@@YOURmom-zv8be It doesn't say the words "freedom of religion", either. The great thing though is we know that separation of church and state is exactly what is spelled out in the 1st amendment because we have the words of the who actually wrote it stating that themselves. They knew you cannot have freedom of religion (or any freedom really) without keeping religion (and especially Christianity) out of government. The prior 1500+ years of oppressive Christian nations proved that pretty clearly. Which is what James Madison (aka The Father of The Constition) once stated in a memo: "Strongly guarded as is the separation between religion and & Gov't in the Constitution of the United States the danger of encroachment by Ecclesiastical Bodies, may be illustrated by precedents already furnished in their short history" Madison also clarified that the separation of church and state outlined in the constitution was TOTAL: "The civil Government, though bereft of everything like an associated hierarchy, possesses the requisite stability, and performs its functions with complete success, whilst the number, the industry, and the morality of the priesthood, and the devotion of the people, have been manifestly increased by the TOTAL SEPARATION OF THE CHURCH FROM THE STATE" -James Madison

See that's the problem today. For them being a patriot means that you worship a flag, a song and a false idol in Washington but that's all it needs to them. They Don't Love everybody, they don't look for justice for everyone. And if you took up a handful of dirt and put it in their hands and say that the love of this, this dirt from the country you love is Real patriotism they'd have no idea what you were talking about because to them it's flag song false idol flag song false idol ad nauseam. And all because he hates the same people they hate
Ya know, I suppose it MAY be in conflict with the First Amendement, but I'm not sure it IS. Allow me to think 'out loud,' to further discussion. The 1st Amendment begins, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free excercise thereof..." so my question is, does the argument that there is a conflict rest on the premise that the phrase "under God" respects an establishment of religion? What do we make of the phrase, "Congress shall enact no law"? I could totally be persuaded here.........present solid textual analysis, or make a persuasive argument. ;) [By the way, I'm not monotheistic, so I have no 'horse in this race,' as they say.]
The sky just cleared, a rainbow is shining, and a choir of Angel's is singing. Why? Someone just spoke truth on social media. That's not just a thought you shared, Beau. That is a fact.
“Indivisible” I scratch my head when I hear that word. People still recite that word but yet we are divided. If the pledge were a mission statement we would be failing.
Does it strike you as at all odd that they chose that particular point where it says "one nation indivisible" to insert "under God?" The act divides the phrase by ramming a God into the issue.
Fear of the other is a natural part of the human animal, it used to be small tribes knocking the shit out of each other then they formed alliances against a different other and on and on. @@chezmoi42 , Trump exhorting his supporters to chant "lock her up" is classic psychological projection; being locked up is the thing he both most fears and most deserves.
When I was in Law School, I got ready for a fight over Texas v. Johnson (the case that said flag burning is protected under the 1st Amendment). My main argument was "you burn a flag, you burn a piece of cloth. You ban burning the flag, and you destroy the very values it stands for. One of these is replaceable. The other is not. One of these disrespects the flag. The other makes it worthless." (There was more to it, but it would basically be citing a bunch of other cases we had to read in support of this). Hilariously enough, the entire right wing division of that class stayed silent other then a stupid, token "if you burn the flag, you're against democracy" that was barely worth a single line in response, much to the surprise of the professor and a few people who apparently wanted to see me take down the right wing of the class.
"The Pledge was supposed to be quick and to the point. Bellamy designed it to be recited in 15 seconds. As a socialist, he had initially also considered using the words equality and fraternity but decided against it, knowing that the state superintendents of education on his committee were against equality for women and African Americans." (Wikipedia: Pledge of Allegiance:Origins:Bellamy pledge)
Which is totally illogical, considering the USA was founded as a secular nation to begin with laws based on non-religious principles. Not to mention the earliest Christian church practiced communism. No, it was added because theocratic Christians saw a ripe opportunity to foist their god on the rest of the country.

Cheri Ann real patriots criticise the wrongs they see in government & point out inequality. It is the first step to improving them. Only fakes claiming to be patriots would denounce & attack those that would advance the cause of liberty & equality .
I think anyone that is actually patriotic would uphold the ideals of liberty and justice for all because that is what the true spirit of America. We are 'a more perfect Union' which implies we are not done creating 'the perfect Union' and leaves room for that revision. We must all strive to create a better place for everyone and anyone that stands against that cause CANNOT love America, the Constitution, liberty or justice and is therefore a fake patriot. Anyone that tries to deprive anyone else of those fundamentally American ideals of justice and/or liberty is NOT an American patriot, it's that simple.
@@JakeMcNaughton I like to tell pledge fanatics that my father didn't say the pledge when he was in school because no one in Ohio did at that time. It's *not* a tradition the founding fathers started after writing the constitution. While the pledge was first written in 1892, and I think the boy scouts started picking it up along the way, it wasn't really used in public schools until WWII and only really took off during the cold war and the addition of "under god." People were plenty patriotic before being forced to do a pledge and salute every morning in school.
@@BeauoftheFifthColumn I was raised to focus on the Idea, the flag only got in the way during my military career. Great message either way , I always appreciate Knowledge.
It all needs to stop. Back in my day we weren't taught to worship a flag or a song or the president. We were taught to respect them but not worship them. And all those idiots out there were never taught flag etiquette or maybe they just tuned their minds out. If people from the 1950s the 1960s maybe even the 1970s could come forward in time and see how the flag was being treated disrespectfully they'd be shocked and they probably wouldn't have any children
Flag etiquette. It should be raised in the morning as soon as the sun comes up and taken down in the evening as the sun is going down. It must never touch the ground and it should be properly folded in a tri-fold which is just like what you see soldiers giving War widows. It should never fly in the rain. And a torn or ragged flag should be replaced immediately. If an important person dies it should be flown at half mast. This was not flag worship this was flag respect. Today's flag worshippers don't care how much the damn thing is torn up they let it stay out all night come rain or sleet or snow and yet they're screaming about what great Patriots they are. What they actually are is totally disrespecting this country and what it really stands for. Thank you Beau, you got me thinking about this whole thing on a much deeper level!
Let's talk about the Pledge of Allegiance... TRANSCRIPT “Well, howdy there, Internet people. It’s Beau again. So tonight, we're gonna talk about the Pledge. We're gonna do this because Carrie posted something. Carrie was my editor in an outlet I used to write for. Now she does stuff for this channel. She posted something and it got me thinking. So, I went back and looked and sure enough. It's true. The Pledge of Allegiance has gone through several revisions over the years. It started out in 1892. “I pledge allegiance to my flag and the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” Then an early revision, 1892-1923. “I pledge allegiance to my flag, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” 1923-19, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. “ 1924-1954, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” 1954- Current version: “I pledge allegiance to the flag, of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” The fact that this was inspired by an editor is just happy coincidence in some ways. As a journalist, when you're writing, you have to be concise. You have a word count. You've heard it in movies. “Give me 300 words. Give me 600 words.” If you have ever written, you know that 300 words is not much. 600 words is not much. you have to be concise. The easiest way to be concise is to get rid of anything that doesn't really matter to the main story, the main idea, what you're trying to convey. Now if you're up against a word count, and you're trying to figure out what to get rid of, the first place to go is your revisions. Because if you had to revise it to make it clear and it's really not that important to the main idea, it can go. If you were to apply this concept to the Pledge, you would end up with a pledge that sounds something like, “I pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all.” The rest of the clauses at some point had to be revised. “I pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all.” Man isn’t that a whole lot better? Doesn't it really get to the point? You're not pledging allegiance to a symbol, but to an idea. Something that matters. Not the symbol that is supposed to represent that idea, but the actual idea. That's where your allegiance lies. So much better. It truly embodies the promise that this country made. “Liberty and justice for all,” and it got it wrong in the beginning, right? We all know that. And as time went on, that umbrella of liberty and justice, well, it covered more and more people. Because that's what matters. Not the flag. Flag's a symbol representing that idea. The idea is what matters. That shortened pledge, “I pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all.” Not just does it better embody things, not just is it more concise, it’s universal. It doesn't stop at the borders. Because beyond America's borders do not live a lesser people. It applies to everybody. Gives us a goal. Gives us something to actually fight for. Something worth fighting for. I personally think that if we focused on the ideas rather than the symbols, the world would be a whole lot better off. Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good night.”
If you are making the pledge yourself then no one else needs to see it. Doing the pledge together, in public, is a way to reinforce the "group think". If someone doubts the consensus but sees everyone else still going along with the concensus the it causes one to doubt themselves rather than the concensus.
The idea that an oath of fealty removes your ability to revoke consent to be governed sure is a convenient notion for a government. I'd say you're released from the pledge anytime the institution betrays an ideological promise. Contracts are not unilateral. So pretty much no one can be reasonably said to be bound by it currently. Or at least, very few.
@@anonymous.caller If you mean me, yeah, I'm aro ace. But I more meant infractions of the social contact on the behalf of the government are currently daily and ongoing.

When I was in the fourth or fifth grade, I started asking questions about the meaning of the words pledge, and allegiance. Because outside of the pledge, these words are not often times used. At least no in grade school. Once I learned their meaning, I found that I was unable to repeat the pledge, despite standing and appearing to participate. I could not get past the idea that it was wrong to instruct children to make what amounted to a life long promise of loyalty to any nation when these children had no means by which to compare where they live with anywhere else on the earth. Your version of "I pledge allegiance, to liberty and justice for all." Now that's an idea I could have gotten behind and have been proud to have recited to this day. Beau, you sir a person for whom I hold genuine esteem and respect.
Beau, Bro I’ve really been checking you out on here and man I’ve like your channel from day one. We are from 2 totally different backgrounds, but this is what makes America. Keep up the good work. This is real shit..Stay focused Beau.. God Bless Us All..
It will be a lovely day when people realize that saying God Bless Us All in general without realizing that the ones they say it to might not necessarily believe in God, it really is pushing the boundaries of being intrusive and to some even rude. Would you like if someone had a strong belief you don't agree with and have them end conversations with a saying that only they can appreciate yet one that you strongly disagree with or even just don't subscribe to. Example of sayings such as Gays Will Save Us All, Allah Will Bless Us All, or how about The Devil Will Help Us All. Not saying you are against those things but I can guarantee it is something that you wouldn't like if people gave blanket statements to you under the assumption they are somehow helping you when in reality it is something you have strong beliefs against or even take offense to. When it comes down to it, you don't have to push your beliefs on people and try to think of the feeling you would feel if it was flipped the other way. We need to be inclusive as a society and by conversing in a way that includes and does not give a "this is my tribe not yours" feeling. We could move forward and progress so much faster.
@@SLEEPYJK I take your point and agree to an extent but perhaps you could agree that the sentiment expressed by Rank One can be taken in the spirit obviously intended.
Yes, I was well aware of the multiple revisions to the Pledge, with the latter one so influenced by Mccarthyism... Or in "Catch-22" where they were requiring people to sign loyalty oaths before they were allowed to eat.......of course, our Dear Leader is a big believer in such things- he allegedly fired James Comey because Comey would not pledge his loyalty to Trump personally.
*When patriotism requires outward performance like the recitation of a pledge, you know it is hollow. True patriots don't need that. They give up what they have to protect, save, and preserve their country without demanding anything in return.*

I've heard Canada is a nation whose main focus is mining. It's nice there are they take ok care of people who aren't Indigenous, but they're just as happy to roll pipelines and stuff through sacred land and force Indigenous women to sterilization. They don't have the same gun problem, but they're not angels, either. They have had anti-mask protests and white supremacists, anti-immigration. No country is perfect. I'd still rather be Canadian than American, though. Easy choice.
Canadian here and although we do have our own issues, you could probably chalk that up to us being only approx 35 million folks that it's not noticeable in the same capacities as in the USA. I came from the middle of the country, born and raised on a farm in what could be considered our Bible Belt. Well I find myself on our west coast for about 10 years of my adult life and I've seen saints and I've seen some people who could be in the running for worst person alive. However, I don't think I'd want to live anywhere else. It says Friendly Manitoba on our license plates for a reason and although I've taken myself out of the farm, the farm has never left me. I try to be the good in the world that I want to see and I've seen many good folks who appear to be doing the same.
This is the very subject I discussed with my uncle recently. We had been talking about the BLM movement and I was explaining it. Being the intelligent man he is, he got it and understood my statement about not being willing to stand for the anthem because we aren't the land of the free nor will I say the pledge until there is liberty and justice for all. But now, after hearing this, I'd be willing to say the revised version.
Long felt that the words "under god" need to be removed because of the intent of the Founding Father's to ensure separation of church and state. The Beau version of the pledge, however, is even better. UP VOTE BEAU ... you're right.

That was a wonderful and remarkable comment. Thank you.
Even more so when you grasp that it's children made to recite it daily or face punishment. Thankfully this has to my knowledge been changing in recent years. "Conservatives", all about objecting to the indoctrination Kool-Aid except when it's their preferred flavor.

Which is what James Madison (aka The Father of The Constition) once stated in a memo:
"Strongly guarded as is the separation between religion and & Gov't in the Constitution of the United States the danger of encroachment by Ecclesiastical Bodies, may be illustrated by precedents already furnished in their short history"
Madison also clarified that the separation of church and state outlined in the constitution was TOTAL:
"The civil Government, though bereft of everything like an associated hierarchy, possesses the requisite stability, and performs its functions with complete success, whilst the number, the industry, and the morality of the priesthood, and the devotion of the people, have been manifestly increased by the TOTAL SEPARATION OF THE CHURCH FROM THE STATE" -James Madison

It's that separation of church and state thing isn't it, I always found that odd.
Orwellian Horseman Yep!💯

But if they did that, how would they rile up the masses with hatred, racism and bigotry?
We wouldn't! And wouldn't that be wonderful?!?

I like to echo the late great George Carlin's sentiment, "I leave symbols to the symbol minded".
Didn't he also say something to the effect of if you have a good enough product, you don't need to advertise? Or was that Stanhope?
Thank you for all of your hard work. If more people thought like you, the world would be a better place.

I Pledge Allegiance: To Liberty, EQUALITY, and Justice For All
"The Pledge was supposed to be quick and to the point.
Seems redundant. Can you even have justice for all without equality.
Under God was added when the country was worried about Communists.
Which is totally illogical, considering the USA was founded as a secular nation to begin with laws based on non-religious principles. Not to mention the earliest Christian church practiced communism.
No, it was added because theocratic Christians saw a ripe opportunity to foist their god on the rest of the country.
I remember when the pledge was changed to add “Under God”. It still sounds odd to me.
This for a country which claims to separate church from state.

But that Umbrella is still allowing some to get soaking wet. Just a thought
But what if we focused on that idea instead of a flag?

Let's talk about the Pledge of Allegiance... TRANSCRIPT
“Well, howdy there, Internet people.
“I pledge allegiance to my flag and the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
Then an early revision, 1892-1923. “I pledge allegiance to my flag, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
1923-19, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. “
1924-1954, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
1954- Current version: “I pledge allegiance to the flag, of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
The fact that this was inspired by an editor is just happy coincidence in some ways. As a journalist, when you're writing, you have to be concise. You have a word count. You've heard it in movies. “Give me 300 words. Give me 600 words.”
If you have ever written, you know that 300 words is not much.
If you were to apply this concept to the Pledge, you would end up with a pledge that sounds something like, “I pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all.”
The rest of the clauses at some point had to be revised.
“I pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all.”
Man isn’t that a whole lot better?
Now that's a pledge for which I can stand.
The republic has fallen, and hold none of my allegiance.
Absolutely.
thats ok, there will be some of us with sound mind and understanding leftover to rebuild afterwards.
hopefully...
Do the ideals of liberty and justice for all hold any?
But would you not hold an oath to Beau's suggestion? To liberty and justice for All? I do not demand itbof you I merely ask...
But will you hold it's beer? ;)
Pledging allegiance to a flag is nationalism. Pledging allegiance to liberty and justice is Patriotism...let's be the ideal
I like it! It's the civil version of the Golden Rule, which is also universal.
I love your version, SO MUCH MORE.
Her version. :)
I've always wondered exactly how many times one must pledge "allegiance" until it finally took.

Welcome to the club of internet people who want to think about the issues. We are looking forward to any civil discourse you bring. 💙

They put that as anti-“godless”communist propaganda. Funny cause the author of the Pledge was a Christian Socialist. And he was for separation of Church and State
I pledge allegiance to Liberty and Justice for All! Thank you once again Beau.
Beau, you knocked it out of the park on this one. Perfection
Beautifully concise. Thanks, Beau!
Yes! “I pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all.” I had hell growing up because I knew as a small child that it was wrong to pledge to a symbol - the flag, or the country. I was a contentious child who refused to do the pledge for many of my elementary school years. Never have been much of a conformist. Probably how I stumbled into this room. 😊
The heavens applaud this message. I appreciate all that you do and all that you are. Blessed Be, Beau!
"I pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all." I was just about to post that when you said it. :) Thanks for making me feel like a like-minded voice of reason.
We need a T-shirt for that, Beau!

Just started watching your videos yesterday and absolutely love your content
Keep watching and go back, too, for earlier content. The man is here and his words are worthwhile. Don't miss it.
Well welcome aboard.
Lucky You! This means that there are hundreds more of Beau's videos that you haven't seen even once. I have enjoyed every one of them and keep going back for refreshers. I always laugh at the cake murderer spoof.
Welcome!! Positive vibes from New Hampshire and remember to be kind to each other and yourself during this pandemic and social crisis.

Beau, I love you man! I pledge allegiance to liberty and justice for all. It's the only way I will say the pledge from this day forward. How could it possibly offend anyone? Oh wait, I forgot...
