Joe Dante on WRONG IS RIGHT

- Movies set in the near future are sometimes rendered moot by subsequent events, but Richard Brooks' bizarrely prescient political satire makes more sense in a post 9/11 world than it did in 1982. Only nominally based on Charles McCarry's espionage novel "The Better Angels", this adaptation takes a comparatively minor character, newshound Patrick Hale, and inflates him to media hero status worthy of star Sean Connery, heading a large cast of familiar faces.

Sean Connery and Leslie Nielsen together in a Film
Yes
👍👍👍👍👍
How have I never heard of this! Thanks again!
It is now streaming on Amazon Prime! Wanted to see this rear film for years. I watched it last night. Mr. Dante, Thank you for your terrific review.
I loved this film as a college kid back in 1988, but my journalism teacher called it a hokey plot with no truth to it. I wonder what she would think of it now?
I saw this on VHS back in the late 90s and it kind of blew my mind. I'd have to watch it again to refresh myself on details, but it just had a lot of striking human moments that had my mouth agape. A very spirited and kinetic film to be sure!
I saw The Man with Deadly Lens as a VHS recording off a British TV, that was back in 1992. I found it interesting then, I will watch it again to see how much it reflects what eventually happened in reality.
This needs to be programmed with "Deal of the Century" and "Best Defense". Collectively, they write an essay in different flavors of 1980s cynicism.
My FAVORITE Sean Connery movie! It disappeared in 7 days. I was so glad I decided to see it when I did... instead of "CONAN THE BARBARIAN" (which came out the same weekend).
Henry Kujawa 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
The movie was fucking prophetic!
KNown in the UK as The Man With the Deadly Lens
"A bit of a mess," yes, but also unsettlingly prophetic in many way, and really funny at times too. Plus a fantastic cast, led by one of Hollywood's greatest all-time movie stars. It's like "Dr. Strangelove" + "Network," and while not as good as either, it gets credit for at least trying to be.
Watched in when it had been released first and loved it, especially the ending. Creepy entertaining and an excellent cast!!!
it's on netflix, i'll check it out!
"Homicide bomber"? damn, that's actually a correct term. FOX nailed it. Thanks for updating, Joe.
this review is from 2012, but now you can even look back at the film at the parts they talk about how everyone wants to be on TV , but now its everyone wants to be noticed on their twitter and tiktok live streams.
I just watched this movie because I'm a fan of Jennifer Jason Leigh. she's only in it for a minute near the beginning but like a lot of the films she's in it turned out to be surprisingly INTERESTING,
Director Richard Brooks also directed "Blackboard Jungle" (1955) which starred JJL's dad Vic Morrow…maybe she got a little part because of this connection
Anyway I didn't expect this to be a good movie but it really was odd and strangely prophetic. Thanks JJL!! I was looking for you but found a really good movie!!!
FairDealDan Yeah-huge JJL fan here as well. Nope-she’s not in it much-but she IS awesome in her allotted screen time!
I'd love to see the whole movie again, after 2 viewings when it came out and on TV in the 90ies. Anyone could upload it entirely? Please. 🙂👍👏
My feeling about this movie is that a lot of it is indeed startlingly prescient (especially the whole World Trade Center thing), but it doesn’t really work as entertainment. Sean Connery is my favorite actor, but he felt miscast in this, and Brooks wrote and directed so many better films. But I would’ve liked to attend that double bill with Second Civil War at the New Beverly!
Joe Dante great filmmaker
I just had to give you a yes vote in case Joe should drop by. I mean, a year with no response might be discouraging for him.
Affirmative!!!
Tom Hall 😆😆
Regardless of Dante's political views, you _REALLY_ need to see this. I would disagree with Joe in that this _is_ as good as ELMER GANTRY and BLACKBOARD JUNGLE. Think of this as a slightly more subtle Monty Python film on politics.
And Connery's speech near the end is fantastic!
Genial movie!
when the hell is this film gonna be on bluray come on its a sean connery movie get with it colunbia the dvd looks like shit on my hd tv
Leslie Nielson channeling Trump there
I enjoy Dante’s movies in general - even if he should be a bit more restrained - but when he starts waxing politics… Doesn’t he realize that there are NO good guys in Washington? Stop being such a naive child Dante.
Mallory is Trump.
Trump is Mallory.
Think of that before you vote.

Did you know president George W. Bush, took his idea to go to war with Irak with this movie?
Yes! he did!
Watch this movie and think about it!!!!
meh no thanks
Dante, come on... it's a piece of shit.
Also, consider TfH's tendency to casually smear half its potential audience as racist/sexist/homophobic. Previously, only Josh Olson did it much. It's really sad that such a likeable man as Joe Dante is now doing it.
