If you're going to put the Bible in school than you also need to allow the other religious books in. A comparative study of religion. But that is not what is intended. What these people want is to be able to use schools to indoctrinate people.

This is so they can teach creationism in science class. I was talking to a guy that refused to believe that he came from an ape.... I tried to explain to him that he didn’t COME FROM an ape, but that humans and the apes had a common ancestor and that all the dna we have in common prove that. He looked at me and said... well, humans have common dna with all mammals. I said..... now you are starting to get it! But he really wasn’t!!!!! Why is the tree of life, such a hard concept to understand?

(which really annoyed preachers) I read and studied the bible for many years. I wanted to believe, I wanted there to be some santa clause in the sky who actually cared about me. How ever after reading the bible and taking notes and comparing them. I cam to the conclusion that "god" is a lie that people in power tell the uneducated that they will go to hell unless they do as they are told. I am beffled that people who are normally intelligent can fall for such a hoax. After I completed my study I became a born again atheist!

The Seven Tenets of the Satanic Temple :
*One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.
*The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.
*One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.
*The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.
*Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs.
*People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.
*Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.

For all of the Christian varieties we have, the teachings of Christ was rarely taught or practiced. In Germany, for historical reasons mostly, religious education is something schools must offer, and students can opt out for philosophy class or ethics or something similar if they're not catholic or protestant or just don't care for it.
The thing is, I took RE for my entire education, and it was basically part ethics, part history, part comparative religions, and part critical source analysis, as in learning why the bible is written the way it is written, how it came to be, who it was written for and so on. I also was lucky enough to have teachers who valued the academic approach and healthy class discussion over preaching official doctrine.
I also think that having a solid background knowledge of how religion shaped and continues to shape society, and why the bible (and other religious texts) is the way it is, is something that should actually be mandatory teaching, if only to, as you say, teach people how to think and why other people think the way they do.

That is absolutely fascinating. I would have been very happy to have a similar option. I would love to take it today, tbh. I took some interesting courses in college like 'race and ethnicity', 'speech and public speaking', and an ethics course only because they were required or fulfilled a requirement. They were among my favourite classes of my entire education. Information is always useful and helps create well-rounded people with open minds. My mom went to Germany years ago (well before covid) with her cousins. The thing that they found most fascinating and impressive was how Germany was so reflective and respectful regarding the horrors of WWII. I think that they had wondered what it would be like and found it very enlightening. I think of that often and wish that the US would be similarly open and reflective and follow a similar model for dealing with the evils of slavery. It is a historical fact which cannot be changed but we should be able to deal with it honestly like adults. Yet every minute we walk further away from it and delude ourselves as a country which makes me sad.

Countries that deny the existence of God tend to disappear (e.g. the collapse of the Soviet Union). China is different because they still have Buddhism.
Science may be physical, but the mind of the truth-discerning scientist is at once supermaterial. Matter knows not truth, neither can it love mercy nor delight in spiritual realities. Moral convictions based on spiritual enlightenment and rooted in human experience are just as real and certain as mathematical deductions based on physical observations, but on another and higher level. Because they believe that their version of Christianity is unquestionably the “correct” version, that their Bible the “correct” Bible, they are certain that no harm could possibly come from having their “correct” Bible taught in school. To them it is obvious that the *best way possible* to fight those who would impose Sharia law is to first install Christian Biblical law. I find that I get nowhere in discussions with conservative Christians who are doxasticly closed, that a necessary first step is to get them to open up to the possibility that there are other systems of beliefs that are just as valid as theirs, and that first step is by far the hardest.

I told them that I feel that their teachers wouldn't be qualified to teach on the subjects, other children may feel left out, and it is up to parents to teach the children some things, and up to the school teachers to teach other subjects.
A philosophy course for seniors who don't intend to go on to college, as an introduction to the religions of the world and as an aid to functioning well in the workplace and society, could be a good thing to do for them, though.

It's one thing to look to your faith based convictions to help guide your position on secular, government policies. But religion didn't invent morality. It happened the other way around. Morality, regardless of whether or not you agree with the particular interpretation of it, existed first. Only then, was religion woven into it. If the Bible were to be taught it school, it still wouldn’t belong in a science class. Science is a system of discovery by empirical testing and observational evidence. The Bible doesn’t claim to do this, in fact it asks for the opposite (faith without proof, which is the antithesis of scientific reasoning). Science classes only teach scientific conclusions, not faith based or philosophical conclusions. So if the Bible was studied in school, it would belong in a literature or theism class, maybe even a history or philosophy class, where it could be studied alongside other scriptures on its actual merits.

We can teach the golden rule and morality without all of the baggage that comes with religious doctrines and indoctrination. If religion is to be taught, which I think it should be, it should be taught in it's entirety including the evil, misogyny, fear and totalitarianism it contains so that people can learn what religion really is; a man made tool to control the masses that preys on the fears we all have to face about our own end and our big, scary universe that it takes so much real work to understand. Trump is pandering to the evangelicals who would see our public schools converted to intellectual cest pools that indoctrinate children to the detriment to our science education...which would never survive religious imposition. Not to forget that other scientific findings are also included in the discussion. Those lessons are taught around 2 -3 hours a week for a minimum of about 3 to 4 years starting around 5th grade , sometimes later but always for more than 2 years Our teachers for these subjects must also have studied the subjects (each teacher has 2 subjects with a master's degree, 1 major and a minor) . I thought it would be great if it included all religions, because it would also be a great way to show the similarities and differences between cultures which if taught properly would remove a lot of cultural stigmas. But this was my reaction too, Christians think they're the only ones who are "right". They'd scream if anyone made this appeal for a religious text that wasn't the Bible. Personally I'm a believer in God, but I ditched organized religion due to the hate and push on indoctrination of others. There's a part of the Bible (I can't remember where, but I'm pretty sure it's the Bible, admittedly it has been awhile) that says that God has many names. I have thought for a long time about that, and why can't those names be the names mentioned in similar religious texts? So many religions do overlap on the important points of morality, why isn't it possible that most of them are one religion that is different only due to culture? I'm not a scholar, I'm definitely not a philosopher, and I really don't know enough about all the religions to do more than sometimes speculate about it. But I wonder how Christians would feel if they felt like they were constantly being told they were sinners and that if they didn't convert to whatever they'd burn for eternity? I'm not sure how forced conversion to a FAITH is even a thing. Just because you force someone under penalty of death to worship with their words, wtf does that do to their hearts? Nothing. Except make them resent their captors and the religion they brought with them. True faith is not the measure of words so why do they think that's something that their God would want? People who say words they don't mean under duress? I just don't understand it. I was raised in it, I don't at all understand it. Respect for other beliefs or lack of belief isn't hard once you get off your high horse lol. As always great content...(and wasn't he trying to get rid of the Civics course? 😂)

How can you teach about world history without bringing the religion into it. The history of religion is a major part of how the world has formed (not trying to claim that this is necessarily a good thing) so keeping religion out of schools entirely is detrimental to education. Some of the philosophies (as in the examples used in this video) that many of the worlds religions have at their core, are all about being decent to each other, so understanding how different cultures have tried to use these philosophies to make their lives better, can be a good thing. Equally, understanding how many people have exploited the outdated notions in other cultures beliefs (whilst ignoring the outdated beliefs in their own) as a way of poisoning your people against theirs, is an important lesson to learn, if we are to ever prevent the same mistakes from happening again.
As Beau said, teaching religion from a historical or philosophical viewpoint can be an invaluable way of making the future a better place. Teaching them from a strict indoctrinate viewpoint, can only do more harm than good.
My personal opinion is that having a hard-lined, all religious education should be banned full-stop, mentality is not much different to religious indoctrination in its own right, its just that the religion in question is atheism. And yes, I understand the irony of that previous statement, but it does seem that there are a few people in this world these days who seem to be religiously atheistic, and this is not necessarily a good direction to be heading in.
      Just a thought.

I'm of the opinion that people should learn the whole history, evolution, and philosophy of ALL of the religions of the world, not just the whitewashed, palatable, pretty parts. Not only should students be taught the philosophies each religion offers, but also be taught how to think critically about them, and to compare the "morals" they taught, against what is considered moral today. Many Christians might be shocked to learn that the only position on abortion in the bible, is that not only is it acceptable, but that it was to be administered by a priest! Imagine that, a jealous man suspicious of his wife's fidelity, taking her to the priest who then gives her an abortive concoction to drink that will cause a miscarriage if she was unfaithful...
Anyway, a great many atheists are born as a direct consequence of ACTUALLY reading their holy book from cover to cover, and not just the verses here and there that their preacher tells them to. Looking into the history of how their holy books were put together can also be very enlightening. Lots of folks go into seminary to become priests, and exit from it as nonbelievers. I dated just such a person some years ago :)

I went to a Christian kindergarten, because there was no public kindergarten in our neighborhood.
Every morning, we started with a morning prayer, which was something new to me since I was not raised religious.
One day when my mother asked about my day, i told her. I was a little kid, thought nothing of it, i trusted adults to know whats best.
A few days later, just before morning prayer, we were asked which ones of us did not pray at home.
7 or 8 of us raised our hands, and we were taken to another classroom, where we spent the next 10 - 15 minutes talking about dinner last night, games we played, things we did. After that we went back to the classroom where the other kids had just finished praying.
This went on for the rest of the year. None of us was made to feel weird, we were included in everything else.
I did not even realize what must have happened between some parents and the school.
This happened about 46 years ago.
Right now, i wonder what would happen in an American Christian school if secular parents asked not to teach their kids that stuff, in the case that no public school is available.

Parents should have a say in EVERYTHING the school wants to teach their kids. Period. That's real "school choice".

you are one of the very few that understand exactly how I feel about this subject. I have a friend who is an atheist where I am a christian and we both think the same way. if religion is to be taught in schools than it should include all forms of religion, theology, etc. Thank you for bringing this out to the public through your youtube site.

I am agnostic, deist to be exact. I grew up Episcopalian. I know the Bible very well.. and I have taken to flat out calling many Christians Apostates. They have no idea what thier own religion teaches. They preach hate. When Jesus was about love and acceptance. They judge others, when it clearly, unequivocally states, thou shalt not judge, for judgement is the Lord's. If anything drove that final wedge between me and my faith, it was years of hearing the hate and anger and rightious judgement coming out of Christians. I had an ethics professor once that explained that if you follow another group's ethics, that makes you an unethical man. Because when that group changes it's ethics, you have to change. And that's exactly what I see happening today in Christianity...

In college, I took a History of the Christian Church class. In it, the textbook covered "Abrahamic" religion and it's influence on the world (Old Testament stuff), the branches and offshoots of that beginning and how the world affected the teaching and the teaching effected the world. It went on to cover New Testament Christianity and how it was introduced and what effects it had on both the world and the Old Testament religions.. Following up through the spread through the Mediterranean Sea and Roman empire, the European countries, into early Russia, etc. It continued through the spread to America and the influence on the founding fathers. It also covered the way it was USED to prop up governments and how governments were USED to prop it up. Man's influence twisted religion toward their goals. Government's corruption twisted the church to control. The founding fathers all had seen this, some of them first hand, and when they formed the country, the separation was discussed as a way of stopping it from happening again. It was one of the most interesting history classes I have taken because it related to me and my faith, but from a historical point of view. The professor of the class - one of the pastors from a local church. He helped me understand why Church and State are to be separated; so neither corrupts the other.

  • @deborahwhittington8032

Thanks Beau for another excellent commentary. I agree with your idea of teaching philosophy and comparative religions in schools. Some schools do this already. I taught in a Houston area school district that did this because Houston is very diverse. Understanding our fellow Houstonians' cultures and religions helps us to live, work, and go to school with each other peacefully as friends. Knowledge leads to understanding and acceptance. Ignorance only leads to fear and hatred of the "unknown other." I have friends and colleagues of many religions and cultures. I feel blessed to know each one of these people.

the same similar fundamental guideline of treating ppl how you’d want to be treated is also present in Wicca or Witchcraft as well..
one of the basic rules of Wicca is to be careful of the thoughts and actions you project outward toward anyone else bcuz it could come back to you three fold.. so if you’re projecting negative energy, thoughts or action toward a specific person or persons and wishing them bad fortune or harm the end result may backfire on you three times over.. best to do good deeds and practice love.. 💟☮️
