- After years of increasingly cartoonish shenanigans, producers Albert Broccoli and Michael Wilson got back to 007’s no-nonsense roots with this 1987 entry directed by John Glen. Timothy Dalton makes the first of two appearances as a dour but no-less daring Bond and the plot itself-about a defecting KGB agent-is certainly more reminiscent of Ian Fleming’s Cold War thrillers than Roger Moore’s cornpone adventures with a Deep South sheriff in Live and Let Die.

My favorite James Bond movie, I do think Timothy Dalton was amazing, terribly underrated, he should have had the chance to do a third movie.
Stole the words from my mouth. Completely agree!
umm, he did have a chance. He's the one who left the role because he didn't want to wait for MGM to clear up its legal troubles...
@@Jaydogg222 He quit then he came back. He said he would do Goldeneye under the condition that it would be his last film. Cubby Broccoli said that if he was going to comeback, it wasn't going to be just one film.
My favorite Bond and Bond movie too, which surprised me since I grew up on the Moore Bond movies.
Dana Gould is such a good writer. His podcast is a must listen.
I enjoyed Timothy Dalton's portrayal , a shame he didn't get a 3rd Film.
In 2018, Dalton revealed that he would have done Goldeneye had Albert Broccoli agreed to release him from the role afterwards.
He was awful.
@@tyrport you have no taste
Timothy Dalton bears a striking resemblance to the illustrations of Bond on the covers of those beautiful Pan paperback editions of Ian Fleming's books.
One of my fav James Bond movies!👍👍
I think Dalton is still the best technical actor to have played Bond and I don’t think he was completely devoid of irony. Personally, I really appreciated the hard edge he brought to the role, especially after Roger’s winking, campy (albeit highly entertaining and enjoyable) take on the character. License to Kill I equate with Temple of Doom regarding its tonal shift to dark nastiness - and I love that movie too. Shame we only got two Dalton Bonds in my opinion.
I wish Dalton took over beginning with For Your Eyes Only. He probably would not have done all five of the 1980's but we probably would have seen three or four from him.
I loved Dalton's cold blooded Bond
LICENSE TO KILL is terrific, and not a rip-off of MIAMI VICE. The plot is taken from unused portions of the novel LIVE AND LET DIE.
True but the focus on a Latin American Drug kingpin, casting actors who appeared in Die Hard, Michael Kamen scoring, it's very much a Miami Vice/Lethal Weapon/Die Hard inspired film.
Aka- the entire last 3/4 of the novel! It’s essentially the full book of Live & Let Die
Part of the fun of TFH is occasionally disagreeing with the commentator. This is easily the most I’ve ever disagreed with one. TLD is the most underrated film ever made.
It’s a shame we never got more Dalton films, but because of studio bankruptcy issues, work on the next film was delayed for several years. By the time they were ready to make a new Bond movie, Daltons contract had expired. He was offered the role again and he was willing to do it, but he only wanted to finish it up with one film while Cubby Broccoli wanted him to do at least three more. They both decided it wasn’t going to work and parted ways amicably. In fact, they managed to incorporate a worry from License to Kill into Goldeneye. When it was released in ‘89, many were wondering if this was the death knell of Bond films, did he have a place in our world anymore. This question was amplified by the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union. They obviously hit it out of the park with Brosnan and Goldeneye, but it’s been diminishing returns ever since.
Rambo 3 also looks wild in hindsight . With Rambo fighting alongside the Taliban.
Timothy Dalton was a decent James Bond.
I also remember him as Prince Barin in Flash Gordon.
And he was the Villain in the Rocketeer.
Timothy Dalton bought some seriousness back to the James Bond role after Roger Moore had turned the Character into a Cartoon. It's too bad he only appeared in a couple of films as 007.
Joyless? Grim? Daniel Craig makes Dalton seem like Roger Moore.
they really need to bring back voiceover guys like Don LaFontaine to trailers - its a lost art nowadays :(
Dalton rules.
Great and informed commentary, thank you for the humour, which this trailer needed.
Good movie 💛
I preferred Licence To Kill to this one.
That one has a lot of good moments.
Bonds sniper rifle is a walther in the movie. I found that interesting
Way too snarky on your part..: - |
TLD = Damn Good Flick. One of the best Bonds. Dalton rocks.
Agree with you on License to Kill though. Waaaaay too violent for a Bond. Plays A LITTLE better nowadays, but still leaves a bitter, bloody aftertaste.
It feels so good on my bald lizard head.
You've been misinformed. Timothy Dalton was always their first choice - they only turned to Pierce Brosnan because Dalton had a schedule conflict. Then the Remington Steele fiasco caused a shoot delay and he was available. This 'second choice' myth made the audience (probably yourself included) turned against his Bond. Those 2 performances were at least 25 years ahead of his time. Before Dalton, nobody ever thought of Bond as a flesh and blood character. When Daniel Craig attempted just some of what he did 20 years later, people still called it groundbreaking. That's how insanely far ahead he was.
Exactly. I wish Dalton had taken over earlier ! Specifically, after Moonraker.
Dalton actually resembles the Character that was Described by Ian Fleming more than any other Actor.
The ''Bond. James Bond'' line is thrown away ? He's in a rush / just nearly been killed ! Checkout the Teaser trailer for 'Daylights,' it has an alternate reading of the line. The producers chose one over the other, not Dalton !
The more Dana the better. Keep them coming.
3:41 So excited for the sequel now!
This might be off topic but didn’t dana gould voice gex the gecko?
Gex talking about bond
Would love to see Dr. Z do a TFH!
I thought Timothy Dalton was never given a fair chance at being Bond. I thought he was quite good but the films were somewhat mediocre and needlessly grim. I still a fondness for Roger Moore. I got to see most of them in the theatre back in the 70's and early 80's. They were silly escapist fun that a modern audience would laugh at nowadays. But let's not be too hard on Dalton for a lacklustre performance as he was only following the script and director's orders. I've only seen one Daniel Craig Bond film and didn't care for him at all. He was more dour than Dalton.
^You've Got That Right.
Good change up for bond in the 80's ...just wish they hadn't made him so dry, far too buttoned down
Dalton was portraying Fleming's Bond who was less colorful and more human.
brosnan always played as if he‘s on speed. everything was fast. i‘d rather prefer dalton. top 6 are moore, dalton, craig, connery, lazenby, brosnan
"I think"... Is the very worst way to start a comment.
This is the movie when Bond became boring. For me it all only works as a silly campy spoof, which the vast majority of the preceding Bonds were. All the fun was lost here and in those that came after.
If License to Kill didn’t suck so bad we would have got more Dalton.
He should have been in Goldeneye.
Even though Licence To Kill didn't do well in the US box office, it's not the reason for the long delay between that film and Goldeneye. The issue was the legal rights to the cinematic Bond. Dalton was willing to come back for Goldeneye but he didn't because Albert Broccoli would not agree to let him go after that film.
Nice video
To me Dalton was the worst Bond
He looked a little Bondish in the tuxedo and the sniper rifle at the start but then I didn’t care. There wasn’t much charisma and his approach of being an assassin didn’t work as well as it should. Craig got down the danger element much more than this fella.
