will probably screw up goat hides so - i dunno.

    • @kinagrill

    Loving the series so far, some hopefully useful tips:
    Retinue units are heavily armoured - avoid making them run, same with most of the shield carrying units. Your units are heavily fatigued and their efficiency drops
    Brigand type mercs are perfect for bait manoeuvres and can then be re-positioned to flank or chase off enemy archers. I always leave 1 melee unit kinda 'free' to intercept anyone getting to my archers as well (and move the archers so they can fire without your troops being in line of fire). You can also hide in tree lines and enemy units seem less reactive to you, which is very useful.
    For food, ensuring every burgages plot has something; chickens for small and then large plots that can have extensions have Veg. Veg yields also scale with plot size; some of yours are tiny and sort of wasted.

    One really important thing with vegetable gardens is it's not enough to just have room for a backyard extension, the size of the plot effects how many vegetables you're going to get out of it. So if you want more efficient, higher yielding vegetable gardens make the plot size a lot longer. Same thing with Orchards.

    Another excellent video, thank you!
    I have some minor tips regarding the gameplay, I hope it helps. The notification that generic storage is full doesn't necessarily mean you need another storehouse. It only means that in one of your buildings, the generic storage is full. Click on the notification to see which building. For example, I always get the same for my saw pit, because it can only hold one timber. Don't build another storehouse if the previous one is not full... try to allocate more workers to it instead.
    Regarding the battles, I would suggest you follow the most basic tactic of medieval times, which is to have a frontline. Get your melee militia units, put them in a line formation facing the enemy, and put your archers and retinue behind them. Wait for the enemy to engage your frontline first, and only then move your support units: move them around the flanks to shoot the enemy with your archers in the side (don't let them shoot from behind your frontline, friendly fire is not funny), and charge the enemy in the back with your retinue.
    Btw, the main use of archers in medieval times was to skirmish with them (move them in front of the frontline to shoot), but that only applies if the enemy has ranged units to skirmish with. In this game, if the enemy only has melee units, skirmishing doesn't really worth it, because you can only shoot one or two volleys before you have to move them behind the frontline.

    Hey Phil! I can't tell if this is something you're already doing, but something I recently learned while playing is you can squeeze out a few more residences for families by reducing the count of burgage plots. You can play a little min/max game where each burgage plot can have an additional family, and most times, this will allow more families to live in the same area. Also, this will reduce the upfront cost of the burgage plots because you can go back later and add the expansion in for the second family.

    You referred to having a manor house in each region. In Europe, a manor is actually an area of land which were parcelled out by the aristocracy and leased to worthy individuals for their service. These were minor lords such as Barons and not part of the higher aristocracy. Each region of the map in Manor Lords correspondents to one manor. Each manor has its own Manor House, and one Lord can own several manors. A manor house can be fortified, but it is not strictly a castle.

    Lord Philip Duke of Waldbrand first of his name. Granted title by King Fredrick III for his efforts in city planning. Made Marshal of the Kings armies for his prowess on the field of battle. May the Duke of Waldbrands descendants hold this name in high honor and continue his legacy expanding kingdoms into the future.

    Hey just thought I'd comment about a couple issues I ran into with the game that it seems you did to. With the pack mule not assigning, apparently if you try to assign livestock before you actually have it, that spinning icon will show making you think it will automatically fill in but it doesn't. All you need to do is unassign the livestock and then reassign and it'll fix it. Then, with the chicken coops, both the chicken and the goats are passive and don't require anyone to work the farm. I've actually prebuilt homes and built chicken coops and generated eggs from it with no residents there the whole time. Only the vegetable garden requires labor from the residents, so I try to make sure I only have people that have downtime in their normal jobs (like farmers) have vegetable gardens.

    The generic storage full indicator is likely caused by a bug with the saw pit. Every time a log is delivered it causes the warning. You can actualy click the notification and see where the issue is.

    your archers need to be set up at distance, always. use the range ring exclusively to place them. they aren't hand-to-hand, as you know. basically, you must have hand-to-hand in front of them for protection. they can't be moved around by themselves

    Hey Phil! I noticed at 24:00 that you never selected a bartering partner for the second pack station in Waldbrand, so that might be why there weren't any clothing stalls at the marketplace until the tannery was built.

    "Generic storage full" is a bug with the sawpit. At least that's one reason it triggers. The moment the log is taken into the sawpit to be cut into planks it fills up the 1/1 slot in the sawpit. That triggers the notification. Click the notification and it will take you to the building that is triggering the notification.

    Not sure if this has been mentioned already but that 'Generic Storage Full' is sometimes spammed by the planks workshop from what I've seen. You'll notice that it can only hold 1 lumber in it's "Generic Storage" spot, so when it gets that lumber in to turn it into planks, it trips the 'storage full' message. If you click on the actual icon for the storage full it'll take you to the planks workshop.

    for the main village, you can reconsider the trading system little more. instead of importing charcoal, import firewood and then make more kiln, then import flax instead of importing linen, same for yarn and wool. you can just import wheat, and then just keep 1 family to make flour. in that way your import cost will be a lot less, and will be able to produce a lot of processed goods. import raw materials and then create the supply chains, then keep some of them and sell some of them

    That second warband, they were not trying to hide in the forest. They went after your retinue. There really doesn't seem to be a way to hid units in this game as of yet. The AI assigns a value to each type of unit and whatever unit has the highest value, they attack. From what I have seen it is retinue, then archers, then the rest of the militia. So if your retinue is up front like in this battle, the AI will rush at it. IF the Archers are exposed, they will rush them.

  • @TheTaxxor
    @TheTaxxor Před 17 dny +1

    That "generic storage full" doesn't refer to a storehouse but to the internal generic storage of a specific building. If you clock on that message, the game will jump to the building. I constantly have that message whenever my sawpit brings in timber because it has 1 slot available for it. Then I immediately get the message that the generic storage is full.
